loren. she's sharing the good vibrations all morning long. >> next week we're talking about showers, overcast conditions, the fog rolls back in. the stellar sunshine we've been spoiled with over the past couple days soon to be a thing of the past. 34 degrees now in livermore. 29 in gilroy. headed to the 70s again today and tomorrow. and then the changes arrive. we'll take you through the changes. first want to check your drive. >> we'll check on a big rig that wasn't driving, that was an issue. we had that rig blocking the lanes. it has cleared. as you get off of the freeway you're okay, concentrate on the traffic. i'll give you a look at the commute coming up. >> it is 6:01. brutal attack last night leaves two women in san francisco fighting for their lives. and police say the attacker is

still out there. it happened on 20th avenue in the sunset district last night. that is where bob redell joins us live. what is the latest? >> reporter: good morning to you. unfortunately both women still in the hospital with life threatening injuries. police don't know why somebody would attack a 70-year-old woman in her home in san francisco. was it robbery or something else? whatever it was, the result was devastating. the attack took place last night in that home right here on 20th near nroiega. someone assaulted the elderly woman, then another woman happened to show up to deliver chinese food unaware of what was going on. the attacker turned on her as well. we understand he used a hammer with both of the women, possibly a knife as well. the lady delivering the food was able to make it back to her restaurant which is around the corner where her fellow employees called 911. as i mentioned both women in the

hospital at sf general, both fighting for their lives. the attacker did get away. no arrests so far. jon, laura. >> thank you for the update, bob. this is a strange story, a woman is in jail this morning accused of biting two young children in the face. it happened yesterday afternoon at the book buyer's store on castro in mountain view. 46-year-old polly walked up to a toddler and bit her on the cheek and bit an infant. >> pg&e crews at the scene of an explosion and fire in mountain view. witnesses tells us flames were so high you could see them from 101. damian trujillo is live at the scene. he has all of the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. pg&e baffled what may have caused this explosion. they lit up the tower for us. that's where the problem is. these are high tension power

lines. you can see if rob pans to the right they are dangling on some of the trees here overseeing the stevens creek trail. the explosion on one of these transmission lines happened last night. commuters on 101 reported seeing the explosion early last night. then a huge glow. the high voltage lines came crashing down on the trail. that caused a one-acre fire which crews put out. the incident forced a black-out. this is next to microsoft in mountain view and it's north of moffitt air field. their fire department came out to lend a hand. one resident from a mobile home park was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. the crews have been here all night waiting for 7y machinery to come out here and help them remove some of these cables and try to figure out what happened.

damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> 6:04. oakland police released sketches of two men who shot and killed an oakland man in front of his wife and sun outside an east oakland market. the suspected shooter is a black male between the age of 17 and 20. 5'10", dark complexion and dread locks. his accomplice is a black man, 5'10" with short hair f. you recognize the suspects in these sketches call oakland police. >> too messtic abuse charges could be filed against sheriff ross mirkarimi. the district attorney says he is looking at the case and will decide today or early next week whether to file charges here. domestic violence victims' advocates say that mirkarimi should resign. he's accused of grabs his wife's arm so hard that it caused a bruise. his wife says the issue is a family matter. >> 6:05.

1500 layoff notices will go out to oakland city employees next week, fewer than 200 expected to lose their jobs. the city wants everyone to be prepared. the lay-offs are the result of losing $30 million in redevelopment money. >> it's a paradigm shift for the state. we've been ordered to dissolve redevelopment, and many other local governments and other cities are dealing with the same issue in their own way. >> notices will go to employees in every city department except for those in the police and fire department. oakland is dealing with its budget issues through furlough days. city offices will be closed to save the city money. monday is already a holiday. police and emergency services will not be affected. >> the deadline today for buying cleaner burning rigs. trucks with engines made in 2004

and earlier will be banned from driving into the port. owners qualify for a $10,000 grant from the bay area quality management district. nearly 250 drivers qualify but only a fraction have applied. >> it is 6:06. new this morning president obama will ask congress for more power to shrink the federal government. the president wants to merge six trade and commerce agencies with overlapping programs. the last president to have that type of power was ronald reagan. >> the pentagon shifting quietly some combat troops and war ships to the persian gulf after a top commander warned he needed more forces to deal with iran and other potential threats. officials say the deployments do not mean to build up a war type activity here. but they are contingency plans in case there is a crisis erupting with iran over its

nuclear program. two soldiers injured will receive the purple heart. jeff cueto was injured when his patrol was hit back in november. another suffered a brain injury during a rocket attack. both being treated at the v.a. rehab center. >> i want to check in with christina loren. she has a look at our forecast >> we have been spoiled. we had a stretch of fair weather, unseasonably warm and things are changing as we head into next week so. we're going to get two more days of this gorgeous weather. and then we're talking about showers, measuring visibility. things change. it's offshore flow. clear sky this is morning making four cool stafrmt we're going from near record lows to near record highs.

59 degrees at noon in hayward. that's your seasonal average for this time of year. we're hitting our seasonal averages, even bypassing them by noon each day over the past two weeks almost so. finally we're getting significant changes. your temperatures are going to drop off as we head into next week. hook at these highs today. you can hit the beach, 70 in santa rosa. even san jose. and some cities like gilroy could be touching on 73. looking likely later on today. the reason for the change. high pressure is going to break down. not only have we had no rain because of this ridge but little cloud cover. all of the clouds getting driven back out in the pacific. as we head through next week the ridge moves east, the showers are ushered in and we're looking really good for significant rainfall and sierra snow. we'll talk about when coming up first at 6:09. >> let's update highway 4.

we had a couple of reports. the accident at 4 westbound right around willow pass road, sound likes all activity is off to the shoulder. the earlier wrong way drivers reported there also, maybe that earlier accident. because the accident involved two cars facing the wrong way at the end. there has been no follow-up report so it looks like it should clear shortly. nice drive there. the north bay, smooth travel times. for 101, continuing down to san rafael. across the water, highway 92, san mateo bridge is not a problem but we have a new accident. i'll get more details. once they come in i'll follow in the next report. >> 6:10. coming up a popular oakland event is on the move because of occupy oakland. we'll tell you where it's being

nearly ten years. that's a long time. marla tellez joins us live from the stick with the final touches throughout that are put in place by all of the workers. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. candle stick can hold about 70,000 fans so you can bet the stick is going to be packed tomorrow. and the warning signs are out here flashing this morning with these words. enhanced security screening and fan code conduct enforced. despite the winning season, the spotlight was often on rowdy fans. fights caught on tape, fans beaten during and after the game. since then there has been heightened security and tailgating rules got tighter. but this morning this is not what fans are thinking about with. >> i hope everybody enjoys the game. that's all about that. it's only a game but you know. go niners. >> i think it's going to be a good game. i think the niners are going to come out winning. >> reporter: i have reached out

to the 49ers organization for comment regarding security. on twitter all that the team is tweeting about is a lot of beat the saints talk. kickoff is tomorrow at 1:35. tail gators can arrive as early as 8:30 tomorrow morning. marla tellez. >> thanks a lot. one side note. producer andrew wanted us to let everybody know that huey lewis singing the national anthem. >> what about the forecast? >> well, hey, let's get to that. we've got a big game in town. a lot of people traveling into the bay area. they are going to get just as spoiled as we have been over the past couple weeks. temperatures at 59 degrees at 1:30. we're going to keep climbing as you make your way home from the game about 3:30, maybe 4:00, hopefully after a big 9ers win,

temperature at about 62 so comfortable. unseasonably mild for this time of year. then things start to change. storm track taken into alaska. they have been getting hammered. finally, we have an area of low pressure that is strong enough to break down that ridge. you can see it here moving into the upper left corner of the screen. that guy is going to make all of the difference as we head through next week. it works like this for today. temperatures are going to climb from the 20s and 30s up into the 70s in some cities. by this weekend clouds increase and sunday looking much cooler, so if you want to make outdoor plans saturday a better day. by next week the pattern change arrives. fog starting monday. then the showers move in. enjoy this while we can. 70 in san jose, 68 in fremont and 70 in concord. about 63 degrees even in the city by the bay. some of the warmest spots will get above 65 degrees.

leaving work a little late. or leave earliment i'm trying to give you something to work with on a friday. 16 minute drive out of the altamont pass. 580, just through that zone now speeds in the 50s. the rest of the folks close to the speed limit. heading to the maze, these travel times showing the approach to the bay bridge toll plaza. no major problems. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 6:18 now. california's high speed rail plan has seen plenty of criticism. now the man charged with leading the project is jumping ship. ceo of the high speed rail authority cited personal reasons for his resignation. the announcement comes at a time when the project is under fire for its $100 billion price tag. >> paying cash could cost you more on cal trains sometime soon. the agency talking about increasing one-way cash fares by 25 cents per zone. if somebody takes cal train from

san francisco zone 1 to san jose zone 6 that would cost $1.25 extra. clipper card users won't see an increase. the agency will hold public hearings before making the final decision. >> for the class of 2012 getting into uv going to be a lot harder. applications from in-state high school students are up almost 10%. applications from non-californians are up 56%. the uc will enroll more students but noncalifornians will have an advantage because they pay about $23,000 more a year in tuition and fees. >> 6:19. occupy oakland blame forward uprooting a popular east bay event. the oakland running festival says it's relocating because of all of the problems with the campers at the plaza. until this year the event has started and ended at the plaza. race organizers have moved the

start of the race at snow park. it will end at lake merritt this year. last year they pumped $3 million into the economy. registration now open for the 101st running of the bay to breakers race. it will be held on may 15. organizers say only about 50,000 people will be allowed to participate, so you are warned and suggested to sign up early or miss out. the bay to breakers will be a dry race meaning there is a zero tolerance when it comes to alcohol and floats. >> colorful to watch. coming up, california's economy is slipping in world ranking. find out which country passed our state. >> the chinese make the iphone. why can't they buy it? beth!

>> welcome back everyone. 6:23 now. california no longer has the world's eighth largest economy. the center for the continuing study of the california economy out of palo alto says brazil just pushed the state to number nine. the think tank estimates california's economy to be $1.9 trillion and brazil is $2.1 trillion. the center used estimates of gross domestic product from the u.s. department of commerce and

compared with it the world bank's estimates of world economies. >> looking to pick up a new phone charger get ready. an upgrade curt a new standards are passed targeting household vampires. starting next year cell phones, power tools and other portable electronic devices will have to have battery chargers that don't suck electricity from outlets when they are not used. they are plugged in but you want to cut that power line off. the rules could save consumers $300 million on electric bills. >> chinese police are letting everyone see a wild rampage. this just released video show as driver doing everything he or she can to get away from police. police tried to stop the car, the driver tried to get away but the car got stuck in traffic so backed up and hit a motorcyclist. later on the road the driver

slams into other cars. it happened in late december. police arrested the driver later in the day. >> more wild video in beijing, chinese who lined up to get that latest iphone, they rioted when they were told apple decided to stop sales. scott has the video. >> good morning. apple made that decision after it ran out of iphones in other stores in china and customers lashed out. here is the video from beijing. eggs thrown at the store. police called in. the beijing store had plenty of phones to sell but the decision was made not to sell any because of how unruly crowds were at other stores when the phones sold out. unfortunately, all that decision did was speed up the crowd's decision to riot. we have more video on nbcbayarea.com. there are two bills in congress causing huge controversy, protect it in the senate, sop in

the senate. the senate who introduced protect ip said his proposed law needs the more study. these bills would allow the federal government to deny you access to websites accused of piracy even if it had not been proven. more websites say they will go dark to protest. the latest is this silly website, a site that features cat pictures. one of the most popular and makes millions. the cat site will go blank for one day. and this young man opened his first ski shop in a strip mall at age 14 and by 18 he owned a line of women's footwear, by his 20s he founded a business, he sold to ebay for $2.4 billion. michael ruben my guest on press here to talk about entrepreneurship and how to get your own very, very good business. >> no kidding. learned at an early age. >> a guy you want to listen to.

side. the taillights on the right. it's an easy flow past high street at the limit but up north, the embarcadero exit, reports of a large piece of metal in the fast lane. there should be a crew heading out there. no one has hit it. but slow the speeds for the time being. >> sounds good. >> 6:31. crews at the scene of an explosion and fire in mountain view. witnesses there tell us the flames were so high at one point they could be seen from 101. damian trujillo is live at the scene with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. pg&e has no idea what caused that explosion. that happened on the tower on the right. not sure if you can see it. pg&e turned off the big light they had for us. the cause of that explosion one of the lines that came crashing down on the ground here. this is now home video shot, the

drivers off 101 report seeing a bright glow from the area. at this point pg&e is trying to determine what caused the problem. the apparent explosion the cause of minor vegetation fire around the stevens creek trail. that was put out. 372 customers remained without power for some time. the downed lines created quite a headache for the utility. part of stevens creek trail is closed because of the downed power lines. the crews can't say when things will be back to normal. they are waiting for heavy equipment. i see four or five pg&e trucks here just parked, waiting for something here. trying to determine what caused this explosion. live in mountain view. damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:32. a brute of attack in san francisco has two women in the hospital with life threatening injuries. it happened on 20th avenue. bob joins us live from san

francisco with the latest. it was a very brutal attack. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. whoever did this was merciless, using a hammer, possibly a knife as well, to attack both of these women who are both as you mentioned in the hospital fighting for their lives. this took place around 9:20. there was a 70-year-old woman who was assaulted, sometime during the attack another woman showed up to deliver chinese food. apparently unaware of what was going on inside. the attacker started assaulting her. she was badly hurt but able to run to a restaurant which is where her colleagues called 911. both people are also with life threatening injuries. police are looking for the attacker. no indication on what the motive was behind this attack. >> okay, bob. thank you very much.

a 40-year-old livermore teacher accused of having sex with a student is set to make her first court appearance. police say marie johnson had a relationship with a 14-year-old boy. as a result she's facing 24 counts of sexual assault. investigators say it started with text messages and facebook communication along with a game words with friends. johnson remains on administrative leave. >> a teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student at ob whily school. craig worked at the school for nine years teaching a second and third grade cam bo class. chandler is on leave. san jose police trying to track down other potential victims. >> also the man accused in the string of sexual assaults returns to court. a judge is expected to point a lawyer for frederick dozier. he faces charges of sexual

assault, robbery and attempted murder. he is accused of attacking three people from june to december of last year. >> the california public utilities commission is one step closer to fining pg&e for that deadly san bruno pipe explosion. the commission approving a scathing report saying pg&e broke several state and federal safety laws leading up to the disaster that ultimately killed eight people. the report blames the corporate culture saying the company valued profits over public safety. it accuses -- the half a billion for repairs never made. approval of the report begins a process that could result in massive new penalties for the utility. pg&e's president chris johns responded saying we are taking the finding seriously, >> 6:35 now.

lots of folks are excited it's friday with an extended weekend. we want to check the forecast. >> good morning. we'll still be here monday i want to let you know if you have to get to work. 29 degrees in fairfield. 32 in concord. 33 degrees in livermore. just about every where again in near record low territory. we will be inner record territory because of the clear conditions. 65 degrees in santa lrosa. we'll see temperatures in the 70s across the board, 70 in santa cruz, 70 in santa rosa. a couple of 70s in the east bay and here in san jose. this is going to be the warmest day of the week so. take advantage of it. we drop off a touch for tomorrow, then things start to change if we head through sunday. let's work it out for you. a little haze, staying dry. by the weekend clouds increase, sunday not as good for outdoor

6:40 now. the gop presidential candidates are dialing down their romney rhetoric. the attacks on mitt romney's record don't appear to help win over voters and the party leadership sent a clear message to stop it. "today in the bay's" brian mooar is live with a look at what the candidates are doing now. good morning. >> good morning. well, it has been a really good and really bad week for mitt romney. he ran through this gauntlet of the other candidates specifically newt gingrich and rick perry, attacking his business record. his campaign has put out a response ad calling those attacks desperate. they weren't effective in raising the other candidates up. and in fact, they alienated the candidates from a lot of the republican leadership who asked them to tone these attacks down. and while gingrich and perry are not apologizing, they are doing exactly what they have been asked to do. the problem now is all of these

>> welcome back everyone. 6:44 now. it is a feel good day. it's fr i. also because christina loren is here to tell us about spectacular weather. >> you get off work you can get out there and enjoy the beautiful january winter we've had so far. things change, starting to feel like winter around the bay area. next week, major pattern change ahead. we need the rain so we are embracing that change. you can see now, san jose waking up with a nice clear stafrmt it's not a spare the air day. everybody back in the moderate air quality range so though it's cold with temperatures in the 20s and 30s, yeah, you can burn that fire wood legally. let's talk about what's happening out there. clear skies make for a very cold start. also because we're not getting the clouds to limit the sunshine coming into the bay area. our temperatures are going to soar starting at noon. but from noon to 3:00, that's when we get the warmest time of the day. after all of the cold air mixes out.

an earlier incident looks like it's cleared by the dublin interchange. 880, castro valley, we see slowing now northbound 238. relatively normal pattern and a little slowing off over to the san mateo bridge. and the bay bridge. the metering lights are on. back to you. >> mike, thank you. there was an absolutely brutal attack on two women and this morning san francisco police searching for a suspect and searching for a motive. it all happened on 20th avenue last night. and that where bob redell joins us live with the latest. what can you tell us? >> reporter: jon, police don't know why someone would attack a 70-year-old woman in her home. was it robbery, was it something else? whatever the motive, the result was devastating. two women including that one are both in the hospital fighting for their lives. the act took place around 9:20 in that home here on 20th around

9:20 as i mentioned. someone brutally assaulted her, then another woman showed up to deliver chinese food. apparently unaware what if was going on inside. the attacker turned on her as well. we understand that he used a hammer on both women, possibly a knife as well. the lady delivering the food was able to make it back to her restaurant which is just around the corner where her fellow employees called 911. both women are at sf general, both with life threatening conditions. it's possible that the elderly woman is the one who is fighting for her life the most. the attacker did get away. no arrests so far. jon, laura. >> thank you, bob. 6:49. pg&e is investigating whether a blown transformer caused a huge fire near the microsoft campus. we have video by a witness at the scene. he tells us at one point the flames were 20 to 30 feet high. fire crews say power lines fell into the brush around 9:30 last

night sparking that fire. pg&e knocked out the fire -- rather cities fire knocked out power to 370 customers. no build withings were damaged. >> a woman who claims she survived a sexual assault by joseph nasoall set to testify. nasoaccused of killing four women between 1977 and 1994. yesterday prosecutors introducing evidence of what they say were additional victims. it includes photos of two unidentified women who appear dead that were found in naso's safe deposit box. also the personal effects of a woman who disappeared back in 1992 on her way to a bob dylan concert in san francisco. >> two men are in custody after a bank robbery and bomb scare in san jose. we've got what looks like when the bomb squad detonated what they thought could be an exlow s explosive device. it started with a bank robbery.

police say one of the suspects walked into the bank, threatened the teller with some type of device. he took cash and jumped into a blue honda. they reportedly sped to 87 and crashed into a minivan. the the men then tried to get away. one of them was tackled by an off-duty security guard. the other hid at gunderson high school. the school was on lockdown until police eventually found and arrested him. >> for many years the bay area's biggest city was one of the safest in the country. now san jose city leaders want ta regain that status. chris moore says he is rearranging priorities focusing more on big busts and fluid situations. >> today was a great example where we had a bank robbery, we were able to take the suspects into custody, took a lot of resources which if you have too many of those in one day it makes it very difficult because
