live report from oakland coming up with how the investigation is going this morning. >> we'll check back in with bob. a tragic weekend in fresno where four people died in apparent murder/suicide. police found a mother, two children and a man shot to death in an apartment early yesterday. the woman's husband was also there, he had been stabbed multiple times. police believe the woman attacked her husband, then shot her children and another man before turning the gun on herself. the husband remains hospitalized in critical condition. >> a routine traffic stop turns deadly in santa clara. police stopped a man saturday night on karen drive. the officer says the driver was uncooperative and reached for a gun, causing the officer to shoot and kill him. an investigation is under way. the officer is on paid administrative leave. >> what would make a bar full of 49er fans cheer for the new york

giants? how about home field advantage. next weekend the 49ers take on the giants at candlestick park. new york beat the packers leaving san francisco fans very happy. >> the giants travel all the way across the country to come and play at candlestick park, it's going to be a big beat down going on next week this time. >> we don't even have to discuss it. the niners win, game over, we're going to the super bowl. >> that's what i'm talking about. season ticket holders have their tickets to sunday's game and they can buy extras starting wednesday. a couple hours before they are available to the general public. >> a lot of people so excited. we caught up with mayor ed lee this weekend and much like everyone else, the mayor was riding high after the 49ers' victory. >> go niners. greatest game i've seen in you know, part of my life except for montana. exciting for the city. we're all very excited. we're watching the game very well. >> everybody excited about the

game. one of the greatest. what do the giants think about the trip out west? we're hoping to hear from some of the players there but the championships are this sunday, 3:30 at candle stick. >> time to go back out to bob redell. we were telling you oakland police on a manhunt trying to find the suspect of -- accused of sexually assaulting a list of women. >> what makes this unusual the suspect is a 14-year-old boy. bob joins us live with an upday. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. police don't normally name juvenile suspects but they believe his ris took society outweighs his privacy and they believe that they have a better chance of catching him if they identify him. his name is brian glassber, a 14-year-old boy accused of sexually assaulting two women twice his age. the most recent attack took

place this past thursday, this is on 11th street between 980 and mlk in oakland. the other attack on market street. in both incidents police say glassber approached the 28-year-old women on the street, one who had been walking, the other on her bike, officers say he pretended to have a gun, took their wallet or purse, then forced them into an isolated area where he allegedly sexually assaulted them. police are not releasing his photo but have put out a description of the 14-year-old suspect. he is african-american, 5'5", 110 pounds, black hair, brown eyes, they consider him to be armed and dangerous. reporting live, bob redell, nbc bay area news. >> bob, thank you. the trial of an accused serial killer sparked an investigation into whether or not he is connected to another unsolved murder. the santa rosa press democrat reports police are investigating joseph naso's possible connection to a cold case from

the 1980s. investigators found a note mentioning the town while searching naso's home. police have not released further details in the cold case but say they are comparing dna evidence from the killing with that of naso. >> san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi insisting he has no plans to step down in the wake of domestic violence charges against him. he was charged friday with three misdemeanors connected to an alleged domestic violence incident on new year's eve. he says he will fight the charges but calls are growing louder for him to step aside. anti-domestic violence advocates demanding he resign. mayor ed lee says she reviewing the facts of the case to determine whether he will remove mirkarimi from office. >> warning for craigslist users after a string of armed robberies. police are reminding buyers and sellers to use caution when they use craigslist. the robbers post bogus ads to

lure victims. they respond to sellers, but the victims arrive to complete the sale, they are robbed. users should use caution when selling items to strangers or visiting unfamiliar places. >> another blow for parents in california struggling to find work. the governor says you have two years to get a job before you lose half your welfare check. the welfare cuts could save the state and help bridge the budget gap. the governor says california's being penalized by the feds for having too many parents who work fewer than 30 hours a week. critics say even well qualified workers cannot find jobs in this economy. the governor admits it's not nice but he says it is necessary to try to balance the budget. >> 4:37 now. another chilly start to our day. let's check back in with christina loren. >> good morning to you. it's a holiday so many people don't actually have to go to work. throw on an extra blanket, it's cold. thanks for waking up with us. 31 in napa, at 33 in concord.

these temperatures are not too far out of what we've had last week except for fairfield. look at this, you're at 22 degrees. so, yeah, 32 as you know is freezing, 22 degrees, it's cold out there. make sure you bring in your sensitive pets and plants. your pets probably won't want to be out for longer than 10 to 15 minutes. that is quite a bit longer than i would leave my pets outside. 44 in san mateo, 48 in sunnyvale and 47 degrees in santa cruz at noon. so temperatures are going to climb all that much between now and 12:00 p.m. look what happens as we head through 3:00. temperatures in the upper 50s in many cities across the bay. the good news we haven't had rain, we've got a lot of rain on the way. in fact, a wet pattern setting up toward wednesday, thursday, friday. even saturday for the big game at candlestick park. so it all works out like this. this is what we expect. a big system of low pressure

>> welcome back everyone on a holiday monday, mlk day, that's the golden gate bridge, a live look at the traffic. very smooth and easy. it is 4:43. >> another republican candidate has dropped out of the race for president. nbc has confirmed that jon huntsman will quit the race this morning but he plans to throw support behind another candidate. here is tracie potts. >> i think it's a big deal you get the largest paper in the state to come out and endorse you. >> jon huntsman will drop out this morning and endorse mitt romney, a spokesperson says he doesn't want to stand in the way of the candidate best prepared to beat barack obama. >> in south carolina romney took $12 million and laid off

hundreds. >> romney has a 7-point lead t primary sunday and he's pummeled with negative ads. his name comes up in nearly every campaign event. >> i'm doing as well if not better than mitt romney against barack obama. >> i'm the one person who has a chance of defeating him. >> you don't have to let the popular media tell you who's best prepared to beat barack obama. >> in fact, ron paul's the only candidate focusing solely on his own success. >> did well in iowa, did well in new hampshire. we're going to do well next saturday. right. >> candidates admit if romney wins conservative south carolina, it will be hard to stop him from winning the nomination. as of today, romney gets one more vote from huntsman. huntsman is supposed to talk with romney.

tracie potts, nbc news, washington. >> rescue crews called off the search for missing passengers on board the cap sized cruise ship off the coast of italy. the ship right now is starting to sink. 16 people still unaccounted for this morning, six confirmed dead. crews suspended search efforts after the ship started slipping off the rocks it's resting on. the italian owner says this weekend the captain made a, quote, unauthorized, unapproved deviation from course. the ship's skapt now in police custody and could face manslaughter charges for this crash. >> the pacific northwest got its first taste of winter weather this weekend. snow falling along the oregon coastline and right into southwest washington state. sticking to the roads and well, making for a slick drive. the snow covering the coast range and the cascades. another system worked its way through overnight, of course bringing in more snow as you can see right there.

>> boy, we could use that. the system's going to come our way this week, right? >> oh, yeah. we're going to get everything we've been wishing for all this week. we've got this wet pattern that's not just going to last for a couple days. it's not like we're going to get a storm and things clear out. we have a very wet pattern that's going to last wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday, then finally sunday we might get a break but already temperatures are tumbling. we're at 22 degrees in fairfield, 29 in livermore, 34 in santa rosa. expecting to continuously drop off. san jose, it's clear out there. clear skies making way to a cold morning. and we have a cold air mass that moved in over the weekend. so, that cold air mass is going to keep things very chilly at least until about noon. grab your heavy coat. 42 degrees in san francisco now. you're at 38 in san jose. by noon today, holding on to the 40s, just about everywhere. fairfield up to about 50 degrees at noon. then we round out the day in the upper 50s, some cities only

making it into the mid-50s at the coast. 55 in san francisco, 53 later in santa rosa and 54 in los gatos so we need the rain. we've been talking about how badly we need it. the deficit this month and last month. look at the dip in the jet stream. finally we've been talking how the jet stream is taking the storm track into alaska. things are changing. you can see they are getting activity in the northern most portion of the state that's going to continue to ramp up as we head throughout the midsection of the week. the rain arrives for us wednesday into thursday. on and off showers thursday, friday, the bulk of the moisture comes through, then saturday and sunday we keep that rain in the mix. so, looks like that big game on saturday candle stick park, yeah, we're going to see a little rain. we'll talk about that coming up and what this means for the sierra nevada. that's all on the way. 4:47. back to you guys. >> looking forward to it. the stars were out in hollywood last night as the award season kicked off for golden globes. >> it's a big party and there were a lot of winners.

4:53 right now. >> this morning the bay area honoring the life of dr. martin luther king, jr. with its annual freedom train ride. the train departs from san jose's station this morning starting at 9:30, it will make stops in sunnyvale, palo alto before arriving in san francisco. they have a limited number of tickets to ride the train but they are still available. they are sold by south bay mlk association group when the train arrives many will take part in a march through the streets of the city. that means street closures. 9:30 this morning, the march route starting at fourth and king streets will be closed to traffic. the route includes third street howard street, and ends at yerba buena gardens. >> people gathered to honor dr. martin luther king, jr. >> be full of love, the kind of love that says you are somebody and i am somebody. let us bring those somebodies
