filled with butter and fat and now reports are swirling that paula deen has diabetes, will she change her cooking ways? first time in a live interview today, tuesday, january 17th, first time in a live interview today, tuesday, january 17th, 2012. captions paid for by nbc-universal television live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to "today" on this tuesday morning, i'm ann curry. >> and i'm matt lauer. rescue crews back at work inside the crippled cruise liner after they were forced to suspend their search for survivors because of bad weather on monday. >> take a look at the pictures that show what the rescuers are dealing with. making it nearly impossible to get around. meanwhile, a recording has surfaced between port officials and the captain, after he

already left his vessel, matt. >> apparently the port officials told him that there had been casualties on his ship. the ship he had already left and that he had to get back on that ship. an order he apparently ignored. we'll have the latest on that, straight ahead. also ahead, imagine if your child suddenly began to suffer if unexplained tics and verbal outbursts. it happened to 12 girls at the same high school in upstate new york. and no one can seem to figure out what's causing it. we'll talk two of those young ladies coming up. >> all right and also as we mentioned, reports are swirling all weekend that the popular chef has been diagnosed with diabetes, we're talking about paula deen. are they true? and if so, was it caused by the type of food she eats? we'll talk to her later on. we begin this morning with our lead story, which is about this italian cruise ship disaster. nbc's michelle co-dkozinski has

more. >> italian divers blasted a hole into the hull to get better access to cabins. while this was going on the ship's captain was arraigned on criminal charges, manslaughter, causing the wreck, abandoning the ship. the ship's company said he went off course too close to the island. he believes to show the ship off to villagers, many of whom ended up helping save the passengers. >> after days in jail, the "costa concordia's" captain gets one in court. accused of causing this disaster, going off-course, attempting to deliver the island a great view. this recent video of the "concordia" shows it had been done before. but the captain ended up hitting rock and turned to beach the ship. the italian press is reporting it might have been a stunt so the head waiter could see his

hometown. a newspaper had a phone call from the captain and the port authority from three hours after the accident. captain, this is an order, get back on the ship, there are casualties. the captain replies, how many? >> and the port said no, you tell me. >> now, up close the scale of it. parts of the ship you never see. rescuers straining to pull themselves over and inside. you get a sense of the terrifying for passengers. trying to get off. imagine jumping, infrared video shows them inching their way across the hull. all the way down to the water. >> when you considering whether you're going to survive or not, you know that other people are worrying about you, and that's the lesson. >> the company has commended the actions of the crew that night. >> we could find no survivor who agreed. >> the crew didn't have a clue
7:05 am
what they're doing. and even asked the guys, do you know what they're doing? the passengers were helping each other. the ones that are doing it? they're the cooks, the waiters. the health cleaning people. where's the officers that they have? they're all gone, they're not there. >> among the missing? americans jerry and barbara hyle. minnesota retirees who the family said they put four kids through college and finally had the means to travel. beyond excited about their dream mediterranean cruise that lasted three hours. the last rescue was sunday, now there's a state of emergency over worries that the half million gallons of fuel inside may be leaking. a modern marvel felled by what may have been a bad decision and a rock. one thing we know, prosecutors are presenting in their case against the captain is video that apparently shows the ship sitting for a very long time that night, at a safe angle that would raise a question, why
7:06 am
weren't the life boats lowered faster. why didn't things happen more quickly. although many passengers did tell us they could feel the ship tilting swiftly. ann? >> michelle kosinski, thank you so much. these women were both aboard the cruise ship during the accident. good morning to both of you. i want to get your response to the ceo of the company in his discussion and calling the, about the crew, saying he's grateful for the skill and the behavior of the crew, that the crew performed very well. what is your reaction to that? >> my reaction is that the crew was never informed. and i can't blame the crew. because they were never, they did not know anything. when we, everything happened, they just were telling us to go back to our room. i was trying to find out where the life boats, does anybody speak english? they did not give us any information whatsoever. they just kept telling us to go back to our room.
7:07 am
>> and this particularly frightening for you, marie. i understand you don't know how to swim. >> correct. i don't know how to swim. and there was no direction whatsoever. i think if the captain took more of a hand on it. then i think that the crew would have been able to understand what was going on. but they weren't getting any announcement. >> he also said that the cruise line rigorously trains its staff for emergencies. that they hold life boat drills every other week. you saw one of these drills on saturday before the accident. how would you describe the drill? >> we never saw a drill. >> oh, you never saw a drill? >> no, we never saw a drill. our drill was scheduled, we walked into our state room and i looked at the itinerary. and it says, the next day, 5:00 p.m., that's when our drill was. so we had never seen a drill. >> and you bring this up to some degree. because you've been on cruise ships before. >> yes. >> and you had a very different
7:08 am
experience on some of the other cruise ships. >> yes, within one hour of getting on the boat, you have to go, it's mandatory to go to the drill. they take your seat pass, they scan it and they make sure that every single passenger was there. and they make sure and they tell you, that if anything was to happen, that you are going to scan your seat pass and we're going to know who got off the ship and who is still on the ship. they know who to look for. here they didn't know who to look for and they're sending their crew members back on to find people that they never counted for anybody. >> you're describing chaos, essentially? >> yes. >> give us a feeling of what it was like? how were the crew members behaving? >> the crew members were walking around like the actual passengers. they had no idea what was going on. in my eyes. and they, they were just running around. they couldn't answer any questions. there wasn't anybody speaking
7:09 am
english. there was just, there was so much chaos. we went to go get on one boat when they finally found the alarm and the door would not open on that life boat. so melissa grabbed my hand and we went to the next boat. >> so basically you took your own rescue into your own hands it sounds like. >> yes. >> when you hear that the captain had left the ship, that he did not know that there were fatalities as we just heard in this report, what is your reaction. >> well, i didn't know that until we saw it. on the news. and it's just -- i mean, it's astonishing that someone would actually do something like that. i mean there was nobody who was in charge of our lifeboat. we had one individual that we found that spoke english from australia, a dancer and she ended up taking off and leaving because she said she needed to find her friends. so there was no one even from the costa cruise lines who said, stay at this lifeboat. this is what you're doing, you're going to get to the island. when we get to the island,
7:10 am
wherever we are -- they told us we were in nice, france, the crew members didn't know -- >> where you were? >> where we were. they had no clue, no one informed them. they said if the captain had, it was an emergency, he would stay. it would take an hour and a half for him to sound the alarm. >> do you just blame the captain? or do you blame the cruise line itself, maria? >> i believe that the cruise line should have been more prepared. they actually, even had taken our passports when we got on. and gave us a little ticket with a number on it. it wasn't even filled in with our name. and we asked for our copy of our passport. because we didn't have this experience when we were on our cruise in the royal caribbean. and they asked us, we said we needed a copy of our passport. and they said, we'll give it to you tomorrow morning. and as far as the, everything, the cruise people were in line
7:11 am
for information. i don't think anything was organized. i really do not. at one point i actually seen a bunch of crew members running past, about 15 or 20 of them and i said to my daughter, is that the captain? and she's like, mom, i don't think so. but -- >> obviously there's much more to be investigated in the story. thank you so much, we're so glad you're both safe. thank you for being with us this morning. it is now 7:11, now here's matt. now to a presidential politics. gop front-runner, mitt romney, faced some tough questions from his rivals last night. during the debate in south carolina. including a direct challenge to release his income tax returns. nbc's peter alexander is in florence, south carolina, peter, good morning. >> matt, good morning to you. remarkably, this was the 16th debate of this election cycle. describe it as aggressive, combative. the language used by the south carolina chair of the republican party was the gloves are off.
7:12 am
this is the big brawl. and that was exactly the case. the prime target again, mitt romney. >> former massachusetts governor, mitt romney. >> front-runner, mitt romney on the defensive from the very start. responding to tough questions about his time at bain capital. >> but there was a pattern in some companies, a handful of them, of leaving them with enormous debt. and then within a year or two or three, having them go broke. i think that is something he ought to answer. >> some of the businesses we invested in weren't successful. and lost jobs. and i'm very proud of the fact that we learned from the experience we invested in well over 100 different businesses. >> in perhaps the most heated exchange, rick santorum challenged romney over a pro romney add that criticized santorum for having voting rights for felons who have served their time. >> should they be given the right to vote? >> first of all, as you know, the pacs that run ads on various candidates said we unfortunately know in this country --
7:13 am
>> could you please have an answer to the question, first? [ cheers and applause ] >> we have plenty time, i'll get there. i'll do it in the order i want to do. >> the fight over so-called super pac ads intensified. >> if i had something in the super pac that was supporting me that was inaccurate. i would go out and say, stop it. >> senator and santorum and i have complained about with governor romney's super pac. over which he apparently has no influence, which makes you wonder how much influence he would have if he were president. >> we all would like to have super pacs disappear, to tell you the truth. you know what? this campaign isn't about ads, it's about issues. >> rick perry bluntly called on romney to release his tax returns. >> we cannot fire our nominee in september. we need 0 know now. >> when pressed, romney, who made millions in the private sector, seemed to open the door on releasing his returns. but was careful not to commit. >> we're showing a lot of
7:14 am
exposure at this point. and if i become our nominee, and what's happened in history, is people have released them about april of the coming year and that's probably what i would do. >> when one question suggested gingrich was trying to belittle the poor -- the crowd booed. then responded to his answer with a standing ovation. >> and if that makes liberals unhappy, i'm going to find ways to help poor people learn how to get a job, learn how to get a better job and learn someday to own the job. [ cheers and applause ] >> and mitt romney's republican rivals now just have four more days to try to knock him off message. there's one more debate. all of it leading up to this saturday's first in the south primary. matt? >> all right, peter alexander in south carolina this morning, peter, thank you. karl rove was the chief strategist for george w. bush's presidential campaigns and he served as his deputy white house chief of staff. he's now a fox news contributor.
7:15 am
good morning. how did mitt romney handle the onslaught last night in your opinion in. >> fine, he's the pin ata and te front-runner has to walk into the debates knowing that everybody is going to throw things at him. last nist wght was a debate of consolidation. romney held on to first place by making no major gaffes, newt gingrich solidified his hold on second place by having an effective performance and cleverly planting juan williams as his foil as the questioner. and ron paul helped rick santorum solidify his position in third place by having terrible answers for a state with lot of military and a very nationalistic attitude towards foreign affairs. >> these attacks on mitt romney for his days at bain capital, karl, critics over the last couple of weeks have said to these rivals, hey, you're going to mortally wound this guy before he ever becomes the nominee. and they seem to have found cover in this idea, that we're not mortally wounding him.
7:16 am
what we're doing is we're vetting him early and giving him bra, if you wi practice, to answer questions that the obama campaign will be asking during the general election. how do you feel about that idea? >> it's a little bit disingenuous. it said we're taking the unfair attacks that barack obama is going to unleash on him and we're unleashing it on him. look, when the "washington post" runs an article and says in this television movie being run by the pro gingrich super pac, it talks about four companies, two of the companies were bought by bain after romney left the company. and then were later sold by bain and when they were owned by others, including the toronto canada teachers union, the companies went bankrupt. but that's not romneys's responsibility. and the other two, the implications that the companies went out of business. the reality is that the companies are live and well. certainly, the company that had the florida facility making
7:17 am
industrial washing machines, consolidated the jobs in wisconsin. >> what you're telling me is they're not doing him any favors, even they they like to say this they are. >> i love the back and forth on the super pacs, newt gingrich said your super pac ought to be telling the truth. if you don't get them to tell the truth, how effective will you be as president? last friday speaker gingrich called upon the super pac supporting him to stop running the ads attacking romney over bain and as i understand it, they're understand continuing to run. this is a lot of folderol. and it doesn't matter that much in the outcome of the debate. it filled up time, but the essential thing was what each candidate did to talk about himself. those things had greater credibility than the attacks they launched against each other. >> then let's talk about the tax issue. here's what rick perry said to mitt romney. he said mitt, we need for you to release your incox tax so the people of this country can see how you made your money. so i hope you'll put your tax
7:18 am
records out there this week so the people of south carolina can take a look and decide if we've got a flawed candidate or not. i'm putting you in charge of mitt romney's campaign, karl. how would you handle this? >> i would have said more crisply what he said last night. that it's custom aariy for the presidential nominee to lay out his income tax information at tax time and if i'm in the race, i'll certainly do it in april, just as it's cust marry done. >> right now it's become one of those mysteries that hangs over a candidate. raising unwanted questions. >> you know what, with all due respect, matt, this is not the center point of the republican presidential debate. look, newt gingrich is releasing his tax returns this week. and romney pulled his punches, because there's rick perry lecturing him about putting out his tax returns. when rick perry put out his tax returns we learned that he's
7:19 am
double-dipping. that he's already arranged to get his state retirement from the state of texas at the same time he's getting the governor's salary. now if this was a critical issue and the race was going to turn on it, i suspect the romney camp woul assault and turned it back on him, and saying, wait a minute, now, aren't you the guy we now know is double-dipping? i'm not double-dipping on my government salary at the same time i'm getting a government retirement check. >> more proof you should be up there debating. nice to see you. >> nice to see you, matt. >> thank you very much. >> now a check of the rest of the top stories. natalie is on assignment so savannah guthrie is at the news desk. good morning. >> good morning. in the news today the ntsb released preliminary findings in the december propellor accident that severely injured the young texas woman, lauren scruggs. the pilot remembers leaving the engine running when he saw her exit the front door. the pilot recalls pushing her

it's a photo of 62-year-old nick kristy and to his wife and others it's troubling to look at because it conjures up the image of torture like something from an enemy prisoner of war camp. it's a photograph snapped in march of 2009, a picture lee county florida jail officials long denied even existed. nick kristy, naked, died to what's been called the devil's chair, a so-called spit mask around his neck and mouth. guards told investigators they repeatedly pepper sprayed him, dousing him ten times because he was combative. 62-year-old nick died just hours after the final blast of pepper spray, nearly two days after he was arrested. nick's wife joyce. >> you have seen the picture. what do you see there? >> torture. >> reporter: torture, she claims, of a man experiencing a mental breakdown. mistreated, she believes, like a

i can't imagine another human being doing this to someone. the manner of death was concluded to be homicide. his heart stopped beating after he was restrained and sprayed by pepper spray. after an internal investigation and review by t by the state attorney's office, no one's been charged in the death. the family is now suing the lee county sheriff's office. >> once he's restrained in the chair, he's no longer a risk of harm to anyone. >> reporter: so the pepper spray is vindictive? >> excessive. >> reporter: malicious? >> unjustifiable. >> reporter: attorney nick dicello says days earlier he was arrested for disorderly intoxication. locked up in that same jail. during that first detention, joyce christy called the deputies warning him of his mental condition. this is from one of her more than 25 calls. >> he is off of his medicine.
