>> a feel good day on a friday eve. good morning. thank you for joining us. it is 6:00. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. today let's check that forecast, though, the rain is on the way. meteorologist christina loren, you're busy in the new weather center. >> certainly this morning. i will be much busier later this afternoon. we have three storm systems on the way, all packing a lot of moisture. i do believe we will be back to our seasonal averages in terms of rainfall totals as of this sunday. you know how bone dry it is. that's an indication how much rain we are expecting. the first batch arrives later on this morning. we'll time that out, tell you when you might be able to get outside. we have a few opportunities over the next few days so stay tuned for that. mike's got an area that could slow you down. >> the issue is the dublin interchange which slows a lot of folks down. we're watching the report for

two oversized loaded big rigs at the interchange, reports coming in it's over on the shoulder but will be a distraction. no major slowing at the scene but 15 minutes out of the altamont pass. soon to see the backup. we'll track the rest of the commute coming up. >> thank you so much. right now we have developing news in the south bay, fire crews now are on the scene of a two-alarm fire in san jose. right now at least 40 firefighters are battling the flames at the home. this is on norwood avenue. firefighters we're told had to pull a man out of the home as the flames spread. we're told the attic, garage and other parts of the home are engulfed in flames. we do have a crew on the way and will bring you more updates throughout the morning. >> also new, the second fire in that neighborhood, actually no, that's not the story we should be on. right. okay. we changed that here.

let's get this back here. this is the second fire that neighborhood this morning, the firefighters are watching now for flare-ups after flames ripped through a home in san jose hours ago. the calm came in about 2:00 this morning. fire consuming the second floor and burning through the roof of the vacant home. that's east of the san jose municipal golf course. firefighters did have it under control. so far no word on what the cause is. the damage at this point estimated to be from 125 to $200,000. >> also during the night a san leandro undercover officer fired at by a driver. the officer was following a car about 9:30 near anza way. the driver made a u-turn and fired several shots. the car is described as a dark colored acura and last seen headed eastbound on 580 in oakland. >> it is a case that grows more and more dramatic by the day.

today san francisco's newly elected sheriff to make his first court appearance on charges of domestic violence. christie smith has more on these charges against sheriff ross mirkarimi and what his alleged victim has to say. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi will finally have a chance to answer to all of these charges that have been swirling around him. we're getting new information from his alleged victim, his wife, who is talking to the media and also saying that it may be her husband who is the real victim here. in another twist mirkarimi's wife is seen on a key piece of evidence crying and pointing to a bruise on her arm saying that her husband grabbed her in a confrontation that this happened not once but twice in 2011. his attorney tells the paper he knows the issue is out there but

there is no domestic violence. she also talked about the case to a radio station where he's from. here is translated version why she thinks that mirkarimi is the victim. >> this is a case of political persecution. there's people with a lot of money behind this political fight. the richest people in california are behind all this. they can't stand that a progressive with very little money won the campaign for sheriff. >> reporter: in that interview lopez also goes on to question the motives of that nab here videotaped the interview, suggesting maybe she had her own agaend agenda. mirkarimi insists he is going to stay in office while he fights these charges. reporting live in san francisco, i'm christie smith. back to you. >> thank you. it's another hit embattled administration of oakland mayor jean you can. her deputy mayor resigned

effective january 1. this comes two months after oakland's other deputy mayor resigned. the mayor's office says cohen will not be replaced. >> a muni driver will face charges in a fatal accident. emily done died when a bus hit her last toug august. prosecutor sas the driver wallace log kins should have seen done. he will be arraigned tomorrow. >> burglary suspects are accused of causing a deadly crash in newark. this happened in newark about 11:00 yesterday morning. police say three suspects were fleeing officers when they slammed into a car at a red light at 80 miles an hour. the driver of the car a pleasanton man, died at the the scene. they have been chasing but backed off before the crash.

>> the woman accused of killing her partner's mother expected to enter a plea, charged with murder for the death of the 65-year-old kirk on december 30. prosecutors say she attacked the woman with a machete type weapon, then told police that a man attacked both of them. she lived with kirk's daughter. >> 6:07. the teen accused of sexually assaulting two people twice his age is set to make his first court appearance. he's charged with robbery, sexual assault and kidnapping. right now he is charged as a envelope but the alameda district attorney's office plans to ask a judge to charge him as an adult once an evaluation is completed. >> supporters of a watering hole set to be shut down are hoping for a second chance. david chew and others will hold

rain is on the way, and the brand new bay area weather center with a look at the rain on the way. >> good morning. we've got a lot of rain on the way. this morning's commute will not be as rough as we're projecting so you want to plan on giving yourself time to get to work. a lot of people getting a way to the sierra nevada. make sure you have chains ready. we've got a lot of snow headed that way as we head through -- that was mike inouye by the way -- as we led to the next 24-48 hours. you can see now, the front is well to our north. let's time it out. we stop the clock on future cast. that's where we see light showers moving into the north bay. we continue to progress, stopping again at 4:00 p.m. showers to the north of the golden gate. in the south bay a relatively quiet day until we hit tonight.

then we get hit with the rain. this is the weakest of the three storms. i'd say the next four days, we'll continue to see those showers push on shore. look at what's coming in the next one. this is heavy rainfall not just for the north bay. this will bring heavy rain down to the south bay tomorrow night. that's when we get the most action from the second storm. then a break saturday, but hey, sunday, the third meanest storm with a vengeance. periods of rain, wid, isolated thunderstorms. this is the forecast for the nfc game. weather becoming a factor. that's good football viewing. more on that coming up. >> i know you are forecasting rain but i want you to forecast

issue of abortion. the latest nbc poll shows him leading with 34% of the vote in south carolina, newt gingrich is gaining on him, though, gingrich has 24%. cnn reports now that rick perry will announce he is suspending his campaign. as soon as we get official word of that we'll bring that to you. >> it is 6:17 now. i think we kind of got fooled, christina loren. feels nicer but that's just a calm before the real storm. >> yeah. actually we've got three real storms headed our way. all the way through sunday. sunday the meanest storm comes through, today's storm is actually the milder of the three. but it's still going to bring pretty heavy rainfall up through the north bay. i don't think we'll see that much heavy rain in the south bay. if you are living north of the golden gate bridge, yeah, you are fair game for moderate to heavy showers later today. the light spotty showers are moving in now. this is ahead of the front. this is going to drop into the

bay area. the jet stream is going to carry the first system to the north. so that's why the north bay is going to get the most action. the second one comes through, a warmer system. it's packing quite a bit more moisture. that's going to impact us as we head through your friday. friday night looks like a washout. you're going to get probably about 5 to 6 hours of pretty good weather before that rain arrives south of the golden gate bridge. 55 later on today in oakland, 54 in los gatos and 54 in santa cruz f. you live north of the golden gate bridge as of 8:00 a.m. showers start to ramp up. that's the first of two systems. we have a second system coming in on our satellite imagery. first one hammering seattle all the way down through the bay area. and yeah, that's just the first of three so it times out like this. through the morning hours we'll see showers start in the north bay and then heavier rain later on today. by friday, mostly cloudy start will make way to heavy, i mean

heavy periods of rain. we have an inch, two inches in the forecast for the second storm alone. then we get an even stronger system on the heels of that, sunday, in time for the nfc championship game. we're also forecasting the potential for strong thunderstorms and snow levels dropping to 3500 feet. that means mt. hamilton, maybe one to three inches of snow accumulating high atop mt. hamilton. that's exciting for us. just because it's been so dry, make sure you're ready. clean out the storm drains, you have time. we'll time that out coming up. first i want to check your drive. >> a note for folk. we get snow on mt. hamilton, we will, do not go up there. they will close. that always happens. right now the northbound traffic. it happens about now we see slowing. if it doesn't clear quickly, this is debris at actual tully.

probably an old tree, it's not cleared. we'll track this for your south day commute. that's the only issue right now. southbound right around jackling, reports of an accident there. that will be a distraction south out of fremont into milpitas. we had two disabled big rigs. they are out of the way but it's a distraction as you head to the dublin interchange. it's slow with this traffic. then over to the interchange we'll end with a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> mike, thanks. 620 uc students have a plan to get rid of tuition. the school system president says he will consider it. a group presented the the uc student investment proposal to the board of regents. the proposal would eliminate

of evidence could abvideotape taken by the neighbor which seems to show his wife crying, showing a bruise on her arm saying this happened two times in 2011 and in an interview with a radio station, lopez defended him saying that he may be the victim of dirty politics and that power brokers in california can't stand he is a progressive new sharp. here's what she had to say. >> i want to say that if it's unbelievable how i say these words i due have any complaint against my husband. we are together and we are fighting. we are going to fight. it's in my family, my husband and my son. >> mirkarimi insists that he is going to stay in office while he fights these charges against him. reporting live, christie smith.

back to you. >> thank you. the 14-year-old boy from oakland accused of sexually assaulting two women twice his age is street make his first court appearance. the boy turned himself in monday. charged with robbery, sexual assault and kidnapping for the attacks. he's being charged as a juvenile but the district attorney's office plans to ask a judge to charge him as an adult once an evaluation is complete. a popular east bay teacher will be in court on charges of having sex with a student. the 38-year-old is facing 21 felony counts for having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old. investigators say that james logan high school teacher began the relationship last march. they are looking for additional victims. >> the search continues for the 21 people still missing on the sinking cruise ship off italy's

coast. divers may have a small window of opportunity to search. rough seas are forecast for later in the day. you're looking at a live picture of the submerged cruise ship as it looks like photographers are out there taking photos. an american couple is among the missing. crews plan to start pumping half a million gallons of fuel from the ship. >> a city can soon use a message to combat gang violence. using a -- the tactic raises issues of civil rights and is just too expensive to enforce. supporters say it will make the city safer. they are already having success with different strategies. a no-kill center to open up. the planning commission approved a request by the group's

maddie's fund, the largest pet welfare foundation. the group says they will help other bay area shelters that don't have space or budget. the center is at the time to open up in 2014. >> you got to see this, gather round the tv. meteorologist christina loren you are busy tracking the rain. >> i am busy tracking the rain in this new weather center. i have all of the tools here. let's talk about what's happening. the radar lit up like a christmas street. not in the bay area but getting slammed by the first of three systems that will move orver the area as we head through sunday. the timing is tricky. the first system is the mildest of the three, the second system packing a lot of moisture carried all the way down through the south bay, then the third one is the coldest and meanest.

i think we might see pretty strong thunderstorms through the next few days. you've got all of this rain to the north, talking about that jet stream. when is gotting to take a dib and bring those storms in. we've got three on the way. let's stop the clock for 8:00 a.m. we are less than an hour and a half away from steady rain moving into the north bay. showers progress to about 4:00. you see the rain at 4:00 p.m. staying to the north of the golden gate bridge. those showers will continue to slide to the south between 4:00 and 11:00 p.m. when san jose will get wet. you could be facing a rough drive home. 2:00 friday, that's when the next one starts to move in. look how much moisture is on the way from this. all that red, yellow, orange, heave to moderate rain. we expect thunderstorms. i'll let you know what we're

expecting from the third most potent system. i do have opportunities for that. let's check that drive with mike. >> east shore freeway, a 20-minute drive to the bay bridge toll plaza. we'll look at the camera and we see the backup that formed as the metering lights were turned on. about 6:19. and the backup performing back to the 880 overcrossing. we'll take to you the south bay. some slowing happened northbound 101 as you approach actually road. a tree was down that has been cleared. that's -- a little bit of a break, maybe 20 minutes so that will be an issue. 84, that's the issue. the dumbarton bridge. it's reported slowing east bound

pretty good request football weather. but hey, this system is questionable. 52 for today. you'll get a little bit of sunshine in the south bay, limited sunshine north of the golden gate bridge. temps are staying cool. grab the umbrella. and let's show you what's happening. the jet stream taking a dip. we've got three storms on the way, picking up two. it just gets carried in. we're going to see these storms counting the pay area as we head through sunday. thursday, showers, periods of rain. by tomorrow, mostly cloudy start. rain returns heavily. we have major rain in the forecast for tomorrow, upwards of two inches here in san jose action then sunday the coldest storm moves through. the timing of this a little difficult now but right now i am forecasting pretty heavy showers during that championship game. so here's how it all works out. look at our totals that we're
