yes, yes, yes. it is friday and it feels good. good morning. it's 4:30. i'm jon kelley. >> tgif. i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. first let's check the forecast the rain has arrived for sure. meteorologist christina loren in the nbc bay area weather center. good morning. >> good morning. we've got showers on the radar we'll be tracking for you all morning long. right now we're getting the ligh tr rain,li heavy periods moving in, a stronger storm on the way. first, already some problems out there. we don't know whether it's weather related but mike inouye has the details. >> good morning. we know the roads are slick in san jose. this accident was declared a sigalert but it has cleared so now all lanes are open southbound 280 at the 87 connector downtown san jose but there were major injuries as a

result of this early morning accident. the victim has been taken to valley medical and the road is moving through the area. wet roads all morning. my eyes are peeled for other incidents. >> we know they are. 4:31. occupy protesters planning a day-long demonstration to try to shut down san francisco's fengs district. >> protesters will descend on banking, corporate and government institutions for occupy wall street west. christie smith is live with more on today's demonstrations and the protesters' demands. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you and happy friday. it's quiet now but a busy day in store for the occupy movement. they are going to start gathering here in 90 minutes and they are going to head into the financial district and start with what they call -- it's at goldman sachs after 6:00 this morning, they say what that does is it represents a vampire

squid. they are making signs. the point here, they say, is highlight the demands of the 99%, to disrupt business as usual. they say of course they are targeting financial institutions as they have done in the past that are tied to foreclose yurs and economic injustice. they promise a number of things, a flash mob, a street party, also a group will head to the 9th circuit court of appeals, they say they are protesting over corporate personhood, they say what that does is equates money to free speech. so get ready. it starts at 6:00 in the morning. they will go to noon and 5:00 so they have a full day of activities planned. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith. back to you. >> christie, thank you. marin county prosecutors planning to wrap up their case against joseph naso. he's the 78-year-old man accused of murdering four women including an oakland woman allegedly strangled with panty

hose. yesterday judith nasotestifying that her former husband asked her to claim she'd lost her panty hose. she says she can't recall leaving them anywhere but in a mesh bag at home. joseph nasois charged with killing four prostitutes between 1977 and 1994. the first victim was found in marin county. >> the woman accused of kidnapping and killing nursing student michelle le is set to return to court. she had been in and out of the court house over and over since her arrest last september. the legal process was first delayed because she gave birth while in jail. the case also hit another speed bump when she asked the judge for a different lawyer. this morning she is scheduled to be arraigned and possibly enter a plea. >> right now fire crews in reno are working to contain a fast-moving brush fire. more than 20 homes have been destroyed and 3700 acres burned

since this fire broke out yesterday. about 2,000 people are still evacuated. city leaders say this fire is similar to one two months ago that destroyed 30 homes. >> inconceivable that this community has been struck by tragedy once again. it's almost two months to the day since the colin fire. the first lady and i kathleen, want to lend our prayers and thoughts to those who have lost their homes. >> crews say the fire has already burned about six square miles. >> new this morning, a helicopter crash has killed american marines in southern afghanistan. the chopper went down in the hellman province. this is just the deadliest crash since august when a copter carrying 30 american troops was shot down in central afghanistan. >> republican presidential candidates are campaigning up to

the last minute in south carolina. polls open tomorrow for the state's primary. one candidate is in damage control mode this morning after the starting question at last night's debate targeted his personal life. tracie potts has the story. >> newt gingrich's wife of 18 years told abc he cheated on her while publicly promoting family values. >> he was asking to have an open marriage and i refused. >> he admits being unfaithful but chided cnn for making it question number one. >> to take an ex-wife and make it two days before the primary a significant question in a presidential campaign is as close to despicable as anything i can imagine. >> let me be clear, the story is false. >> this just hours after rick perry dropped out and endorsed gingrich. rick santorum questions whether gingrich's past could cost republicans the election. >> at times you got to sort of

missed the deadline to get his name on the ballot and write-ins are not allowed. >> maybe colbert 2016. we'll see. good news to report in a story we brought you on wednesday right here. an east san jose softball league dealing with a string of copper thefts will be able to start their season on time. great news. thieves recently ripped off equipment in the copper wire needed for the field lights. this morning the president of the league tells nbc bay area donations, they have been pouring in since the report went out to help fix this field. the copper wiring yes, has been in place and the season right back on schedule. >> good morning to you. 4:38. let's check the forecast. the rain that's falling with meteorologist christina loren. >> yeah, we've got a lot more on the way so let's get right to your forecast for this morning. tracking showers right now. especially to the south of the golden gate bridge. you see that batch that developeded. we're seeing pretty good shower activity from redwood city south to san jose. throughout the day we've got

more rain on the way. we're going to get steady rain as we head through the second half of the day and then we've got major rain headed our way as we head through tonight. the second system is pushing in. as we head throughout day we stop the clock at 1:00 and you can see that's when we get a little bit of light activity over the greater bay area. steady rain moves in. we stop the clock again at 8:00 p.m., take a look. we've got a lot of moisture upwards possibly of two more inches up in the north bay, we already picked up about an inch of rain. that was in san rafael. 54 degrees in fremont, 55 in san jose. we'll take you to the seven-day outlook, help you plan the weekend. we get the 49ers forecast ready to go. first the drive with mike. >> we have a wet roadways and as you drive with the grip on your roadway, so watch for that. we do have an accident on the peninsula, northbound 101 at holly street around the off ramp. that may have played a part, however, we're not going to say

that's the reason. we have the accident clearing. a smooth drive for 101, again wet roads along the peninsula. we have a number of issues. another one here, highway 9 at sanborn over in the hills between los gatos and saratoga. we have reports that a car went off the road on one of the smaller bridges and is, quote, hanging off the bridge. it sounds like it's a smaller overpass over a creek maybe and should be an issue only when the tow truck arrives. slick roads may cause your car to wander if you hydroplane. the rest of the south bay, a look at the golden gate bridge. you are see the sheen on the roadways, some crews moving across. no accidents or incidents likely moving the cones, going on now through 5:00 as they prepare for the morning commute. we'll watch as the rain affects your drive. >> it is an epidemic, that's right, but a good one. 49er fever has fans spending and of course betting their money on the red and gold. the 49ers now a 2.5 point

favorite in the game taking on the new york giants. vegas expecting heavy wagering between now and sunday. some bets on the 9ers running as high as 50 grand. got to imagine some even higher. restaurants and bars hoping for huge crowds ready to take advantage of the food and drink specials. they expect fans to be intense for this game. >> i thought we had something crazy with the giants world series. i don't know what to expect. it could be insane. >> hopefully insane 18 good way for the niners crushing them. fans pouring in, buying everything with the niners logo, jersey, shirts, sweatshirts. the popular items. >> controversial remark by jay leno has stirred up protests in the bay area. why indian-americans are lashing out at the show. >> divers again inside that sinking italian cruise ship. how deep they are going to search for the missing

>> welcome back everybody. it's 4:44. a live look in italy, this on the bottom hard to make out but that's the cruise ship submerged off of the coastal waters there. looks like rescue crews and a helicopter of course. we'll find out what that is. in the meantime, italian navy divers spent another day searching the wreckage of the

"costa concordia" trying to find 21 passengers still missing. they focused on the fourth level which is now about 60 feet below the surface where five bodies were found earlier this week. crews used explosives to blow holes into hard to reach areas to make it easier to search. >> let's get a check on the market this is friday morning. brian shactman is live at cnbc. brian, it's your world, good morning. >> i don't know about that but good morning to you. it's a pretty mixed picture in terms of pre-market trades. concerns about the debt talks re-emerging as we wait to hear news. we haven't heard anything. yesterday stocks finished higher for a third day putting major indices at 6-month highs thanks to encouraging bank earnings and jobs data. the dow up .4%, the s&p increased half a percent and the

nasdaq up .7 of 1 percent. three of the top names ibm, microsoft and intel, were better than expected in terms of profit. google, though, was a disappointing mix down about 8% in the premarket trade. so ibm is up, microsoft up, intel is up but google down. federal investigators shutting down one of the popular file sharing sites called mega upload.com. four people were also arrested in the global crackdown. i had not heard of it but it's huge. it's considered with what they call a cyber locker. users store shared materials often pirated movies and music so it's a big story. i don't know if you heard of it but i guess it's a big site. >> make sure we check it out. thanks for the heads up. >> it's 4:46. a welcome sight in the sierra. fresh snow is falling.

that's good for ski resorts but made for dangerous driving. there's more snow to come. emergency crews are reminding drivers to take it slow and be prepared with chains, plenty of gas and even some extra food and water just in case. better safe than sorry, that's for sure. >> snow in the sierra, and rain coming around here, much needed sounds like. >> good weekend for football as well. looks like a sloppy game in forecast. we'll get to that. let's get to what's happening out there. already instituting the chain requirements along i-80, you want to make sure you have those ready to go as we have a lot more snow on the way. i'm sticking to my forecast. six feet above 7,000 feet. that's a lot of fresh powder so get ready for that. still i think you're going to get the best skiing conditions through tuesday and wednesday when we start to get more sunshine in this active pattern slows down. safer for driving.

we've got spotty shower, we're going to see steady rain move in throughout the day, the next storm system pushing into northern california, so it all works like this. by 11:00, starting to get steady rain across the bay area. the heaviest of the rain which is more powerful than the first, that arrives tonight. let's advance the futurecast. show you when we expect that. see all the yellow and red, san jose getting smacked later on at 9:00 p.m. dangerous for travel. keep that in mind. we'll see the heaviest rain between 7:00 and 11:00 tonight. as we head throughout saturday a dry break that lasts through saturday afternoon. late saturday maybe a few showers pushing into the north bay. we get our next round ever rain, take a look at the clock, 3:00 p.m. sunday, just before the game starts. so yeah, if you're headed out there make sure you've got your rain gear ready. seven-day outlook, things aren't going to change that much until monday and tuesday.

then a ridge of high pressure is going to keep things mild for us. hey, take a look at the periods of rain, 53 degrees now. our san francisco 49ers, they know how to play in the rain. it's on our side. there is the seven-day outlook. drying trend starts tuesday, clearing by wednesday. you'll get sunshine up in tahoe on thursday, so if you like to see maybe with the suspenders on, you wear heavy equipment, you could do that on tuesday through wednesday next week. >> thank you for that sports music with the football highlight. i'm juiced up. scientists all over the world having a tough time now agreeing on time. an international body of scientists to discuss the leap second and that's like a "leap year." the leap second actually adds time to atomic clocks trying to keep them synchronized with the earth's rotation. the clocks would be off about a minute per century. the u.s. and france pushing to
