accurately forecast. let's put it in those terms. we've got a lot of rain now, you saw christie smith live and those were not light droplets coming down on her. we've got moderate rain, showers continue to ramp up. then it gets really, really heavy as we head through tonight. some of the heaviest rain that i've seen since i've been here in the bay area. that's what it looks like we can expect as we head through 9 to 11. we'll take you to the forecast, tell you when the sun comes back out. not going to make up the deficits but we've got a lot more on the way. let's see how it is impacting your drive. >> it is. wet roads of course from overnight but then friday a little later commute, that's when the rain is coming in, the next phase. we're looking to the san mateo bridge. to the right many can see the sign, it says high wind on the bridge. i think chp has canceled the high wind advisory but the storms are not over.

watch the slick on and off ramps. we've had a number of spin-outs. make sure the tires are in good condition. >> mike, thanks. talking about the roads, we're talking about the skies. several flights from the bay area to seattle have been canceled. seattle's airport is back open after all of the snow, but still getting in and out of there is stuff. four flights from sfo are canceled as well as three from oakland. we do have a live look at san jose, mineta international. there is a 6:30 a.m. alaska airlines flight from there headed to seattle. we just got word about 20 minutes ago that flight out of sjv canceled. alaska airlines precanceled 50 flights in and out of seattle tacoma. >> 6:02. that occupy demonstration aimed at shutting down the financial district is getting under way, called occupy wall street west

and could be causing problems and big time headaches for commuters. christie smith is live in san francisco now, umbrella in hand. the resalt here all of that rain could put a damper on this demonstration. >> reporter: it's getting kind of nasty. people are starting to gather at justin herman plaz but not the big numbers we expected. they said they were going to be here at 6:00. i'm thinking maybe they are on a rain delay because it's coming down. one woman told me some people may go directly to their locations. instead of meeting here which was the original plan. they are calling themselves ok iwall street west and say that they are trying to do is stop business as usual in the financial district and the federal courts, that support corporations over people. they want to end foreclose yurs and economic injustice. they are going to banks, hotels, immigration, even form a flash mob. they have events throughout day.

there is events in oakland and berkeley. we're going to keep an eye on it. their first stop is gold man sacks. they are going to have a squid fry to represent a vampire squid, telling people to bring your frying pan. right now we're not sure if that's happening. it's a small group but we'll check back in, that's the latest from here. i'm christie smith, back to you. >> thank you very much. occupy cal protesters not worried about the rain because they are camping out inside of a building on campus. the students have occupied kroger hall upset over cuts in operating, hours for the anthropology library, some faculty members are with the students trying to keep the police from removing them. campus police may be back to the sometime sometime this morning. we'll keep you posted throughout

the day. crews say they are gaining the upper hand on the fast moving brush fire. so far six square miles and 20 homes burned. the fire broke out yesterday prompting evacuation of 2,000 people. >> we are able to confirm that we have had in action says of 20 structures lost. these aren't out buildings, these aren't barns, they are foams. >> and at least one death has been reported in relation to the fire but officials will not say if the fire is directly responsible. >> a devastating accident here, a helicopter crash killed six u.s. marines in afghanistan. nato officials say they are trying to gather information but we can tell you there were no signs of enemy activity in the area at the time. taliban insurgents are they are claiming responsibility for

this. this marks the deadliest trash in afghanistan since last august. crews had to suspend their search of a sinking cruise ship near italy. this is the third time the search had to be temporarily halted. the "costa concordia" shifted making it very unsafe for the crews looking for missing people. the ship ran around a week ago. >> 6:06. san francisco police are hooking for a killer. they say a 31-year-old man was shot to death just before 8:30 last night at the corner of jennings street and revere avenue. investigators say it appears drugs were involved. it's the second homicide of the year. >> 6:06. marin prosecutors planning to wrap up the evidence presentation in the case of joseph naso. he is the 78-year-old man accused of killing four women

including an oakland woman allegedly strangled with panty hose belonging to naso's ex-wife. the ex-wife testified that her former husband did ask her to claim she had lost her panty hose. nasocharged with killing four prostitutes between 1997 and 1994. >> the woman accused of kidnapping and killing michelle le is set to return to court. giselle esteban has been in and out repeatedly since her arrest in september. the legal process has been delayed because esteban gave birth while in jail. the case hit another speed bump when she asked for a lifrnt lawyer. she is scheduled to be arraigned and possible hi enter a plea. >> a federal district judge in oakland says she will stop planned budget cuts to home welt care for disabled. back in december judge wilkins issued a court order blocking

the state from cutting in-home services by oun 0 million. yesterday wilkens order became a preliminary injunction. the cuts violate federal laws. >> on sunday the niners battle the giants at the stick, the price of course is the nfc championship and a golden opportunity to advance. bob redell joins us from knbr radio in san francisco where the faithful are buzzing about their 9ers. good morning. >> good morning. they have been talking about it all week. no surprise there. murph and mack their ears full about the big game this sunday against the giants. they tell us the vibe, they are confidence, they feel good about the game but they are not cocky. the 49ers, they are 4-4 in nfc

championship games. the giants have never lost an nfc championship game. there could be an exfactor with the fan base just concerning how much attention the new york giants are getting and seemingly how a little respect the 49ers are getting. >> reporter: they are confident they are going to win. we showed you sfo, wanted to show you this. we caught this on the way up. you can see they doused the outside the international terminal in red and cold in honor of the 49ers. and we got word anchor brewery here in san francisco, they made an unusual bet brooklyn brewery and the new york area. and the bet is this. if the int giants win they will serve brooklyn brewery beer for a week and also wear a giants

jersey. so let's hope we don't have any beer served here in san francisco. reporting live, bob redell. nbc bay area news. >> we hope that all of the barley and the hops will be nice and cold. >> looks like the forecast outside. how is that. meteorologist christina loren. >> you get an a for effort. we have temperatures in the 50s for the first time in almost three weeks. it's because of the cloud cover. a warmer system moving on shore. look at the totals. that we reached yesterday from the first storm. almost an inch of rain. over a half inch. walnut creek, .07 inch. look how much more is headed our way. as we head through the next 72 hours, two more systems, you see the yellow an orange.

these are the systems that could bring including. followed by a round of rain late sunday into monday. it looks like the showers are going to ramp up on sunday just in time for the big game. chances are if you're not headed throughout so that would make for interesting game. windy conditions, that will likely come into play when it comes to that game. 53 in hayward, 43 in fairfield. you can see how mild it is. temperatures marked out in the low 50s and we're starting without some of the day time highs. it's mild. the showers are coming down. pretty light but they are intensifying. that's going to be the case throughout the day. i'll take you through your hour by hour forecast coming up. first your drive with mike. >> i want to take you out and report the facts and talk about what's going on. on 24 we have an accident.

about the claims by gingrich's ex-wife that he wanted an open marriage. marianne gingrich made the claim in an interview with abc news. the other candidates avoided the issue but rick santorum does question whether gingrich's past could cost republicans the election. >> i love him but at times got sort of that worrisome moment that something's going to pop and we can't afford that in a nominee. >> cnn's latest poll shows romney still leading with gingrich 10 points behind. but gingrich is gaining support and romney is slipping. >> how about this for a treat. president obama showing he's got serious skills. ♪ i'm so in love with you >> not bad. i love al green's music. president obama broke out in song at a campaign fund-raiser

at the apollo theater in harlem, not a chance he would get booed off with that. al green was one of the guests and inspired the president to take on one of his classic songs. >> i will agree he did pretty well. >> smooth. >> 6:17. let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> good morning. i'm busy in the storm center this morning tracking these showers that are intensifying as we speak. this morning we're getting to the best weather of the day. as we continue the showers will continue to intensify. right now you can see it's already getting busy out there. make sure you give yourself plenty of time. three-hour delays out of sfo. check ahead because it's going to get worse before it gets better. you can see mostly cloudy conditions across the bay area, showers continuing to intensify. we've got a lot of moisture headed our way. stop the clock at 2:00 p.m. the greater bay area getting hit as we start to make your way

home on a friday. it could be rough. the bulk of the moisture comes through between 7:00 and 11:00, take a look at what's headed our way. you see the deep reds and oranges and yellow, that's heavy moderate rain. this will maintain its organization as it continues to slide south. through about 11:00 a.m. active weather on the way. look, san jose getting hit with hard rain at 10:00 p.m. it works like this. a break on saturday, then more rain moves in as we head through sunday in time for the game. i stopped the clock at 3:00 p.m. you can see we're going to see pretty good rainfall before and during the game. this is the forecast for the nfc championship, throughout the day today, temperatures are going to be mild, as we head throughout sunday, periods of rain, wind, 10 to 20 miles per hour. here's where it gets good. the new york giants are used to

playing in the snow. our niners know how to play in the rain and the mud. we have an advantage going into this when it comes to the weather. 53 degrees, windy conditions so whether you're going to be out there we'll probably all be watching it and it's going to be exciting. in the 50 this is weekend. then by tuesday we get a dry break, expecting thick fog. right now let's get you updated on your drive. >> despite the wet roads and the rain no major drama. we'll talk about northbound. a smooth drive. friday we tend to see a lighter volume. early morning we did have a report highway 9 at sandborn a car that went off from a smaller bridge. it's still there, no one injured. you'll hear that around the bay. no one is injured, they are waiting to tow that. here we're looking at 101 and 28.

along the peninsula the traffic hasn't kicked in. the rain has. that's why we have slick conditions. a couple of spinouts. those have cleared. again, watch those conditions, they will play a factor. also a factor this, the financial district, christie smith is out there, occupy wall street west is what's going on today so. there may be closures along market, california or pine as a result of marches. she'll have that. we'll end with a map of the north bay where we had earlier flooding. one of the usual suspects will keep their eyes up for that. >> thanks. 6:20. coming up a live report from reno where the wild fire dest y destroyed 20 homes and forced thousands to evacuate. >> are factory workers animals? e ayth ss ssthey are. ♪

>> fire crews are battling that massive wild fire near reno. nbc's miguel almaguer is live with the latest for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. good news to report off the bat. the fire is contained at 50%, so crews are making some headway. yesterday it was zero percent containment so some certainly some measurable progress for firefighters last night. the fire broke out yesterday afternoon at around noon time.

it quickly jumped from yard to yard to neighborhood to neighborhood. some 10,000 people were asked to evacuate homes. hundreds of homes were in the path of the fire. at least 20 destroyed. homes in the structures like this, that number is expected to rise when the firefighters are able to get a first look at the damage with the first sunlight that rises. that number could jump to as high as 50 we're told. when the sun comes up it will be bad news. the good news for them weather wise is these wind conditions though they are still brisk, they are expected to lighten to 40 miles per hour. yesterday they were around 80 miles an hour. everyone in this area was evacuated. the vice president was in town. he was forced to evacuate. fire officials let 8,000 people back to their homes. we'll see what happens with those orders later on this morning. firefighters are go to have their hands full later on in the next few hours.

back to you. >> miguel, thank you. >> scott mcgrew says more controversy this morning over the factory in china that makes everything from your iphone to your box. >> the company in china seems to have called his employees all one million of them animals. the slight was first reported in the china daily, a newspaper that's critical of fox conin the past. he made a joke comparinging his job to a zookeeper saying people are animals and he is responsible for the feeding and well being of a million animals. the comment is causing back lash. but you need to be a little cautious. critics in the west reacting to an english translation of a comment in chinese as reported by a newspaper. a lot can be lost in the process but still probably a dumb thing to say.

the fbi working with police have busted and shut down a website hollywood accused of storing pirated movies and music, called mega upload. did it seem to contain pirates movies. celebrities used it. here you see the four in custody. it was an online locker to be used for good or evil. a slap in the face to supporters of laws. proving piracy can be stopped with current laws. what happened is the stead of the motion picture association of america chris dodd suggests hollywood and silicon valley get together to discuss a new set of laws to discuss online piracy. try to figure out something that will work for everybody >> what a novel approach. >> still ahead on "today in the bay," 49ers through the area.

yellow, that's moderate rain. we'll see heavy rain later on tonight. i'll tell you when that reaches your door, how much we expect. and of course we've got the big game forecast on the way. as you know when it rains it slows down. >> you know, also you should slow down because of the slick conditions. we have a lot of smaller accidents reported right now. we have the latest main street on ramp. 680 folks heading down to the walnut creek interchange. 24, keep that in mind. slowing typical for highway 4 through antioch and heavier rain about a half hour ago through concord, 680, 24 likely to get hit. an accident on 24 to tell you about coming up as you head over to the maze. >> mike, thanks so much. new this morning some arriving flights at sfo are delayed up to three hours because of the rain that's falling here. and flights from the bay area to seattle are canceled because of the snow there. seattle's airport is back open after all of this snow but

getting in and out is still tough. four flights from sfo have been canceled and three from oakland. a 6:30 alaskan flight is canceled as well. >> the occupy demonstration aimed at shutting down san francisco financial district is under way. we can tell you the rain could end up washing out the day of action. occupy wall street west got off about a half hour ago but only really a handful of protesters are there right now. activists from 50 organizations planning to target more than 20 banks and financial offices. protesters also planning a march flash mob event to take over an unidentified foreclosed building. we'll have the latest coming up in a live report at 6:50. >> today's protests in san francisco coincide with more than 100 planned dem straxs. this is the second anniversary of the landmark u.s. supreme

court decision that removes most limits on corporate and labor spending in federal elections. demonstrators call for a constitutional amendment to overturn the ruling. protesters will gather outside course houses including in san francisco, oakland and san jose. >> this morning at least one person is dead and thousands out of their homes as firefighters battle a fast-moving wild fire near reno. a look here, crews struggling to hold the line. 20 homes have been destroyed in a six square mile area. right now at least 2,000 have been evacuated. one person was found dead in the fire area but the cause of death at this point has not been determined. >> terrible news of being confirmed out of afghanistan. a nato helicopter has crashed and six u.s. marines are among the ten dead. the crash happened in the

helmand province. the cause is still being investigated and while there was no enemy activity in the area at the time, taliban insurgents are claiming responsibility. the six marines are a few of many nato troops to lose their lives in the middle east. at least 10 troops have been killed in northern afghanistan in 24 hours a. french officer says a soldier from the afghan national army shot four troops after an argument. the president is suspending training programs following that attack. >> a judge says she will stop planned state budget comes to home health care for disabled and elderly californians. in december judge wilkins ordered an order blocking the state from cutting services by $100 million. yesterday the order has become a preliminary injunction. the judge says the cuts violate

that came down in san rafael. point reyes over a half inch. but hey, i think we'll all, every city across the bay area be measuring that rain in inches before the night is done. let's talk about how much more rain is coming. we had three systems, the first one done, this is what we expect from the next two systems. look at this. you find on the key look for your city. two to five inches where you see the orange. 1 to 2 inches where you see the yellow. and this is in addition to one inch we picked up. keep that in mind. not a lot of drying out so flooding is a factor. we're getting hit from redwood city south to los gatos. you see the yellow on the way to marin county that's moderate. that could be dangerous for the morning commute. >> all right. let's take you out of here to highway 24.

area. and let's tell what you that means for the nfc championship game as the giants take on our own san francisco 49ers at candlestick park. if you have been to candlestick you know a little wind makes a big impact there in addition to the rainfall coming down you want to bring your rain gear with you. i think we're going to see a sloppy second half of the game. by monday a few showers early, then the drying trend starts tuesday, wednesday, thursday, but we still have a lot of remnant moisture from the storms that come through. so, i'm forecasting widespread dense fog starting tuesday, and that could really come into play when it comes to the morning commute. let's find out how the showers are treating the drive. >> we have some heavy showers through concord and contra costa county, then we had a number of accidents. the latest here is 680 southbound we had four lanes blocked about with 15 minutes. but the accident has cleared, made quick work of that. south off highway 4 look at the
