and certainly not the kind of rain we saw overnight either. thanks for joining us this morning. i'm kris sanchez. let's get right to the weather. strong winds tapering this morning but not before wrecking the roads and taking out the power. the heaviest rain hit last night bringing down a tree in mill valley. this happened on paradise drive, ironically. the tree brought down power lines. crewed closed down the road. about 29,000 pg & e customers lost power. some downtown areas of mill valley were flooded. several blocks of shops and offs had to be protected with sandbags as well. this is video of san francisco, heavy rains and winds gusted through the city and pummeled the city. this morning there are reports of flooded and slick roadways all around the bay area. and getting ready for tomorrow's big game, fans could be delayed

getting into sfo. flights running behind schedule. that's this morning. nbc bay area meteorologist rob mayeda tracking it for us. >> you saw the problems there on that video. i can show you the reason why once you take a look at these incredible rainfall totals in the last 24 hours. we've had a dry winter and then all of a sudden within 24 hours 6 inches of rain came down around ben lomond. as you get to the north bay, the problems in mill valley, over 3 inches, close to 4ç inches rai around larkspur. looking forward to tomorrow. this is going to be round three as we're watching the, of course, the 49ers taking on the giants. kickoff 3:30. chances of rain increasing as we go to the game. we'll talk about the challenges that could pose for the game.

i do want to take you on a quick tour of the radar. we're now in between storm two which rolled in and blasted through the bay area last night. we have the leftover showers to deal with as we go through the day. the sierra finally seeing a good dose of snow. scattered showers for the morning. eventually we'll see decreasing showers heading into this afternoon. this brief break will not last long. upper 50s and tomorrow more clouds spill in, more rain and wind, maybe even thunder, all part of that sunday evening forecast. a look at that coming up in a few minutes. kris? >> we are more than 30 hours away from kickoff at candlestick park when the 49ers take on the new york giants for a chance to advance to super bowl xlvi. there's a comprehensive plan to deal with unruly fans as well. as san francisco international airport welcomed out of town football fans with red and gold on the international terminal, san francisco police say they were getting ready for troublemakers on both sides of

the field. the cops will be in force more than fans might realize. >> last week we had 25% increase over a regular season game staffing. we continue to have that 25% bump-up but there will be additional officers both in uniform and plain clothes. >> sunday will be a celebration for both teams, at least before the game is over. an even bigger celebration for the home team to host a nfc championship in more than a decade for the first time. emotions will run high no matter which team advances to the super bowl. that is why many san francisco police will be out in force to be sure tomorrow's game will be enjoyable for everyone attending. cleanup continues this morning after occupy sp targets a luxury car dealership and abandoned hotel. two protesters smashed up the bentley dealership on van nuys avenue. s there a large crack in one of the windows. just a block away be

demonstrators surrounded an abandoned hotel. 20 to 30 protesters were inside the cathedral hill hotel yesterday. we're told protesters broke in through a back entrance of the hotel, climbed up on to the roof and hung an occupy sign on the building. there were reports they were throwing furniture as well. dozens of police officers in riot gear were there, trying to prevent about 200 protesters still outside the building from getting inside. by 11:15 last night, officers were able to take control 6 the building. three protesters were arrested for trespassing. at least one person was pepper sprayed. earlier in the day, at least 19 other people were arrested as the occupy movement held citywide protests. >> they made attempts to use bottles, bricks and rocks and throw them at the officers. two of our officers were injured from that incident. they also used their umbrellas, kind of like grappling hooks to latch on to the barricades and

rip the barricades down to gain entrance. >> i saw inside the building. it's actually quite nice. we have to pay attention to the spin we put. the job creators want to keep the people safe. they're going to arrest people, put them on the streets and destroy a bulling that has hundreds and hundreds of rentable units. >> the occupiers chose the building as a site of protest because cp & c plans to downsize luke's hospital and convert this building into a small hospital with about 500 beds. a san jose girl's kidnapping ordeal is over as she's reunited with her family. .11-year-old was kidnapped at gunpoint thursday night from a home in san jose. police say the suspect forced his way into the house, attacked a family member, then kidnapped his exgirlfriend's 11-year-old daughter from her bedroom. the kidnapping triggered a statewide amber alert.

the suspect, the 42-year-old, took her to an apartment nearby. when police caught up with him, he allegedly threatened the girl and opened fire on police. >> at that point it became obvious that the victim's life was in imminent danger and the s.w.a.t. officers decided to make an entry. they went to the front of the house, forced enter and encountered the suspect again inside the residence. the suspect opened fire with a firearm. one of our s.w.a.t. officers was able to get a shot off and hit the suspect. >> he was pronounced dead at the scene. the 11-year-old was not hurt in the ordeal. she's now safe with her family this morning. if you're shopping for a car on craigslist, oakland police say you need to know about bogus listings that turn into armed robbery robberies. thieves are luring people and setting up meetings near lake ma marrett. the scam has been going on since december. crime stoppers is offering a

this is "today in the bay." san francisco waking up awash in red and gold pride. clearly one of the buildings there lit up with san francisco 49er colors. we also see the flags whipping in the distance. we'll talk about the weather for kickoff with rob in just a little bit. first this morning our investigative unit digs into the 49ers, not the players, not the fans but elected officials. some of them are getting free luxury tickets for sunday's big game.

california ethics rules preventing elected officials from accepting gifts worth more than $420. there's a loophole and some san francisco leaders are taking full advantage. here's nbc bay area investigator tony koleski. >> 49er fever is right here in san francisco. >> reporter: mayor lee won't be alone. he gets aç free box at candlestick park, a luxury box that includes 12 tickets to the big game. get elect, get tickets. all 11 members of the city's board of supervisors received free tickets. some stadium seats for every home game, including the playoffs. >> it's very improper and it is unethical. >> reporter: peter keen is an ethicist and professor of law at golden gate university. >> the supervisors getting this type of gift, not paying for it, that has an enormous appearance of impropriety.

it shouldn't be done. >> reporter: the rec and parks department runs the stadium and gets a load of free tickets. the seven-member rec and parks commission gets a luxury box big enough to seat 20. while fans pay, free tickets are available to elected leaders and some well-positioned city employees. >> what it says to me is that the supervisors are getting some extra pay that's coming to them from a very strong economic entity in the city and county of san francisco. the 49ers. >> reporter: clearly the value of the tickets exceeds the state gift laws. san francisco and some other california cities have created a loophole to avoid the ethical dilemma. here's how it works in san francisco. because the city owns the land and the stadium, it elected not to lease theee thrhr box locatis and the 22 stadium seats to the 49ers. by keeping control of those portions of the stadium, about 66 total tickets, elected

leaders can argue, they're not receiving anything from the 49ers. >> i think that's a very elitist view that the supervisors are taking. it really is something of an insult to the intelligence of people. to say, well, san francisco owns the stadium. the people of san francisco own the stadium. if that's the case i should be able to go to the game free. >> reporter: supervisors have said they will accept the free tickets to sunday's game. now, this is interesting. supervisor david chu told nbc bay area he's decided not to take the free tickets. he's going to the game and paying the city $214 per ticket. also we have confirmed some san francisco lawmakers have donated their tickets to schools and nonprofit organizations. san francisco city attorney has issued a ruling saying it is okay for elected leaders to accept the tickets. that's the loophole. >> and that was our lead investigator. what do you think? is it unethical or is it a

midday today. all the rain in the bay area finally dumping snow in the sierra. notice the numbers this morning, 40s and 50s outside. kind of a muggy start and we still have a few showers around. but you'll notice the winds, it's breezy but nowhere near as gusty as what we've had last ç night. the rain and wind, here's the great news. the rinse cycle went on last night. so our air quality has not looked this nice, if you've had allergies or respiratory issues, finally, air quality looking good around the bay area. morgan hill picked up 2 to 3 inches, down around san martin and morgan hill overnight. dry for now in san francisco. east bay hills also catching a bit of a break. a few scattered showers as you get up here towards the delta and the north bay. most of action heading into central and southern california. some lightning, too, there east of fresno. there you see all the snow in

the sierra. the main transition, notice the popcorn-like clouds offshore. that will fire up scattered showers as we go through the afternoon. here comes the next wave, the wide angle view shows you as we get closer to the start of the nfc championship game tomorrow right here in san francisco. for today, you have the rain pushing on out. notice a few scattered showers as we go through the afternoon. tomorrow morning, we see what we'll call a warm front rain or light rain spreading back across the bay area. this is right around the time we'll see the rain spread back over the bay area during the day tomorrow. and towards the evening, breezy conditions and watch what happens here. sunday night on into monday, pretty good blast of rain, could include some thunder as this cold air starts to sweep on in. this is nor your monday morning commute. storm three will impact the end of sunday into monday morning. as quickly as monday afternoon, skies start to clear out. things look good monday afternoon into tuesday. around the bay area, we start

off in the 40s to low 50s. cooler, relatively drier air will come in which should help shut down the showers. 58, san jose. not much change as you head over to san francisco. the sierra, finally, we are talking about snow, close to 4,000 feet later on today. this is great news. at least 1 to 2 feet, maybe up to 3 feet of snow in some of the locations above 6,000 feet. not is good news in the seven-day forecast. first we have the championship game tomorrow. may be a little soggy and breezy, too. notice we have another dry pattern setting up monday into tuesday and wednesday. we will see some warming conditions as we head towards the middle part of the week. that game tomorrow, does look like we'll see rain increasing as we go through the game. as is the case, we had about 1 to 2 inches of rain out there overnight. that field, especially toward the second half could get sloppy. it may impacts things as the

the hispanic community action summit starts at evergreen valley college at the gullo ii building. now to a nightmare with a happy ending. a 9-year-old colorado girl kidnapped by 29-year-old man, outsmarted that kidnaper. calista cordova's mother reported her missing thursday. police issued an amber alert and started a search. then yesterday morning, the car calista was in with her alleged kidnaper broke down. a passer-by picked them up. at a convenience store, she called 911. she's safe with her family, her kidnaper behind bars. now, squirrel appreciation day. who knew there was such a thing. an odd time of year for such a day. unlike other mammals, squirrels don't hibernate. they'll dig up your lawn any

two newborns have astounded the medical commune in the terms of how they came into this world. we spoke with parents who are enjoying their little ones born under the rarest of medical services. >> reporter: allison camp was 19 when she learned she was born with a rare condition called uterine didelphys. she can bare children, in fact

she and her tim had two by the time they learned they were pregnant again. >> we're joking around with my regular ob that on "grey's anatomy" there was a body that had a baby from each uterus. >> reporter: that stopped being a joke. >> she said here's the baby in the right uterus and here's the heart beat and everything looks great. i did scan around and here's the baby in the left uterus. at that point we both started swearing. >> hot flashes. >> i thought he was going to pass out. >> reporter: allison says her research indicates prior to her there had only been 73 documented cases in the world like hers. the doctor who supervised her high-risk pregnancy would only put it this way. >> very rare. i've never seen it. i've done medicine for 40 years. >> reporter: in october, the decision was made to deliver her two sons, 14 weeks prematurely when they weighed just a pound and a half each. carter, now almost 7 pounds went home a week ago but still

requires a heart and respiratory monitor. the other çnewborn, remains in the hospital but is expected to go home soon. >> it just seems unbelievable that we've been this fortunate that we'll walk away, for all intents and surprises, will walk away with two healthy children. as the boys get older, they hope to instill in them they ought to believe in themselves because they've been through a lot worse already and have overcome it and the sky is the limit. a man in the midwest is recovering from a bizarre accident this morning. he was doing some home construction when he accidentally shot himself in the head with a nail gun. donti shot a 3 1/2 inch nail into his skull and brain. he didn't realize it right away. i never understood how that happens. he didn't seek medical attention until the following day. he had surgery, he's now

area. a and, of course, getting ready for the big game, fans could be delayed getting into sfo. flights running behind schedule still this morning. nbc bay area meteorologist rob mayeda is tracking the storm from the weather center. you were saying tomorrow's band looks even stronger than you thought it might be in the first place. >> it looks like the rain, especially by tomorrow night will be picking up and becoming heavy again. but boy, speaking of heavy rain, take a look at the rainfall totals just over my shoulder, ben lomond, more than 6 inches of rain came down. we had moisture slamming into the santa cruz mountains, you get the maximum rainfall potential out of that. the air drops into the santa clara valley, eases off a bit but not the case around morgan hill. almost 2 1/2 inches of rain, san francisco and oakland, close to 1 1/2 inches. you saw the problems in mill valley. here's the reason why. many locations have close to 3 or even 4 inches of rain out near larkspur. for the game tomorrow,ç this wl

"today in the bay" reports, sunday is a celebration but also a cause for concern. >> reporter: when the new york giants and their fans land at sfo, they will be greeted by a red and gold tribute to the san francisco 49ers. giants fan mark crawford and his friend said they aren't phased by the fan fair. >> we're ready to go. we're all ready for sunday. >> what's going to happen? >> it's going to be a win for the giants. >> we already know what's going to happen. giants are going to the super bowl. >> reporter: 49er fans were cordial on the plane. >> we're excited. >> reporter: but police are concerned about what some overenthusiastic fines might do at the stick. a preseason brawl between raider and niner fans was caught on tape. last week, when the saints came to town, close to two dozen people were arrested for unsportsman-like conduct. this time, san francisco police are stepping up security by bringing in more officers to dress up in plain clothes and

this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. looking live at oakland. lots of strong winds and gusts and also lots of rain. some folks out of power in the east bay. that appears to have been restored. a very special and very fun fund-raiser for hiv and aids is just five months away. it is, of course, the aids life cycle, a seven-day bike ride from san francisco to los angeles. today you can get a preview in the city. today, hundreds of cyclists and volunteer roadies and supporters will pedal in an event that marks the official start of training and fund-raising for that bike ride. it's the largest annual hiv/aids fund-raiser in the world. these are pictures from last year's ride. today's kickoff starts at 1:00 this afternoon at the temple nightclub an howard street in san francisco. more than 50,000 people are expected to participate in a peaceful demonstration this afternoon at civic center plaza in san francisco.

what led to the totals. the winds, it's breezy out there. nowhere near as gusty as we had last night. sfo had gusts close to 50 yesterday evening with the low clouds and the rain, that did cause flight delays for arriving flights. so far this morning, things improving at our local airports. breezy, southwest winds at 15 into livermore. the radar shows you showers around the east bay hills, heading down towards the santa clara hill tops. i think we're going to hang on to this for the afternoon as we have moisture, rising up over the hilltops which will continue to keep the showers going. not so much around san francisco but you canç see lighter rain around oakland, heading over to concord and walnut creek. towards the north bay, a few more hit and miss showers as we watch now. scattered showers coming in for the first half of the day and eventually some drier air. i think just a real brief break late this afternoon on into

early tomorrow before the next round rolls in. you can see the unsettled weather that works its way down the coast. lots of snow in the sierra. winter weather advisory for elevations above 4,000 feet in the high country today. tomorrow, more sierra snow. taking you through the hour-by-hour forecast, right around this time tomorrow morning, we'll see the next wave come on in. this will be the warm front with this next system. winds picking up again out of the south. we'll likely start off the morning with 40s and low 50s. another mild start for tomorrow. then as we go through the game, the game starts at 3:30. may not have a whole lot of rain to start but very likely as the game goes on past halftime into the second half. the rain is picking on up. look what happens, sunday night no monday morning, unsettled pocket of air sweeps on through. possibly some thunder with this. this is going to be around 10:00 sunday night on into 4:00 a.m.

monday morning. and then by monday afternoon things rapidly clear out and not so good news here. high pressure will build in behind that stimulate tomorrow into monday. that's going to set us up for more dry weather showing up in the seven-day forecast. for now, you'll find scattered showers today, likely in the hill tops and the santa cruz mountains as you get towards gilroy, morgan hill, you may see intense showers for first half of the day. also around the east bay hills around livermore. notice, the temperatures as you get to truckee, finafinally, 30. more snow due in tomorrow. the seven-day forecast, again, not the best timing. we'll have to see how this rain impacts the game tomorrow. the rain we've already had, likely we could see a soggy field where sanctions get worse during the game. turns into a little bit of a mud bog. could see that for the second half as you saw in that forecast. the second half of next week does look really dry, again, 50s

this is "today in the bay." welcome back. here's a live look at the radar which looks drier than it did when i came in at 3:00 this morning. you can see right now, san jose not seeing much in the way of showers. a few up towards the east bay hills, san francisco, relatively dry. caster valley, heyward. the same story as we get up to santa rosa. the sierra, it is snowing down to 4,000 feet. we will continue to see snow flying as we wrap up the weekend. around the bay area, decreasing showers but the santa cruz mountains, santa clara valley
