captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a sunday. i'm lester holt. >> and i'm jenna wolfe. what a difference a week makes in the world of politics. we were in such a different place a week ago than now. >> looked like romney could run the table. you look back and we've had three winners of the first three contests. that's never happened. we'll be in this for a while. newt gingrich pulled out a big win in south carolina. now rewriting his political playbook. a couple weeks ago mitt romney was expected to wrap up the nomination with a win in south carolina but now the race is wide open. we'll get reactions to saturday's primary and look at what's next for the gop candidates as things get very, very interesting. then as mentioned, we'll head to pennsylvania to get the latest on former penn state head coach joe paterno. the 85-year-old is said to be in
6:02 am
serious condition after experiencing health xlicti complications while battling lung cancer. his family say he's supported and deny false reports on the internet. we'll talk about a girl's basketball team outside chicago that seem to have the winning formula. this team has been undefeated for four seasons. their record, 146-0. we'll meet the team and find out its secret for success as they head into playoffs. >> a lot of girls have never lost a game. they have no idea because they've gone all four years of high school without -- >> great legacy. great story. and then how about some synchronized swimming to start your sunday morning? this may look easy but the sport requires great endurance, great flexibility, great grace and great timing. >> and you were there? >> and i was there to kybosh all of those things. >> wasn't sure where we were going with this but you were
6:03 am
there? >> i definitely played with the grace a little bit. we'll see if i sunk or swim coming up. i had no idea what was happening, lester. >> my hat's off to you because that does look difficult. >> it does. give them credit. >> and water in your ears, right? >> everywhere. in the week in buzz, one of hollywood's most popular couples, heidi klum and seal said to be headed for a break. we'll talk about that and other celebrity feuds coming up. history hire making primary, newt gingrich erased a double digit deficit in the polls to win the south carolina primary. three separate win rz for the gop presidential contest. rick santorum in iowa. mitt romney in new hampshire. now gingrich in south carolina. ron mott is in columbia with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. newt gingrich pulled off something that seemed impossible just a week ago. he came here, he spoke the language, he got the vote out and in the end, he shocked the establishment and then some.
6:04 am
at 68 he's far from a kid but not from a comeback. former u.s. house speaker newt gingrich, after forgettable showings in both iowa and new hampshire, surprised naysayers and maybe even a few supporters winning the south carolina primary in dramatic fashion. >> thank you. good luck, and god bless you. >> reporter: sharpening his tongue against mitt romney -- >> where's mitt? i thought he was going to -- i thought he was going to stay and maybe we would have a little debate. >> reporter: president obama -- >> he has been the best food stamp president in american history. >> reporter: even a debate moderator. >> i am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate with a topic like that. >> reporter: just about anyone who crossed him or his self-described reagan conservative line. >> what gingrich did in south carolina was unite the conserve ty vote. if he can do that in florida and
6:05 am
beyond, watch out. he could actually get this nomination. >> reporter: while the gingrich campaign soars to florida on the wings of victory, mitt romney heads to the sunshine state under a cloud of doubt having lost a double digit lead to finish second in south carolina. >> we're now three contests into a long primary season. this is a hard fight. because there's so much worth fighting for. >> reporter: as for former pennsylvania senator rick santorum, competing with gingrich for conservative vote, he vowed to continue inviting into florida and nevada thereafter. >> three states, three winners, what a great country. >> reporter: texas congressman ron paul greeted his enthusiastic supporters saying his campaign strategy is simple, keep running, keep selling a message of change. >> this country is coming our way. this campaign has a long way to go. the momentum is growing. >> reporter: voters in florida go to the polls in just nine
6:06 am
days on january 31st. that is a virtual eternity in primary politics. expect a lot of money to be spent between now and then. >> david gregory, moderator of "meet the press." good to see you. >> hey, lester. >> long night for all of us. looks like the reset button has been pushed in this race. fair characterization? >> i think so. i think you've got three different contests, three different winners, fundamental questions for romney now and as chuck todd suggests in ron's piece, the ability of gingrich to unite republican party. there is a disconnect between the establishment of the party that is clearly said it wants mitt romney and the revenge of the tea party saying, not so fast. there's anger, there's anxiety. among conservatives, among grassroots of the party. and gingrich in south carolina connected to that. he was the candidate of grievance, if you will, and that's what played out in the vote last night. >> we talk so much about momentum, but you look at the exit polling in south carolina. 44% say they decided just
6:07 am
yesterday to vote for gingrich. does that kind of momentum likely follow him into florida? >> yeah, i call it political climate change. i think there's no question that it goes into florida as there's a sorting out here of the race. romney has to think about a response. gingrich has to think about how he continues to unite conserve ties in a state like florida which is, perhaps, more conservative than people give it credit for. and go to the contests after that. and electability being so important. romney has done well in iowa and new hampshire, but last night in south carolina, it was gingrich who scored big on that all-important factor, who can beat president obama? there's that other element, not only who can beat him, but who can take the fight to obama? i think it's gingrich in south carolina who won the battle of that. who can really bring the fight. >> looking at another exit poll, a white born-again evangelicals, 45% for mitt romney, 21 -- to romney's 21%.
6:08 am
is that surprising given the issue, the interview with gingrich's wife that came out during the week? >> well, look, i think that it was clearly not an issue in south carolina. i think that we've seen in politics that baggage in one's personal life does not necessarily translate into how people make a judgment about how they're going to vote in a race. i think that in terms of social conservatives, we knew this would be an issue for governor romney. critics within the republican party have said that romney did too much to raise expectations about south carolina, getting establishment support like the governor of the state, nicky ha nikki haley. looked like when he won iowa and new hampshire, it was going to be the front-runner going into south carolina. >> this conversation continues on "meet the press." tell us about the show this rning. >> it's exciting. we'll have the man of the hour, newt gingrich will join me this morning. we'll also talk to governor chris christie, a top romney
6:09 am

6:13 am
helped lead successful lives. that is his legacy. >> the question has to be asked, how much of his reputation or this legacy you talk about might be tainted because of the recent penn state sex abuse scandal? >> well, i think that when it's all said and done, and we look back, that will be very dim as a part of his legacy. i think right at the tail end, which was a bad time for it to happen. but when it comes to remembering joe paterno, i mean, he is synonymous with penn state and penn state football and that university. his generosity, his loyalty to that university over the years. that is what will be remembered. >> doug flutie, thank you so much for joining us. once again, here's lester. >> jenna, thanks. to italy where the death toll is up to 12 in the cruise ship accident. we're on the island of giglio with the latest. duncan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lester. you know, the costa concordia is so close and yet for more than a
