very foggy golden gate bridge on this friday, yes, i said friday, january 27th, "today in the bay." >> good friday morning to you. thanks for joining us at 6:00 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning everyone. i'm jon kelley. we say good morning to meteorologist christina loren to talk about a nice day. >> it's going to be a gorgeous day. the fog we have out there right now, it will not last. once the sun comes out at about 7:22 we'll see that fog burn off very quickly. 44 degrees in fremont, 50 in san mateo. a mild start. we're going to see plenty of mid to upper 60s. i'll take you through the forecast, tell you when the rain comes back and more importantly what you can expect as you sleep in tomorrow morning. let's get to you work first so you can enjoy the weekend.

>> sleep. let's look at the roads, wake up, folks, you have to deal with this. the bay bridge toll plaza. you can't see where the volume starts to come off of the east shore freeway, not even off of the 880 overcrossing. dense fog advisory but sunol, you'll have clearing. we see the lights starting to glow. that may change as you head into fremont with the volume starting to build. low ter speeds, i'll show you what else is going on. this could be an issue. >> thank you, mike. 6:01. police need help finding a man they think is responsible for a rash of burglaries in the south bay neighborhood. police are looking for jose torres, they think he is responsible for at least seven home burglaries between mid december and early january in the area of san ramon drive. witnesses saw torres in the area at the time of some of the burglaries. a fingerprint lifted from one of the crime scenes was matched to

him. >> police investigating berkeley's first homicide of the year, it happened last night on shattuck avenue. police found a man shot several times near an apartment building. police do not think it was a random shooting and they are canvassing the neighborhood talking to people for possible leads. no suspect description is yet available. >> two burglary suspects who caused a deadly accident running from police now face murder charges, the men are expected in court this morning. police say the men were fleeing from offers on january 18 when they slammed into a car at 80 miles per hour. the man in the car died at the scene a. third burglary died at the hospital. charges of murder, dlaer and possession of stolen property. >> breaking news out of san jose state university. police are searching for a man who broke into a dorm room and sexually assaulted a victim. stephanie chuang is live with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon.

the latest we heard is that police announced they are here at joe west hall on the campus, this is tenth street where the man reportedly broke in. >> we lost the signal there with stephanie. we'll hope to check back in. can you hear us now? >> reporter: i can. >> we have her back. go ahead. >> reporter: great. so what i was saying at last check university police still looking at joe west hall, looking at the dorm right now where before 5:00 this morning apparently a man broke into the dorm and the report is that he groped a student. >> we're still having trouble with the transmission. we'll try to check back with her on that right now happening at san jose state university. >> right now a man accused of abusing his ex-girlfriend's daughter will be sentenced later

today. george rodriguez pleading guilty to charges of child endangerment and inflicting injury on a child. last year rodriguez abused his ex-girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter, then rolled her up in a carpet and left her in a garage. his 15-year-old son found the girl. >> it's 6:04. the death toll continues to rise in iraq after a deadly attack. we're now learning how much survivors of the cruise ship will get paid. marla tellez joins with a look at some of the international headlines. >> good morning. we're learning more about who died in the latest violence in baghdad. officials say at least 32 people have been killed and a suicide car bombing blast. turns out half of the victims are police officers who were guarding the nearby funeral procession. for the injured, that number stands at 65. today's blast had separate

attacks that killed 13. so far almost 200 people have been killed in iraq by suspected insignatures since the first of the year. survivors of the cruise ship off the coast of italy know how much they will get paid. the company is offering $14,640 to each passenger aboard "costa concordia." that money is to compensate them for lost baggage. the company says it will reimburse the full cost of the cruise, travel and medical expenses. about 3200 survived, 16 died. in spain bad news on the jobs pront front. the latest unemployment figures show the rate has climbed to a historic 22.5%. more than 5 million are out of work in spain. the unemployment rate there has been above 20% since 2010.

certainly makes our 8.5% unemployment rate in the states seem not so bad. >> it's all relative. thank you very much. total of $38,000 missing from milpitas high. police think a school employee is behind the theft. this morning she is behind bars. police arresting 60-year-old may loretta gardena. the districted told police in september a large amount of money was missing from a bank. she had access to the safe and information on the district's accounting practices. the missing money was all set for the sister prom. the high built insurance will be covering all of the costs. >> tomorrow vallejo remembers a all then police officer. the event to honor jim is a 20-mile walk.

placing steel on the walls to connectit to the east bay part of a $1.3 billion safety program. the program so far is about 85% complete. >> 6:07. time to check in with meteorologist christina loren over in the nbc bay area weather center. looks like it's going to be a great day. >> it's going to be a gorgeous day. contrary to what we're seeing right now we've got pick fog. it's not going to last. i'm forecasting mostly clear by about 9:00 a.m. f. you are waking up and getting ready you might not have to drive through the fog. temperatures are nice and comfortable. 49 degrees in oakland at 53 and san francisco, 49 in san jose and 48 in gilroy. low clouds will make way to a lot of sunshine by mid morning. the marine layer back out in the

pacific. that means windy conditions so the east bay hills watch for gusts in excess of 25 miles per hour. we say nice and mild all weekend long, and today if you want to get out, walk the dog, feel free. next week. 60 by the bay as you break for lunch. 4:00, 64 inland, comfortable conditions especially inland. we'll see 70s on the temperature map. and we'll talk about when the rain returns, that is also on my seven-day forecast. let's get to you work on time with mike inouye. >> right on time for the slowing, highway 4 kicks in for antioch. the commute direction around eighth street it kicks off, actually hillcrest to somersville. this sensor. concord holding up for 680. across the benicia bridge and

across the -- both of those have fog advisories as do the richmond, the san mateo and the bay bridge, down the peninsula also patches of thick fog. 101 and 280 between the city and 92 in san mateo no major issues. highway 1. >> it's 6:10. surf may soon be up in the famous mavericks competition. there was a high surf warning with swells up to 50 feet. getting close. the contest director says a little too soon to say whether marvics is a go because of the heavy fog making the conditions unsafe. the competition can happen between now and the end of march. surfers get the 24 hour notice. >> the city will honor area pro baseball player after -- cc

want to look at kurn conditions with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning. a great looking day shaping up. we have fog but it's going to clear. yesterday we had to stay with the fog. it socked in the city of san francisco pretty much all day long. that will not be the case. by about 9:00 to 11:00 we're going to see mostly clear conditions. futurecast shows you that. we stop the clock at noon and clear conditions. hard to find a cloud in the sky. an off shore flow kicks in. the storm track to the north. we'll see the jet stream start to drop off to the south giving us pretty good rain chances starting monday through thursday. i think the best chance for rain over the greater bay area will be wednesday of next week. if you don't want to wash your car wait until then. just light showers, probably a good idea to wash that car. clear at the coast, throughout the afternoon we'll see that

clearing take place. as a result warmer conditions by about 5 to 8 degrees than what we saw yesterday and tomorrow staying nice and mild. hazy sunshine, a lot of sun off the bat. a clearer sky will make way to a cold saturday morning. 69 in morgan hill. 66 degrees out in milpitas. about 67 in concord so staying comfortable even through the east bay, in the north bay getting some of the warmest temperatures, 68 today in santa rosa. the next three days work out like this. we're going to see comfortable conditions, the breeze will pick up saturday into sunday. then the jet stream starts to drop off to the south. ushering in rain chances. the best chance for areas out of the golden gate bridge wednesday into thursday. santa had rudolph, we have mike inouye. >> hopefully i don't have the red nose.

correct with it the blemish cream. the construction that was going on southbound 17 at lark, that cleared and the rest of the south bay, visibility great. for most of the areas, we do have though for the peninsula to watch for. right now a note. northbound 101 oregon expressway, the on and off ramp. construction cleared on time as well as east bound. no obstructions for you. closer to the newark side patches of fog. also through san mateo at 280, 101, watch for that. lower visibility at times and through pacifica, chp warns about highway 1. spots north, had earlier start clearing. just a general note through the city and south or north through the area. we hav have a fog advisory and

bay bridge. a look at the toll plaza shows you the conditions. we can't even make out the 880 overcrossing you should see behind me. these cash lanes should have the heatering turned on in 10 minutes, probably lowering because of the limited visibility as well. >> the transit agency will talk about a proposed parking ban. the ban would prevent rvs trailers and those longer than 20 feet and taller than 7 feet from parking between midnight and 6:00 a.m. the goal is to keep people from sleeping in those overnight. it will keep the streets cleaner. opponents say it unfairly tar gets the poor. >> this is an award long overdue. a south bay marine will be honored for heroism in the korean war. denny is a veteran of the far and during the war he went back

to get a wounded comrade from the hill. he carried the marine on his shoulders until a mortar took the marine's life and denny's leg. it put him up for a silver cross and promotion. he only got a medical discharge. denny will receive an honorary proposition for charging that mill back in 1952. >> i was the man in charge of that platoon. those were my men. the guy that was left on top of the hill was one of mine. i could have sent those three guys up to get him. but that wasn't their job. it was mine. >> a man of honor and valor. mike hannah will pin danny. this is only the section time a man has received an honorary promotion. >> even the way he said that hike he could see it.

when you get on the ice for free skate which you said was the most points, how long into that are you able to go okay we got parse the big move. >> our free skate is about four minutes and we kind of are going all the way through so probably the last thirst seconds we can enjoy what we're doing. we enjoy every second but it's kind of nice to relax and say okay we did our jobs. >> congratulations to both of you. i might so find ice for my ankle. >> go to skate san jose 2012. we've got our gold -- i'm not going to fall. you want me to. >> no, we're applauding every effort. >> the seniors -- i'm looking for my pair. where is my photographer. the seniors start competing this

you cannot see in this shot. the reason look at the shot from treasure island. our photographer is showing you the roadway. i don't know if we can get that. the fog might have rolled in. we cannot. we're trying to. tough visibility. there. the s curve. folks are well spaced. that's what they want. fog advisory for pretty much every other bridge. lower the speeds, until that burns off. >> 6:32. we have breaking news to tell you about with out of san jose state university. police are right now searching for a man who broke into a dorm room and sexually assaulted a student. stephanie chuang is live there right now with all of the updated information. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. university police right now are still searching joe west hall, this dorm here where this alleged sexual assault happened at about 5:00 this morning. the third floor is where they are concentrating where the female student reported she was groped by a man.

the description very vague. in his 20s, wearing dark clothing. that's all they have right now. he apparently broke into the dorm. students have been asked to lock their doors. before 6:00 this morning we did see paramedics with county ems and san jose fire carrying the alleged victim out on a stretcher into a waiting ambulance. we spoke with a student who also is on the third floor where this reported sexual assault happened. he woke up to the commotion in the hallway. >> i didn't really wake up during it but i woke up after and i walked out into the hall and there were police out there, a couple of cops walking around asking people questions. i didn't really hear any of it but i mean, it was alarming. >> reporter: the student said that security normally is very good here. the front doors at this dorm are locked after 10:00 every night so the question is how did this alleged attacker get in. this is also not the first time we're hearing of an attempted

and actual sexual assault. a few months ago there were several including one right here at san salvador and ninth. police did make an arrest in one of those cases back in the fall. as soon as we get updates on this case we'll keep you posted. live at san jose state. stephanie chuang, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much. 6:34 now. occupy oakland activists will be back at it this weekend, the plan to take over a vacant building and establish new headquarters. protesters will gather at noon and march to the takeover location. they haven't said which building they will occupy to try to keep the city from taking action. occupiers plan to hold a two-day party called the oakland rise up festival including speakers and music. if police try to take action they will block the airport and port of oakland and attempt to occupy city hall. >> we're just learning of developing news out of utah where a columbine-like attack may have been prevented.

marla tellez joins us live with that and other headlines. >> these details are just coming in. police in utah say they have arrested two high school seniors who had elaborate plans to set off explosives and kill people during an upcoming school assembly. the story is all unfolding in the city of rory at the local high school there. one of the boys told the police officer he was fascinated with the 1999 columbine high school shooting and he even went to denver to interview the school principal about. of course we'll continue to follow the story, bring you the lateeest. >> video from baghdad, it shows the aftermath of the overnight suicide car bombing blast that killed at least 32 people. half of those victims police officers. it happened in the middle of a funeral procession. officials say at least 65 people are hurt and so far at least 200 have been killed by suspected insurgents since the first of the year. in italy rescuers blasted

another hole into the hull of the cab sized "costa concordia" today. two weeks after the cruise ship ran aground. as the search for bodies winds down workers are preparing to pump some 500,000 gallons of fuel from the ship before it starts leaking. that process is scheduled to start tomorrow and take weeks to complete. meantime, the ship's parent company announced it will pay each survivor $14,640 for lost baggage. the company also says it will reimburse passengers the full cost of the cruise, travel and any medical expenses. right now the death toll is at 16, 19 people are still unaccounted for. laura and jon. >> thank you very much for that. alameda county leaders preparing to ask voters for a higher sales tax to pay for projects. they approved a $7.8 billion in road and transit projects that would fund that measure. among them 400 million to extend

b.a.r.t. to livermore, $2.5 billion forlogical road and street maintenance and $677 million for highway efficiency. the measure would dub tl sales tax for transportation from a half cent to a full cent. >> a new ordinance in palo alto could prohibit smoking in all public areas. the breathe california tobacco prevention group is trying to launch a public awareness campaign and hopes neighborhood groups will help city leaders. city leaders have considered potential changes to toughen the smoking ordinance. it comes fron the heels of tougher smoking ordinary najss adopted in mountain view earlier this week. >> let's check back in with meteorologist christina loren who is holding court in the nbc bay area weather center. >> good morning. we're tracking thick fog over the golden gate bridge and comfortable temperatures this morning. the thickest of the fog will likely occur before we hit 8:30 so. keep that in mind, heading out the door right now get ready to

>> welcome back everyone. we can tell you this friday keeps getting better. the weekend's here and also christina loren tells us spectacular weather. >> we want to give you something to look forward to over the weekend. we're going to get gorgeous weather. and today we have to deal with fog, that will not be the case tomorrow. offshore winds starting to pump through the bay area by mid morning that's going to clear this fog out rather quickly. forecasting mostly clear conditions over the greater bay area. by about 8:30, 9:00 this morning. let's take a look at the contrast between what we're seeing there, you can see from this live picture.

i do believe this is 880 in oakland. it's very foggy. all across the bay area. so let's take it to the maps. and show you what we're expecting temperaturewise. 43 degrees in concord, 48 in oakland and 49 in san mateo. as we head throughout the morning your temperatures aren't going to climb until we lose that cloud cover. so right about 8:30 to 9:00 we'll see that climb. temperatures, though, warmer than yesterday. looking good as high pressure sets up over the great basin it's going to move to the east, driving the winds, keeping things clear. and breezy through the east bay hills, the wind prone areas across the bay. you want to keep that in mind. high-profile vehicles later on as you make your way home from work over the bay area bridges. it works like this. mostly sunny start will make way to slight warming. temperatures wrap up by 3 to 4 degrees. saturday mild, hazy sunshine, a clear start. and temperatures today hey, not too shabby. 69 morgan hill. 66 in milpitas. about with 62 in danville.

>> i need a knee splint. >> we'll work on that. lay on the ice. you'll feel better. we have good news here. the cuts may not be as bad as first thought. oakland leaders issuing a revised budget that could spare jobs. the plan would mean 81 city employees lose their jobs. that's fewer than the initial 100 to 200 projected last week. the city was forced to make the cuts because of the state's plan to eliminate redevelopment funding. >> 6:53 now. one of the largest employers in the bay area is being accused of age discrimination. 130 former employees have been -- slapped livermore with a lawsuit. after a battle the case is going to trial. we talked to an attorney for one of the plaintiff who is says the

layoffs arclassic case of age discrimination. >> they laid off none of the higher people. the only way to save is what companies do all the time. had to let the long term workers go who were closer to retirement, who cost them more for medical and salaries are the highest and keep the younger workers. >> lab officials say age had nothing to do with the layoff process. the case is going to trial next month. >> after a string of recent violence at city bars walnut creek leaders say it's time ta crack down. the council talked about taking new measures. the city is thinking about hiring two new police officers and creating an ordinance to give the city more control over downtown bars and restaurants. leaders may also place a moratorium on alcohol licenses until there is a resolution. earlier police arrested seven people in a big time brawl. >> the "today" show minutes away right now we say good morning to ann curry with a preview.

quarterback coach tom martinez. he is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. brady says she hopeful his mentor can soon find a donor. the former coach, martinez lives in the bay area and has been working with brady since he was about 13. brady has stayed in touch with martinez throughout his nfl career and in a recent interview with nbc bay area martinez says brady still calls him for advice every few weeks. >> cool. we wish him well. the heart of wine country could have a moratorium on new wineyard products. the commissioner wants new regulations for vineyard projects that call for a considerable amount of tree removal. he is worried taking too many tree from hillsides will leave the area more vulnerable to slides and erosion. the wine makers say they are stunned by the development and wonder why they were not consulted. supervisors will consider the proposal on tuesday. >> 6:56. we continue to follow breaking

news at san jose state university where police say a student was sexually assaulted in a dorm room. stephanie chuang is live with an update. have they caught him zblet. >> reporter: no. last check police are still here at the joe west hall looking for this accused attacker although they seem to be wrapping things up. they left a couple of units left and some students they have seen walk out of the front doors in the last few minutes. the man accused of groping a female student in her third floor dorm room here apparently broke in to joe west hall as students were asked to lock their doors. before 6:00 this morning paramedics with the county ems and fire carried the alleged victim out on a stretcher into a waiting ambulance. meantime, we spoke with a freshman who lives on the third floor where this reported attack happened. he says he's alarmed but usually feels very safe here. >> we have p.d. like all over campus doing everything they can
