let's get a check of the forecast with rob mayeda. >> she picked a great day. >> there are bad days? >> true. the weather looking pretty good. here's a beautiful view of the bay bridge this morning. chilly in our north bay valleys, 30 degrees in napa, 32 santa rosa, 32 in fairfield. chilly in our inland valleys. not much wind right now. the offshore winds helped to clear out our skies. the radaring loos lonely this morning. no rain drops there. we have clouds that will spill in late in the weekend. a chilly start. as we head toward 11:00 and noon, san jose, upper 60s, maybe close to 70 around gilroy. unusually mild to start off the weekend. we'll let you know if this trend can continue for the rest of your weekend plans tomorrow. the full forecast in just a few minutes. >> thank you very much. this morning, a search is on for the suspect in san leandro's first homicide of the year. the victim, a 15-year-old girl.

police say she was stabbed near 1900 pacific avenue before 6:30 last night. officers are looking for 19-year-old henry leon. they say he was in a relationship of the girl and is the father of their 9-month-old baby.15-year-old was stabbed a number of times in her chest and tom ak. an officer who arrived at the scene performed cpr until paramedics arrived. in the end, the teenage girl died from her injuries. one neighbor said he heard screaming and tire screeching outside his home. >> it's very sad. she has a baby daughter and a life like that, it's not worth it. you know what i mean? she start her life and everything. >> leon is believed to be driving a dark blue 2004 cadillac escalade with black rims and california license plate number gsbe608. now, because of the relationship police believe the stabbing was not gang related. this is san leandro's first

homicide of the year. this morning, oakland police are investigating a double homicide that left a man and woman dead. police say they got a call around 9:30 of shots fired on athel avenue near third avenue. man and a woman shot. police do not have any suspects athe this time. a new turf war is under way on the peninsula. police say gangs and violence are moving into quiet neighborhoods. how police in san mateo are trying to put an end to the violence. >> in stockton i've seen it, not here. >> reporter: some people feel safe here. san mateo police shifted into a high gear after a gang-related stabbing at the shore view shopping center tuesday afternoon and a gang-related beating not far from there the week before. >> in both cases they were serious gang cases. >> reporter: police made several

arrests, recovering an ak-47 from a known san mateo gang member living in san leandro. >> that's a good example of the kind of firepower they have and what a serious matter this is in dealing with gangs not only for san mateo but throughout the county and the state. >> reporter: the violence surprises brenna garcia. >> it didn't seem like a bad area. >> reporter: on wednesday, federal agents visited another san mateo neighborhood not known for crime. they recovered methamphetamine and cocaine. in an operation called honduran highway. neighbors who didn't want to talk on camera says the house has been robbed at gunpoint before. marino says while he feels safe, kids are at risk when drugs and gangs are in the neighborhood. >> i worry about my daughter, nieces and nephews. >> reporter: intervention at school is key. >> they need to have more intervention programs and things

for kids to do when they get out of school. maybe even more necessary things that they have to do, rather than get out at 3:00 and do whatever they want. >> reporter: jean ellie, "today in the bay." the san mateo police department has a special program to help teens get out of gang life. the man accused of breaking into a san jose state dorm and groping four women is in jail this morning and we have learned he is a fellow tune. police arrested 21-year-old michael escobar yesterday on four counts of burglary. escobar is a junior at the university, majoring in sociology. police say he lives off campus about two blocks away from joe west hall. he has no previous criminal record on campus and the university says he most likely followed someone into the building and went door to door checking for unlocked doors. the first attack was reported about 3:30 yesterday morning by a female student who says she was groped while sleeping in her room. after responding to that call,

police say they found three more victims. they plan to discuss howç to improve security. san jose police released the sketch of a suspect they say is responsible for assaulting a man in a san jose parking lot two months ago. police say the suspect is a hispanic male in his mid-20s about 5'6" to 5'9", weighing about 200 pounds. they say the victim was leaving the parking lot on white road when several men approached him. one of the men reportedly assaulted the victim and called him a terrorist. the victim who is east indian descent was treated for injuries to his jaw. the search is on for a man who sexually assaulted a woman in the middle of the day, in front of witnesses it happened thursday. the woman was walking on 35th avenue near foothill boulevard. the man knocked the woman to the ground and tried to rip her clothes off. the woman was able to fight off the man. police say a lot of people witnessed the attack but no one intervened. the suspect was gone by the time

officers did respond to a 911 call. >> there's quite a bit of foot traffic and vehicle traffic in the area and this occurred right on the sidewalk. which is out in the open and a very brazen act. >> there's a $5,000 reward being offered for information leading to an arrest in this case. occupy oakland is planning to move once again. today protesters will take over a vacant building and make it their new headquarters. no word on what uld abouting protesters plan to take over. oakland police say they are ready if any trouble breaks out. today's event is set to start at noon at frank o'gala plaza. coming up, man's best friend stolen right out of the cage. the grand theft at a california pet store that was caught on video. plus, facebook could go public in just days. we'll have advice from an expert on when is the best time to buy the stock. i want a baby.

this is "today in the bay." another look out over from the embarcadero and the bay bridge this morning. sun just coming up in the bay area. promises to be a beautiful day. rob mayeda is here in five minutes with the full forecast. it's a unique case of grand theft. the item stolen is not jewels or cash. it's an expensive puppy, and it's all caught on tape. janel wang has a look at how the thieves pulled it off. >> reporter: it happened on tuesday in orange county. police say the two suspects entered the store together. >> they go inside the pet store, they go to the kennel area. >> reporter: in the surveillance video, we see them looking at the dog through the ken's window, then in order to create a distraction, the male suspect tells the employee that he's interested in a puppy and would like to see it. >> the store clerk brings that dog with the male suspect into a back room. it's a play area where they plan play with the dog, see if they like the dog. >> as soon as they walk out, the female suspects gets right to

allowed the temperatures to drop off. the offshore winds dry, clear skies, temperatures this morning in the low 30s. patchy frost kicking off the morning around places like gilroy, santa rosa, up around napa. 32 in fairfield. 42 in oakland, 47 in san francisco. not much wind right now. by the end of the weekend we'll start to see onshore winds pick back up and eventually more low clouds approaching the coast. north and east bay valleys, patchy frost this morning. but by the afternoon, highs bay area wide in the 60s, low 70s around gilroy and tomorrow, increasing clouds and a slight chance of seeing showers. air quality to kick off the weekend in moderate range and with high pressure building back in. for the better part of the seven-day forecast, we'll watch the graph to see if we get more winter days around the bay area. you notice the pollen starting to come up for cedar into the moderate range. mold spores pull back into the low category. without a lot of rain those

numbers will continue to drop off. the doppler radar live view around the bay area looks unfortunately dry. i know the weekend forecast is great for outdoor plans but we could use more rain and sierra snow. high pressure acting like a shield to our west and eventually we'll see a few high clouds drifting on in late today and then tomorrow, we'll see more clouds and maybe a slight chance of showers in the north bay. as we go hour by hour, this is jumping ahead to sunday. notice the band of clouds that comes in around 5:00 tomorrow. this will lead up to our next chance of showers and not a big one at that. coming in early monday morning, 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. perhaps for the north bay and solono county. san jose 67 tomorrow, getting down towards gilroy and salinas, 63. alameda, 65, 65 as well for

rosato jr. >> reporter: cameras pointed, a graceful scene filling the lens. >> i'm unand down this creek every day when the fish are running. >> reporter: right now the fish are running. dozen s of salmon with spawning leaping falls to lay eggs in the same creek beds they were born in three years ago. >> it's exciting. for the last few years the population looked like it was on the verge of extinction. >> reporter: the sudden appearance of the fish has everything to do with last weekend's weather. salmon prefer rain for their annual migration. the reason we're seeing so many fish at once is because we've had eight weeks of no rain. we're seeing a whole season run of fish in one week. >> reporter: todd steiner of the fish advocacy group s.p.a.w.n. says there were 500 salmon nests here ten years ago. three years ago the number plummeted to just 26. so far, he says this year's

turnout of up to 150 nests is at least promising. >> it is still really dire. we need to see better controls on development along these streams. if our children and grand children are going to get to witness this into the future. >> but there were plenty nv witnesses today, visitors walked the path of the viewing area, watching as female salmon guarded their eggs against the legions of aggressive males. >> that to me is so beautiful. they seem like wild animals that are going after the females. >> reporter: the lure of the salmon draws fred barensmeyer and his camera to the creek nearly every day. he says neighbors in the area are pulling for the salmon's comeback. >> when they come back, we know things are healthy, the creek is healthy and it really makes us feel good. >> reporter: so for now, this seasonal show includes daring leaps, violent squirmishes and

this is "today in the bay." $100 billion. that's what menlo park-based facebook could be worth when it goes public. they could file papers for its initial public offering as early as next week. an ipo at facebook could mean lots of dough for its employees. >> this is the -- >> reporter: check out this dream car, a 2012 lexus lfa. sticker price? >> this one is $388,600. >> reporter: it may be out of the price margin for most of us but if facebook goes public, the rank and file employees may be able to like and afford one. the world's largest social network may reportedly file for its ipo as soon as next week. a monumental initial public offering that could turn the average facebook employee into a millionaire.

>> it's going to be an exciting event. it's going to be an explosion of wealth. the rank and file employees, most of the employees will see a substantial amount of wealth. >> reporter: facebook's ipo would be the biggest of the year with the social network giant's value as high as $100 billion. that would top google and netscape. investment adviser jim glass cautions those who want to buy facebook stock to wait a bit. >> i never try and buy it on the first day or second day for any clients. it's always bid up higher and, of course, the price eventually settles down. >> reporter: facebook employees won't be able to cash in right away because there are restrictions and security regulations preventing them. but when they do, expect a substantial shopping spree. >> potentially allow people to purchase homes, purchase cars, appliances. it's going toic electrical down. it is goingç to bring a new-fod wealth into the valley.

what kind of oil olive is in your kitchen? the discussion is i tag place at the state capital. some local olive oil producers claim up to 75% of the extra virgin olive oil on the mark set really substandard, often mixed with lower grade or different, cheaper oil. they say deceptive manufacturers have been getting away with the practice for years. >> what consumers are being sold on most grocery store shelves is an older olive oil or a low-grade that comes from poor quality olives. and it's called extra virgin because there are no standards. >> we're not confident that spending all this time and money on making it more expensive for consumers to have this product, a product that's good for them, is going to make fewer people be able to afford it. we don't really think that's the way to go. >> by creating standards and weeding out fraudulent oils they make more room for quality olive

street. police say the victim was walking home when the suspects approached her in a black four-door car. one man got out of the car, pointed a gun at her and grand her purse. the woman was not hurt. anyone with information on the case is asked to call the san francisco police department. divers located a woman's body inside the submerged cabin of the capsized "costa concordia" today. the death toll from the cruise ship accident now stands at 17. at least 15 people, though, remain missing two weeks after the ship ran aground off the italian island of giglio. this morning, setbacks salvage operations stopped because of bad weather. choppy seas caused a salvage platform to detach and crews may not be able to start removing fuel from the ship until early next week. 800 new violations will cost pg & e $17 million in fines. the fines were issue after it was determined that the utility

failed to conduct required gas leak surveys on nearly 14 miles of its distribution system in easte a county. to receive a penalty this extreme, for being open and transparent and accountable is disappointing, they say. the citations are a result of new rules which immediately enforce state and federal gas line safety laws in the aftermath of the san bruno natural gas explosion that killed eight people and destroyed a neighborhood in 2010. three states, three different winners so far in the republican presidential race. and now, the focus is shifting to florida. it's the final weekend before florida's primary. romney, gingrich and ron paul are staying focused with voters with events around the state this weekend. rick santorum plans to host a fund-raiser tonight in washington, d.c. florida's primary is this tuesday.

president will soon be back in the bay area. this is video from the president's last visit in october. he'll be in san francisco on february 16th for a special dinner and reception. but the exact location is yet unknown. you could get the opportunity to meet the president but it will cost you. for general seating, the reception will cost you $100. the cost jumps to $1,000 for v.i.p. seats. if you want a photo with president obama himself, that will cost you $7,500. there will also be an intimate 60-person dinner at the home of nikola miner in the city. the dinner is $35,800 and will include a question and answer period with the president. in contra costa county, two parents are facing criminal charges because their children missed too many days of school. one of the children, a fifth grader missed more than half of the current school year with unexcused absences. the other, a third grader missed

this is "today in the bay." most of us are getting used to the idea of bringing our own bags to the grocery store. are you ready to bring your detergent container in for a refill? it's the latest rage in green clean. as "today in the bay's" jean ellie reports some folks in san francisco are taking the idea of reusing to the next level. >> reporter: this woman is pumped about the next phase of recycling, reusing. >> we can use this bottle over and over and over. >> cool. >> reporter: she spends her days at green 11 in san francisco, refilling empty containers with nontoxic products. >> we fill hand soaps, dish soap, cleaning products. >> reporter: the motto is refill, not landfill. >> a lot of the shampoos and things you use, you use it for a month and throw it away and buy it again.

this idea, you can bring in any container and use that old container to buy the same thing over and over again. >> reporter: customer wendy beck says buying bulk is old school but the refill hab sit new. keeping laundry detergent stocked just takes a little planning. >> they weigh it so if there's a little bit left, it's all right. >> reporter: products are sold by the ounce. in san jose if you don't bring bags you have to pay for them. alameda county and san francisco are in line to implement the same rule. supporters say it's an adjustment anyone can make. >> we're losing a lot by our overreliance on plastic products in general. i think, you know, it's really not that hard for me to take a few small steps and change my habits. >> reporter: green 11 is working to reduce its footprintç too. >> anything here that gets empty out we go back to a distribution center and refill it.

this is "today in the bay." many of you may recall the movie "the birds" was set in a california town. right now in kentucky, they are living the birds. thousands of birds have desce descended on them and birds aren't too happy with the stuff they brought. kerry sanders bravely volunteered to tell this story. >> reporter: just as the sunsets, the sky here in kentucky turns black. a plague of birds that arrived on thanksgiving and have returned here every night since. >> i was scared. i didn't know what was happening. >> reporter: ornithologists have identified the flock of several hundred thousand birds as

european starlings. at first residents say it was a simple wonder of nature. now this is not a case of angry birds, rather angry victims, because of what those birds drop. >> every day i am held hostage in my house. >> that movie with the birds. >> reporter: experts say unlike the movie, there's no reason to think this flock will attack. >> we've had no snow cover here this winter. it's been cold, below freezing only a few times. the birds probably are right here this year because of the mild weather. >> reporter: rather than just wait the birds out, darlene arms is fighting back. >> beat my hands. i was furious with them. but it didn't work. i went and got a pan and just started beating it. if it had worked they would have left. my husband said if you use the hammer on that pole it wouldç even be louder. >> reporter: but they were right back. >> they were right back. >> reporter: then you went to -- >> the cannon.
