right now on nbc bay area area news we take the a look at the aftermath of last night's occupy oakland protest and why police say they're putting the whole city at risk. also facebook is poised to go public. you might be surprised by some of the numbers coming out. the attractions on the chopping block gets a reprieve thanks to the community. the news starts right now. good evening. i'm diane dwyer. we again tonight in oakland where city officials are assessing the damage left behind by another occupy protest.

city hall was vandalized. police arrested nearly 400 people. and police now say the people of oakland, no matter where they live, are not as safe during those protests. nbc bay area's kimberly tere is in oakland to explain for us. kimberly? >> reporter: diane, oakland mayor jean kwan says sense october occupy protesters have cost the city about $5 million. of that 2 million in vandalism alone. in downtown oakland last night, an occupy demonstration turned into a clash with police as officers were arresting dozens of people who they say broke into the ymca. city officials say other protesters broke into city hall, causing major damage to children's art and other displays. two flags were also stolen, one of them reportedly burned by protesters. >> what just fight taking over a ymca? what justifies vandalizing a historic, beloved building that's a symbol of oakland's resilience and history? nothing, i think. nothing does. >> police estimate the crowd to

be 500 strong and say they made more than 400 arrests. at least three officers and two protesters were injured. police showed us some of the items one officer alone confiscated from protesters. >> knives, cutting instruments, obviously these are items that can seriously injure a person. >> reporter: they also showed us this shield police say protesters were using it as they moved toward the line of officers last night. while the demonstration was going on, police say they received more than 1700 calls for service, which they triaged and responded accordingly to. >> personnel and resources dedicated to occupy reduces to focus on public safety priorities. >> reporter: city officials and police say they are seeking stay away orders to keep occupiers who have been arrested multiple times out of oakland. at the plaza not far from where we are things ri remained

relatively cam calm. there are protesters and police there. they have more officers on hand should they need to be called. live at oakland, kimberly tere, nbc bay area. also in oakland the man wanted in connection with the stabbing death of his 15-year-old girlfriend was found dead at the port. the chronicle is reporting that 19-year-old henry leon hanged himself. the alameda county coroner's office is saying tonight that leon's death is being investigated as a suicide. he is suspected of fatally stabbing 15-year-old myrna umanzor friday night. she was his girlfriend and the mother of their 9-month-old daughter. in half moon bay police are searching for two people they say are responsible for stabbing four men last night right after a wedding. police say the stabbing happened around 11:30 in front of the idef hall on main street as the four victims were leaving a wedding reception. the men all in their 20s were taken to the hospital with serious injuries but are

expected to survive. police are only saying two attackers are both hispanic males in their early 20s. student at stanford university are on high alert tonight after reports of someone lurking in dorm shower areas. nbc bay area steph trong has the latest for us. >> reporter: it's got an little uncomfortable at one dorm on campus as students have reported this month alone someone tried to sneak a peek while they were in the shower. >> if you reach under it would be very difficult to see the person in the shower. >> reporter: this stanford sophomore is puzzled about how or why someone would slip his or her hand under a shower door and try to snap a picture of the student inside. four female students in krot ers hall have reported this to police in the past three weeks, at different parts of the day ranging from noon to midnight. in this upper class men dorm where men and women live right next to each other, almost every

shower is gender neutral. >> sometimes the girls use the boys' restroom. it's no big deal. everybody's living together, any way. >> reporter: there is a curtain inside these showers, but students say few actually use them. >> oftentimes we don't shut the curtains which we probably should. >> reporter: this isn't the first time in recent years multiple stud vents reported a peeping tomorrow on campus. according to the stanford daily news there were several similar incidents at a different dorm, granada hall in 2010. a freshman tells us you need a key to get into those bath rooms which are gender specific. as for who's behind these recent attacks, pierre antoine is positive it's a student. >> it's just a couple people messing it up for others. >> reporter: dorm safety has also become a recent issue at san jose state university. just friday police arrested a 21-year-old student a sociology major for allegedly going into the unlocked dorm rooms of four female students and groping them in the early morning hours. the message to all students is of course take every precaution

to keep yourself safe. live at stanford university, stephanie trong, nbc bay area news. $100 billion. that's what the stock market value is projected to be for facebook when it goes public. the company is expected to file papers for its initial public offering as early as this week with the ipo happening perhaps in may or june. and an ipo at facebook could mean lots of cash for its employees. jessica aguirre has the story. >> reporter: check out this dream car. a 2012 lexus lfa. sticker price? >> this one's 388,600. >> reporter: it may be out of the price margin for most of us. but if facebook goes public, the rank and file employees may be able to like and afford one. >> it's going to be an exciting event. >> reporter: a monumental initial public offering that could turn the average facebook employee into a millionaire. >> it's going to be an explosion

of wealth. the rank and file employees and most people are going to -- most of the employees are going to see a substantial amount of wealth. >> reporter: facebook employees won't be able to cash in right away because there are restrictions and security regulations preventing them. but when they do, expect a substantial shopping spree. >> potentially allow people to purchase homes, purchase cars, appliances, and it's going to trickle down. it is going to bring a new found wealth into the valley. >> reporter: that's what lexus at stephens creek is hoping for. the dealers increasing the number of cars on its lot just in case facebook goes public. >> i think it's great. it shows the american dream. you save, get in with a company, work hard, come in every day, and you're paid off in the long run for that loyalty. >> reporter: however, investment adviser jim glass cautions those who want to buy facebook stock to wait a bit. >> i never try and buy it on the first day or the second day for

any clients. it's always bid up higher. and of course the price eventually settles down. >> if facebook does reach the $100 billion value at the ipo and raise about 10 billion for the company it will go down as the fourth largest ipo ever trailing own visa, general motors and at&t wireless. that number for facebook, by the way, would also be five times that of google's ipo. still ahead on nbc bay area news, with the gop florida primary drawing near, one candidate has to step away from the campaign trail. we'll explain that. also a south bay community comes together to save one of their hidden jems amid a downed economy. >> a house in berkeley could give new meaning to living in a mobile home. you'll be surprised what materials were used to construct this home right here. and in the nbc bay area weather center. picture perfect weekend. we've got the doppler radar fired up seeing some rain on the north coast that will be

with just two days to go untilled florida primary, the polls show gop frontrunner mitt romney increasing his lead over newt gingrich leading now by 15 points. but two familiar and controversial republicans came out this weekend for newt gingrich. nbc's peter alexander has the latest. >> reporter: with strong poll numbers showing him in the driver's seat, mitt romney didn't let off the gas at the largest rally of his entire campaign, taking another swipe at newt gingrich. >> he's now finding excuses everywhere he can. he's on tv this morning going from station to station kplaening about what he thinks

were the reasons he's had difficulty here in florida. but you know, we've got a president who has a lot of excuses. and the excuses are over. it's time to produce. >> reporter: this morning, gingrich once again challenged romney's honesty. >> this is a smart man. you point out he was well coached. he came into the debate prepared to say things that are false. >> reporter: later calling himself a legitimate heir to the reagan movement, gingrich toughened his stance. attacking romney as a liberal. >> i think we'll be very, very clear and increasingly clear over the next few weeks this party is not going for nominate somebody who is a pro abortion, pro gun control, pro tax increase liberal. >> reporter: gingrich's confrontation with the republican establishment got a boost from sarah palin this weekend who called on voters to defiantly play the role of spoiler. and herman cain who fired up the tea party with his 9-9-9 tax proposal endorsed gingrich saturday night. >> speaker gingrich is not afraid of bold ideas.

and i also know that speaker gingrich is running for president and going through this sausage grinder. i know what this sausage grinder is all about. >> reporter: after campaigning this weekend in maine, ron paul today argued he's the best candidate to represent frustrated voters. >> how somebody like newt gingrich who's been in politics all the years and an insider and claims that he's leading the tea party movement, that's to me a little strange. >> reporter: this morning, the romney campaign touted the endorsement of the state's largest newspaper "the miami herald" mr. gingrich might be the feistier candidate, but if republicans care about electability in november mr. romney is the better choice." rick santorum's oldest daughter left her father's place while he left to be with his daughter bella who was hospitalized this weekend. >> he'll be back as soon as he

can. right now family comes first. he's being a dad and husband right now. >> reporter: peter alexander, nbc news, new york. timmicly the republican presidential nominee is decided well before california's june 5th primary. but it turns out california conservatives might just have an influence this year after all. a former gop strategist told the mercury news that in one scenario newt gingrich and mitt romney could keep pace with each other long enough for california to weigh in. in another and entirely new candidate could enter the race, meaning the nomination will come down to the final primaries perhaps. california has 172 delegates, and if they're spread out among several candidates that number could impact the nomination. in all, about 2200 delegates with up for grabs and a candidate eventually needs a majority to clinch the nomination at the national convention. and that is in august. and so the group of south bay parents came together to save what they say is a community treasure. and building a home one car at a time, the berkeley constructions project giving what many

california's largest skate park is in san jose. and it was saved from closure thanks to some community help. lake cunningham regional skate park would have been left as awn staffed free for all, privatized or even padlocked had it not been for the parents fundraising. the 68,000 square foot maze of a park was built in 2008 mostly with city funds. but last summer's budget crisis left just enough money to keep the park open until september. since then parents have raised enough funds to keep it open until the end of the year. the skate park draws 40,000 visitors every year. there are many different ways to build a home. but one couple has set the creative bar very high. friends of theirs call it deep green. nbc bay area's tracey grant shows us how a home built using

recycled auto parts and shipping containers. check it out. >> it's salvaged car roofs. that's what that is right there. with the paint on and everything. that's the color of whatever car was in the junk yard. >> reporter: 104 roofs from cars make up the aluminum siding of this two-bedroom home. the front and back awnings are even more unusual. >> above that is dodge caravan side windows. >> reporter: look closely. you can almost picture the minivans these windows came from. kate and her husband have taken green architect to another level. >> on our own project here we decided to put some of the ideas we've been working with over the years a little farther than perhaps we could do on our clients. >> reporter: the city of berkeley prides itself on its recycling efforts. the couple says not every city would be thrilled about concrete floor containing fly ash, which is recycled from burning coal, or the walls made of popular bark which used to be considered waste in the north carolina

furniture industry. the architect' work in a studio made from a shipping container that ledger says has been around the world eight or nine times before it ended up in their backyard. >> they're not very expense i've and really really strong. they're ten times stronger than they need to be to meet the building codes. >> i really wanted to do it in a way that transformed the junk into something artistic. >> reporter: he says he ripped off some of the redwood siding off his house a few years ago and left it in a pile on the street. >> a lot of it was splintered. it's now part of the fence. they made the fence posts out of it. so anything and everything is recyclable. go green. >> reporter: in berkeley, tracey grant, nbc bay area news. >> all right. that was pretty cool. let's check in with meteorologist ron mayeda checking out the weather. a little bit of a change tomorrow, rod? >> we're going to see more clouds and maybe underneath som of the clouds a little bit of

mist or drizzle. in the case of the north bay possibly a few showers. show you the temperatures outside right now. not a bad finish to your sunday evening. as you can see we're in the 40s and 50s odd. 55 in san francisco where by the way the onshore winds are starting to pick back up. that's going to pump in more low clouds and moisture into the air. with the cloud coming in on top of the marine layer which will start to sweep into the inner bay we should see more mild temperatures, not those low 30s we've seen over the last couple of mornings. so tomorrow morning we'll have mostly cloudy skies. chance of showers around the north bay and maybe a few sprinkles around the rest of the bay area for your monday morning commute. for the next two days thanks to a stronger sea breeze temperatures will be cooling off a little bit. air quality improving tomorrow with the sea breeze coming back and slight chance of a few sprinkles there throughout the bay area. air quality not looking so bad. but the radar still looks kind of lonely outside. we have to head up to the north coast to find the rain.

good around eureka. but northern sonoma county will see probably a few showers out of this while the rest of the bay area looks at more clouds spilling in for your for your morning. we do have the jet stream dropping a little bit further to the south over the next couple of days. this will bring us a mixed bag of clouds between today through about tuesday. we'll see cooling temperatures, drizzle likely along the coast over the next two days. showers staying off to the north. we're talking north of the north bay. temperatures coming down a little bit for the first half of the week. starting thursday high pressure is going to build in and strongly at that. we'll see offshore winds picking up that should bring our temperatures maybe into the 70s by friday. so the dry pattern is resetting itself as we approach next weekend. temperatures climbing up for the second half of the week. hour-by-hour with your forecast you saw a little bit of afternoon clearing tomorrow. towards the evening more low clouds and coastal drizzle again. as we show you the numerical models to give you an idea of how much rain we're expecting,

you see here maybe a drizzle storm because that is not a lot. .02 inch of rain. for the bay area not a lot of snow. you can see it clearly there in the futurecast for snowfall. temperatures tonight in the 40s thanks to the cloud cover. so the overnight temperatures not quite as cold. daytime temperatures, though, will be cooling down just a little bit for tomorrow. 62 degrees in san jose for tomorrow. also low 60s around the trivalley. 50s into the inner bay, san francisco to san rafael and 62 degrees in santa rosa. we will see more clouds now through about wednesday. a few sprinkles here and there. the second half of the week look at the temperatures towards thursday and friday. we'll see those numbers climbing i think by friday trivalley and areas south of san jose could get to the mid 70s by the time we get close to the start of next weekend. by next sunday as everyone's watching the super bowl here on nbc, maybe some north bay showers again. a very dry seven-day forecast

it's almost here. we are just one week away from the super bowl which airs right here on nbc bay area. as the teams make their way to indianapolis you might not know that this super bowl is making history as well. jay gray has a look at what is different this year than ever before. >> the game may be a week away, but party has already started in indianapolis. >> this is the biggest thing the city's ever been on. >> reporter: so far things seem to be, well, zipping right along. 00-foot zip line is just within of the unique attractionss in this year's super bowl village which also includes 550,000 square feet of football fun in the nfl experience. >> it's better than what we expected. there's a lot more stuff to do here, not just for the adults

but for the kiddos as well. >> reporter: it's the first time the big game has been played in the midwest. >> three hours from chicago, three hours from lexington. not that big of a deal to come in and enjoy the weekend. >> reporter: this weekend, thousands have. >> i've never been anywhere close to the super bowl. so it's really cool that it's here. >> reporter: it's fun and games for more than 150,000 fans expected in indianapolis. but there are a couple of groups coming to town for work next weekend. the patriots left new england after a rowdy sendoff it afternoon. >> we're going down there. we're going down there for one reason. we're going to give it our best. and hopefully we have a lot more people at our party next weekend. >> reporter: the giants will make the trip tomorrow. >> feels great. i mean, it's hard to find all the right words to describe it. this is the culmination of a lot of people's careers. when you get a chance to get to a super bowl you have to enjoy

it. >> reporter: a good time that's already started a week before kickoff. jay gray, nbc news. >> that zip line was pretty cool. the u.s. figure skating championships crowned its men's champion today. you saw it right here on nbc bay area. jeremy abbott proved he's able to compete with the best in the world. he won his third title with the highest score ever recorded at the championships. he also landed the only qaudruple jump of the day. are we going to get to see it? i don't know if this is it or not. that is it. i think that was it. the championship was held in san jose at the hp pavilion. looking pretty good out there. that would have been a nice way to spend the day but it was so nice outside, rob, it was kind of hard to go inside with the sun out there. >> indoors it was almost 70 in san jose today. >> all right. thanks for watching this special edition of nbc bay area news. we have "30 rock" coming up next then more local news on the bay area at 11:00. we'll have a special report on why 40 somethings should be
