drizzle. we see from this live picture, san jose, a pretty clear start here. we'll let you know when visibility really starts to drop off. it is mild out there. you don't need that heavy jacket. by noon today warming up into the 50s and then we'll see 60s later on. we've got a big-time warm-up for super bowl weekend. we'll talk about that first. first let's check your drive at 6:01 with mike inouye. on macarthur boulevard approaching adams street just off 580, this accidewater main may affect your commute. there is water on the road basically and has a lane or two flooded. repair work continues but no full closure. macarthur is open at the scene. 880 near the area will see glowing lights as we take our coliseum camera. there is mist and drizzle in the air. water even kicking up so watch those conditions. can be very slippery especially

off-ramps. facebook's widely anticipated initial public offering filing is expected to happen today. it could pay off in a big way, not just for mark zuckerberg and facebook employees but for the entire golden state. bob redell is live at facebook headquarters in menlo park with more. >> reporter: good morning. typically with ipos, this highly anticipated and popular, most of the shares are going to be going initially to institutional investors with just a small chunk for the every day investor but there could be a surprise in today's filing. there's speculation that mark zumerberg, the ceo of facebook, could put in a provision there that would allow the 800 facebook users to get in on the action. details on that are not available. again this is speculation but that could mean that you at home might be able to get in on the bottom level price. what is that bottom level price going to be? it could take several months before we know what the final

price for the ipo is but at least one expert expected it to be over $100 per share. facebook's ipo is expected to raise up to $10 billion for the company. that would be the sixth largest initial public offering ever. six times greater than google's and the social media giant would be valued somewhere around $100 billion. that's greater than disney or general motors. now today's expected ipo filing is significant because it will shed light on something that facebook has kept private, namely its financials. the filing will give the public a sense of how well the company has been doing and an idea of what its prospects are for future growth. reporting live here outside facebook headquarters in menlo park, bob redell, "today in the bay." while facebook employees should be gaining a lot of wealth, california may be running out of cash. state controller john chung is telling lawmakers the state could be out of money next month. he says it needs $3.3 billion

from march and first two weeks of april. chung says the cash shortfall can be managed by delaying some payments but if something is not done soon, ious and tax refund delays could be coming. layoff notices go out today to 80 oakland city employees. the city is short $28 million in its budget. city leaders managed to save funding for children's fairyland, the oakland zoo an other community services. eventually some 200 city workers will lose their jobs through layoffs and reorganization. 6:04 right now. the teenager accused of strangling his adoptive parents to death and trying to burn their bodies is heading back to court today. "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live from oakland where the attorney for that boy is expected to enter a plea for his client during a hearing later today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. oakland police say that the

15-year-old has confessed to killing his parents. he's been charged with two counts of murder. he was arraigned yesterday in court but he's due back today to possibly enter a plea and to get an attorney assigned to him. this is a really horrible story. police believe he strangled his mother, susan thompson, waited for his father, robert cayman, to come home and attacked him, too, on friday. police say he put the bodies in a car and then tried to set it on fire. now there are reports that tensions were high after he was suspended from school twice. >> he was saying, my parents -- i miss them, let's go look for them. part of it was a real feeling, because i think he regrets doing it to some degree. i don't know why he did it. >> reporter: he says the couple was concerned about their son hanging out at the occupy camps

but he doesn't blame the movement for anything. police say that the boy was disturbed and trying to fit in. he is expected back in court here in oakland at 9:00 this morning. reporting live in oakland, i'm christie smith. laura and marla, back to you. 6:06 now. in los angeles, horrifying child molestation charges against a former elementary schoolteacher. 61-year-old mark barts is facing 23 counts of committing lewd acts on children at the elementary school where he worked for 30 years. police say he was photographing blindfolded students with their mouths taped shut. inside locked classrooms. the la unified school district dismissed him about a year ago but parents say they were never told why. richmond police are offering a $10,000 reward to help find a man who sexually assaulted an elderly woman saturday morning near the richmond-el cerrito border. the 81-year-old lives at a nearby assisted living home and

takes a morning walk between 5:00 and 6:00 every day. police say during her walk she was badly beaten, sexually assaulted, then left outside a big o tire shop. if you have any information about the attack you are asked to call richmond police. san francisco police in fact have made an arrest in a 1983 murder case. 43 yoor 43-year-old nicholas crumbly was found dead in san francisco in november of 1983. detectives believe the murder was sexually related after removing dna from his body and the case went unsolved for nearly 30 years. investigators reopened that case which led them to 47-year-old william payne when dna taken from the victim's body matched the dna profile of payne. william payne was arrested on monday and charged with murder. he's being held on $5 million bail. the san francisco sheriff is petitioning to get visitation

rights with his young son. a judge ordered him to not have any contact with his family until his domestic violence case is resolved. the sheriff is accused of bruisings his wife's arm during an argument on new year's eve. the sheriff has pleaded not guilty to the charges. occupy oakland protesters will enter pleas tomorrow. they are now charged with felonies, including assaulting a police officer. eight others face misdemeanor charges such as resisting arrest and vandalism. they are under court order to stay away from city hall and the plaza. the charges stem from saturday's protest in downtown oakland. demonstrators say police did not give them enough time to disperse. good morning. 6:08 now. you can expect some slick roadways as you head out to work this morning. let's check that forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning, ladies. good morning to you at home. we did have a weak disturbance pass through the bay area overnight. you can see what's left of it right now racing into the sierra nevada. sorry, skiers and snowboarders.

unfortunately we're seeing a lot more rain than snow out of this disturbance but at the end of my seven-day forecast we will show you when the wet pattern and we get more snow up in the sierra when that starts to develop. we'll talk about that coming up. right now let's talk about today. 53 in san francisco. 48 in san jose. today works out like this. because of that disturbance we have increased onshore flow so you will likely find some really heavy clouds out there this morning and areas of mist and drizzle especially at the coast. inland it doesn't look too bad at this point but we'll let you know when that changes. we are expecting dense fog to form before that sun comes out later today, then that warming trend kicks into high gear. as we head into this weekend we'll start to warm up as of tomorrow. let's help you plan that day. mostly cloudy conditions at the coast by the bay and inland. as you make your way to work at 8:00 a.m., by noon the sun is out. a few more clouds will move in as we head through the second half of your day but we'll still see enough sunshine to warm us up into the 60s by the bay and inland and pretty close at the

coast, even 59 degrees at 4:00. let's check your drive and see if the weather is impacting you this morning. it certainly will. at least in preparation. prepare for slick roadways out there. right now 880 through fremont that's not reportedly the problem but it could have played factor because this accident at the off-ramp from southbound 880 will have some flashing lights. the off-ramp is open but watch slick conditions at freeway speeds on those curving off-ramps. a four-car accident moved to the shoulder, and another accident reported there, a hit and run. now the second accident could cause slowing and distraction slowing 880 southbound heading toward 92 and the transition, that's the san mateo bridge. bridge picking up volume and clear view of that high-rise but you will see some fog developing on the peninsula and again misty conditions through there, down

good morning. welcome back. 6:13 now. mountain view's google may be a tech giant but it is relenting to one south bay neighborhood over its employee bus service. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo joins us live from los

gatos with the latest on google's shuttle bus problems. damian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. the neighbors here began seeing that google employee bus pull up here in early january but the problem is this isn't really a bus stop. they knew right away that this was going to be a problem and so they complained and looks like they got their way. the bus pulls right up to the bike lane here on shannon road to pick up google employees who are headed for work. so kids swerve having to pull their bikes into the middle of the road. they couldn't hop on to the sidewalk because that's where the google employees were lining up to board this bus. the solution came when local police asked a presbyterian church of los gatos which is right in front of the bus stop if the bus could pull into its parking lot for the pick-ups and the church said yes. >> google shared the same vision for biofuel buses, local people who are living and buying homes in our town being able to catch

a bus and get into work without taking all their cars on to los gatos roads. >> reporter: neighbors and parents actually like the idea of the bus for google employees. it gets them out of their cars and the bus runs on biodiesel fuel. now they get to pick up their employees and they say it is done safely for everyone. live in the south bay, damian trujillo, "today in the bay." it's 6:15 right now. san jose's film festival just weeks away. they had a media kickoff last night at the san jose athletic club. recognize anyone there? our own christina loren helped get that party started walking the red carpet, meeting some of the people involved in the event. nearly 200 films will be shown at this year's festival. cinefest opens on february 28 and runs through march 11. it is a really cool event. you get to see some premier

films coming through the area. >> you were cut out for the red carpet. >> did you see marla davies? she and i are proud supporters, our second consecutive year of getting to tell people how amazing this film festival is right here in the silicon valley. award winning films. we'll talk more about that as we get closer to the kickoff of cinequest but we want to get you to work this morning nice and safely. we have a pretty steady mist over the golden gate bridge. mike says the san mateo bridge is not quite as slick this morning but if you live by the water especially the immediate coast, give yourself plenty of time this morning to reach your destination safely as you'll likely be using the windshield wipers. that front was slated to bring us a little bit of rain in the north bay in particular now pushing into tahoe and kind of falling apart as we speak. it did increase that onshore flow. we stop the clock at 7:00 a.m.

our last chance for showers, one little cell here situated over the pacific. as we head throughout the day, clouds clear. by 2:00 p.m. getting a nice mix of sun and clouds and warming up yet again into the 60s. we've got really comfortable weather for you. as we head throughout the morning, we do want to be aware, it is very drezley drizzly. menlo park, a steady mist this morning. we'll warm up into the 70s inland as we head through this super bowl sunday. we've got a super-duper forecast for this weekend. we'll talk about that. today temperatures mostly in the 50s and 60s throughout the bay area, you'll see a mix of sun and clouds. san francisco today, 61 degrees. the next three days work out like this. we'll warm up to 66 by thursday. on friday, 67 degrees. then we keep on climbing saturday and sunday, super comfy for super bowl sunday. that means if you wanted to get your grill going, fire it up because we're going to see really comfortable weather.

63 degrees at the coast. talking about pacifica, half moon bay. could you even hit the beach if you aren't a football fan. by monday into tuesday the pattern changes. look at the drop-off between monday and tuesday. that's when things really start to change around here. tuesday, wednesday an thursday we actually have 30% to 40% rain chances and good chances for sierra snow. we'll delve a little deeper as we head into the morning hours. right now let's get you to work on time with mike inouye. green chicklets all throughout this map. but look what's coming, 50s capital expressway, just north of 101 for the 680 to 880 transition. looking at the build for the commute typical for the south bay. some chicklets will turn to yellow in the next 20 minutes. menlo park there is some drizzle coming down in this area. likely that's the issue. no major problems for 101 or 280 or along the peninsula. again watch the fog and drizzle

as that develops. across the dumbarton bridge and san mateo bridge, looking just fine. bay bridge metering lights were turned on just a little bit ago. we have another at winton, sounds like that's completely cleared to the shoulder and a little slowing through fremont and newark for northbound 880. no incidents reported for that area though. we also have no construction anymore for 680 and bollinger canyon road. typical time out ofality mott pass. 6:19. mitt romney's campaign will no longer pay for secret service protection as of today. a romney campaign advisor says the campaign requested the protection and the secret service agreed that romney meets the requirements for free protection. the campaign previously paid for two to three agents. all major party nominees eventually get secret service

protection but candidates can get it early if the homeland security approves the request. >> because he's a step closer to become being the actual republican nominee this morning. romney won the florida primary in a landslide with 46% of the vote. he now has three times as many delegates as newt gingrich. rick santorum and ron paul skipped florida. they campaigned out west. focus now moves to this weekend's nevada caucuses. gingrich's pac got a $10 million donation from a casino owner. five times what they had raised earlier. analysts predict the money will likely fuel more negative ads. >> the american public does not want to see two or three candidates get into a mud -- you know, a mud wrestling match where everybody walks away dirty. >> ron paul says he thinks nevada's the state where he has the best chance of winning. 6:20. coming up, a new law to keep people from spending the night in two san francisco plazas now in effect. details coming up. -dad, why are you getting that? -that's my cereal.

pg&e insists the meters are safe but has submitted a proposal to allow customers to have an analog meter if they pay an additional monthly fee. also on today's agenda, pg&e rate hikes for customers. a bay area assemblyman jerry hill will hold a news conference this morning to object claiming the utility is passing the cost of upgrading its natural gas pipeline system to rate payers. hill's also expected to attend cpuc president michael leavy for taking the lead role into the san bruno pipeline explosion. critics say it is a conflict of interest since the cpuc has been found partially responsible for that tragedy. 6:24. rules against camping in some san francisco plazas are now in place. the city supervisors have narrowly passed proposal to prohibit tents and other structures in harvey milk and jane warner plazas, this is in the castro district. the board stopped short of banning shopping carts saying it

unfairly targets the homeless. new this morning, drugmaker pfizer is recalling 1 million packets of birth control because they may not work. pfizer says there was a packaging error with one of ttw that could leave women with an inadequate dose of the drug which could lead to a risken accidental pregnancy. if you take the medication, start using back-up form of birth control immediately. a kitchen that's helped san francisco's poor and hungry for decades serves its last meal today. st. anthony's original dining room on jones street has been feeding the hungry home cooked meals for more than 60 years. the building is set to be demolished to make way for a new facility. an interim dining room just around the corner at 150 golden gate avenue will continue to serve the community. mayor ed lee and san francisco giants president will be on hand

>> we love having you, marla. yeah, jon's out. what is it he? sick? under the weather. hmm. jon kelley, come back. 48 degrees in oakland. 46 in livermore. we're at 53 degrees in san francisco today but we're going to see a really comfortable afternoon as we head throughout the day. those clouds will continue to clear. so if you are under the weather, we have good news for you. sunshine and warmth comes back into the mix. we're done with the showers after today and then we got a warm-up towards this weekend. let's check your drive, see if that drizzle is impacting your roads with mike. >> i can't say for sure but we have seen a cluster of incidents on 880 through the area where we have seen some mist all morning. there were no incidents but there was a report of some debris and also traffic break through the area. on the southbound we've just cleared and accident. the off-ramp again slick, watch transition roads off of the freeway. a new accident after the first

one cleared, second one reported now southbound 880 at a street. watch the slick roadways, they could be a factor for your morning commute. it is just about 6:31 now. no more speculation. facebook will file papers today announcing its ipo. the filing is considered to be the biggest thing to happen to the bay area since google ipo'd in 2004. almost ten years ago. today bob redell is live outside the menlo park headquarters with all the details for us. >> reporter: good morning, marla. facebook's initial public offering expected to raise $10 billion for that company. that would be the sixth largest ipo ever, six times greater than google's. two value the social media giant somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 billion. that's greater than disney or general motors. today's expected ipo filing is expect because it will shed light on something that facebook has kept private, namely we're

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live in oakland this morning where he may enter a plea. it looks like we -- can you hear me? >> reporter: yeah, i can. good morning to you. this is a really disturbing story. police believe the 15-year-old strangled his mother, then waited for his father to come home, then attacked him, too. the boy was in court yesterday but he's expected back a little later on this morning to be arraigned and to enter a plea and possibly get an attorney. the boy was arrested friday after robert cayman failed to show up to work. police found him and his wife susan in a car near their lake merritt home. investigators believe that the boy may have tried to set the car on fire, too. there are reports that the boy may have been upset, partially because he was suspended twice recently from school and his uncle says his brother's adopted son was troubled. >> they got him when he was 6

and he had been in foster homes and he escaped from his original parents like when he was about as young as 3 years old. >> he confessed and some of of the details we're not going to go into right now just because the investigation still continues. >> reporter: as for why he may be responsible for this, his uncle said he really can't answer that, he doesn't know. as you mentioned, he's being charged as an adult and he's due back in court here in oakland at 9:00 this morning. live in oakland, i'm christie smith. laura and marla, back to you. 6:34. we do have new information today in the death of a 14-year-old girl at a slumber party in santa rosa. investigators tell the santa rosa press democrat the girl overdosed on the date rape drug ghb. they initially thought she had died of alcohol poisoning during a sleepover in july. detectives are not sure if the girl intentionally or accidentally ingested the drug.

many of the ingredients in ghb are also contained in industrial cleaning solvents. a lawyers for her parents say the girls may have accidentally ingested cleaning solvents thinking it was vodka. also in santa rosa this morning, parents are being warned of a possible flu outbreak at two schools in santa rosa. santa rosa press democrat says a small number of students from james monroe elementary and another elementary school have become sick. their symptoms are associated with a highly contagious virus that includes stomach aches and vomiting. we will get a better idea today of just where california's water supply stands. the department of water resources will conduct a snow survey this morning. they will test the snow pack in the sierra to see how much fell in the past month. experts don't expect to see much. we are still inches below a normal january. that makes us abnormal, i suppose. huh? >> isn't that true. >> although i think we are

getting a little precipitation up there in the sierra. want to check in with meteorologist christina loren with our forecast from the weather center. >> it is precipitation in the form of rain and everybody wants that snow up in tahoe. the good news is we do have a really interesting setup as we head through next week, finally. all of the long-term models bringing in a dip in the jet stream. that means as we head to the midsection, end of next week we will start to get pretty good rain chances. they're at about 30% right now and we're still about seven days out. it all works out like this for today, that little front just bringing rainfall. at this point we'll see clearing and a lot of it, very rapidly as high pressure moves back in. we stop the clock for you at 8:00 a.m., little bit of a sell moving over marin county. it all clears out over the course of the next half-hour. all the clouds clear out by 2:00 p.m. we're headed toward a really nice day today with temperatures in the 60s for the most part. inland cities are going to stay

comfortable. we do have that drizzle especially if you're waking up with us. to the north of the golden gate bridge at the coast is where it is the worst. even inland reports of thick fog from palo alto up to menlo park and san mateo. highs today will end up in the 60s. i'll take you through that forecast for the weekend, then of course those rain chances and that sierra snow that's coming up 6:37. let's talk to mike first. we have a lot of water on the roadways but not as a result of the drizzle. we had a water main break, at least a busted water pipe going on in oakland. oakland police say they still have maybe a lane or two blocked. macarthur at adams street just off of 580. that will affect the flow of traffic but it is not closing macarthur boulevard. just prepare for a little delay through the area. volume picking up, westbound 80 through san pablo, richmond and

into berkeley, 22 minutes off of the carquinez bridge down to the toll plaza where metering lights have been turned on early this morning likely again because of the misty situation across the bridge. sunol, 680 flows nicely in the southbound direction, moving from the right to left at the bottom of your screen but a new accident just reported around castlewood as well as mist. had to use the wipers earlier this morning. likely still the case as we see those clouds. 6:38. coming up on "today in the bay," it will take at least twice as long to demolish the bay bridge as originally thought. we'll tell you why. the republican presidential race moves out west. a live report on what's next for all the campaigns coming up. for the latest news be weather, traffic, find us on facebook. we arell on at nbc bay area. al. hey guys, breakfast!

sparkly lights indicate mist in the air. that's a concern for drivers throughout the area. until that sun can dry everything out. we'll look at the east bay now. southbound 880 had a series of accidents right in the area of hayward heading down towards union city. southbound side of 880 completely cleared but that was enough to cause a disturbance, throw a wrench in the works and now we have slowing heading down past 92 to southbound 880 in the san leandro area. speeds down towards 40 toward the dublin interchange. noins dents on this side through 580, just a slower build of traffic. we do have fog that's rolling in to san mateo, that would could play a serious factor for your morning commute. those off-ramps at highway speeds coming off, you can slip and spin out.

"soul train" tv show creator show don cornelius is dead after an apparent suicide. police are at his home this morning in los angeles after reports of a shooting there. our station in l.a. reports it happened just before 4:00 this morning. the 75-year-old was a record producer. his tv music show "soul train" ran for more than 30 years. 6:49 right now. in just eight years it has grown from distraction to the world's largest social networking site. talking about facebook. and today it will file papers to raise billions of dollars in an initial public stock offering. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live at facebook headquarters in menlo park with the details. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura and marla. there's speculation that there could be a surprise in this filing, perhaps some sort of language that would make it easier for the 800 million facebook users to get in on the

initial public offering itself. typically on an ipo that's this hot, this popular, most of those shares go to institutional investors but we'll find out when this filing is revealed whether that is not the case. maybe it will be easier for the average joe. facebook's ipo is expected to raise up to $10 billion for the company n company. that would be the sixth largest ipo ever. the social dpint would be valued an an estimated $100 billion, greater than disney or gm. today the expected ipo filing will shed light on something facebook keeps private -- its financials. they'll give the public a sense of how well the company is doing and how well the prospects are for its future growth. it could take several months to set the initial price per share. at least one experts expects it to be over $100 a pop. live outside facebook headquarters here in menlo park, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> 6:50.

it is a greenishtive that has some people seeing red. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo joins us live from los gatos on google's bus trouble and a possible solution. >> reporter: good morning. it is one of those buses that picks up google employees here in the south bay. here's the problem. this is where the bus was stopping. it is actually right in the middle of a bike lane so kids riding to school had to swerve around the bus. that puts them right in the middle of shannon road which is a busy road. they couldn't go on the sidewalk because that's where employees were lining up to board that bus. we did have a problem. the issue had parents worried for several weeks. bus stop was added in early january. the bus is intended to get google employees out of their cars and into a bus that runs on biodiesel fuel. but a safety concern arose. parents started complaining to the local schools about the issue. since the bus stop is right in front of the presbyterian church here on shannon road, police

asked the church if it minded having the bus pull into their parking lot for the pick-up. and in the name of child safety, the church said yes and it seems like everyone is now happy here in los gatos. the first bus arrives at about 7:25. we will wait and see. live in the south bay, i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." 80 oakland city employees will get layoff notices today. the city was threatening to lay off many more after losing $28 million in redevelopment funds. but last night the total was drastically reduced by the city council. >> we're losing 80 pretty critical and some people are pretty upset about some of the people who were added at the last moment and we're going to see what we can do to fix that. >> we were not privy until the amendments until they were handed out. watching the meeting we weren't able to process or bring out our material or do our own study. >> laid off city workers now have at least ten days to respond. eventually some 200 will lose

law. over the weekend a ranger stopped a man walking his two small dogs off leash. things reportedly escalated when the man gave the ranger a false name and tried to walk away. witnesses say that's when the ranger pulled out a taser and fired, hitting that man in the back. >> i'm outraged about it because it's -- you know, it is a person's right to not be tazed if they're not being violent. >> a police officer needs to be trained to deal with that without using lethal force. >> the ggnra says it will take two weeks to investigate. dog lovers say it has them more determined than ever to fight that new leash law. a dozen occupy oakland protesters will enter please tomorrow. four face felonies including assaulting police officers in the wake of weekend violence. eight are facing misdemeanors and they're under court order to stay away from city hall and the plaza. the charges stem from saturday's protest in downtown oakland.
