wanted to tell folks but it has cleared. that intersection should be cleared of the activity. maybe like on the side of the roadway. but the intersection cleared. the disabled vehicle southbound 101 south of 280 but traffic has not disrupted getting out of the city. >> 5:01. a convicted murderer on death row may hold the key to a cold case and the disappearance after 9-year-old hayward girl. michaela garecht disappeared in 1988. death row inmate wesley shermantine has written a letter implicating his fellow convicted serial killer loren herzog. that spurred him to write the letter. in it he says that herzog was responsible for michaela's

abduction. he says he will lead the authorities to some of the victims. the two suspected of killing more than 20 people in the 1980s and 90s. >> the city is considering new rules that would gives more control of the downtown bars and restaurants. both sides are looking for ways to keep the peace and keep businesses open. early sunday morning officers arrested nine people after a series of brawls. police chief has announced increased patrols. >> it is official this morning, facebook going public. the tech company filed papers after markets closed yesterday, looking to raise $5 billion under the ticker name fb. in those faps it made 3.7 billion, most of that in advertising revenue. that is plenty of cash to fund

its expansion plan. bob is live at the facebook campus with what menlo park wants out of this deal. good morning, job. >> good morning, namely impro improvements to the neighborhoods on bay front expressway. the networking giant wants to add more than 7,000 employees to this campus and another one but they need permission to do that because adding that many people will impact traffic among other things. the city is allowed to ask facebook to help out their neighbors. not familiar, well, facebook headquarters is in a low income neighborhood. the council is thinking about having facebook try to beautify the area in terms of -- at least offering assistance or landscaping along the expressway. a sound wall for a park. also trying to offer assurances that local residents wouldn't be

displaced as employees gobble up properties. what's next? the city council met to come up with suggested ways that facebook could help out the surrounding community. they will sort of formalize that list, then the next meeting february 14 and some time after that will begin. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> it's 5:04. in court the man accused of a 32-year-old murder. david dixon is accused of killing rachel moncrief of han so say. honor dreef was found at a mote ert home dealership where she worked as a security guard. it showed dixon's blood on one of his pant legs. >> the south bay man accused of leading police on a violent chase will be in court.

the 27-year-old allegedly stole a car and then rammed four police cruisers trying to evat capture. all of the officers did survive. gonzalez expected to enter a plea today. and the man accused of stock piling guns and explosives, 63-year-old mark will attend a plea hearing. he was arrested after san jose police say they found several explosive devices in his home, they were then forced to dig a hole in his yard to det state the devices. >> 5 lon 05. the death toll continues to rise after a soccer game riot in egypt. marla tellez joins us. good morning. >> good morning. cnn is reporting 79 people are now confirmed dead in what officials call that country's worst case of soccer violence. one player comparing the scene

to a war. the fans, after an upset victory over one of epipt's most popular team. dozens were stabbed to death and others suffocated. this morning about 250 people are recovering from injuries and almost 50 are in police custody. the military says this is the first of three days of mourning. closer to home a u.s. counter terrorism official says the no fly lift in the states has more than doubled from 10,000 to 21 names. this is the list of terrorists banned from flying to and within america. most people on the list are from other countries, only about 500 are american. and the state of swsh a giant step closer to legalizing gay marriage. after a 90 minute debate the

state senate narrowly approved the measure. the house is expected to hat it and the governor promises to sign the bill. washington would become the seventh state to allow same-sex marriage. opponents have promised to challenge it. >> thank you very much. a san francisco school will remain closed the rest of the week because of a massive outbreak of a stomach virus. they had to close after 50 students called in sick and 90 others sent home. it's sickened students and 30 teachers. there has been extensive cleaning and the department of public health says it's okay to open. ool officials expect to threat students and staff get better. >> caltrain could decide today to raise fairs. the transit could vote following a public hearing.

>> welcome back everyone. good thursday morning. yes, it is a crisp, clear day out. to help illustrate, the san francisco palace of fine art. it's a fine shot. makes you feel good this morning. mike will talk about the traffic. it's 5:14. >> as expected results from the latest sierra snow pack not so good. the latest readings show barely a foot of snow in some places. levels only 37% of normal. farmers in the central valley are especially worried. they depend on the snow melt for crops. so far this is the third driest winter since 1946. a stark difference from last

year when we had so much. >> but we're still in the middle of winter. i'm optimistic. i'm looking 15, 20 days out at all of the computer models. people keep asking me when can we go to the sierra nevada and snowboard where it's not slushy or you have the hard ice. not comfortable when you fall. boy, do i know that. 39 in livermore. 43 in san jose. fresh packed powder on the way next week, even showers possibly up to a quarter inch of rain right here in the south bay. so we'll talk about that. for today, staying comfortable and unseasonably warm, in the 70s in some cities. the warmest across the bay. the warmest spot looks like gilroy. as we head through the next 48 hours look at the difference. this big ridge of high pressure taking that storm track way into canada. as we head throughout day, high clouds will make their way through the ridge of high

pressure, filtered sunshine at times but mostly sunny. then friday, as the ridge moves over the great basin it's going to be even warmer. we continue to climb all the way into super bowl sunday. so for today 65 in san jose. 63 in milpitas. about 63 degrees in concord. take you across the water, 64 degrees up in santa rosa so comfortable conditions. it's bitter cold out there right now so grab a jacket. here we go. the next three days work like this. we're going to climb through saturday up to 67 degrees, great options for you. you need to get outdoors that weather is going to be comfortable. any sort of outdoor activities very nice this weekend. by sunday up to 70 degrees. really comfortable grilling weather. then tuesday, wednesday, even the first part of thursday, looking rather active. this is a juicy system, subtropical moisture tap. we'll talk about that. let's talk to mike about your

drive. >> pleasant for the roadways. we have improving conditions here in san francisco as well as the earlier accident, van ness, cleared from the road and no slowing. southbound 101, disabled vehicle cleared out of 280. coming down south in toward daly city we see slowing. no incidents but i'll track that and let you know. that's in san francisco down to daly city. not a major commute at this time. the bay bridge, all traffic flow toward that and the maze moving nicely. we do have southbound 680 with construction from about rudier road but the northbound side picked up early this morning. no delays for 680 through danville into walnut creek. highway 4, early signs of slowing for antioch but no big drama yet. we'll see that change. northbound through the south bay, a smooth drive. scott mcgrew noticed that there has been a prius, you've seen it

retailers report january sales today and for once they can blame the weather. sales rise 2% versus 5% in december. the storms were hurt by the lock of cool weather. january's also a promotional month as many shoppers are cashing in gift cards. and american airlines is seeking to cut jobs. also $2 billion in costs. the company wants to terminate its pension plans which would amount to the largest pension default in u.s. history. american which filed for chapter 11 has lost 12.5 million. >> thank you. >> it is 5:19. iconic san francisco watering hole might have found the savior. they made their case before the historic preservation commission. they want the city to classify

it's getting bigger. dell has 250 workers on great america parkway in santa clara. here is video from october when they opened it up. the company will expand this summer and that will allow the company to add 600 more employees to its silicon valley hub. eventually dell expects to have 1500 workers in santa clara. sony has a new chief and on his first day on the job wednesday he had to tell the world that sony lost more than $2 billion thanks mostly to weak tv sales. this is something to keep in mind as apple considers selling its own tvs. sony had to deal with the flooding in thailand where many suppliers work f. your currency is strong it makes products more expensive. the president will call on yahoo!. oliver knox comes from french

the girl 23 years ago. herzog recently committed shermantine. shermantine also claimed that he'd lead police to several bodies. michaela's mom hope this is is not the end. >> when people say do i feel hopeful about this, my answer has to be that a lead to michaela's remains is not hopeful. not what i consider hopeful. to me i mean hope for 23 years that she would come home alive. >> reporter: michaela disappeared in '88 when she went to the store with a friend. they came out and a man grabbed her and shoved her into a car. investigators in san joaquin valley are looking into this and when they conclude their

investigation they will try and conduct their own jailhouse interview. christie smith. >> 5:32. a federal appeals court will decide if video recordings of the proposition 8 civil trial can be released to the public. a judge overseeing the case had the proceedings recorded and supporters of the ban on gay marriage want those private. the court of appeals will issue an opinion on whether the public has a right to see them. the justices have to decide whether proposition 8 is constitutional. >> facebook is filing its ipo filings. we're getting details how the company works, scott joins us in the newsroom. he has the latest insight. good morning. >> good morning. the shrks 1 is the blueprint for the company. this time yesterday this document was the most super

secret document in the girl. now you can read it all you want. among the things we learned. the on line gaming company accounts for 12% of facebook's residents. another interesting fact facebook generates less money than we thought but $3.5 billion a year, a billion of that is profit. you know what's cooler than a billion dollars? a billion dollars in pure profit. let me -- it's a warning to investors. he says facebook was not originally created to be a company. it was built to accomplish a social mission to make the world more connected. we think it's important that everyone who invests in facebook understands what this means to us. the google guys did something similar. we're doing this as a calling.

that would add problems in terms of traffic. the city is saying look, if you're going to ask traffic we want you to maybe new bike paths, landscaping along bay front, a sound wall near a nearby park. also assurances as new employees come here and they gobble up properties. this is where it stands now. the city council met this week, kind of came up with a list, they are going to formalize it and friend it and then after that start negotiations with facebook. reporting live, bob redell. >> agents like the facebook ipo. the real estate market is hot because of limited supply. prices are expected to rise.

as you head out this weekend we're going to get gorgeous weather followed by a storm. for today nice day on tap. we have good air quality. that drizzle at the coast, even inland a little mist. it was enough to purify our air quality. a stretch of weather stays. we have a possible storm ahead in that 7 day forecast. as we head out high pressure stays firmly in control. you can see this storm, still spinning in the gulf of alaska but will drop, this rinl of high pressure, reheats to the east starting on monday. this is a strong ridge. so we're going to have to wait for the rain. if you want to get out on super bowl sunday, a lot of people like to throw the ball around, mostly skier, tomorrow even warmer. let's of sunshine to start like
