first taking a live look over the bay area. you can see the shake to the camera, offshore winds clearing skies but keeping it rather cold because it's clear out there. so make sure you grab that jacket. let's of sunshine for the second half of the day. we'll track that rain coming up. let's track your drive with mike. >> we have traffic starting to build. look at san jose, 280 approaching, coming under the crossing, that's the 880/17 overcrossing. no major slowing yet. a wider look coming up. traveling through oakland, smooth here as well. same story, speeds in the 50s, the 60s. so far it's just starting. >> exactly. thank you. this morning we could be closer to knowing what happened to a hayward child who disappeared over two decades ago. a death row murderer says he knows what happened to michaela

garecht. christie smith joins us with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. michaela garecht's mom is hopeful that her daughter is out there and might come home safe and sound one day. so this news is not comforting at all that a convicted killer on death row, wrote a letter to a newspaper claiming that his partner in crime, loren herzog, may be responsible for kidnapping michaela garecht in 1988. herzog recently committed suicide. wesley shermantine said he would lead investigators to a number of bodies in san joaquin county and he said also that he believed that herzog looked like the suspect sketch in michaela's case. her mom said over the years that many people have come forward with big claims. >> right. this is not the first time that we had somebody in jail say they knew where she was buried for

that matter. we had somebody else a few years ago in indiana who said he knew where she was buried. >> reporter: hayward police say in their opinion this has never been a cold case. they have looked for michaela since she was snatched and shoved in a car. investigators are looking into the case and then hayward police say after they are done they will try and conduct their own jailhouse interview. jon and laura, back to you. >> thank you. a san francisco prep school will be closed the rest of the week because of a massive outbreak after stomach virus. st. ignatious closed after 50 students called in sick and 90 sent home. the the outbreak has sickened about 325 students and 30 teachers. the school has undergone a cleaning and the department of public health says it's okay to

open. the administration, they want to give students and staff time to get well before class on monday. >> a mother accused of tossing her child from the second story window is do in court. a judge will set bail for 24-year-old cortez. police say she barricaded herself and her son. when police arrived she allegedly dropped the boy out of a window before jumping. the toddler suffered minor injuries. >> it is 6:04. an oakland man hospitalized after a trench collapsed on top of him. we had a look at the scene last night. uncovering the man's head and arms so he could breathe as they spent three hours digging him out. firefighters say he was fixing a sewer line at the home when the trench collapsed and fell on top

of him. cal osha will look into whether he was working privately. >> walnut creek will have a private business meeting to talk about the violence downtown. the city wants more control of the bars and restaurants in the wake of late night violence. last weekend police arrested nine people after a series of brawls early sunday. the patrols starting tonight. >> facebook filed after the bell so we're getting new information about how the company works. scott is in the newsroom, he has all of the latest and is inside. >> good morning. i don't know how far you got to page 600 but this is a blueprint. this document the most super secret in the world now any one can receipt read it. among the things we learned.

going to have more soon. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, scott. that money you're referring to, improvements to the neighborhoods around the new headquarters here. the social networking giant wants to expand adding more than 7,000 employees to this campus and another nearby but they need permission from the city of menlo park because adding that many will impact traffic. in return the city says it's allowed to help out their neighbors. if you're not familiar with the headquarters in an area called bell haven. the council thinking about about ask i aski asking for help to build walkways and perhaps most important of all asking the company to offer assurances that local residents wouldn't be displaced as facebook employees

recovering from injuries today. it all happened after one of egypt's popular teams was unexpectedly defeated by the underdog home team. scores of angry fans swarmed the field and the officials say dozens of fans were stabbed to death, others crushed, and suffocated. many locals are blaming the police and military for not stepping in. it's the worst violent to hit since last year's fall of the former president. this morning officials toured the stadium that is trashed and in complete shambles. close to 50 people have been arrested. the chaos does continue. hundreds of people upset by the riot have gathered in protest of the new military rule. to be clear it hasn't even been one year since mubarak was ousted. he was taken down on february 11. >> thank you very much for the update on that. >> let's get a look at the forecast.

what are the conditions right now? checking in with meteorologist christina loren. >> it's a little crisp out there, on the cool side. good morning to you. much cooler than we have been because of that clear sky. every day this week so far waking up with a full deck of clouds. not the case this morning. temperatures are colder but with all of the sunshine off the bat we will see much warmer conditions than yesterday. this will be the warmest of the week so far. cold enough for the jacket. when it comes to clouds let's take through futurecast. 6:00 a.m. you can see not a lot. we're not going to see any clouds until late tomorrow night. a few high clouds move in. offshore flow is fully in control right now so that's going to push that cloud cover back out in the pacific. if you want to hit the beach you're going to get a lot of sunshine at the coast. as we head throughout the next 48 hours high pressure stays in control. you can see that rotation, up and around the ridge.

you can see it amplifying too. the storm track further to the north. it works out like this. we're going to see a comfortable day. you'll notice that wind picking up through the second half of the day. friday staying on the breezy side. and the warm-up continues. here we go. talk about temperatures for today in your city. 68 in morgan hill. 65 in san jose. and 64 degrees in pittsburg. 61 for san rafael, mild 64 for santa rosa. we head through the weekend, monday and tuesday things start to change. tuesday looks like a really good chance for rain over the greater bay area, possibly a quarter of an inch. we have a significant storm system on the way. i blew believe it will impact us. enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. >> highway 87, guadeloupe parkway heads up we're looking

>> an oakland man is in the hospital. we've been showing you this amazing video. he was trapped for hours in a trench. this is a look at the scene. rescuers were able to free the man's head and arms so he could breathe. he was fixing a sewer line at the home when the waums of the trench he was digging caved in. >> more about the collapse in milpitas. it appears the contractor did not have the proper permit. home builders need a state permit for any projects that are deeper than five feet. the trench that collapsed and buried the carpenter on saturday was 12 feet deep. the city and state authorities banned further building at the site until the investigation is complete. >> an appeals court will decide

if video recordings in a trial can be released. the judge had the recordings. supporters of a ban on gay marriage want them up der seal. the judge rules whether the public has the right to view this. the court has yet to decide the larger issue whether proposition 8 is constitutional. this one is a chapter in a sad story. michaela garecht disappeared back in 1988 and now a death row inmate says he knows what happened to her. christie smith is live where michaela garecht's mother met. >> a couple minutes ago i got my hands on the letter that was written by a death row inmate that makes claims about michaela garrett but doesn't name her. her mom is hoping for a miracle.

they came out and a man grabbed her and put her in a car. she wasn't been seen since. i spoke briefly with hayward please and they tell me they are going to see and head over to san quentin and try to conduct their own jailous interview. back to you. >> thank you, christie. 6:34. 12 people charged during the weekend violent occupy oakland protest are expected to ener pleas. police want the public to see surveillance video of the demonstrators breaking into city awl and burning an american flag. this showed the protesters waving that flag outside of city hall. and eventually they lit it on fire. surveillance also shows them dumping trash and throwing

park. what the city is considering help them make it a nicer place. why? they might be forced to because in exchange facebook is about to ask the city of menlo park for permission to add 7,000 more employees. more than that actually, to their location here and another one near by. if they do that's going to increase traffic. it is allowed to ask facebook to help out. in return it's considering facebook to build new bike paths. landscaping along bay front expressway. perhaps adding a sound wall for a park. and most importantly of all asking facebook to put out assurances that local residents would be displaced as these new employees gobble up props. the city sunsle came up with a suggested list. they are going to formalize

security check points again on capitol hill, i apologize. brian moore with the details. take it away, brian. help me out. >> hey, man. this is a serious business here. come on, get it together, brother. what am i talking about? oh, yeah. tsa scanners. there is a bipartisan group of senators on capitol hill proposing a study into the safety of the scanners in airports, x-ray scanners is what we're talking about. but how many of them are there? we can't tell you because the tsa won't tell us. but the senators are hoping for an independent study into how safe these are. there are, we should point out, two different types. one of them is the sort of enclosed scanners that we're talking about, x-ray back scanner scanners, the other type may be more familiar with, more of them, they are glass enclosed
