francisco. mostly clear conditions, a little breezy out there. setting up for a nice day. your forecast coming up first, mike is tracking slowdowns in the south bay for you. >> unusually slow for this time, especially on a friday. 6:00 a.m., look at the map. we don't usually see this. we have northbound routes for the most part moving nicely at the limit. as you would expect, 6:00 a.m. but northbound 101 from about alum rock up to 880 we see speeds consistently in the 40s over the last 10 to 15 minutes. i waited for this to clear, it has not. so we'll track that. i don't know if that's a pattern or if that's an anomaly. we'll sort it out. >> thanks. >> 6:01 now. we can tell you one person is in the hospital and a gunman on the loose after an overnight shooting in south san jose. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the scene. do police have a lead? >> reporter: not that we know of. good morning. one person is in the hospital as you mentioned after being shot

right there on the sidewalk here on eighth avenue. in south san jose. his shooter is still out there. what could make this case tricky for police is that there doesn't appear to be many if any witnesses, yet this did take place outside an apartment complex. people did hear the gun shots. as far as investigators know, no one saw the shooting. it was just after midnight when most are asleep. their best and likely only witness will be the victim. he is a 35-year-old man from san jose who is laid up in a hospital bed trying to recover from multiple gunshot wounds. >> just for people who are watching us who live in this neighborhood should they be worried about some person with a gun who is randomly shooting people or a sense that maybe this was between these two individuals? >> i have no idea. that's under investigation. there's somebody with a gun out there so. i don't know much more than that. >> reporter: in spite of being

shot, many times, that person is in the hospital right now remarkably expected to survive. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. we'll check back later on. san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi continuing his fight today to try and see his young son. he goes to court this morning looking to modify a judge's order that he stay away from his wife and child until charges are resolved. he goes to trial at the end of this month. today mirkarimi's attorney will ask the judge to allow the sheriff to have supervised visits with the boy. >> it's a chance to save money and their homes, major lenders, counselors and underwriters holding an event expected to attract a lot of homeowners. christie smith is live where homeowners could get help with their mortgage. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and boy, they are saying they need it. they have quite a line out here this morning at the cow palace.

some of these homeowners have been here since last night. i spoke with the first guy and he got here at 9:00 last night. they are trying to get relief on their mortgages. the doors don't even open up until 8:00 this morning but i wanted to show you video of what it looked like outside the gates, about 100 cars, people waiting, some camped out. what this is, it's put on by the neighborhood assistance corporation with big promises as the most effective home buyer's event to hit the bay area ever. saying they have big name lenders coming out, investors, they say they are offering modifications for distressed homeowners. i spoke with one man who has been here seven hours to try to save his under water home. >> i'm trying to get relief to my mortgage or restructure the mortgage, the loan, that i can stay. i'm under water. over $500,000 on a house worth

158,000. costra county. >> i asked one do people get solutions. he said often times they do. but it depends on who holds the loan. this event starts at 8:00 a.m., runs through 8:00 p.m. through monday. i asked what people should bring, he told me pay stubs, you want to bring your bank statements, of course your i.d., tax return, any hardship information you might have. and i tell you, the line is getting longer by the minute. reporting live in san francisco, back to you. >> let's hope they get some help. thank you. muni is happy to say they are back up and running following an overnight power outage that closed three lines. crews working through the night to get the k, l and m metro lines running between church and west portal stations. a -- a church street station that is, pulled down overhead lines causing this outage. >> a man accused of driving his

suv right into the muni tunnel will appear in court this morning. scott mitchell will be arraigned on multiple charges including dui. on january 19, mitchell was drunk when he drove his suv into the portal tunnel. he then drove more than a half mile in the tunnel before crashing. muni had to stop service to try to move the suv off of the tracks. >> 6:06. two cities may be forced to return federal stimulus funds. they were given the money to weatherize the homes of low income residents. oakland was granted $4 million, san francisco got $2.6 million. now they may have to give some of that back due to a lack of progress. both cities are asking for more time. >> more police officers will be back on the streets of downtown walnut creek tonight trying to curb drunken violence. it's the city's first step as the leader there is look for

ways to try and keep the streets safer late at night. there are too many bars too close together. the city and business owners met to try to look for ways to regulate bars and restaurants. last weekend nine people were arrested. >> federal courts are back to focusing on california's ban on gay marriage. yesterday the ninth circuit court of appeals ruled that video from the 2010 proposition 8 trial will remain sealed. the justices refused to release it to the judge because the judge overseeing the case had promised the tapes would not be seen outside his courtroom. this means the circuit can turn its attention to a jewelling that struck down proposition eight. >> like the san francisco 49ers. who has it better than us? nobody does. because of the weather. >> nobody does. >> meteorologist christina loren can back that up for us. she is in the weather center.

>> good morning. you know whaels, our san francisco giants back at at&t park as of tomorrow for fan fest. nobody has it better than us. this morning we're in the 30s, 40s and even a couple of low 50s in san mateo and san francisco. cold enough for a jacket but we will all touch on the 60s. it all works out like this. by noon in the 60s. inland 63 as you break for lunch. and 4:00 p.m. after you make your way home, celebrate the weekend, 65 degrees inland and about 60 by the water. okay, if you're watching the super bowl this is what we expect. they do have a roof over the stadium but hey, it is going to be interesting, everybody bundled up. 32 degrees at kickoff. 3:30 our time. mostly clear and cold. that means hey, our 70-degree forecast for sunday looking a whole lot better than everybody's watching that game.

we're happy you're starting your morning with us and that is a phenomenal shot right there, oakland, that is the port of oakland. those lights. reflecting off the water. makes you want to go out and maybe run by the shore or relamp and have coffee. i don't know how you want to spend your morning. christina says it will be beautiful. it's 6:13. >> amid clashes in egypt two americans have been abducted. marla tellez is following the story for us. she joins us now. >> good morning. we are getting word the state department is in touch with the u.s. embassy in cairo, officials working to confirm the citizenship of the two women said to be american kidnapped in egypt. the news first hit the wires overnight that two americans were abducted at gunpoint while touring the peninsula with a group. a helicopter search is now under way for these missing women. this comes as protesters and riot police in cairo have reached a truce after two days

of violence. three people have reportedly been killed today alone. dozens were hurt as police used tear gas and fired shots. the fighting stems from anger over the soccer riot that left almost 80 fans dead. the the feud between iran and israel intensify this is morning. israel is threatening to take out iran's nuclear program. on state television iran was described as a cancer and his nation will assist any that confronts israel. "the washington post" reports that leon panetta believes that there is a strong likelihood israel will launch an attack on iran this april, may or june. here in the states, we might not be feeling winter weather but colorado is. a major snowstorm is gripping much of denver. despite the gentle flurries we're showing you here, the national weather service reports snow is falling at two inches an

hour on the eastern plains. a blizzard warning is in effect. if you have plans to travel to denver check with your airline. already close to 200 flights at denver international ven about canceled. >> thank you. >> appreciate it. quite a stark contrast. all of that snow. what a couple inches per hour. >> per hour. two inches per hour. now they are getting the snow but they, too, have been extremely dry for this winter so happy there. guess what, skiers and snowboarders, a good looking system on the way for next week. in fact, three out of seven days on your seven-day outlook reporting those showers so we'll get to that. right now it's cold out there. grab your coat. wear the short sleeves underneath. in the 70s later on. it's cold because of the clear start taking the storm track to the north. that ridge of high pressure. look at this, this is a really

good looking system. you can see all of this white, the deep bands of moisture. that will start to impact us as we head through late monday into tuesday, even wednesday. and the first part of thursday. we've got a good looking pattern shaping up. off shore winds the story today. sunshine as a result of the dry northerly winds pushing all of that cloud cover from land to sea. sunshine today, tomorrow high pressure warms us up even more so. we'll see more 70s on your temperature map. 68 degrees today in san jose. 70 tomorrow, about 71 degrees on super bowl sunday. so enjoy these conditions while they last. i keep telling everybody things are going to change. fan fest, this weekend. bruce bochy and our san francisco giants back at at&t park, in addition to the giants you get to meet scott mcgrew out there with 9:00 a.m. fan fest from 10:00 to 3:00. grab your shades and wear that giants hat in support of our boys, the first official game

for spring training against the diamondbacks one month away. the 3rd of next month. through the next few days temperatures keep on climbing. there is the rain, the snow, maybe a foot in the sierra nevada. as we wake up wednesday morning looking very optimistic for that above 6,000 feet. let's check your drive with mike inouye. >> south bay continues to change. not dramatically. if 101 your commute, it cleared up. we're at 61. still the volume increases up to 880, keep that in mind. highway 87 we see the 40s and 50s up between capital and curtner. so guadeloupe that's an issue. right around 17 and heading up into cupertino. the rest of the commute, heading up the lower bay, smooth drive now. no problems. the southbound side we have seen slowing out of redwood city.

in the 40s and 50s, right around 55 but that is a note for an early indication more on the roads and the peninsula as well. across the bay, 680 an issue southbound 680 over on mission. reports of a disabled vehicle. no slowing heading to the funnel. 880 moves smooth heading to the south bay out of union city and newark. moving up toward the area of the livermore area. tri-valley, smooth drive. no problems into livermore. some slowing around the isabelle interchange and at the dublin as well. that's a typical pattern for a friday. over the maze a short time ago now over the approach to the bay bridge, a good number heading there but no major problems. the metering lights not on. it's 6:18. we have a smooth drive after that early morning problem. no problems since. back to you. >> picking up where you left off, two people are injured this

morning after that accident on the bay bridge. this happened around 4:00 this morning. the chp says a car hit a disabled suv just past the toll plaza in the westbound lane, the subsuv flipped and ended on its side. >> i came up on this car. there were no other vehicles symptomed or anything so i was obviously the first on the scene. i called 911 and i came over, the lady was in the driver's seat strapped in there and a knot on her head. i called 911 and told them. they came out pretty quick. >> scary stuff. great reaction. chp closed three lanes but reopened before 5:00. the people injured were able to walk away but they were taken to hospitals. >> 6:19 now. san francisco mayor ed lee will try legislation today designed to make the streets nicer. the $248 million road repair and

street safety bond passed in november. it will eliminate and strengthen bridges, overpasses and staircases. the money will be used to improve bicycle safety and flow on local streets. >> speaking of flowing bicycles, cyclist on the golden gate bridge will know how fast they are going. there are new digital sensors. the district tells us the "san francisco examiner" that the signs are there to allow people to track their speed. cyclists and pedestrians are sharing the walkway while bridge improvements are under way. >> officials are trying to drum up support ahead of tomorrow's cauc caucus. the latest poll shows mitt romney has a commanding lead over newt gingrich. according to the las vegas review journal, romney leads gingrich, 45% to 25%. he may get a boost from

yesterday's endorsement by donald trump who told a crowd in las vegas romney is not going to allow bad thing to continue to happen. >> a former tv star says she is now going to jump into the 2012 presidential race. that is the comedian roseanne bahr plans to run for the green party's nomination. she submitted the necessary paperwork. she is a long time supporter of the party and says democrats and republicans aren't working in the best interest of the american people at this point. the green party sects candidates in july. >> 6:21. coming up, nasa gives us another look at a planet we call home. >> and spectacular news on the job s front. -dad, why are you getting that? -that's my cereal.

they are much more conservative there, more savvy about piracy. you may recall google ruled out changes to its privacy policy, tying your behavior on properties together. what you watch on youtube is going to affect the ads you see on gmail. europe this morning demanding google stop that roll out there so the governing bodies can have more time to figure out if they are legal. >> really good news on the job front this morning, the labor department just released the january jobs number, said the nation's economy added almost a quarter million jobs in the previous month pushing the unemployment rate down to 8.3%. the head of that online locker mega upload speaking out. kim dotcom was denied bail. the united states is convinced several foreign countries to crack down and jail employees of mega upload. it shut down the company's servers, to which dotcom says

thanks for joining us. go red for women day around here. bringing awareness to heart disease. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning everyone. i'm jon kelley. time to check back in and say good morning to meteorologist christina loren about a beautiful way to wrap up a week. >> really is. we've been spoiled with this unseasonably warm weather, so go ahead and grab your jacket, leave the umbrella at home today. but i'll tell you when you'll be breaking it back out. we've got a lot of rain on the way next week. this morning 35 degrees in napa, close to the freezing mark in our outlying cities. sanl jose at 41. we're going to see a lot of sunshine so something you can peel off later on. i'll tell you when the rain moves in and your super forecast on the way. the roads are looking like with mike inouye. >> from our whirly bird, the chopper over the east shore freeway. we'll check the maps, debris for the south bay, 880 at brokaw, it's in lanes of the northbound side and no slowing approaching the area but we'll let you know because we've seen blips in the

south bay. over the east shore freeway look at that past the racetrack. the folks are getting to work. the folks training horses on the left. the folks on the commute to the bay bridge toll plaza. >> warming up the ponies. >> horse power. >> thank you very much. well, some desperate homeowners are needing help, lining up all morning long, even starting last night, to try to get help. major lenders and underwriters are in the bay area holding another event aimed at helping people keep their homes. christie smith joins us live where the crowds have been growing. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the line is getting bigger and bigger. hundreds of people out here. some of these have been here since last night. i spoke with the first guy in line and he's been here since 9:00 last night. they are distressed homeowners trying to save their home. there are counselors here, big

name lenders. they put you face-to-face and try to work out a deal where you can save maybe $100,000. this is damon. how does this work? i'm sure a lot of these people tried on their own to get modification. >> most have tried and failed. the deal is with this program we have legally binding contracts with every lender in the country that says if we can document and verify that their mortgage is unaffordable they can go as low as a 2% floor rate to get to that affordable payment and in some cases we see outstanding principle if that's necessary to get to what we consider an affordable payment. >> i know a lot of people had hopes dashed before. when people come here if they are approved are they leaving with a modification? >> 55% of the people who come will walk out with a modification. eventually that number jumps up to 80, 85% in 30 to 45 days. some don't have the proper paperwork and also some cases it depends on investor guidelines,

may not get an answer the same day. >> quickly what are the most important things to bring? >> proof of income. so if you are working, the last 30 days of pay stubs, if you are self employed the last six months of bank statements. go on line and see all of the documents they need to make their visit a success. >> great. thank you very much. this is today, starts at 8:00 and runs through monday. reporting live at the cow palace, back to you. >> great program. thank you very much. police are searching for the gunman responsible for an overnight shooting in south san jose. bob redell is live at the scene. the question has to be what's happening with this investigation? >> reporter: well, investigators are trying to find that gun man, trying to identify that suspect. this shooting took place about six, seven hours ago on the sidewalk along hayes avenue. we've got an apartment complex across the street. it took place just after midnight.

a 35-year-old man was out here. he is from san jose. for whatever reason was shot multiple times by this gun man. that man, the victim, is now in the hospital, is recovering from the gunshot wounds. remarkably in spite of being shot several times he is expected to survive. as far as witnesses go, there were people who heard the shooting but like i said, this was after midnight. people were asleep so police don't know of any one who saw the shooting. the best witness might be the man who was shot. he is in a hospital recovering from wounds. shooter still at large. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. 6:35. after living on the run for four decades a man who turned himself in for shooting a san francisco police could spend 15 years in prison. ronald is set to be sentenced for assaulting a police officer with a firearm. the crime happened in 1968 but

bridgeport jumped bail and disappeared. he turned himself in to set a positive example for his son. >> 6:35. also in court today a fairfield mother convicted of involuntary manslaughter after an apartment fire that killed four children including three of her own. she will ask for a new trial at the hearing. she and her sister were outside their apartment in april of 2010 when a fire broke out inside where their children were sleeping. candles left burning in the apartment started this fire. if james' request is rejected she could be sentenced to 20 years in prison. >> a big drug bust netted more than a million dollars of marijuana. police seized about 17 pounds and two subminnesota guns. officers fouled about 1500 pot plants worth $1.2 million.

police arrested one man at that warehouse and they are hooking for others. >> it's 6:36. looking very good for the weekend. meteorologist christina loren i guess you're talking about maybe barbecuing outside. >> what time should we come over? >> well laura, you can come over at 7:00 a.m. and help me get cooking because i don't know how. i can open a bag of chips and lay out dip. a lot of people getting ready for the super bowl. having barbecues, friends and family over. weather will accommodate. the weather story is really in the works for next week. we've got a significant pattern change. right now 50 degrees in san mateo. at 45 this morning in oakland. hour by hour, noon today, 60 degrees, at the coast and by the bay at 63 as you break for lunch. about 5 to 10 degrees above our seasonal averages.

travel onto the freeway there. no reports of lanes blocked but the flashing lights might be a distraction. 28 and 101 move nicely throughout the peninsula with no problems for the sensors. no metering lights we showed you the earlier shot. light down the east shore freeway. no metering lights. a live look with oakland and see how things are past the coliseum. northbound with the tail heights. it's 6:39. and we don't see major delays. i sound disappointed. i'm not, just a little surprised. >> it's 6:59. a fight breaks out on hold streaks. why police want to talk to the victim. >> 6:42. new developments in egypt where we're learning of abductions. we now know two of the people kidnapped were americans. marla tellez is following the story. she joins us now. >> good morning. we've learned the state department confirmed that the two women are americans. the u.s. embassy in cairo is not saying specifically where they are from but we can tell you the women were abducted in broad daylight at gunpoint.

it's 6:45 now. friday morning. time to get a look at the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> everybody fired up about the big super bowl weekend. if you will be going outdoors maybe going to a barbecue, maybe you yourself are having a barbecue, gorgeous weather on the way for us. much nicer than what they are going to see in indianapolis. the golden gate bridge, we had fog earlier, the high pressure is out there and working so hard with that offshore flow. all of that fog we had about an hour ago completely gone this morning. and temperatures are running cold because of that clear start. 50 degrees in san mateo, 38 in sunnyvale and 41 this morning in san jose. even santa cruz in the 30s at this point. grab that jacket. you want to dress in layers, peeling off the first layer by about noon as temperatures climb into the upper 50s. throughout the day today we're going to see a warming breeze. 5 to 10 degrees above average. the micro climates all warming
