the south freeways but no major problems. good morning. is time running out? an alarming new report this morning that israel could be planning to attack iran over its growing nuclear program, and it could happen in a matter of months. we are live in tel aviv. monster blizzard, a major winter storm bearing down on colorado, kansas and nebraska. this morning, schools are closed, hundreds of flights are cancelled and some areas are bracing for up to two feet of snow. and countdown to super bowl xlvi, two titans of the gridiron the new york giants and the new england patriots, ready to face off in a much anticipated rematch. it could be the most watched event in history. will the game live up to expectations?
7:01 am
will madonna deliver at halftime? and which ads will be worth the money? we're getting the party started in indianapolis today, friday, february 3rd, 2012. captions paid for by nbc-universal television welcome to a special edition of "today" on a friday morning. i'm matt lauer inside studio 1a. ann curry live in indianapolis, indiana. >> the crowd is gathered. welcome to a special edition of "today." i'm matt lauer. ann is in indianapolis, a town with a serious case of super bowl fever. good morning. >> and how, matt. i thought i'd come to see what all the fuss is about. indianapolis is known locally as nap town because it was a sleepy little city, but as you can see it's wide awake this morning.
7:02 am
we are just surrounded with hoosier hospitality. we are in pan am plaza named for the 1987 pan am games. this week it is super bowl village, a fun zone for fans near the stadium as the city gears up for the big game. coming up, we'll hear from madonna, as you mentioned, on her halftime show and also show you her little salsa at her news conference on thursday. we're also going to have -- there you go -- some first looks at the super bowl ads that are so highly anticipated. if that wasn't enough, we actually have a live concert coming up from here. gym class heroes and maroon 5's adam levine will be performing. and you can hear that the crowd likes the idea but of course, maybe the real star from here is mr. al roker. that's right. he's joining us also this morning. [ cheers and applause ] >> big cheer for him. matt, you have a lot coming up from new york.
7:03 am
>> i do, ann. thanks very much. we'll have new developments to the story we have been covering of more than a dozen girls at a school with tourette's symptoms. now a 36-year-old woman is suffering tics as well and she wants to know if it could all be related to a train derailment in that town four decades ago. we begin with escalating tensions over iran's nuclear program. according to u.s. officials, defense secretary leon panetta believes there is a strong possibility israel will attack iran in the coming months. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in tel aviv. good morning, richard. >> reporter: good morning, matt. u.s. military officials are expressing very similar concerns to us. they say that the possibility of an israeli strike on iran's nuclear program is about 50/50. some people say it's more like 70% likely and that the window of opportunity for israel to
7:04 am
strike is anywhere from now to this summer. u.s. officials don't think that they will get advanced notice. they say israel will likely carry this out if it takes place with long-range bombers and rockets, but there is still an intense debate within this country, whether just a short bombing campaign -- perhaps three or four days -- would have a real impact on the program. >> richard, one of the criteria the israelis had apparently imposed on themselves was could they create damage to the iranian nuclear program and then could they, israel, withstand the inevitable counterattack? how are they preparing for the likelihood there? >> reporter: they are worried about this. just a few minutes ago i came from an israeli home. i was interviewing people who are dusting off their bomb shelter. they were making sure they have the gas masks at the ready. they are not imminently concerned that something could happen, but with all of the reports -- and there are reports from israeli officials also saying israel can't wait
7:05 am
forever, that the military option might be necessary. so israelis are taking precautions already from now. there is a debate on how much impact it would have. some israelis say a strike on these hardened sites in iran which iran says are strictly for peaceful purposes could only set the program back a year or two and that it simply isn't worth it. that it's better to have a sabotage campaign and keep on economic pressure. >> richard, before i let you go, there's word also coming out of egypt this morning that two american tourists have been kidnapped there on a trip to sharm el-sheikh. what do you know about that? >> we have spoken to the local police chief. what happened is they were traveling, five americans in a car between st. catherine's and sharm el-sheikh, two of the most important tourist destinations in the sinai. they were apparently kidnapped by local tribes, bedouins. three of the americans were released and a tribal leader is now saying that the other two
7:06 am
are being held by one of the biggest tribes in the sinai, and it appears some negotiations are already under way. so it doesn't appear to be an al qaeda-style kidnapping but more of a tribal grievance that these americans got caught up in. >> richard, thank you very much. it's six minutes after the hour. here's ann. >> all right, matt. thanks. here at home a reminder that winter is far from over. a major blizzard is bearing down from colorado to nebraska. the weather channel's mike seidel is in englewood, colorado, with more. mike, good morning. sounds like a huge storm. >> reporter: it is. already, ann, in boulder, colorado, northwest of denver, they've had two feet of snow earlier this morning. snowing more than 2 to 2 1/2 inches an hour. on i-25, photographic traffic i slowly, 30 to 35 miles an hour. the interstates and ramps are snow covered. i think a lot of folks have
7:07 am
decided to make it a three-day weekends because of the forecast. denver public schools threw in the towel at dinnertime last night. and the other school districts followed. out at denver international airport, it's slow going, delays in and out at least two hours. but a lot of flight cancellations right now running over 450 flights out of 1700. that's a big chunk of flights out of dia. some airlines have canceled other flights until later on this afternoon. now, this snow will continue through today, tonight into tomorrow morning. it will head east along i-80 into des moines and omaha. and ann, if we get more than 14.1 inches of snow out of this storm, it will be the biggest storm on record during the month of february in denver. their biggest snows here typically fall late october, november and also in march and april. it's adding up inch by inch. ann, back to you. >> that's too seidel, try to s warm. al's been tracking the storm here in indianapolis. al, one of our colleagues told us it was 52 and sunny yesterday
7:08 am
in denver. what flipped this switch? >> well, i'll tell you, it's a big, big, vigorous storm. in fact, we've got behind the storm the snow, ahead of it, thunderstorms and tornadoes to talk about. as you can see, this is you see the tornado watch texas into oklahoma. we have tornado warnings in southern texas and parts of louisiana. let's zoom in and show the snow. you can see it's getting itself together. this is a vigorous storm going on for the next 48 hours as it pulls out of colorado and heads the central plains. it will be bringing behind it snow, blowing winds, winds of over 30 miles per hour. ahead of it, a lot of heavy rain, thunderstorms, possibility of tornadoes, damaging winds. and we're talking about damaging hail as well. snowfall amounts, anywhere from a half a foot to a foot and a half of snow. rainfall from parts of louisiana, mississippi, up into kansas. we're talking two to four inches of rain. and some of that could be heavy at times, causing some flooding. that's what's going on now.
7:09 am
let's go back to ann. >> all right, al, thank you so much. we'll get to your forecast in just a moment. right now let's go back to matt in new york. >> ann, thank you. now to the presidential race and a new apology from gop front-runner mitt romney following his controversial remark about the poor. this as he enjoys a new endorsement from donald trump. nbc's peerl's ater alexander is reno. >> reporter: the bill be of this endorsement played out like a scene from trump's reality show. there they were standing side by side, the billionaire and multimillionaire, exchanging compliments. trump said he was ultimately swayed to support romney because of his strong performance in recent debates. but it's romney's own words that have got him into trouble lately. and last night he tried to backpedal from his latest verbal fumble. >> reporter: mitt romney admits he messed up. >> i'm not concerned about the very poor.
7:10 am
>> reporter: thursday night in an interview with nevada's face to face, romney gave this explanation. >> you know when you do i don't know how many thousands of interviews, now and then you may get it wrong, and i misspoke. hi, guys! >> reporter: looking forward to tomorrow's caucuses in nevada, romney urged supporters to help him regain his momentum. >> it would be helpful if nevada would do the same thing florida did and give me a real boost. >> reporter: looking to boost his credentials with the conservative base, earlier romney accepted the endorsement of tea party favorite donald trump. >> it's my honor, real honor, and privilege to endorse mitt romney. >> reporter: the event was short, lasting barely seven minutes, but sweet for romney. >> there are some things that you just can't imagine happening in your life. this is one of them. >> mitt is tough. he's smart. he's sharp. he's not going to allow bad things to continue to happen to this country that we all love. >> reporter: there was plenty of vegas-style hype surrounding the high-stakes endorsement. several media outlets initially
7:11 am
reported based on sources in newt gingrich's campaign that trump would back the former house speaker. >> i'm just watching in amazement. >> reporter: why is it amazing? >> because some people have this knack of gathering attention. >> reporter: talking about donald trump, perhaps? >> the donald is a force of his own. >> reporter: would you like to have that force on your side? >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: trump who flirted with his own presidential run seemed unimpressed with romney last spring when he spoke to savannah on "today." >> he has not resonated, and that's why he didn't win last time. >> but you were saying you think you were a superior candidate based on the fact that you are richer than he is. >> not so much a candidate. the question was, how does he compare? i'm much richer than he is. that doesn't make me better necessarily at all. >> reporter: the endorsement of a billionaire businessman with this as his signature line -- >> you're fired. >> reporter: gave democrats new fodder to attack romney. >> they both like firing people, and they've both made millions
7:12 am
doing it. >> reporter: mitt romney is trying to get back on track here in nevada ahead of tomorrow's caucuses. this is a state where polls show him with a 20 percentage point lead, matt, at this point. it's also a state that he won four years ago. >> peter ail zander in reno for us this morning, peter, thank you very much. david gregory is moderator of "meet the press." chuck todd is nbc's political director. guys, good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> david, the tourist slogan for vegas is what happens in vegas stays in vegas. does this story stay in vegas? it is a one-day event? or does the endorsement of trump have real meaning for romney? >> well, "think talking to romney advisers, their feeling was we'd rather have people with us than against us. and trump, as you may know, gets a little bit of attention. so whether he does it now, whether he's talking about a candidate down the line, i think they'd rather that be for their side. they also think he's got a little tea party appeal, and they can help him -- that he can help them fund raise. so i don't think you're going to see mitt romney bringing him around to battleground states as
7:13 am
we move into the fall. but i think right now he gives them a little bump. >> what about the timing of this? much has been made over the fact that this happened. he stands next to a billionaire the day after he made this gaffe concerning the very poor. couldn't the romney campaign have called donn eed donald tru said look, we appreciate the endorsement. could we hold this off and do this a few weeks down the road? >> you would think. you had mitt romney saying i've been successful, but donald not quite as successful as you. i don't think that really helps with the down with the people tour over the next few weeks. but he's got to kind of work through this. they're looking at the longer game which is getting help among fund-raising. can he help them with tea party credentials which is what they need here. >> chuck, rick santorum gave a radio interview and said whatever trump does it's not for anyone else except for trump so be careful what you wish for. would you expect romney to now take this endorsement and yet carefully, subtly but immediately begin to distance himself from donald trump?
7:14 am
>> i do. in fact, the way this went down, the fact that there was really only one state that you would even be semicomfortable doing this in, and it was las vegas. you almost can sort of get away with it because it's vegas and having a showman on your side there is less weird than if you did it in ohio, frankly, or florida or someplace a little more meaningful. i will be shocked if we see mitt romney and donald trump standing together in september and october, assuming mitt romney's the nominee. >> looking at the polling coming out of nevada where the caucuses are about to be held, romney with a 20-point lead. do you see anything in the numbers or on the calendar, quite frankly, that would spell good news for gingrich right now? >> not at all. particularly in nevada, it's going to be hard. this is a place -- there's a large mormon population. romney did extremely well here before. ron paul's been well organized here. and frankly, the state's republican party is still getting used to the idea of caucusing. i think turnout's going to be a
7:15 am
question mark. nobody's quite sure what the hours are of the polling places. there's already some issues there. you have some observant high, big-time jewish activists inside the republican party. you don't want to vote during the daytime tomorrow. the big donor of newt gingrich. i think that you're not going to see a big turnout. i'll be curious to see what happens on tuesday. there's some caucuses where rick santorum could do well. and that will be interesting to see if conservatives are rallying around him in other states. >> david, back to you. this news out of washington and the defense department that u.s. officials fear israel might attack iran's nuclear facilities sooner rather than later. what's the u.s. place and the obama administration? >> backing up our ally, israel, depending on the nature of the strike. it's going to be destabilizing for the region, if not lethal for parts of israel should something like this happen and what the reverberations are both in terms of nuclear
7:16 am
proliferation but because of u.n. interest and u.s. troops in afghanistan, moving out of iraq, obviously, and almost completely out of iraq. but i think those reverberations are something the administration's going to have to keep a careful eye on. >> david and chuck, thank you very much. a programming note, newt gingrich will be one of david's guest on a special super bowl sunday edition of "meet the press." now let's head over to the news desk with natalie and the headlines. >> good morning, everyone. the head of the susan g. komen for the cure foundation is defending her decision to cut funding to planned parenthood even as several top komen officials are resigning in protest. this as criticism mounts against the cancer charity and supporters are rallying around the reproductive health organization. the latest supporter is new york city mayor michael bloomberg. he is pledging to donate $250,000 to planned parenthood out of his own pocket to make up for the funding lost in the cut. bloomberg said, quote, politics

7:22 am

7:35 am
doesn't remember when she last checked on her. that night, jeremy was working his first overnight shift as an electrician when he returned home around 4:00 a.m., lisa was gone. >> the father says his 10-month-old daughter was missing and he's not sure how long she's been gone. >> reporter: police launched a search of the area, seemingly leaving no stone unturned. questions have been raised about discrepancies in deborah and jeremy's account of the night. >> you reported the lights were turned off and you went to bed. jeremy came home at 4:00 a.m. and the lights were on. obviously whoever took the baby wouldn't turn lights on. were you wrong about that? >> when he came in the bedroom and said, all the lights are on in the house it was an exaggeration. >> reporter: kansas city police continue to investigate the disappearance but say the couple has not fully cooperated, telling nbc news deborah bradley and jeremy irwin have still not sat down to talk with detectives separately as we need.
7:36 am
it's an important step for the case to move forward and we're hopeful they will do that. the parents are hopeful some day baby lisa will come home to the family. >> my boys talk about her all the time. they ask about her. i keep telling them, we're never going to stop looking. we're going to find her. >> reporter: police have not named a suspect. they say although the quantity and quality of tips has decreased they are actively investigating. >> lilia luciano, thank you very much. there are new developments in the strange illness at a high school in upstate new york. this morning, the mystery appears to be growing. amy robach has the latest on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. as we have been reporting, more than a dozen girls at leroy high school say they have an illness with severe tics and outbursts.
7:37 am
now a 36-year-old woman says she has the same symptoms. licensed nurse practitioner marge fitzsimmons is from leroy, new york. >> it started with sudden head jerks and started the middle of october. >> reporter: she's the latest, most notably the oldest person to step forward with severe tics. >> today is a good day. >> reporter: this is a good day? >> this is an excellent day. >> reporter: what's a bad day like? >> a bad day is the days that i can no longer control the vocal tics. >> reporter: marge's symptoms are similar to those suffered by a growing number of teenage girls who attend leroy high school. >> i used to cheer every day. of i would go to art class. i used to go to two art classes every day. now i'm not in school.
7:38 am
>> i feel like people look at me and judge me. >> reporter: doctors have come to the conclusion that a psychiatric condition known as conversion disorder is to blame. >> this is a sub conscious effect that occurs in patients who may be prone to anxiety or mood disorders but this is definitely real symptoms. >> reporter: many of the girls' participates won't accept the diagnosis. neither will a team of environmentalists headed up by erin brockovich made famous by julia roberts's oscar-winning performance. many are taking soil and other samples from around the soil. they want to know if the problem could be related to a train derailment more than 40 years ago. the accident involved a large chemical spill including cyanide. >> i think what will stop the hysteria is if we can work together to come to an answer. >> reporter: erin's team has come down. these outside environmentalists testing the soil, testing the
7:39 am
