the end of this morning's newscast. so if you want to have your say, weigh in now. you can watch the super bowl later right here on nbc bay area. coverage starts at 9:00 this morning. and leads right up to the big event. kickoff set for 3:29 on the do it t. police are searching for a suspect wanted in connection with an early morning shooting that happened just before 12:30 this morning. three pesuspects shot at two bystanders. one man is in critical condition. police pursued the truck before the driver lost control and crashed. two were doubt, a third suspect got away. two officers were injured while taking will them into custody. a redwood city teacher is facing charges of abusing two 4-year-old children, students in her class. she's a 44 #-year-old woman from

millbrae. marty plan sis talked with the school leaders and they're taking the allegations very seriously. >> reporter: until last week, 44-year-old alexia bog dos taught special education. but last week they were made aware of allegations that she had physically abused two 4-year-old boy misher class. >> as soon as we removed that, we removed her and put her on administrate of it leave and brought in a substitute to teach the kids. >> she's the vice president of the redwood city school board and says the district also immediately informed child protective services and the police and on friday, police issued a warrant for the teacher's arrest. saturday morning, bogdis surrendered to police where she was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and battery on school grounds. >> we place the highest highest value on safety and we know that for parents, they trust us with their children.

and it's always upsetting to us when we hear with something like this. >> reporter: details of exactly what kind of physical abuse the boys are alleged to have suffered are not being released, but police say the teacher is accused of abusing the boys during a period of months and it was not sexual in nature. school officials say the students all require special education meaning they have learning disabilities such as autism. >> we take allegations of violence on our campuses very seriously. and which is why we immediately removed the teacher and why we will do our investigation and why we'll cooperate with the police in their investigation. and then depending on the results of that, then we'll decide what we're going to do. >> reporter: monte francis, today in the bay. bogdis turned herself in and has not yet been formally charged. the district superintendent said, "we have zero tolerance for violence of any kind at our schools. if there is verification of

actual physical abuse toward any student by any staff member, i will recommend the school board terminate that employee." what a difference a week makes. in oakland, the occupy protest was a stark contrast to last weekend. that's when hundreds of protesters tried to take over buildings in oakland, even breaking in to city hall. but last night, occupy protesters held an anti-police march and only about 800 protesters took part. they took off just after 9:00 last night, ended their protest just around 11:00. overall, it was a peaceful protest. the highway pa control is on the the lookout for a driver who struck a man on a peninsula highway and then kept driving. a 27-year-old san francisco man was walking along southbound 280 early yesterday morning when a dark blue prius hit him in daly city. the driver took off and the accident was not reported until another car hit the same man.

the chp shut down all but one lane for several hours. the chp says the driver's car is newer model prius and likely has some damage. a large natural gas scare in concord is over this morning, but around 11:00 last night, dozens of families evacuated their apartments. pg&e crews say the leak was caused by a child who was playing on top of a gas meter at that apartment building. firefighters shut off the gas and capped the leak. the fires are now happily and safely back at home. we still have more ahead. coming up, after gop frontrunner mitt romn mitt romney clinches his third victory, is newt gingrich talking about dropping out? we'll hear from him. plus the latest on the clean up of that cruise ship disaster off the italian coast. and we still want to know who you think is going to win the super bowl today. here is your sxhans to have a say. text your vote to 408-300-9222.

the salvage operation kins in italy. teams are continuing to try to remove the fuel from the cruise ship. the cruise capsized on january 13th. there are more than 500,000 gallons of fuel on board. the salvage operations could take 7 to 10 months once prepare operations are complete. more than 4200 were on board the ship when it went down. 17 people died and more than a dozearl e ilstssmig.in mitt romney gaining momentum

good morning. we're looking live from our camera on the ground in oakland. our photographer this morning is out on location this morning. let's check in with rob with the forecast. didn't look it was choppy on the water. >> somewhat in the middle this morning, but it is kind of chilly. we don't have any clouds to wake up to this morning, so we have some 30s and 40s outside, but we should see those numbers rebound buys as much as mostly 30 degrees this afternoon. we'll get a nice day away here, even as the high clouds fill in. 32 in san jose, 34 in gilroy. not much wind. a little offshore breeze.

so one more mild day before big changes arrive. this time tomorrow, a lot more clouds eventually setting us up for some tuesday rain. but today, jackets until about 9:00 and then 60s, even maybe low 70s around parts of the south bay. air quality today in the moderate range. not quite spare the air today which is one of these voluntary no burn days. air quality in the high moderate range around the bay area as you go through the afternoon. radar right now is dry. it will continue to stay that way as we go through the afternoon. but just offshore, you can see the source of the high clouds coming in making for a pretty sunset coming up. eventually this will lead to more clouds as we go through the day on monday and you can see as we roll into our future cast, mostly cloudy skies late monday, here comes the rain as we roll into monday night and tuesday. and this system should bring us more than the drizzle storm we saw last week. you can see your tuesday morning commute will see as much as maybe an inch of rain in some of the east bay hilltops out towards concord. could pick up in some of the

winner locations more than an inch of rain. most of it rolling in on tuesday and after that, skies will start to clear and the second half of the week is starting to look pretty dry. despite the high clouds coming in, i think we'll still hit mid to upper 60s around san jose. gilroy, mid-60s for the afternoon. 65 in alameda. and to the north bay, we'll see highs in the mid to upper 60s around santa rose. look for a late day sea breeze. so your three day outlook, you can see more clouds steadily true the damon late rain, monday night. tuesday will be the main event. and seven day forecast, notice what happens. once again high pressure will build in so we'll get the good rain event i think for tuesday which will clear out our skies and improve our air quality, hopefully bring snow to the sierra, but that's it.

his life long medical bills. last june in a matter of 20 minutes, would ybuchanan's lifer changed. he and another boy were digging a six foot deep tunnel in the sand when it collapsed burying buchanan for about 15 minutes cutting off his oxygen supply. >> to go from this beautiful day with this wonderful, just wonderful fun and sand and surf to have this event happen right before us was really hard on all of us it was something that you wouldn't wish on anybody. >> reporter: the teen is in a persistent vegetative state. >> he's just a different boy. he's still ryan. we know he's in there. i talk to him. he does respond to sound so we know he can hear. and i fully believe that he can actually understand what we're saying at any given time. >> reporter: buchanans has been in a rehabilitation center and his father says he will soon be

allowed to go home. but before that happened, the house needs to be modified to accommodate ryan's condition. the cost will be 400,000 to $600,000. on top of that, medical costs per month element to about $10,000. concerts like this and other fund-raisers are helping the family to cover some of those costs. kimberly tere, today in the bay. ryan's family hopes to have him home by his 18th birthday which is in june. san francisco mayor is showinged admirable sportsmanship making good on that 49ers giants bet he made a couple weeks ago with michael bloomberg. now a cable car on the pal on. street line is decked out in new york giants blue and red. by the way, had the 9ers beat the gooi answers, mayor bloomberg would have renamed 49th street 49ers street. what a bummer.

over abuse allegations this morning. bogdis surrendered to police on suspicion of child i think danger arement and battery on school grounds. she allegedly abused several boys in redwood city. the attacked happened over a period of months and was not sex all in nature. the schedule district was made aware of the allegations last wednesday. >> we place the highest highest value on safety and we know that for parents, they trust us with their children and it's always upsetting to us when we hear about something like this. >> building dis ogdis is on adm leave and we will have the store and follow all the details for you this week. you may not have seen him before, but if you attended a warriors or giants game, you probably heard him. deejay solomon died last tuesday while touring in bangkok.

a taxicab he was riding in was struck by a car when it stalled. the 34-year-old worked as an in-house deejay for both bay area i'ms. he also made his mark in san francisco's night club scene. his family is planning a public memorial. the search continues for a strong armed robber who injured a peninsula woman. the robbery was last thursday at an apartment complex in redwood city. a woman was leaving the building when the suspect struck her from behind with a piece of pvc tubing. he stole a grocery bag full of jewelry. there are few details about the suspect. he is an hispanic man standing 5'7". anyone with information is asked to call the san mateo county share rev's department. the syrian government is drawing protests in other countries. demonstrators called for freedom in the middle eastern country.

last might several protesters managed to storm the syrian embassy in us a tral i can't's capital. no one was hurt or arrested. the protests ramped up after russia and china vetoed a u.n. measure backing a plan for syrian's president to step down. in egypt, flames shot into the sky after an attack on a natural gas pipeline. masked gunmen are blamed for blowing up the terminal that supplies natural gas. it was the 12 the such attack since the beginning of the revolution which ousted mubarak. hundreds of cruise ship passengers are suffering from a flu outbreak. more than 200 got sick during an outbreak of the newuro virus. passengers say it was a horrible experience. >> it's been a nightmare. we lost two full days of our cruise. i mean, we spent thousands of

dollars for this cruise to stay in my room vomiting, diarrhea. princess cruise line says it has already disinfected and cleaned both ships. and it will finish doing that before it carries anymore passengers. the outbreak was a noro virus, not the flu. and the queen elizabeth 2 made her first visit to the city. here's a peek on board the massive 960-foot kreez liner. the ship is the new ex-luxury liner and it's currently sailing her 107 day world cruise. organizers invited news cameras on board. they were trying to show off the new ship and safety standards. we're told the passengers on board took part in a safety drill yesterday afternoon. the cruise line says it adheres to the international convention for safety at sea.

our crew constantly goes through training. they go through drills including evacuation of the ship. and one of the things as part of that convention is that a safety drill takes place within 24 hours of the ship departing. we happen to do that before the ship departs. >> in the cruise ship disaster in lit i, passengers had not yet participated in any safety drills. the cruise ship sang just three hours after leaving the first port. today bay area air quality managers are asking you pot to burn wood. they say wood smoke could become trapped near the ground causing unhealthy breathing conditions because of weather patterns. air quality managers stopped short of declaring a spare the air day would which make it illegal. instead they're just asking you to voluntarily refrain from burning wood. if our planning on celebrating during super bowl sunday in the city, you will be joined by police. they'll be out in force.

there will be sobriety checkpoints. it runs 8:30 through 3:00. it will also hit the streets during st. patrick's day celebrations and cinco de mayo celebrations, as well. in just a few hours, the super bowl gets started. but security is getting much tighter after recent mob scene in which several people were tra tracy pots joins us live. such a surprise to see that after everybody was talking about the hospitality. >> reporter: it's not so much that the crowd was rallied, they were just trying to pack so many people into such a small space.

so today looking forward as 70,000 people try to get in to this stadium, it will be a big challenge. we've seen those crowds all weekend. it was all to pawall to wall pe. human gridlock. 50,000 people crowded the super bowl village for free concerts this weekend. police had to shut down more streets to get everyone in. giants and pay the y09s fans ready for the big day. >> we're hoping for a big win by the giants. >> we're not going home without a victory. >> reporter: we spotted a few celebrities on the red carpet last night as the nfl announced its mvp and other awards. archie manning was there. >> proud of the giants and eli and i know it's going to be a great game. >> reporter: but not everyone will see it up close. >> tickets are way too much.

funding breast cancer screenings by planned parenthood. so why all the tumult and what is the fallout in larry, obviously emotional issues anytime you talk about planned parent hood. >> yeah. all the issues around it. look, this is a fast moving story. has several parts. komen, the nation's most successful fund raiser for breast cancer research, announced new funding rules that would no longer qualify planned parenthood which is receiving around $700,000 annually. but like a lot of things, there's more to the story. the real issue centers on abortion which is one services that planned parenthood provides. many komen backers are anti-abortion. nancy brinker, cohen's executive

even though we will see increasing clouds for the afternoon, the main system that will bring us the rain pulling in tropical moisture to the south that will power p pretty good rainfall totals especially around the santa cruz mountains. this is midnight monday into tuesday morning, we're starting to seat light rain cross over the peninsula and coast. tuesday morning commute, you can see the areas targeted in the par spell where we'll see some of the heavier rainfall totals. more than an inch expected. and santa cruz mountains headed down towards morgan hill, would get over an inch of rain. this will be midnight to probably tuesday afternoon before things start to wind down late on wednesday. . but the rainfall totals look pretty impressive. things are really looking dry as we go through the second half of the week. around the bay area today, no worries about rain.

we'll see gorgeous temperatures again today mid to upper 60s around san jose, another day close to 70 around santa cruz. around the east bay, we'll see increasing high clouds later on, but a nice day, mid to upper 60s. maybe a little bit of a cooling effect for the coast as the winds slowly turn on shore later on today. so your three day forecast, notice the transition, honest, the gateway back into seeing raindrops. tuesday looks breezy and rainy especially for the south bay. as we head through the middle part of the week, high pressure builds in again and we'll see those temperatures starting to climb on up. looks like like thursday we'll see highs again in the mid on upper 60s. dry again, the only other chance of showers i see possibly next weekend, but that system saturday much weak than the one we'll get this here on tuesday. soor outdoor plans today, looking pretty good. sunshine and the much needed rain tuesday morning and then drying out for the middle part of the week. well, get elected, get
