yogurt in the world. ♪ ♪ ♪ this is "the voice" ♪ daly: welcome back to the blind auditions. the thing that separates "the voice" from all the others is that we begin with the highest level of talent. jermaine: i was a background vocalist for alicia keys and i've been able to open up for her all around the world. i have a special message. hey, jermaine. it's alicia keys. i am so excited for you. it's your time to shine. we're rooting for you, baby. i just got done working with green day on their "american idiot" show on broadway. daly: whether they're touring with grammy-winning artists or gracing the broadway stage, the singers we've invited are already a cut above the rest. our next artist, chris mann, is ready to put his years of training to the test. i started studying classical music when i was 15. and then i decided to make a life out of it. i moved to nashville, tennessee, to major in opera at vanderbilt university. i would love to win "the voice" for my mom.

last year, mom had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. it was terrifying. that's the same cancer that took steve jobs' life. and i tried to pack it up to go home, but she would not hear it. it was almost like she's at home fighting for her health and for her life, and she wanted me to stay and fight for my dream. chris' mom: the last year has been rough. chris has been understandably very upset, but chris has an amazingly beautiful singing voice, and it's an amazing opportunity. and as a parent, we want all of those things to happen for our children. [ sighs ] i know that i have to sing like i've never sung before. and the song i'm singing is not easy, and i've definitely thought about that. but this is what i've been waiting for. i just hope i can grab onto that opportunity.

i've been at it for a while, and i've tried to sort of shrink my voice down to fit. but i decided for this show, i was gonna just sing like myself. christina: whoo! [ cheers and applause ] i think throughout my entire career i've pretty much spoken as being an individual. and you know what? something that really spoke to me was when you said, you know, "i try to shrink myself down "to fit into, you know a stereotype or a box or something like that." and sometimes there are voices that come along that you can't shrink down, and you have to just let it shine and let that voice just go. and tonight, you did that. [ cheers and applause ] so, it's between you, huh? me and cee lo. what would you like to do with what i do? i mean, that's -- everything. it seems like there's nothing that you can't do. ♪ this is "the voice" ♪ daly: welcome back to "the voice." our four coaches are each building teams of 12 with the strongest voices they can find. adam has pushed his button three times but has failed to win anyone over. damn it! this is his last chance tonight to score an artist for his team. will tony lucca fit the bill? tony: when i was 14, i auditioned for "the mickey mouse club" in detroit, and i got it. to this day, people still come up to me and say, "i used to watch you on 'the mickey mouse club.'" it means so much. so, you've been onstage with christina before.

crossroads. they're getting something for nothing. >> it's one of the hottest tickets in town. >> it's unethical. it's improper. >> san francisco's most powerful. >> it's a situation that simply doesn't pass the smell test. >> san francisco based attorney peter keen says free tickets for elected leaders erodes the public's trust. >> they're justifying it as they're serving a purpose by going to this game. >> the only purpose they're serving is having a good time at the game. >> here's how it works. the city of san francisco has retained seats at candlestick pack for every 49er game dating back three decades. three luction we box tickets for the mayor. 12 for the g manufacture of the rec and parks department. 11 for rec and parks commission.

ten for rec and parks. another 22 seats for board sprfrs. a total of 76 free tickets for every game. >> i think it's on the up and up. >> reporter: here's how they justify not paying. in this space the city leases all of candlestick park to 49ers except the luxury boxes and 76 seats meaning the city owns them and claims it receives nothing from the 49ers. a creative justification that avoids state laws limiting gifts to politicians. the tickets are considered free. >> how many games did you attend this year? >> i attended about three. >> reporter: city records show mayor received 15 tickets for every game giving most to local nonprofits. public records also show 7 of the 11 san francisco supervisors accepted free tickets this season and attended games. for the nfc championship game, you decided to pay for your ticket. why?

>> it just felt like the right thing to do. it was a personal decision. >> reporter: and that's an interesting contrast. instead of taking the free ride for the nfc championship game the president of the board of supervisors wrote a check and paid for his tickets. i >> i mean it just felt like the right thing to treat these tickets like a gift and reimburse the city for the tickets. >> reporter: other san francisco city supervisors see it a different way. >> i am given a stack of tickets every -- every year. >> reporter: supervisor john had no problem accepting the free ride. keeping some giving some awe way. at times you give your tickets away to friends? >> the championship game the other day i gave to my mother-in-law. those two tickets. on, she went with a friend of he hers. >> reporter: to avoid state gift laws when supervisors attend games or give the tickets to family and friends, they must

serve a city purpose. so how does supervisor abalose explain the tickets he gave to his mother-in-law? did she have a public purpose for being there? >> did she have a public purpose for being there? no. she had her personal purpose for being there. >> reporter: it smells if you will. how do you take criticism that you shouldn't be getting these tickets to give away to your mother-in-law? that could be a valid concern. >> reporter: for a perk for most powerful. for now of calls of public accountability, some are rethinking the status quo. are you saying my decision to give my mother-in-law the tickets to the nfc championship game -- >> it's not a question about my mother-in-law, per se. it's about me personally. am i going to be taking tickets

to go 49er games. i'll put an end to it myself personally. they should be ashamed themselves of doing this and they ought to stop it. if they don't, there should be an outcry based upon what you found that prevent them from doing it in the future. >> now, during our interview mayor lee tells us he wants the city attorney to review the free ticket policy. take a closer look. at the board of supervisor president said he could support a plan to end the free ticket giveaway and supervisor abalose said he'd follow president's lead. we'll follow both of them. bottom line, who has it better than them? nobody. >> is it just supervisors that get these freebies? >> coming up at 11:00 we'll follow this free ticket trail and take to the rec and park boards. the commission free tickets many of the commissioners there

bowl title putting them in an elite group of nfl franchisers like the 49ers packers and steelers. tonight expected to be the most watched television event in history. more than 111 million viewers. among the most disappointed viewers, the brady gang in san mateo where some brady's high school friends and teammates watched the big game. we bring in jean who joins us. even in defeat tom brady is a legend. he and his childhood idol yoe montana, best in bay area history. how was it tonight? >> reporter: tom brady has a lot of friends on the peninsula and they feel stressed out after watching that game. a super bowl party was all about tom brady and the patriots. high school friends call tom "tommy" around here. they say during high school brady dreamed of being a professional baseball player but ended up scoring touchdowns in the nfl.

high school friends say fame and fortune has not changed the hometown celebrity a bit. he didn't win the super bowl tonight, but they are still proud of him. >> we always knew there was something special about him. but we never knew that it would get to the level that it's at and that he's reached this crazy celebrity status he's at. we're definitely really proud of him. >> reporter: brady has not forgotten where he came from. he keeps in touch with the high school padres' football coach, sending along congratulations when they win big. and routinely making donations to the serra high school. brady will be in town n san mateo, in a couple weeks, speaking at a fund-raiser for serra high school. that event sold out in a matter of days. reporting live nbc bay area news. it's not just a patriot connection to the bay area it's all new york giants. an amazing show of determination and courage. a bay area girl's dramatic effort to cross the finish line.

>> reporter: norma sue is a 63-year-old nurse from union city in the east bay. she was on tour with a religious group called seed-faith tours. they says she were trying on the sinai psuinen peninsula was driving when they were stopped. betty told us by phone this afternoon what happened next. >> as soon as they stopped the bus, then the guys came out of the truck and the van. they have gun. demanded that three of my -- of the people in my bus has to go with them. >> reporter: seen here with some other tourists and the governor of south si in. ai after their release said she tried to befriend the kidnappers. they told her they would let them go in the government released 33 prisoners. >> i was never scared. >> they treated us as family. we want you to know that we love

this country. we love you. we are not scared. >> reporter: it seems the women kept their cool despite the fact that violence is spreading through that country with uprisings against the new military-led government there. esperanza says the kidnappers negotiated eventually with la after abo officials after about six hours and released them. both bay area women say they hope the government can improve security for tourists there but they are undaunted. >> we are more than encouraged to come back again and again. so, be assured, be assured that our prayers are with you. thank you very much and god bless you. >> esperanza told us she has led christian tours to egypt for yourselves. they're both due back home on tuesday. by the way, egyptian tourism industry lost more than $4 billion last year. raj, back to you. >> thank you. we're thankful for their homecoming on tuesday. a massive fire in vallejo is under control tonight but the warehouse, or what's left of it could smolder for days.

possibly affecting the air quality in the vallejo area. four-alarm fire started around 10 a.m. in an abandoned building on mare island and quickly grew out of control. more than 60 firefighters were called in to put out the blaze. fire leaderers say a combination of wind and warehouse's many open windows and doors helped the flames spread, sending up a plume of smoke. >> you can see, it looked like the thing was about -- got to be at least a block wide the column of smoke coming up. >> visible, a lot of different areas. when firefighters made that decision they attacked the flames only from the outside and tried to make sure the fire didn't spread to nearby buildings or vegetation. the fire chief said if there is a silver lining it was that the building was slated for demolition soon and no injuries. >> well that fire was wind-driven although we are still dryer than normal this winter. there is a change in the forecast. that's coming up.

chief meteorologist jeff rin eerie joins us with a look at the wok week. it was beautiful outside but that's about to end. >> dwemefinitely. 13 days since the last rainfall so we're extremely dry. one of the driest water seasons on record for parts of the bay area. what you'll find in advance of this next system we do have a high wind watch up for our coastal elevations alsove up io the north bay for higher elevations as well. so what we're expecting are these winds to build old of the south, 20 to 40 miles per hour monday night, also into tuesday with mid a high level cloud cover already on the increase at the current moment. now, as we zoom out, what you'll find is an area of low pressure still situated well offshore about 400 to 500 miles from reaching us. once it gets here, we are expecting some rainfall again that we have seen in two weeks' time where we could have over an inch in the north bay. lesser amounts in the east bay. still par of sanyo say down to morgan hill could see over an inch at this point. as we've been mentioning we

special ed students will make her first court appearance this week. she turned herself in this weekend. she's been a special education teacher for about six years now. police say she was arrested after complaints came in she abused two 4-year-old boys. now, investigators described the alleged misconduct as physical but not sexual. tomorrow morning the doors will reopen. a well-known private high school in san francisco is back in business after an outbreak of nor row virus. st. ignatius prep was closed since mid last week after 400 students and teachers called in sick because of stomach flu. the highly contagious virus spread through the air or by touch. school custodians have been busy for the last several days using bleach and steam to disinfect the entire building and campus. the source of the nor row virus remains a history. >> in east bay officials in alameda will be serving up regulations that food truck

vendors must follow effective tomorrow. they must either get a license or permit to conduct business on a city street or at five designated spots throughout alameda. vin doors must all pay taxes and comply with health and safety restrictions like any restaurant. the new york giants are celebrating as we speak. poort of their success can be traced here to the bay area. you might remember the story of the cross-country runner from university high school in san francisco, who crawled across the finish line. that video went viral. before today's super bowl the new york giants coaching staff used it as a lesson for their players. nbc bay area monty francis joins us in marin county. this teenager is once again in the national spotlight. i'm guessing she's a 49er fan. does she mine the giants are using her story? >> reporter: she says she's very happy about the outcome of the game and also surprised at all the attention she's getting. it was more than a year ago that

holland reynolds crawled across the finish line but those images are very hard to forget. with less than a mile to go in that race, she was leading the pack, she stumbled and collapsed a few feet from the finish line suffering from dehydration and slight hypothermia, crawled across the finish line securing the eighth state championship. she said she did it because her coach was diagnosed with als, lou gehrig's disease. now, more than a year after that race, his health continues to deteriorate but he's still coaching at university high school. we talked to both holland and her coach tonight about heir message of perseverance and how it made it to the super bowl this year and inspired the new york giants to victory. >> i never really thought of like other athletes who were like professional athletes using it for inspiration. so, that was strange. i mean when the story went national a couple years ago jim and i thought that was strange,

shows. >> to see that video of her crawling across the finish line inspiring. let's bring in chief meteorologists. >> temperature 10 to 15 degrees above average. we are still finding dry weather for the north bay, east bay and south bay. that will quickly be changing. out ahead of this storm system we're watching for this week we do have a high wind watch for monday night also into tuesday morning where winds could go as high as 40-plus miles per hour for the coastal hills, also for portions of san francisco, including the north bay at this point. so it is going to be windy and get wet. more on the timeline of that rain coming up. let's get a look at current conditions. cloud cover starting to moderate our temps. still holding yo onto an impressive 53 in san jose. for tomorrow morning it will be cool out there but not overly cold with this cloud cover increasing.

and then as we head throughout monday we'll find a system starting to near and eventually chance of showers by the late evening. this will be the first rain we have had in 13 days. so, here's this area of low pressure situated out here. you know it's really hard to believe here but finally this storm system is going to make its way to the bay area as we head throughout the next 24 to 36 hours. all the other storm systems in the past couple weeks are been heading well up into the gulf of alaska. this will start to increase those chances of rain as we head throughout tomorrow night with rain building offshore with possibly our first raindrops into 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. monday. also pushing down toward the peninsula. 5 a.m. on tuesday, that's what we will geet in on heavier pockets of rainfall, napa sonoma concord, and moderate rain in the south bay. totals right now are going to vary with this system. up into the north bay, we'll likely see over an inch at this point. you can see for parts of the peninsula over towards the east bay, it will be anywhere from a quarter to a half inch.

then for the south bay we'll look at anywhere from a half inch in san jose to possibly over an inch for morgan hill. it's all just because this area of low pressure will be sitting offshore and moving down the coastline that we'll have more of these sporadic expected rain totals. for tomorrow morning, 42 in san jose. 43 in santa cruz. 48 in san francisco. starting off dry with that cloud cover increasing in and throughout the day. our highs for our monday forecast, 66 in san jose. also 67 in loss gatos. for north bay tomorrow the wind will start to pick up first here with temperatures close to 70. 62 in pacifica and also 63 in half moon bay. your three day forecast as we continue through monday, clouds increasing. and then as we head throughout tuesday, that's the rain day starting in the morning with the wind ramping up. by wednesday a chance of a shower lingering around but we'll overall be drying out. that is the only storm system in

our seven-day forecast at this point. so for tuesday morning, that's when things tart to get going for us. that will be the worst commute of the week at this point. so, it's much needed rainfall, may slow you down a bit. we need every drop we can get. >> we'll take it. thank you. >> no problem. it could get heated this weekend when chuck reed tackles the issue of police and fire staffing. the mayor asked ibm to analyze the safety department. the report came back and found based on sanyo say's crime rate the city could consult 400 police jobs and save $60 million. the mayor says the report is about using resources most effectively. union leaders say cutting public safety is just crazy. >> it really gets down to the entire question of how much we rely on technology to forecast unpredictable political and social events and how much we have of personnel around all the time to make sure that safety

an explosive end to a missing persons case. a washington man long suspected in his wife's disappearance blew up his own home today. killing himself and his two young sons. authorities say it appears josh powell blew up his home on purpose moments after his children arrived for a supervised visit. the social worker who was there

to oversee the visit says powell took the children inside and then wouldn't let her in. that's when she noticed the smell of gas coming from the house. moments later, it blew. >> we believe he intentionally started the fire because it was scheduled visitation. the cps worker came and dropped the kids off. locked the cps worker out. fire started immediately and went very fast very hot, burned very quick. we believe there was an accelerant. >> his attorney says his client did send him an e-mail minutes before the explosion. the message read, i'm sorry, good-bye. powell was under investigation for the disappearance of his wife susan. she was last seen in december of 2009. >> not just football part of today's super bowl coverage on nbc bay area featured an exclusive interview with president obama. he says he deserves re-election despite the nation's economic troubles. mr. obama sat down with "today" show's matt lauer. >> we created the most jobs since 2005.

you have to admit it was a bitter sweet day for 49er fans. 49er fans hosted a super bowl gala trading candlestick parking lot for their own home turf. george and melanie at super bowl bash earlier today. we all go to the super bowl parties but this is unique. this is the third rail niners. they enjoyed the chili kickoff, a tv in every room including the bathroom, and a bouncy house for kids. some fans telling us it wasn't easy to celebrate the super bowl after their beloved niners came so close against today's winning team. >> basically, we've taken up the flag. regardless of who's in the super bowl we're using this as couple lags of everybody who doesn't get to go to the games with us.
