new england patriots last night at the super bowl in indianapolis right here on nbc. it was a thrilling game that was not decided until the game's very last play. nbc's mario solis has more. good morning. four years ago the giants needed a remarkable catch and a late touchdown to beat the patriots to win the super bowl. last night it was deja vu all over again or should i say deja blue. super bowl xlvi went down to the wire, giants trailing late in the fourth when eli manning hitting mario manningham. somehow some way he makes the catch and stays inbound to keep the drive alive. that sets up this. ahmad bradshaw untouched with the go-ahead score with a minute to play. giants rally once again to beat the pats in super bowl 46, 21-17. we'll have much more on the giants super bowl win ahead in sports. for now, back to you, lynn. >> thanks so much. well, mitt romney hopes to keep his winning streak alive as the republican presidential contenders move on from nevada to colorado and minnesota on

tuesday. after a big loss to romney saturday, newt gingrich says he's still charging ahead with his campaign. nbc's brian mooar joining us from washington with the latest. brian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lynn. newt gingrich pointing out this morning that romney has won fir than 100 delegates at this point. he needs 1,144 for the nomination. but romney's big win over the weekend in nevada proves something. he was able to put together a broad-based coalition of very conservative voters and pull in some very impressive numbers. he's hoping to do the same in the colorado caucuses tomorrow. gingrich, he finished second. that was better than he had hoped. ron paul disappointed to come in with just under 19% of the vote in nevada. but it was a disastrous finish for rick santorum.

he's pinning his hopes on the missouri primary. it will be a chance to go head to head with mitt romney and show the voters he's still viable. lynn. >> all right. brian mooar, thank you. well, the two-year long story of a missing mother took a horrifying twist yesterday in washington state after a powerful house explosion killed three in what authorities are saying was a deliberate act. more now from nbc's frances kuo. >> reporter: firefighters sift through the home of what remains of josh powell's estate. earlier in the day a social worker with child protective services had arrived with powell's two sons. a short time late eer, the house explode killing powell and the two young children. police say this was no accident. >> we believe it was an intentional fire. >> reporter: this is just the latest twist in twot-year long saga in the search for susan

powell, josh's missing wife. she was reported missing in 2009. her husband told detectives he'd taken their then 2 and 4-year-old sons camping. detectives could never disprove his story, and pow became a person of interest in the case. searchers combed the powell's utah neighborhood, even isolated desert areas, hoping e ining fi trace of the 28-year-old mother. her husband's family told investigators and press that susan may have run off with another man, but her family called those accusations ludicrous, saying she'd never leave her children. last september, josh powell's father steven was arrested on several charges, including voyeurism and child pornography. following that arrest, custody of the powell children, who had been living in the same house, was given to susan's parents. just days ago, a judge denied josh powell's attempt to regain custody of the children.

now a tragic end with no real answers and a community and family in mourning. frances kuo, nbc news. well, now here's a look at other stories making news today early today in america. it's hard to believe no one was seriously hurt after a small plane crashed into a montana home. three people were aboard. witnesses say the plane hit some trees before slamming into the house. the homeowner was there at the time, but everyone walked away from the crash. in wisconsin a propane explosion was captured on video. >> oh, my god! >> it happened at a propane facility near madison after a truck driver filling his tanker had a malfunction which caused a hoes hose to break loose. the blast shook the ground for miles around, but no one was injured. in california, a car dealership left the motor running on a toyota camry and then left it alone. a man walking by took full advantage making sure no one was

around before he took off with the car. police chased the man until he crashed and kept going for another block until he was captured. and, finally, proof that even black magic couldn't save the new england patriots last night. a group of witches in, where else, salem, massachusetts, tried to cast a victory spell on the team. they even had an inflatable tom brady watching over them. but in the end, only the giants had the winning spirit or spirits. and now for a look at your national weather, we turn to meteorologist todd santos. he has your weather channel forecast. good morning to you, todd. >> good morning. >> you know, these football. here in new york, they were going crazy. i know the patriots fans are intense as well. >> and beware of anyone with an inflatable tom brady. that's all i'm saying. it was very loud here in new york. that's about all that's going on. of course, it was the giants fans making all the noise, not mother nature.

an easy morning travel-wise across a good stretch of the country. just a few areas to mention in the east. onef those in south florida w a disturbance likely to produce heavy rainfall. next couple days, a 0% chance of seeing tropical rainfall. that's a good sign. in western colorado, get a look at some of the light snow going on down towards grand junction. we'll see some of that spreading east. some of the peaks upwards of 6 to 12. some -- meanwhile, this is the system a lot of us on the west coast are keeping an eye on. maybe seeing showers around the bay area. we see the winds increasing later on tonight. temperature-wise, on the milder side of things. 46 degrees in san francisco right now. by later this afternoon, you're looking at temperatures around 62. again, those clouds increasing, especially into the overnight l

plan urging syria's president to give up power. secretary of state clinton called the veto a travesty. activists say at least 30 civilians were killed by syrian forces sunday. the son of transportation secretary ray lahood is among 19 americans facing trial in an egyptian criminal court for allegedly being involved in banned activities. egypt's military rulers accuse foreign hands of being behind protests against them. meanwhile egypt's military government promising to move out ousted president mubarak to a prison hospital in an apparent bid to calm protests failed as clashings continued with police, firing tear gas at demonstrators. and england's queen elizabeth celebrates 60 years today. in a diamond jubilee message the queen said she felt deeply moved by the support shown for the anniversary. two official photographs were released to mark the occasion. and now here's an early look

at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 12,862 after rising 156 points on friday. the s&p climbed 19 points. the nasdaq rose 45. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei gained 97 points while in hong kong the hang seng added 47. the surprisingly strong jobs data on friday and a few important economic reports could keep the markets continuing their surge this week. coca-cola will report earnings this week, along with more than 60 other s&p 500 stocks including disney. and we'll hear from federal reserve chairman ben bernanke in another congressional session on tuesday. the unemployment rate falling to 8.3% is likely good for asia pushing for consumer products. there is a deadline today for state officials to sign on a landmark multi-billion-dollar

settlement on foreclosure abuses that would significantly expand its effects. >> the department of homeland security might get the power to regulate the cyber security if companies in critical industries like electricity and water. boeing is inspecting its newest plane, the 787 dreamliner, for possible repairs to the fiber composite structure of the plane. china has banned its airlines from paying charges on carbon emissions imposed by the european union which took effect last month. air france says it expects to maintain more than 80% of its flights as pilots and cabin crews start a four-day walkout today to protest a government labor reform. three political figures in greece walked out but will resume negotiations today. and wall street may be happy with the giants' super bowl win since the so-called super bowl indicator supposedly means that since an nfc team won, the stock market will produce significant

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." in sports, of course, as we mentioned, the new york giants are nfl champions after defeating the new england patriots in last night's super bowl. here's nbc's mario solis with an early look at all your sports headlines. >> hello again. the giants are super bowl champs, and they did it in dramatic fashion with another late rally against brady and the patriots. super bowl xlvi, the first to ever be played in indy and the second bowl to start the scoring with a safety. giants take a 2-0 lead when tom brady is called for intentional grounding in the end zone. new york up two. moments later add seven more. eli manning to his favorite target. victor cruz. giants up, 9-0 after one. new england cutting the lead to six with a field goal, and then

tom brady caps off a 98-yard drive with a touchdown to danny woodhead. pats with a 10-9 lead at the break. after madonna was done doing her thing at halftime, tom brady goes back to work in the third, connecting with aaron hernandez over the middle. the pats flex their muscle and take a 17-9 lead. the giants would stick around with a pair of field goals, and we now move to the fourth. new york down two, needing a first down. manning tosses one up to mario manningham and he hauls it in. that's a remarkable catch down the sidelines. the longest play of the super bowl, and the g-men were back to business. under a minute to play, the pats let bradshaw score the go-ahead touchdown. giants up, 21-17, with the pats needing a miracle. last play of the game. patriots have to go to the end zone. brady with a hail mary. it falls incomplete. a thrilling end to super bowl xlvi, eli manning wins the mvp award as the giants hold on to beat the patriots, 21-17. >> i'm proud of the guys, proud

that's your pacific event of the day. >> todd, thanks so much. here's a look at this morning's headlines in entertainment. usually guy films don't do well on super bowl weekend, but not this super bowl weekend. "chronicle" debuted at number one, taking in over $22 million. the ghost story "the woman in black" featuring "harry potter" star daniel radcliffe and appealing to a largely young female audience finished in second with $21 million. they both landed on the all-time top ten list for super bowl weekend debuts. the weekend's opening family film "big miracle" finished in fourth with $8.5 million. elsewhere harrison ford is in talks to appear in a sequel to his 1982 hit "blade runner." gerard depardieu is set to star in a film inspired by the former imf chief dominique strauss-kahn. and soccer star david beckham recently admits he was kicked off a kids' soccer field

after he complained that a referee ejected a 7-year-old. soccer dad too. this comes to us from wcau nbc 10 in philadelphia where in a town in new jersey it was a different kind of a sunday for one particular corporal marine. he was surprised with a parade after being reunited with his family. he had spent a year in afghanistan, and more than 100 people welcomed him home. they pride themselves on rock star-style homecomings for the troops. i'm lynn berry, and this is "early today," just your first stop of the day today on your nbc station.

while we're not having winter in many parts of the country, in japan it's a different story. massive snowfall has made this year's snow festival all the more elaborate. over 200 ice sculptures were on display in parts of japan. among them was a massive snow taj mahal. sculptures ranged from small works to some that measured up to nearly 50 feet. elsewhere competitors in japan had to dig their way to victory. around 260 teams faced off in the 12th annual japan all national hole digging competition. the winning team dug a hole over 11 feet deep in 30 minutes and took home about $1,200. a golden shovel is their prize.

diggers also strove for honors like most creative hole and most original team costume. and finally push-ups are hard enough but try doing them like this. a masseuse named mr. thumbs has set a new world record by pumping out 35 push-ups in 43 seconds using only his thumbs. having gained his extraordinary finger strength from working daily massage shifts, he said he got -- he has his sights now set on breaking the world record for 3-point push-ups. it literally boggles my mind. i want a chair massage from that guy. like a shoulder massage. >> you might have to say easy. deep tissue is a different story when you're talking that guy especially in an argyle sweater. time for an an early look at some of the stories we'll follow on nbc. today, states suing over the health care law must file their brief on the central question whether the health care law is constitutional.
