>> good morning everyone. the time now is 4:30. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. lots to get to. let's check the forecast. good thursday morning to meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. well, we don't have as much fog but boy, is it chilly out there. grab a jacket. 41 degrees in santa rosa, 44 in livermore. we're headed toward the warmest day of the week, temperatures into the 70s in many cities. we'll tell you where and when we get rain. that's back in the forecast as well. let's check your drive with mike inouye. good morning. >> good morning. i noticed a problem with my maps. let's stick here and i'll tell you about the blurry picture behind me. we have construction back all over the bay, 680, the typical spot and we see slowing in the southbound direction. that is possibly caused by the crews still on scene. but we'll have an update in the next few minutes. i'll check on unexpected

closures. typically between that stretch they only have one lane in each direction closed. we'll see what the reason is. >> thank you, mike. >> we start off with good news, national unemployment numbers showing signs of improvement. >> but that does little to comfort those at one of the largest banks in the east bay. christie smith joins us live in concord where bank of america issued 450 pink slips. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yes, 450 bank of america workers here in concord got the bad news yesterday that in a matter of months their jobs will be eliminated. bank of america is saying this is meant to consolidate operations, reduce costs and increase efficiency. the workers are in the consumer service and operations unit and that includes a fraud and consumer claims unit and customer service contact center. the decision came bank of america is saying after a lengthy review, saying it had

excess office space here. last july it sold its downtown offices for about $80 million. that 450 number is only a fraction of the 30,000 jobs that the bank hopes to cut to reduce expenses by about $8 billion a year. boa saying employees can apply for other jobs in the bank or may get a severance package. the units are expected to close sometime in may of this year. reporting live in concord, christie smith. jon and laura, back to you. >> thank you for the update. >> a berkeley police officer is in the hospital after he was rammed by a suspect in a traffic stop. it happened at center and roadway in castro valley. two undercover officers were following the suspect. it started late yesterday when the officers pulled the suspect over. that's when he suddenly backed up, pinning the officer between the cars. he pinned the officer's partner opened fire.

>> i kept telling the people to duck and get out of the way. >> the suspect backed his vehicle, which pin add berkeley police officer between the suspect vehicle and the unmarked berkeley car. >> the suspect was shot. he is now in the hospital. police say the officer has serious injuries to his legs and hand. no word on why police were trying to stop the suspect. >> a neighborhood pulling together after a major drug bust in their back yard. more than 900 law enforcement members, fbi and local police and s.w.a.t. teams swarmed the neighborhood blocks from a basketball gym where kids played. la mon says he and his son watched it from their living room window. >> shocking to me because i was watching it as i was on my way to work and my kid looked out the window and said he seen the army, so i looked and he actually thought he saw the

army. >> that would abscary scene. the bay area sting netted 27 arrests but agents say they are not finished. they are looking for these six men believed to still be in the bay area. >> it is 4:34 now. the los angeles school hit by a teacher's sex abuse scandal is set to reopen today with a new staff. school administrators say it was a bold step to restore parents' confidence. 120 staff members at miramonte elementary were replaced after a two-day shutdown. the school and community were rocked by sex abuse charges against two former teachers last week. >> jean quan says the city is on the rise. the mayor delivered her address focusing on achievement. critics say she did not address some of the key issues the city faces. >> this was a campaign speech, this was not the speech of a leader after city with the problems that oakland has.

>> the mayor made no mention of the occupy movement in her speech. she's also face add number of other troubles in the past months, two top aides resigned, the police chief quit, and two recall petitions are circulating to replace her. >> 4:36 now. there is a high surf advisory and that's not just good news for surfers. a hollywood film crew heading out to half moon bay trying to get some of the big wave shots. crews visiting as they film for the new movie which covers the life of a surfer featuring a number of scenes at maverick and most of the filming is done but all of the conditions with the high surf just a must-have for the movie. of men and mavericks expected to be released in october. >> want to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. 4:36. >> good morning. it's cold out there but we're not dealing with the dense cloud cover that we had yesterday morning. taking a live look.

camera, 880 moves nicely northbound with the taillights past high street and the curve. heading through downtown you may find spots for construction in the southbound side. but no major slowing shows up and not a problem because of its lighter volume of traffic. for the nimitz, san mateo bridge you're okay. and north at the toll plaza smooth drive and the east shore freeway, the visibility is a little better from the toll plaza to the bridge where the construction zone continues on the lower deck out of san francisco and heading back to oakland. at least until 6:00 a.m. no slowing there either. light volume. back to you. >> thank you. if you haven't had a chance to catch this kid on court you may want to keep your eye out. jeremy lin bringing fire to the knicks. called the overnight sensation, lighting it up again in his third start, lin had been red hot over the last week and scored 23 points and a career high ten assists last night to help the knicks beat the

>> welcome back everyone. good thursday morning to you. taking a live look outside. a cool start to the morning. stick around. we've got the full forecast coming up. >> the fight over a new health care mandate that would force religious groups to cover contraceptives in their health care plans is growing stronger. republicans in congress vowing to repeal it. the catholic church joined in the opposition, now it's become a talking point for republican presidential candidates. >> the president who is delivering the undermining religious liberty. >> this is wrong. if i'm president i'll restore and protect our religious liberty in this great country. >> the white house argues the policy is not anti-religion, it's about making medicine and insurance available to women who need it. congress will take up the issue in a hearing starting next month. >> getting through airport

security lines at sfo will be faster. the secretary of homeland security says the precheck program will expand to sfo. passengers that provide the extra information about themselves, they will qualify for special screening lines. they would get to keep their shoes and belts on and lap tops in cases. by the end of 2012 the pre-check program is expected to be at 35 airports nationwide. >> it is 4:44. apple is bringing green to sunnyvale, the tech giant has leased a 156,000 square foot office building at the sunny veil town center. the space will accommodate about 400 workers and likely boost local restaurants and shopping. apple says it plans to start moving in this summer. the company has leased two other large buildings in sunnyvale and expects to have about 2,000 workers in the city. >> time to get a check of the market this is morning.

for that we turn to jackie deangelis. good morning, jackie. >> good morning to you. the futures are a touch lower after markets posted some mild gains on wednesday. investors monitor talks in greece, leaders have yet to agree on all of the conditions that would secure bailout money. we're going to get data in the u.s. on new filings for unemployment and hotel trade. the dow rose 5 points to close at 12,888, the nasdaq adding 11 points to close at 2915. federal and state regulators reached a $25 billion settlement with five banks over mortgage and foreclosure abuses t deal came together after hold outs new york and california signed on. florida could join on soon. bank of america, jpmorgan, citi groorks and allied financial agreed to reduce loan payments and pay those wrongly foreclosed upon. the settlement only covers

mortgages owned by those banks and not fanny mae and freddie mac. google is close to drive. "the wall street journal" says it's going to allow people to store on remote servers so they can be accessed and shared. google is expected to launch drive in the next few weeks or months. it will be free for most. back over to you. >> thank you very much, jackie. >> speaking of clouds, meteorologist christina loren joins us. we're going to have a wonderful day. >> because my head's up in the clouds? >> we like that the way. >> we have rain dropping from the clouds as we head through next week. starting this weekend we've got a rainy pattern that will kick into high gear as we kick off next week. and we're talking about maybe an inch of rain. a couple storms on the way to the bay area, that would significantly change the conditions that we've got in store for you. sunshine and 70, 47 now in concord. at 44 degrees in livermore, so

much cooler this morning than we were at this time yesterday. as we head throughout the day today, temperatures will be on the cool side for the first part of the day. high pressure is going to warm us up by about 10:00 a.m. we'll see that full on sunshine over the bay area and temperatures climbing into the mid-60s by noon. rounding out the day with plenty of 70s. so it works like this. 66 degrees in redwood city. 63 in san francisco. 67 today in santa rosa and 64 in concord. through the next three days you stay mild until late saturday into sunday when the rainy pattern develops. sunday a few showers over the greater bay area, monday a washout with rain at times. then showers early tuesday, we need the rain and it look likes we're going to get quite a bit of it. tuesday, looking good for your valentine's day plan. you head throughout the day you don't need that umbrella. watch how you could find dense patchy fog especially at the coast. back to you.

gate bridge this morning. not as fogged in as it was yesterday out there. what is in store in the weather department? we'll check in with meteorologist christina loren. 4:52. >> two myth buster stars returning after a dangerous stunt sent a cannon ball flying into people's homes. adam savage and carrie will appear on the 22nd as part of the national engineer's week. if you recall the last time the myth buster stars were in the neighborhood it was to apologize after a stunt at a nearby bombing range sent a 30-pound cannon ball tearing through two homes and a minivan. as for this event it seems to be popular already. seating is open to the public but all of the advanced tickets have been snatched up. >> this will be a monumental day in the bay area. caltrans says the new bay bridge is set to open on labor day next

year. 19 months from now. the original plans called for the westbound span to open in 2013 but the eastbound about a year later. but work including the presidents day weekend closure, a reminder, will allow both directions to open at the same time. another closure closer to the opening date will be necessary for crews to finish work on the approach and the toll plaza area. >> also ahead of schedule the work on 101 at tully road. "mercury news" says it looks like the project could be done in may, several months ahead of schedule. when it is tully road will be seven lanes and include a merging lane and bike lane and extra lane south. >> if you are heading out the door and wondering what the traffic is like we've got your answers. we've got mike inouye. >> that 101 at tully, that will

be a welcome change. construction here as well on the peninsula. oregon expressway north and southbound 101 are closed for the timing. you'll see the flashing lights on 101. it is not causing a slowdown on the portion of the peninsula. lower bay shore looking fine for 101 and 280 up into the city from palo alto through san mateo. see how things across the san mateo bridge. at the toll plaza, hardly anybody there. the toll takers are there. those are keeping people from having to slow down too much. and no problem past where the truck is. there are metering lights of the san mateo bridge. back to you. >> pretty clear shot. >> sir paul mccartney will be the latest beatle to get his own solo star on the hollywood walk of fame. >> he will unveil his star in front of the old capital records building.
