yesterday as offshore winds pick up. 43 in oakland, 42 in livermore, grab a jacket. we're headed to the 70s. a nice one, then the rain moves in. first, mike has an issue that could slow you down in the astro valley. >> now we have flashing lights. you pass by dutton and approach grand area. that's heading to the castro valley y, your commute direction northbound 238 is starting to slow as another accident is clearing. >> thank you very much. here's some news for bay area drivers. they may soon be able to buy a faster commute. bob redell is live with a plan to allow more cars into the express lanes. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. the overall plan is to have hundreds of these express lanes

installed throughout the bay area. we're aware of the hot toll lanes on 680 southbound coming in, you'll be able to use them here on this road here. we're eastbound 237 doing to northbound 880. this is a huge commute corridor getting from mountain view up to fremont eventually oakland. as we transition, you would be able to see the signage that indicates that they would open up in a couple of weeks. these are for people who are not carpoolers and if you have a transponder when these open, you as a driver would be able to hop into this lane paying a minimal 30 cents, and shave an estimated 10 minutes off of your drive. now you are in the hov lane. there will be new lanes in the future.

we're going to head north of here, westbound 92. toll lanes in there, on the dumbarton and the bay bridge toll plaza and 580 in livermore and pleasanton. these are going to be phased in. by 2015. so we're looking at having hundreds of miles of these toll lanes. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. a berkeley police officer in the hospital after he was rammed by a suspect during a traffic stop. it happened late yesterday at the center street and grove way castro valley area where two undercover officers followed the suspect from berkeley.

the suspects decided to back up and pinning the officer. the partner opened fire. >> i kept telling the people to duck and get out of the way. >> the suspect backed his vehicle which pinned the berkeley police officer between the suspect vehicle and the unmarked workly car. >> the suspect remains hospitalized as is the officer who has serious injure i to his legs and hand. no word why they were trying to stop the suspect. we're learning more about the possible motive in the shooting of a federal agent. the 61-year-old man was wounded during a confrontation outside his home. the chronicle reporting the agents wife is a former student of the suspect deny nis wagwell. he is a bead mont optician who taught in union city. he could be arraigned today. the still unidentified agent

developments. good morning. >> good morning. students can expect 120 new faces. miramonte elementary in l.a. fired everyone on its pay roll after shocking child abuse allegations came to light. so today it's day one on the job for a new principal, 90 teachers, new support staff, even new janitors. the focus of the scandal is on two former long time teachers, both are accused of committing lewd acts on children. one over five-year span that ended in 2010. the unified district is now facing three lawsuits from former students, they allege the district and the principals failed to protect them. it's not vacation they hoped for. new video shows the crowned princess ship docked at port everglades florida. it's not supposed to be here it's supposed to tour the caribbean but had to cut the trip two days short because of the norovirus outbreak. 114 passengers, 60 crew members came down with the uncomfortable

we're looking pretty good. you want to dress comfortably. we'll see the mid-60s. you can see clouds arcing up and around the ridge. storm track well to our north. but we've got an area of low pressure that will break this ridge down as we head through the next 48 hours. we'll start to see changes today, peak warmth as the winds are off shore and because of the winds we're not seeing a lot of fog. quite a difference from yesterday morning. mostly clear conditions, even warmer this afternoon. by tomorrow cloudy start, mild conditions. you can see from the futurecast we stop the clock at 3:00 a.m. a little bit of drizzle in the north bay. so this will keep your temperatures down. not by much. we head throughout the afternoon tomorrow, still expecting the mid-60s. not quite as warm as what we're going to see today. take a look. 70 in santa cruz. we'll hit about 66 degrees even along the peninsula. redwood city we're comfortable

there. through saturday the clouds increase, by sunday a few shower, mostly in the north bay. monday rain at times over the greater bay area. then tuesday we'll have showers for the first part of the day, clearing for the second half of valentine's day. >> we'll be watching that closely because i'm hosting a heart walk hopefully it clears by then. to the south bay things are moving nicely in the northbound direction. no need for clearing because it's clear. that will be getting congested. at tully up to 680, that will show slowing over the next 20 minutes. we see this, 20 minutes driving out of the altamont pass through livermore. speeds in the 40s and 50s, a typical pattern to the dublin interchange. no big deal here. your typical slowing, westbound 580 through the tri-valley. southbound 680 approaching the walnut creek interchange. one lane blocked. the volume is building out of

concord but at 65 shows up as you are passing. shouldn't be a problem as you approach 24. we're looking over to the area approaching the bay bridge toll plaza and a smooth drive. i passed up a couple of live shots. let's see what we have how things are shaping up. 101 at 880, no major problems and no problem for the live shot. a good volume of traffic starting to build. another live shot, as we pass by the area of the oakland coliseum. 880 starting to build. kicking off slowing into the 50s in spots for the nimitz. back to you guys. >> here is good news. the new bay bridge set to open ahead of schedule. if all goes as planned the entire bridge will open on labor day of next year. original plans called for the westbound span to open in 2013 and the eastbound span to open about a year later. but the upcoming presidents day weekend closure we've been telling you about will help make sure both directions open at the

same time. caltrans says one more closure closer to the opening day will be needed so crews can finish up work on the approach, landing and the toll plaza. also ahead of schedule, the work on highway 101 at tully road in the south bay, the "mercury news" mr. road show says it looks like the project could be done in may. when it is, tully road will be seven lanes wide and a merging lane and bike lane. also an extra lane on 101 south to yorba buena road. >> remember this story t myth buster stars, now returning to dublin, kind of the scene of the crime after a dangerous stunt sent a canon ball into people's homes. the two will appear at dublin high school as part of a national engineers week. the last time the stars were in the neighborhood, yeah, they had to apologize after a stunt at a bomb testing range sent a 30-pound canon ball tearing

employees here in concord who just got word yesterday that come may they will be out of a job. these workers are in the customer services unit. why is this happening? bank of america says it's constantly looking at opportunities to operate more efficiently including optimizing building space. apparently there is a lot of excess space at the concord campus. the impact goes beyond the workers. the mayor of concord is extremely disappointed with this saying that it doesn't help our unemployment situation which is higher than the national average. sutter shelt moving from san francisco, also service master clean could add 100 jobs to the area and a new walgreen's that could add retail jobs. b of a workers told they could apply for other jobs in the company or may get a severance

package. >> christie smith, thank you. a second murder mystery in hayward. the body of an unidentified man found early yesterday under the tracks near hampton road. investigators calling it a murder. this is the second body found in the past week. another man was found about three miles away. no word whether these are related. >> san francisco muni driver facing criminal charges for a fatal accident will return to court. wallace loggens is charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. prosecutors say he hit a 23-year-old woman in a crosswalk in august. >> federal agents looking for six men that got away during a major drug raid. more than 900 law enforcement and s.w.a.t. teams swarmed a

over the sunol grade. this will show you the plan for the area. by 2015 want to have hundreds of miles more of these express lanes installed throughout this bay area. they started this in 2010. here we are 2012, in a couple of weeks opening these lanes that we're on. eventually they will have westbound 92, 84, and the aplochs to the bay bridge t dumbarton, san mart, 580, those all up and running. you can see now here we are in the commute, southbound 880, one of those people who is -- wait a couple of weeks and you can pay and get in the special hov lanes we're in. reporting live in milpitas, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> see the guy in back of you. >> i like rolling with bob.

>> 6:41 now. good thursday morning to you. gop lawmakers are gearing up for a new fight with the white house. it is all over the obama administration's decision to force religious affiliated groups to cover contraceptive costs in their health care plans. brian mooar tells us more about. good morning, brian. >> reporter: well, the white house says the president is just trying to protect women, but republicans on capitol hill say the president has gone too far and they are threatening to roll it back, legislatively if they have to. house speaker john boehner says this is nothing short of an attack on religious liberty that must not and will not stand in his words. what exactly he can do isn't clear. any legislation the house puts forward would certainly be blocked in the democratic controlled senate. they wouldn't even bring it up for a vote. the white house says that the president is basically trying to come up with a policy that is pro woman, not anti-religion.

>> welcome back everyone on this thursday morning. 6:45. christina loren is telling us another spectacular day. >> most spectacular day of the week if you are looking for the warmth. we have a lot of sunshine on tap for today. and plenty of 70s. take a look at this beautiful sun rise. looking down at san francisco from high atop san bruno mountain you can see how pretty it is out there this morning. and how clear it is. you can see yesterday at this point we were completely socked in with fog so getting a gorgeous sunrise and we're going to see a lot of sunshine throughout the day, making this the warmest day of the week. temperatures are running a little on the cool side. you're at 41 in santa rosa. 53 for san francisco. 43 in sunnyvale. something you can peel off by noon as temperatures climb into the mid-60s at noon. high pressure is the reason why. you can see the clouds arcing up and around that ridge.

as we head throughout the day it will set up driving the winds offshore, warming as they pump from land to sea. even warmer than yesterday by 5 to 8 degrees. we can get a few more clouds so it's going to take the temperatures down. you can see here on shore know sets back up by 3:00 a.m. friday. by 11:00 a.m. we'll see clearing but yeah, that cloud cover at the top of tomorrow morning will make for a very cool day in terms of where we expect to end up. 70 in los gatos, about 68 in milpitas, 70 in fairfield and 68 in pittsburg. comfortable at the coast, 63 in half moon bay. 63 in pacifica. throughout the next couple of days we do start to change. more showers in the mix saturday into sunday. a check of the drive with mike. >> we're going to take you out to the area near the carquinez bridge. westbound 80 at willow.

we had an earlier accident. the latest is westbound in the commute direction off of the bridge heading down into hercules. this is like hi to cause a ripple there, even after that clears we'll get a burst heading through hercules. we're seeing lighter volume through the area, it's a thursday so we don't see quite the hit we would on a tuesday. 40s where it's yellow down through berkeley, around the curve, the bay bridge plaza, the rest of the approach is moving. the bill continues and coming off of the workly serve it's slow into the maze for that approach. our choppers were along 101, now looks like they are heading over 92. you see the low clouds on the east bay side. no dramatic effect to the drive. we'll look at the south bay. traffic starts to slow, capitol
