ramp from northbound 101 is closed heading toward the dumbarton bridge area. also further south the oregon expressway off ramp has that crew there as well. despite those no slowing and a lot of alternates through the area. we'll show you other spots coming up. >> thank you, mike. >> firefighters right now mopping up after an early morning fire at a san rafael lumberyard. >> it erupted at 3:00 this morning. christie smith joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. it's never a good sign when a lumberyard packed with wood and other combustible material has flames coming out of it. that's what happened here. firefighters ran into this overnight at the san rafael lumber and building supply about 2:45 this morning. a two-alarm fire on anderson drive. i spoke with the fire chief who

tells me the flames were pouring out of the back of the building where there are small storage buildings, and not from the main building. this is an l-shaped configuration here. firefighters tell me they attacked it from all sides and all 35 firefighters here. what they say really was on their side was an automatic sprinkler system that worked. here is the fire chief. >> there was a considerable amount of lumber and materials that were burning on the outside of the structure and the fire had started to move to the inside. as you can imagine, great concern about a lumberyard and the amount of combustible materials. >> reporter: right now they are doing overhaul and trying to ventilate the roof where there was some damage. they are trying to make sure that everything is out and let the heat out of the building. took about an hour to knock down. investigators are here now working on a cause and a damage

estimate. reporting live in san rafael, christie smith. jon and laura, back to you. >> thank you very much. it's 4:33. san jose police are looking for suspects in the fourth homicide of the year. a man was dropped off at the medical center last night with stab wounds. he died. police are investigating where he was stabbed and why. >> the city of oakland trying to shut down a pair of hotels popular with prostitutes. tocourt day in an effort to close the national lodge on international boulevard and the economy inn on east 12th street. the city says both hotels have extensive history of allowing prostitution and in some cases involving children. both are under court order to clean up their act. the next step could be closure for one year. >> police say the optician school teacher accused of shooting a customs official was infatuated with the victim's wife.

dennis bagwell is charged with attempted murder and assault. bagwell appeared in court but did not enter a plea. investigators say bagwell shot officer robert suplick on tuesday after developing an obsession with his wife. the officer is hospitalized in critical condition. >> also in court this morning accused serial killer joseph nasois set to enter a plea. a judge ordered nasoto stand trial for allegedly killing four northern california women between 1977 and 1994. the judge also today will consider whether nasois able to continue representing himself. >> it is 4:35 right now. state of the city or state of the city's retirement benefits. last nightmare chuck reed spent a good chunk of time during his address talking about the city's surging retirement cost on the heels of questioning whether he

used phony estimates for the future pension costs. union members listening to each and every word and calling f gi the initiative to be taken off the ballot. reed says that's politics. >> the people decide this is a political stunt, it's political theater, a campaign season, we're going to have a ballot measure. you have to expect that. >> we believe that if we want to find real solutions that we need to have real negotiations and we need real numbers to do that. >> mayor reed also highlighting achievements in the past year, praised the task force for reducing gang violence and pointed to successes in providing homes for the homeless. >> eight more employees at a peninsula elementary school are on leave. the redwood city district says it's investigating whether staffers followed proper procedures in the handling of abuse allegations. special education teacher alexia

you saw briefly is accused of kicking and slapping two of her special needs preschool students at roosevelt elementary. the alleged abuse happened in december and january but an aide did not come forward until february 1st. she is due in court in march. we'll also find out today why a south bay principal was suddenly placed on leave and escorted off of the school grounds. san jose unified said it will send out a letter to parents explaining why the first year principal was removed from shallenberger elementary. it's about a block west. >> a tip from a death row inmate led officers to a crime scene where human remains were found. an update to a story we told you about last week. serial killer wesley shermantine drew a map of what he said were burial spots of victims. the map detailed areas on his

family's property. searchers following the map made a grizzly discovery. >> the dog alerted. when investigators went over to see what the dog alerted on they found human remains. it was a skull. >> deputies say the remains could belong to cindy vanderheiden who went missing in 1998. shermantine began talking after his killing partner committed suicide last month. shermantine also says herzog was responsible for the abduction of michaela garecht of hayward who disappeared in 1988. the search resumes today. >> los angeles police are on the lookout for a man convicted of threatening to kill madonna. 54-year-old robert dewey hopkins walked out of the metropolitan state hospital about a week ago. described as highly psychotic and he was admitted to the hospital last year after serving a 10-year prison sentence for

stalking madonna. >> let's get a look at the forecast for today. meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. you made to the friday, you got the weekend just around the corner. we're going to see nice weather for the first part of the weekend. showers on the way come sunday into monday. and we're looking toward a wet pattern. so enjoy the sunshine. temperatures are running a little on the cool side. you're at 50 degrees in san mat mateo, and you're at 48 degrees in san jose. throughout day it works out like this. by noon climbing into the 60s in many cities. as we head throughout probably 4:00 p.m., that's when we'll see the temperatures at their peak for today. and that means plenty of upper 60s, a couple of low 70s throughout the day. so we're looking good. as we head throughout sunday, showers move in and that continues through valentine's day. we'll help you make those plans. a couple of opportunities where you'll be able to get outdoors

investors continue to monitor the ups and downs concerning greece and its debt crisis. the greek government reached a deal thursday for new budget cuts but european leaders are imposing more conditions on the deal. the asian and european markets are lower. in the u.s. some data this morning on the trade deficit and consumer sentiment. and ben bernanke speaks this afternoon. the dow rose on thursday to close at 12,890, the nasdaq up 11 to close at 2927. google reportedly working on a home entertainment system that will be branded under its own name. the system which can stream music throughout your home would be google's first effort to make and market consumer electronic devices. the apple rumor mill, it's spinning again. reports saying that apple has chose at any first week of march to unveil the next version of the ipad. no word on a street date. reports say that the ipad 3 will be similar to the ipad 2 but run

mad cow disease. 59-year-old eileen shaw died from it after contracting what is suspected to be the disease. her ex-husband telling us once she got sick deterioration quickly followed. marin county health and human services said they ruled out the link to mad cow disease. they say this is based upon test results at a national reference laboratory. furthermore, we have no evidence that suggests a casual linkage between the suspect cases nor is there any evidence to suggest a risk to food supply. >> a dying oakland father is getting a second chance at life. it will give the undocumented immigrant a kidney transplant. hospital had initially denied the operation to 35-year-old even though he was getting his kidney from his wife. ucsf said he was concerned he couldn't pay for follow-up care.

when it goes up next week. the shelter raised $4,000 in two weeks to pay for this. it says domestic violence is never a private matter. it's a direct reference of course from the comment mirkarimi made last month when he said the alleged incident involving his wife was a private matter. the sheriff will stand trial for domestic abuse charges on february 24. >> it's 4:54. cruise ships won't be able to dump sewage in the coastal waters thanks to a new law. the obama administration announced it finalized paperwork on a bill that bans cruise ships from dumping in state waters. the epa estimates the new law will stop more than 22 million gallons of treated sewage from being dumped offshore each year. >> 4:54. let's take it outside and check the traffic with mike inouye. what's up? >> i want to recap. i don't think i'm the only one

that didn't know that cruise ships dumped sewage off the coast. looking to the north bay a smooth flow in a northbound direction for 680 to the tri-valley. both directions have crews between al costa and rutger. this is a pretty typical scene. bright lights at construction zone through the area. not a problem for these folks. we have also the high street on and off ramp from northbound 880 with construction from overnight. those crews should be picking up but we'll get a look and see how traffic flows. just above where it says today in the bay you can see the flashing lights. the off ramp is closed. that's why i can watch it. so far nothing going on but the traffic. >> thank you. >> this one's a great event. getting their groove on. the biggest names converging on l.a. for the grammy awards. >> though there are many nominee there is is one name that is expected to steal the show.
