leave. >> good morning. we have construction crews clearing from around the bay area. our chopper was set to be out there but they are held up so it's friday, we'll let them get a slower start. we'll get out there for a live shot. this is northbound 280, you see the city lights. northbound with the headlights coming up to the 880, 17 interchange. a smooth flow. a good number of cars. we may see slowing for 101. >> we'll watch the sun come up as well. >> new this morning, fire crews now still at the scene of a lumberyard fire in san rafael. it started at rafael lumber and building supply on anderson drive and bellham boulevard around 3:00 this morning. crews were able to knock it down in about an hour. they say 40-to 50-foot flames were bursting out when they arrived. they credit the sprinkler system for keeping the fire under

control. they are trying to find out the cause. >> stanford police released a sketch of the man they say tried to assault a student. the man entered an unlocked room around 2:00 a.m. on sunday and climbed into bed with a woman, that is the sketch there. she woke up when he tried to take off her clothes. the woman was able to get away. the man ran off. this marks the second assault incident on campus that morning. at around 1:15 a woman was tackled by a man while walking near kennedy grove. a passerby scared the attacker and police do not think these two incidents are related. >> new twists and turns in the case of a customs official shot outside his newark home. police say the suspect was infatuated with his victim's wife. stephanie is live at the hall of justice where the suspect is expected back in court this morning. good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning. 61-year-old dennis bagwell was here yesterday charged with

attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon and assigned a public defender. as you mentioned he may be back this morning to enter a plea. all of this is happening as we are finding out more about possible motives. bagwell allegedly shot robert suplick, right outside of the officer's home. in court records police say that bagwell developed fantasy about his victim's wife irenea. he had taught her at union city's bay area optical school. smith told police she turned him down but stayed friendly with him. sometimes even exchanging text messages. suplick confronted bagwell and told him to leave the couple alone after he was spotted, quote, lurking in the bushes outside their home. in fact, police said neighbors and even smith reported spotting bagwell's vehicle outside the couple's home a week before the shooting, up till a few hours before it all happened. bagwell was also the property

manager of an oakland apartment complex. the "mercury news" spoke with a woman who lives there who said she spotted a woman in her 30s with a russian-like accent in bagwell's home so details continue to come out with this case. we're live in fremont. stephanie chuang. back to you. >> thank you very much. occupy cal protesters back on campus, so are the tents. you are looking at video of the last encampment in the same spot. this was dismantled by police in fall. this time police are taking a more hands off approach. police and the dean of students having protesters to take down the tents but so far they are not budging. on that occupy theme in oakland, police showing the serious about cracking down on violent occupy protesters. joseph rionas was arrest forward violating a stay away order. he was apparently found on the

plaza though he was told to stay 300 feet away. the order was issued after a january 28 protest. that's when he was arrested that night and charged with battery of a police officer and refusing to leave the scene of a riot. >> 6:05. stockton police are looking at a drive-by shooting a. gun man pulled along side a victim's fire and opened fire around 8:00 last night. the driver hit in the leg and ran off -- run off the road down 15 feet into a parking lot where he hit several parked cars. police do not have a description of the shooter. >> friends and family saying good-bye to a well known junior college football coach. public viewing will be held for foothill coach doug boyett. he died during his sleep a few weeks ago. he spent 30 years are at the foothill college inol los altos the last five as head coach. today's viewing will be at

roller, happgood and tinney, then a public memorial tomorrow at 1:00 at the foothill college gym. >> a verdict has come in for an islamic extremist on trial for killing two u.s. airmen at an airport in germany. marla tellez joining us from our newsroom. she has the latest. >> good morning. that verdict just came down, a german court sentencing a 21-year-old albanian to life in prison today. he shot and killed two u.s. airmen at frankfurt's airport. he shot them only after learning they were heading to afghanistan. now to the latest in syria. its largest city is under attack this morning. two explosions targeted the security compounds in the city overnight killing at least 25 people and injuring almost 200.

the northern city is syria's economic and business hub and historically has been loyal to embattled president bashar al assad. so state tv is blaming terrorists for the attacks. the debt crisis in greece is sparking outrage in the streets of athens. new video shows anti-austerity protesters throwing petro bombs at police, officers firing back with tear gas. striking workers are upset over government cuts and tax increases. the strikes and protests have practically paralyzed the country and many businesses are closed and public transportation is hard to come by there. >> thank you very much. closer to home, a long weekend for oakland city workers, today is another furlough friday. emergency services will not be affected and offices will also be closed on monday in observance of lincoln's birthday. >> 6:07. we're heading into the lover's

weekend before valentine's day. meteorologist christina loren sharing the love with the weather. >> it's going to be lovely over the court of saturday and sunday. monday into tuesday we get some rain, but i think that you'll like what we have in store for the second half of valentine's day. we'll get to that momentarily. right now it's cold in places like livermore, at 42 degrees. not too bad, we're warmer than average for this time of year. for this time of day. 50 in san mateo, 53 in san francisco. on the way to about 60 degrees by noon by the bay, as you break for lunch today, 59 by the coast. so cooler with more clouds at the coast. by 4:00 p.m., mostly sunny. with 66 degrees valentine's day. just around the corner. we're going to get showers for the morning. keep that in mind. around 48 degrees. if you want to do brunch with your sweetheart. noon, 57 degrees. mostly cloudy conditions and those of you celebrating at

night you're going to get the best weather. a mix of clouds and stars out there. 53 degrees. on the cool side. we lose the chance of rain by about 11:00 a.m. on tuesday. 6:08. let's check your drive, see how that's shaping up on a friday with mike. >> good morning. it's a friday obviously but also friday, a lighter traffic flow. southbound 101, this will catch you by surprise, a lot of activity south of monterey road. reports of a car off the roadway into the ditch. then smoke from the car, one person is out of that vehicle, another person sounds like in the vehicle. we have crews on the scene. you'll see flashing lights. i'll track this, it's not a major concern but there is the fact that someone is in the car. as far as the flow from there northbound 101 no problems through morgan hill and san jose. we see slowing northbound 87

>> welcome back. right now it is 6:12. and fans bracing for a good time out on the golf course at the pebble beach event this weekend. round two of the popular at&t national pro am starts in about one hour. bob redell, a cinderella story, getting that front row seat. how is it swinging? >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. my front row seat is in that luxury box. they are cleaning it up. we're going to try to get in there. it's one of the perks of being me. meantime, have to suffer outside by the 18th green here on the pebble beach golf course. we'll show this in a half hour. a beautiful sunrise. a beautiful view of the ocean

from here as well. a lot of big names i hear, a lot of people talking about tiger woods, his first time back to the pro am in 10 years and he got the celebrities, bill murray, ray roman no, george lopez and some famous folks from the bay area, giants starter matt cain, the only major league baseball player competing this weekend in the pro am. so is 49ers head coach jim harbaugh and his caddie, would you believe, maybe no surprise here, alex smith who tells us he was locked and loaded with plenty of golf advice for his boss. >> i pick my spots. on the 18th i left him to with it the putting. a little more club selection than yard and and toting the thing around all day. >> then going a few other guys, can i get a consensus. away we go. i need all the help i can get. >> reporter: one thing some of the players are raving about or

control. a weak disturbance did pass through the bay area earlier this morning. that is now on the way to pebble beach so. we're going to see winds pick up down there later today. i'll get to the forecast in a moment. for today, a cloudy start. areas of drizzle. by afternoon we'll get plenty of sunshine, staying mild with the 70s down in the south day. 72 in morgan hill. 69 degrees in san jose. and you'll hit about 66 degrees in danville so overall cloudier and cooler than where we ended up yesterday. yesterday, that was very, very warm for this time of year across the bay area. let's get to that forecast. at&t pro am, you saw bob redell talking about the winds. they are going to pick up and shift so they could come into play. 61 degrees on sunday with showers on the way. monday looks like a wash-out. tuesday, valentine's day we'll

see showers for the second half of the day. overall looking pretty good. it won't be a complete washout. that's monday t day you want to stay in. we'll check your drive with mike inouye. >> 680 the northbound side had construction going on between al costa and rudiard. we shouldn't see problems. here we see slowing approaching the dublin interchange. westbound 580 out of livermore. overall a lighter flow. no such break for highway 4. slow drive all the way to somersville. 59 through pittsburg and a nice flow through the walnut creek interchange. we'll see how things are shaping up. look at that, no problems for either decks 101 and 580 a

smooth drive. in to the city. a live look on the east bay, oakland past the coliseum. no major slowing. because of the volume of traffic. >> it's 6:18. all quiet at san quentin after a riot yesterday. guards fired rifles and used pepper spray to quell the violence after 150 to 200 inmates starting to fight in the yard. some had makeshift weapons. four went to outside weapons for serious injuries. the shots by guards were considered warning shots. >> the l.a. school district paid a teacher $49,000 after they fired him. reporting mark burt received the money to drop a challenge to a

dismissal. they let him go after finding out the sheriff's department was looking into allegations of lewd acts against students. the district says it made the payment because it didn't have evidence to back the firing at the time. >> for the first time in three deck kates the federal government -- the reactors will be installed in georgia. they will be the first u.s. reactors to implement a new design said to be safer and longer lasting. construction will cost an estimated 1 be $4 billion. the reactors could be up and running by 2016. >> it's 6:19. an advertising firm thinks it's found a way for b.a.r.t. to raise money without raising fares. talking about putting bile boards along the right-of-way along -- the areas are along highwayssh maintenance yards and in transit stations. the agent says b.a.r.t. would make about 10 million a year

squirrel monkey will be returned to his exhibit tomorrow. someone stole the monkey from the enclosure in december. the next day a man told police he found sam in san francisco's stern grove and lured him into his back pack. employees are checking to see if that man can receive the $5,000 reward. >> time for a business and tech report. scott mcgrew is checking in. >> the latest is we have steve jobs' fbi file. back in the early '90s, steve jobs was consider forward a position in washington during the administration of george herbert walker bush. the background investigation found much of what anybody who knew him knew, that he was a bragert, insisted on his way, several called jobs dishonest. the report also details a plot by an unidentified man who claimed to have placed bombs in silicon valley and demanded steve jobs pay him $1 million to

defuse them. no bombs were discovered. to this day we don't know who the extortionist is. back in modern day apple shares are just under $500. that gives apple an overall worth of $460 billion. you have math here. microsoft, 251 billion, google 198 billion. you do the matt. apple is worth more combined. linked in turning in profits, also the size of the company doubled last year. linked in on a hiring tear, telling reporters on the phone call yesterday they expect this quarter to be their biggest hiring quarter ever. earlier we learned that al assad's e-mail was hacked. we got to see messages from advisers suggesting ways to influence the american media. this morning we know how hackers from anonymous were able to get into his e-mail. his password was 12345.

anniversary with a clash with police. demonstrators say they are here because they are concerned over high tuition and economic unfairness are still around. >> same issues definitely exist. we do have a list of demands that most of them haven't been met yet so you know, we're -- some of the occupy oakland people are down here with us tonight and you know, we're part of occupy and we haven't gone anywhere. we're still here. >> reporter: and they say they are not leaving even though they have bin advised that they shouldn't have tents on campus and should leave. they hope that more people come out and join them. we've been out here for about 40 minutes and so far honestly i haven't seen any uc police here at all. reporting live at uc-berkeley. john and laura, back to you. >> thank you. oakland will go to court to try

to shut two hotels. the national lodge on international boulevard and the economy inn on east 12th street are both havens for hookers. both have a history of allows prostitution sometimes involving children. they have been under court order to clean up their act. but those efforts have failed. now the city attorney will ask for the maximum penalty to shut them down for one year. >> disturbing details emerging in the case of a customs official shot outside his newark home. mess say the suspect had an obsession with the victim's wife. stephanie chuang is live at the hall of justice where the suspect is expected back in court. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. that's right. 61-year-old dennis bagwell may enter a plea. he was here yesterday afternoon for his arraignment charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon and also to find a public defender. this as we learn more about a

possible motive. bagwell allegedly shot robert suplick, also 61, tuesday morning outside the officer's newark home. in court records bagwell became obsessed with the victim's wife whom he had taught. that began a few months ago. smith told police she rejected bagwell's advances and remained friendly with him and occasionally texted him but eventually confronted bagwell. told him to leave the couple alone after he was spotted, quote, lurking in the bushes outside the home. bagwell lived with his wife in fremont until they filed for divorce in 2009 and lost their home to foreclosure a year later. we spoke with the owner of the schools where bagwell worked and he said that despite all of those recent changes bagwell

never acted differently. jon and laura, back to you. >> thank you. a man shot by police apparently has a criminal history. 48-year-old steven moore is the target of a narcotics investigation. two officers were tailing him when they tried to stop him he allegedly backed up his car into one of the officers. he remains in critical condition. the the officer is recovering at home. >> eight more employees are placed on leave this morning at a peninsula elementary school. the redwood city school district says it's investigating whether staffers followed procedures in the handling of abuse. alexa is accused of kicking and slapping at least two of her preschool students at roosevelt elementary. an aide did not come forward

in health plans. brian mooar is live in washington with details on what is happening now this morning. good morning. >> reporter: hi, laura. breaking news, we're hearing that the white house is going to address the issue today, that there may be some sort of change or tweak in the policy but whether it goes far enough to satisfy critics that's something we're going to have to see. kristen welker is saying that the white house after this is announced according to outside sources is going to have a policy that will still cover all women, make sure that they get contraceptive coverage without a co-pay. this has been a raging issue in washington at the cpac political action conference for conservatives, about 10,000 gathered, expecting to hear from three of the four presidential candidates. mitt romney, rick santorum and newt gingrich. mitt romney has the most riding on this. he has been having trouble catching fire with conservatives. rick santorum hoping he can
