annoying drizzle that makes you put on your windshield wipers for a second and turn them off. >> we see lighter showers around sunol grade and the south bay. scattered showers around the east bay. a weather system crossing the central coast, adding extra lift to the moisture this morning but as we start to see north of the golden gate clearing that will work its way north to south. we can see hour by hour in our rainfall futurecast the clouds break up around midday. south bay maybe lingering clouds around san jose. temperatures hour by hour, by lunch time, 50s to near 60 but not the 70s we saw a couple days ago. this is a brief break coming in by 4:00 this afternoon, sunday morning and more rain will come in. that system packs a bigger punch, colder air and lower snow levels. >> it's mid-february, we're ready for winter.

the parental instinct of a peninsula father is leading to a major staff shakeup at a local elementary school, something should have happened before his son was abused. >> reporter: the father of one of the alleged victims of abuses by special needs teach ear lexia bogzes is speaking out because his son can't do it himself. is he autistic. the 5-year-old's father explained to us what he believes happened to his son while enrolled in a special education preschool class run by the doctorate roosevelt elementary school. apparently he was fidgeting or not being compliant and the teacher came behind his chair and kicked him. >> reporter: there were also allegations of arm twisting and withholding food, all during a two-month period. a teacher's aide reported the alleged misconduct to redwood to police.

craigslist sell near an ambush and escaped a home surrounded by a police s.w.a.t. team. the situation ended in a standoff at a house on castlewood drive off springs road in vallejo yesterday. police say a buyer answered a craigslist ad was beaten and robbed by six armed men who were traced to the house on castlewood. when the people inside the house refused orders to come out, s.w.a.t. officers tossed tear gas canisters into the house. though police say the tear gas was non-flammable there was a fire a few minutes later and officers don't know what sparked it and that was not the last surprise. >> shortly thereafter the officers entered the residence and determined that there was no one inside the residence other than a couple of dogs. >> reporter: where did they go? >> at this point we don't know where the suspects have gone but the residence was empty. >> one of the dogs was killed in that fire. there was no one inside. the vallejo police believe the suspects were indeed inside the

house when they arrived on the scene. a cautionary tale this morning if you're headed outside to do yard work. san jose police are investigating the death of a man in the 1700 block of hillmont avenue. police say the 65-year-old man fell from the ladder and did not survive his injuries. neighbors say the man was trimming the tree for his tenants, when he fell. >> the gentleman was pruning the tree and he climbed up a little too high and lost his footing and fell down. >> police do not suspect foul play. more than 164,000 people end up in emergency rooms because of ladder accidents every year according to the consumer products safety administration. in san jose a woman was struck and killed in an intersection last night around 8:30 near the intersection of meridian avenue and west san carlos street. a green late 1990s legend was

driving northbound on meridian avenue when the driver struck the bomb. she died at the scene. the driver cooperated with investigators. alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this case. this morning the contra costa county sheriff's office wants you to look at a picture, finding a 66-year-old man angelo lucido. he is described as a white man, 5'8" tall, weighing 190 pounds with brown hair and eyes. if you have information, you are are asked to call the contra costa county sheriff's department. state officials shut down the massive construction project under way at san jose valley medical center. representatives from the state office of health planning and development went to the job site wednesday to stop the work. published reports say that the state cited two problems, one that the contractor changed building plans without state approval and the other that the county replaced a top inspector responsible for making sure that

those approved plans and building codes were followed. the hospital is undergoing a multimillion-dollar seismic, remodel and seismic updwrgrade. you can once again see banana sam. someone stole him in december, the next day a man said he found sam in a grove and lured him into his backpack. the monkey will be returned to his exhibit today and there's a bonus, if you take banana sam a valentine, you will be treated to $1 off admission all weekend long. 20 local kids in the east bay will receive a special gift today, they are getting free bicycles. as part of their second anniversary celebration, bikes for life, a non-profit bike shop will give away 20 bikes to a group of worthy and needy kids. the kids will get to pick out their wheels started today at noon, the events will be held in west oakland. and we still have more ahead for you on "today in the bay."

good morning. it's a good thing the rain is tapering off. tonight is the chinese parade through chinatown in san francisco. there are other events going on but this is the biggest one drawing more than 1 million people. deadly and dangerous, ak-47s, what cops call community guns which is firepower hidden in public places, what police are up against in the bay area as they battle heavily armed games. in san francisco, police officer are on to the game and going in for the guns.

armed men fired down an open road while army vehicles patrolled the streets. the violence is taking place between sunni militants who support the syrian opposition and the alois militants who support the president. a majority of 292 million people are sunni but syria's president belongs to the sect. ♪ and in tehran, iran's president marked the 33rd anniversary of the islamic revolution with a speech today. he said iran will soon reveal "big new nuclear achievements." mahmoud mahmoud ahmadinejad did not elaborate but insisted iran would never give up uranium enrichment. he insists his program is peacef peaceful. much more ahead on "today in the bay." still to come --

good morning. looking live at san jose, the clouds look dark and ominous. the kids were asking yesterday is it going to rain? i was surprised they remembered what rain was anyway because it's been a long time. how are you doing in the weather center, rob? >> pretty good. we're watching some light rain around parts of the bay area this morning and rain might be pushing it, maybe heavy drizzle coming down in a few spots.

temperatures thanks to the clouds kind of mild, in the 40s and low 50s to start off your morning so not too chilly outside right now but with the winds picking up for the afternoon they should pick up out of the northwest which would help to clear our skies out. right now mainly light winds. as we go through the day tomorrow we'll see mostly cloudy skies, by the afternoon, and real rain coming in as we go towards sunday evening into monday, and this next system should drop snow levels at least down to near 4,000 feet or maybe as low as 3,000 feet north of interstate 80 and the sierra, which is good news. also good news, some of the light rain air quality is back in the good range around the bay area and should stay that way for a while as long as we can keep showers and breezy knsz in the forecast. the radar right now, not picking up a lot, some areas of light rain, the radar occasionally runs into, with drizzle and light rain it is low to the ground. a lot of the radar will scan up

and above it. offshore though we have clouds this is a fairly weak system dropping into the central coast and will continue to scoot by to the south with northwest winds picking up for the afternoon. you'll see it here in the futurecast. showers and clearing starting off in the north bay, maybe some clouds lingering for the south bay, in terms of rainfall totals not a lot, this is mainly the drizzle fallen for today. watch as we shuffle ahead now into sunday and into monday, this is going to be the rain event right for your monday morning commute, maybe up to approaching close to a half inch of rain in some spots as we get towards monday morning. so for today close to 60 in san jose, mostly cloudy start, some clearing later on in the afternoon, out towards the trivalley. 50s and low 60s and around the north bay, 63 for santa rosa, 58 in san francisco. so some drizzle for the morning, i think towards the evening and into sunday morning we'll get this break and sunday night on into monday. here comes the rain and some cool temperatures we're looking at 50s for highs on monday, cold

enough again i think we'll keep our fingers crossed. could be snow up top mt. hamilton at least and then skies clear, looks like for valentine's day but towards the night maybe a few more showers after that, looks fairly dry for the second half of the week. >> the weather is certainly important today because san francisco's chinatown will light up for the chinese new year parade. the tradition spans some 150 years. the parade starts at 5:15 on market and second streets and will make its way up to geary boulevard, down post and finish at kearney and columbus. the parade will feature 100 boats, marching bands and spectacular 250-foot-long dragon honoring the year of the dragon. parade organizers say for the best spots stake out your space as early as 4:30 a.m. this morning, head to chinatown for a community fair.

knicks/lakers game -- >> doesn't get any more fun than that. >> reporter: what he's doing doesn't surprise me. it was a matter of him getting minutes to show his skills. he has vision, the ability to make everybody better and he's done that since like i said six years, i mean sixth grade. >> reporter: his basketball coach at palo alto high, lin led them to a state championship in his senior year. >> i coached him in high school i remember saying to myself, wow! >> reporter: and now lin is wowing the crowd with his moves as the starting point guard for the new york knicks. his growing legion of fans dubbed his momentum lin-sanity, a palo alto kid done good. >> seems just like an average joe almost even though he went to harvard, he's got the brains and whatnot but he seems more relatable to the average person than say like lebron james does.

this is unfamiliarer it for for san jose mayor chuck reed, his entire political career has been relatively by the book until our latest investigation. the issue here is the pension fund that thousands of san jose workers and the ethics of the mayor himself. our investigative unit continues to expose more internal documents. "today in the bay"'s" broke the story. >> reporter: this e-mail called our investigation "misleading." it was also sent to the council listing 400 and 431 million were used as the projection for retirement cost. what they left out? all these press releases from

the mayor last spring, each one warning costs could reach millions. the mayor says retirement costs could jump to 650 million if ajumpgss are adjusted to r lect modern conditions. it wasn't just in press releases. the mayor used it in his june budget mess annual. this document -- >> one more slide in a minute. >> reporter: in a steven at stanford and "vanity fair" magazine, that was in november. >> that was a number off the top of my head. >> reporter: retirement services director russell crosby said it once in a meeting last week. he told us his estimate was wrong. >> the mayor was told not to use that number, that the number was 400, that was the projection. >> reporter: why would you use that number? >> we used both numbers. >> are that number was used when calling for thisical emergency, that number was used in the

the sfpd says this litter of 3-week-old puppies was forcefully stolen from a home on the 100 block of cameron way in the bay view district on tuesday. the suspects forced their way into the house, attacked the two parent dogs with a blunt object, then made off with the puppies. police say because of the puppies' young age it is vital they be returned to their mother. >> we're hoping that these suspects return the dogs either to the victims, to the victim's home and/or to an animal care facility, so that the puppies can survive. >> if you know anything, you are asked to call the san francisco police department. much more ahead on "today in the bay," still to come, we have the latest on the maine caucuses. there is a lot at stake after gop presidential hopeful mitt romney's series of losses. plus take a look at this. the drive that has one bay area cindirhtic fef firefighters

we are looking live at the preparations, so quiet now but once that chinese new year's parade starts winding through chinatown in san francisco, boy, it is loud. this year, 250-foot-long dragon, because it is of course the year of the dragon. thanks so much for joining us on this saturday morning. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda, and will that dragon be wearing a little 250-foot-long raincoat? >> i think it will be okay. the roads there are a little bit wet, we had drizzle and light rain earlier but the radar for the most part now not seeing anything in terms of moderate rain. it would show up in yellow or orange there on the map, we're really not seeing a whole lot. you notice we have a system there crossing by just south of the bay area this morning, so that's the reason why, right around 3:00 and 4:00 this morning, we had a few light showers come on through, i think for the first half of the day you can see from 8:00 until about 2:00 or 3:00 in the

afternoon we'll still see pop-up showers around the east bay hills and the santa clara county hill tops, east of san jose and eventually clearing from north to south. temperatures toward lunch time not too bad t will take a while to clear out for the south bay. we'll call for partial clearing around san jose, clear skies up toward santa rosa where we should see low to mid-60s today. it will be a brief break. by 4:00 sunday evening the stronger system rolls in, more rain, and snow, maybe near 4,000 feet. so we'll talk more about that in the full forecast in a few minutes. >> here's to hoping. thank you very much. a major staff shakeup at a peninsula elementary school thanks to the parental instincts of a father. the father says the school could have prevented his son's abuse but did not. the redwood city teacher and eight other school employees are now on administrative leave in connection with the case. the the fore of one of the alleged victims and the lawyer of the special needs teacher says, has this to say. >> apparently he was fidgeting or not being compliant, and

presidential hopeful mitt romney. the one-time republican front-runner is looking to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat. romney stepped up efforts to court local republicans and he's now locked in a two-man race with texas congressman ron paul. neither newt gingrich nor rick santorum are actively competing in maine. this morning president obama is backing off a controversial requirement for birth control coverage. president obama is backing off his plan to have church-based hospitals and charities provide contraception for female employees, this comes after the president got an earful, including from members of his own party. instead the president announced that the insurance companies and not the churches, will provide this free service to all female employees. there could soon be some changes to martin luther king jr. memorial statue in the nation's capital. the towers legacy of the civil rights leader now immortalized in stone on washington's national mall seems to have something wrong with the inscripti inscription. critics say the shortened phrase

lexus several hundred feet over a sandy beach and into the ocean, still has police and firefighters baffled this morning. when they arrived at this scene, the ocean beach, the driver was still sitting in her car. firefighters got her out. she was hospitalized with minor injuries. then crews waited for low tide so they could pull the car out of the ocean yesterday afternoon. a large crowd is expected today for the grand opening of a 30,000 square foot library in los gatos. the new library is the first municipal facilities built since the 1970s. it opens a milestone event for the community following four years of planning and construction. the opening ceremony will feature music, a economic rative poem and recognize of the first library in santa clara county. a designation that usually goes to environmentally friendly buildings. the grand opening is at 10:00 this morning. they are very excited. this morning is your first

ucsf doctors believe they've found a way to use patients' own stem cells to repair damage caused by a heart attack. they've already tried the procedure in mice and will soon test that treatment in people. welcome back. here is a live look outside san jose and off to the east, you're looking at really a drizzle storm right now, 680 you'll find that around fremont, milpitas, the sunol grade light rain coming down and a lot of clouds in the south bay and because of the clouds it's not too chilly this morning, mostly 40s to low fift 50s outside. some of the temperatures, 52 in san jose. 50 san francisco. 40s around napa and santa rosa. skies are starting to clear. we have patchy fog in santa rosa. not much wind right now but later on today we should see northwest winds picking up which should hopefully clear out our skies as we get towards the afternoon. right now and through probably midday especially for the hilltops a chance of drizzle and light rain and clearing for the afternoon. not much clearing in terms of

how long it's going to last because midday sunday mostly cloudy skies, rain returns by sunday evening then as we head into monday, chilly temperatures, highs in the low to mid-50s for most of the bay area. air quality is finally looking good as we get the rain and the winds to pick up, that is helping to rinse out the air and in terms of the radar view, not a whole lot happening there as we widen out for you, we got this weather system that is passing by to the south taking all the low clouds and forcing them to rise over the hilltops which wrings out just a little bit of light rain. we're seeing that right now, later on today as the northwest winds pick up we'll see clearing but in the meantime right there around the east bay hills up towards the marin headlands up into the north bay, sonoma county as well and santa clara county and the hilltops through early afternoon, chance of drizzle and by the evening things should start to wind down. this is not a big one in terms of filling up rain gauges around the bay area. it is enough to wet the ground in a few spots especially along the 680 drive up towards sunol this morning. as we get towards sunday

life and so badly broken we couldn't save it so we had to amputate but she is fine for a tri-pawed dog. >> i get it. how cute. she doesn't seem as shimmy as a lot of chihuahuas. >> she's certainly not. and she's friendly and loves meeting new people and quite the adventurer, gets around great on three legs. she's running with the bhes est them. >> if there's a dog with a traumatic break, something happened to her leg, do we need to worry that that is going to kind of follow her and her personality, that she's going to be maybe afraid of people? >> you know that's a huge possibility. we certainly don't know what happened or how it happened, and you know, we have rescue dogs before who have been very hand shy and just really you have to build their confidence, and with people and let them know not all people are bad and they're kind. >> she seems like she's getting that message loud and clear.
