time to get with meteorologist christina loren to find out what kind of weather we have getting into the valentine's day holiday. >> the good news is for all of you lovers valentine's day looks like the one dry day, completely dry day in the near future. right now we have showers coming down and that activity is ramping up. you can see light showers now over the city by the bay in addition to that san mateo getting light activity and livermore, you've had a good looking cell pass through your area. 6:01. let's find out what it's really like out there in the elements. our bob redell is live in san jose. bob, looks like you have rain on the way. you look pretty dry. >> reporter: yeah. it's been on and off. thank you for the heads up. i'll make sure i'm in the live truck when that band comes through. yes, we have seen the rain. you can see that the rain has left plenty of water on the roads if you want to push in, you're looking on highway 101,

the headlights heading northbound. you've got 280 and 680 above. we're at the interchange. it's going to be an issue heading in to work. the roads are slick. if you're in an wraer it's raining you're going to have visibility issue. you want to watch your speed, make sure you're not tailgating your fellow commuters on the roadway. if you are crossing the bay bridge, there is a high wind advisory for that section. chp is recommending that people with high-profile vehicles not to cross the bridge, people who have campers, that sort of thing. we are going to have rain through today. not a lot of rain, accumulations twom a quarter to three-quarters of an inch. winds 15 to 25 miles an hour. higher in the hillside and the coastline looking at 35 to 45. but by tonight meteorologists predicting we should be drying out through tomorrow and then it starts again tomorrow night.

reporting live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. as bob told you, slicker roads, lower the speeds. let me take to you the latest from chp. bob didn't know about this. the carquinez tor benicia bridge had a wind advisory. northbound but both sides of the bridge should get the wind. relatively similar conditions for both sides. interstate 80, the carquinez, watch the cross there and the 680 freeway down through the diablo range. we're looking at slowing that popped up westbound 80 into san pablo. no accidents reported so i'll track that. it may abbunch of folks hitting the roadway. there's the bay bridge with the wind advisory. we have a higher profile vehicle, be careful, hold on tight, lower the speeds. >> play it safe. thank you.

the challenge to the ban on affirmative action. a court will hear arguments. christie smith joins us live from uc-berkeley where students will gather over this lawsuit. >> good morning. there is a lot going on today over education. occupy cal, they have got nine tents out here, they set up last thursday. they want tuition to stop going upment in about two hours another group is coming, they want the ban on affirmative action at public schools thrown out. they are going to gother here, heading to the ninth circuit court of appeals scheduled to hear arguments on overtuning prop 209. it was passed in 1996, it has been challenged but students and advocacy groups giving it another go. they feel that the civil rights of certain minority groups are violated because they represent about half of the high school graduates but only a fraction of

uc admissions. 209 will be defended by the american civil rights institute that argue that all applicants should be treated the same regardless of race or gender. reporting live, christie smith, back to you. >> thank you for that. some concord high school students will protest bathroom restrictions. students at mt. diablo upset. there are five toilets for the girls and two for the boys along with the urinals. even though there are 1400 total students. california law requires more facilities. >> some people go in the bathrooms and smoke weed or do inappropriate stuff. it's unfair for the people who have to use them. >> what do you do?

>>ee personally i just wait till after school. i can go to mcdonald's or something. >> i can't focus in class if i need use the bathroom. >> a trustee said he heard they were closed because of graffiti. we called but so far have not heard back. >> two occupy oakland protesters in trouble. police arrested a woman and a man. the march was mostly peaceful in contrast to the demonstration a couple of weeks ago where protesters broke into buildings. saturday night police arrested a woman after she allegedly kicked an officer in the leg. it was part of a group of 50 people marching. >> crews say they found more human remains in rural san joaquin county at a swrooit a convicted serial killer claims to have dumped his victims.

last week search crews found pieces of a human skull and more won bones in the area. the map provided by wesley shermantine led crews to the area. shermantine and his killing partner lauren herzog are related to as many as 20 killings. among the possible victims michaela garecht. >> a young woman is dead after her car plunged 60 feet off of a highway overpass in concord. it happened near the interchange of highway 242 and 4 sunday afternoon. 25-year-old driver was killed by that impact. chp is trying to figure out how the car ran off. it's designed to deflect cars. >> a bay area deputy is on paid leave after shooting a man. deputies went to a home

yesterday afternoon to serve a search warrant. a man allegedly tried to get away and grab for the deputy's gun. he was shot in the struggle. the man police were looking for was also arrested. >> the golden gate bridge toll takers could be gone by the end of this year. the district announced plans to switch to an all electric system last summer. they were supposed to be eliminated by september. now it appears they will remain until at least december. the new system should be fully operational by february. the change will save if it goes into effect, $16 million over the next decade. >> rain could push bay area construction back a week. the westbound lanes scheduled to close from 8 p.m. fry early sunday. the eastbound lanes will stay open. if it rains the work will be on the 24-26th and we'll of course

keep you updated on closure plans. >> it's 6:08. people in the south bay need to be more cautious driving through school zones. police are launching operation safe passage. this is video from last year's operation. officers will watch for common traffic violationssh speeding, failure to yield and seat belt violators and for students jaywalking and riding a bike without a helmet. >> 6 upon 09. let's check in with christina loren. >> it's going to go much similar to what we're seeing now. we've got light patchy showers. we typically dry out the second half of the day. today this area of low pressure is so widespread that it will continue to pump the light

scattered showers through the bay area. basically all day long and into this evening. you can see we do have light showers pushing along the peninsula. we're getting a raek but as we head throughout day this will be the overall trend. in the city you can see the bay view district snik, 101 to 80. getting pretty wet at this point. in addition we expect dense fog once the winds relax and are starting to do so as we speak. we'll be tracking visibilities all morning. here you can see san mateo had a pretty good batch of moisture, belmont as well. showers on the way to redwood city, campbell getting wet. san jose getting a dry break. by noon, mid-50s. up to 57 inland. cool all day. keep that jacket with you. i'll let you know what you can

expect for valentine's day and we've got more rain on the seven-day. first let's check your drive with mike inouye. >> we found out the reason for the slowing for the east shore freeway. westbound 80 at hill top drive, all rights of an accident. and also potentially a car fire. if there is smoke or flames it's going to be a distraction. that's what we see, a slowing drive as you approach all the way pass, then clearing to richmond and then workly. we have the wind advisory. ach that span over the water. they share some of the same air up there. looking at highway 4. over to somersville and we'll get a live look and see the south bay, the volume picking up 101 northbound by the airport. back to you. >> thank you, mike.

today some family members are gathering at a local church near the crash site. 17 people have been confirmed dead since the "costa concordia" wrecked off of the italian coast. 15 are still missing. the monumental job of pumping out the 500,000 gallons of fuel is under way. that is expected to take weeks to complete. from italy to greece where the debt crisis means a major cleanup in the streets. workers cleaning up the damage left behind by hundreds of anti-austerity protesters. athens is the hardest hit city. dozens of buildings and businesses trashed, some set on fire. more than 100 are hurt. the rioters are hurt over a new round of cost cutting measures passed over the weekend. in the state of washington, it's the day supporters of gay marriage have been waiting for. washington's governor is expected to sign legislation legalizing same-sex marriages.

lawmakers officially approved the bill last week but opponents say they will fight repeal it. the governor is set to sign this into law at 7:30 this morning, barring delays it will go into effect in june. >> thank you for all of the updates. >> checking in with meteorologist christina loren. >> getting a little more active at this point. good morning to you. let's take to the your live doppler radar. you can see slick conditions out there and the moisture right now is moving through very quickly. so you may walk out your front door, it's dry but look at how quick the showers are racing south. the activity at this point is starting to ramp up. just to the north we have a good batch of rain moving toward san who sigh. you'll get slick in san jose again on top of the wet roadways. as we head out the next 10 to 15 minutes. you can see the san mateo bridge getting wet. campbell you had showers. and like i said, san jose, you

are next. another round of rain over the south bay. 9:00 a.m., you can see we stop on futurecast. light activity moving into the south bay by noon still the lingering snow there to the north of it san jose. the south bay we'll see most of the action throughout the day. we're not expecting impressive totals. by 6:00 p.m. starting to get clear skies, clearing up here at 6:00 p.m. mostly cloudy, though, down from san francisco to san jose. we'll clear up as well as we head throughout the diet. limited sunshine and a breeze. 55 degrees in concord, 54 degrees in fremont and of course we've got your valentine's day forecast ready to go. inland and bayside tomorrow at 3:00 p.m., 58 degrees. at night about 52 at 8:00 p.m. as you make your way out for any

evening reservations. good news is the rain showers will have stopped. you don't have to worry about dodging showers. as we head through the weekend temperatures on the mild side. we get another round ever rain saturday into sunday. i do believe if it does come down to any moisture i think they will have to postpone that construction, mike. it does look like we're going to get light showers saturday and sunday and mostly right around the bay bridge. >> all right. we'll follow that f there is rain we'll be having to put off the construction. we'll look at the south bay which has had rain overnight. 880 shows slowing southbound. a watch of slowing, we'll have the sensor up there over the last 15 minutes. south an 80 past the airport as well. that may be an indication of an

early commute. 101 we're up through redwood city. southbound moving smooth from the city through san mateo and menlo park. slick roads. we had rain through daily city. we see a smooth flow but look at that. the backup forming in some of the cash lanes. the metering lights should be turned on. that may be why we're seeing the backup. we'll track this. but on the atech our maps. the freeways look nice on the approach with the wind advisory also an issue for the span. getting there a problem out of rodeo, the earlier accident still there at hill top drive. look at all of that slow driving. back to you. >> mike, thank you. president obama delivers his

2013 budget to congress today. it seeks to trim $4 trillion over the next decade. republicans already insisting this will not work. they have a different idea. they want no new taxes and more cuts to medicare to pay for extending the tax role cut. >> then you're accelerating the bankruptcy of social security. >> the budget cuts not expected to pass before the new budget year begins. come this october. >> the cause of whitney houston's death might not be known nor months. the autopsy is complete but it the coroner's office, pending toxicology results. family members have been told houston did not drown. her pod was found in the bathtub of her hotel.

♪ >> welcome back everyone. 6:24 now. good monday morning to you. san francisco is again considering a crackdown on party buses. new regulations could be in the works after a bus driver spotted a gun in a passenger's bag on new year's eve. the driver called police and the man was arrested. the state is also trying to impose new regulations to prevent underage drinking and drunk driving once patrons exit the buses. >> caltrans holding an open house on plans to relieve traffic congestion on a busy stretch of 880.

6:30 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm jon kelley. we check in again with meteorologist christina loren to see what this forecast today and the rest of the week. we have a holiday tomorrow. >> kind of cool and cloudy for us and this morning we're actually tracking pretty good looking showers on the radar. the activity is really ramped up over the past half hour. milpitas, you're getting some showers, a good batch of rain. now we'll track these for you. we'll let you know when they are expected to clear and more rain on the way as we head throughout this week. your seven-day forecast ready to go first. let's check your drive at 6:31. >> good note. the rain coming into the south bay as the traffic starts hitting the south bay as well. we're following this east bay. we have the accident still westbound 80 at hill top drive. earlier car fire should be out now but a good distraction and slowing off of the carquinez bridge down to hill top drive. wind advisory for the benicia

francisco where the court will hear a complaint over prop 209. california voters passed that in 1996, but student groups and other opponents feel the time is right to challenge it again. they say the ban violates the civil rights of black, latino and native american student who is make up half of the graduates but far fewer admissions into the zem. the american civil rights institute is fighting to keep 209 in place. they are arguing that race and gender should not be a factor in admissions at all. the court expects to hear that in san francisco at 9:00 this morning. reporting live at uc-berkeley, back to you. >> thank you, christie. it is 6:33 now. some high school students in concord say they need a bathroom break. students at mt. diablo protest that most of the bathrooms are locked during school hours. five for girls, two for boys are open on a campus of 1400

charges against her husband and has refused to talk to investigators. prosecutors say he bruised his wife's arm in their home on new you've's eve. >> a homecoming of sorts in san francisco. aids activists welcoming the largest showing of the aids memorial quilt in more than a decade. sections of the quilt wilt be on display at five san francisco locations. it's free to see but donations are always welcome. this is made up of more than 44,000 panels representing some of the millions of people who died of aids. >> pretty sad to see. so personal as well. 6:35. time to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. going to look for hair cover today. >> you want to keep something handy to protect your hair from those showers throughout the day today. we're going to see light on and

off showers probably through about noon, then we'll start to wind down between noon and 3:00. still lingering activity later on this afternoon and this evening. by about 6:00 to 7:00 we'll clear up. you can see light showers racing to the south. san jose, yeah, the best end getting on the slick side. count on slick conditions as you wake up and make your way out the front door. santa clara, moderate rain headed your way. up through the peninsula, atherton getting rain, menlo park getting showers. right now i want to point out the trend is in the south bay we're seeing clearing in the north bay so it's rather light from novato, you might find slick conditions. we expect fog but the next few hours as well. most of the action down in the south bay continues through 1:00 p.m. then later on this evening

mostly cloudy at 6 as you start to make your way home. temperatures will be on the mild side. not warm. 56 in redwood city, 53 in san jose. we'll warm up a little toward the end of the week. we get more rain. 6:37. let's check your drive. >> i kind of snuck a look at your maps, we saw the rain. i wanted to show folks that same traffic flow through the area. menlo park, 101 does show a little bit of slowing. the dumbarton bridge. we're looking at a small drive into the south bay. that rain coming through into san jose. slowing for 87 and 101, curtner, highway 87 and actually into downtown. big slowing, west 88 hill top drive. a lot of distraction and slow.

15 minutes, right now we're going to check in with a live shot. >> so many are talking about the death of famous singer whitney houston over the weekend. we want to go to gina kim live with the laits from coroner's office. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yes, that is right, the l.a. county coroner's office has spoke been this but they may as well not have, they can't release hardly any information about this until they get toxicology back and that could take six to eight weeks. it could be two months before we learn about the cause of death regarding whitney houston. they did manage to finish the autopsy yesterday, but they said they released a little bit of information about that to the family. nothing to the public until the police department and they are able to threat investigation. in fact, the beverly hills

back in with meteorologist christina loren to find out about the weather. a little wet, a little funky today. >> yeah, nothing you want to deal with on a monday morning. give yourself plenty of time and that way it won't be so bad once you do hit the slick conditions. you can see from this live picture over the bay bridge, the camera has a shake to it. it's breezy though the winds are dying down a touch. and it is mostly cloudy. overcast condition all the way from the coast. let's take it to the radar, show you where the showers are coming down at this point. most of the activity must be in the south bay. most of the activity will be south of the golden gate bridge. you can see getting pretty good showers all the way from elgranada to fremont. san jose, you're getting slick as well. those are moderate rain showers coming down over portions of the south bay. menlo park a little break but more rain developing offshore here that will move onshore through the next hour or two. in fact, we'll see light

scattered showers throughout the day but we're not expecting much in terms of accumulation. look at these unimpressive expected totals. san jose, .03 inch. that's about it today. nonetheless, the showers will purify our air which is good news. good air qualls for all of you lovers for valentine's day. 55 in concord. across the water. 54 in san francisco and 50 degrees in bodega bay. it works like this tomorrow. if you want to have a morning brunch, 48 degrees, you'll need the jacket all day. by moon, up to about 57 so looking warmer tomorrow by about 3 to 5 degrees from today's highs. and then for you late night rendezvous people, 53 degrees. make sure you bring your shawl or a jacket with you, ladies, but leave the umbrella home. a little fog tomorrow, another round of rain wednesday into thursday. by friday sun and clouds will make way to showers in the north bay.

we have a pretty promising chance for showers not just saturday but sunday as well over the bay bridge. i would not be shocked if they postpone that construction. mike, back to you. >> so yeah, we're waiting for caltrans to update us. watching the bay bridge, the current now, the accident going on for westbound 580 at hacie a hacienda. that's causing slowing. big slowing through livermore into polileasanton. another cluster of cars now slowing down south of pleasanton and to sunol. 680 slowing for the 30s coming down into fremont. through the entire area past the gulf course. may get rain coming in. 680, prepare for more slowing. throughout the south bay, 85, highway 87. 101 from capital to the airport.
