outdoors. 5:00 a.m. first. mike is a busy man. >> good morning. we're busy warning about changes going on later today. for example, the bay bridge toll plaza which is moving smoothly now taking you from oakland into san francisco, not available after 8:00 p.m. tonight. that over the weekend constructi construction. i'll show you an alternate, the san mateo bridge, 880 likely to get more traffic as folks travel to 92 and off to the right, the sign that the bay bridge does close. we'll talk about that and more about traffic in a few. >> right now we're talking about the president. his whirl wind stop in san francisco brought in big bucks. bob is live at the intercontinental hotel where the president spent the night. how did the president make out? >> reporter: for january there is new information coming out. good morning, that the president raised $29 million for his re-election campaign and the democratic party.

that's an increase in the pace of fundraising. for the month of february he's getting a lot of help from the atm that is san francisco, yesterday alone he raised $3 million during three fundraising events here in the city. two were closed to the public. for the third, almost 3,000 people paid at least $100 to hear and see the president speak at the masonic center. obama spoke of the need to help those struggling in this tough economy, that this time in america is a make or break for the middle class. >> work and fair play and shared responsibility, that is what we're fighting for. that's what is at stake in this election. >> reporter: security escorted out two people who heckled the president over his policies regarding oil drilling and this country's involvement in afghanistan and pakistan. the president acknowledged that this is san francisco after all. we're live out here at fourth

and whoward. much of this area is blocked off f. you have business in this part of the city. he doesn't leave until late morning, his motorcade could cause traffic problems on southbound 101, this would be roughly between 11:30 and noon as he heads to sfo to take air force one for a take-off to seattle where he has another fund-raiser. reporting live in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> the president's first order of business when he got to san francisco, of course grabbing a bite to eat. the president, you might say, went rogue making an unannounced stop in chinatown. he had the sleeves rolled up, no jacket when he stopped by the great eastern restaurant on jackson street to pick up his take-out order of, get this, dimsong. look at this. sharing the love. customers did chant the president's name as they got close to him, take pictures and

look good for their friends. >> police in oakland looking for the man who tried to sexually assault a woman at knife point. she says a man attacked as she enter add home on east tenth street. even though he was armed she says her screams scared the man away. >> oakland police are offering safety tips. be aware, don't be distracted, stay in well-lit populated areas especially be alert getting in and out of your car. lock your doors. if you see something suspicious call police. >> a bay area high school planning to use drug sniffing dogs on campus. newark memorial says the dogs will be brought in when students return from spring break in april. the district telling the news kroop it's trying to curb drug use and sales on campus and may extend that to other school this works. fremont schools asking parents for feedback whether to bring

drug sniffing dogs onto their campuses. police will not move forward unless it gets support. >> it is not drug sniffing dogs but surveillance cameras that may watch. lafayette district is looking into a pilot program to put cameras in. the district has seen a rash of lap top, comer wire and solar panel thefts. the district is trying to decide if the cameras are worth the $16,000 price tag. >> our president is here in the bay area, another country is without one altogether. germany's president suddenly resigned. marla tellez is live in our newsroom with the latest headlines. good morning. >> good morning. after less than two years on the job german president christian wolf has resigned. he told reporters in berlin germany needs a president supported by its citizens. wolf is currently in the midst of a scandal over favors he

allegedly received before becoming head of state. he is confident he will be cleared of wrong doing. >> and southern greece today police are searching for two masked and armed thieves who robbed the antiquities museum. officials say the men tied up a guard, smashed display cases and stole about 60 artifacts. just last month three works of art including a piece by picasso were stolen from the national gallery in athens. to southern california, federal investigators are trying to piece together the shoot-out that left an immigration and customs enforcement agent dead. the shooting happened in the federal building in long beach last night. "l.a. times" is reporting an ice agent got into some sort of a confrontation with one of his supervisors and shot him. that's when another agent shot the ice agent who originally fired. he was pronounced dead on the scene. the wounded supervisor is in the hospital this morning, said to

be in stable condition. >> it is 5:06. hundreds of students are getting shocking news after the state shuts down their school. the doors were locked at the institute of medical education earlier this week. state regulators say it has questions about the school's finances and accreditation. students at the campuses say they are stunned and trying to look for answers. regulators say tuition and loans may be reimbursed but the credits may not transfer. the school says it may go to court to fight the closure. >> one of the biggest water wars in bay area history reaching a boiling point now. we're talking about the fight to close the hedge hetchy reservoir. opponents work on a ballot measure to drain the reservoir. the san francisco examiner reporting the group plans to file paperwork next week to begin a signature gathering effort to try to put the measure on the november ballot. it would ask voters to approve

the process and return the valley to its natural state. >> recent snow in the sierra nevada couldn't have come at a better time. 18 inches have fallen on most tahoe resorts. while the ski conditions aren't great it's better than you think. resorts are making some snow daily. making the conditions ideal. >> meteorologist christina loren joins us in the weather center. let's find out if the snow is going to affect us here. >> you know, we're going to get a little more as we head through this holiday weekend. good morning to you. the technology for making that snow, it advances year by year as well so they are able to make more snow than they were about five years ago. it's pretty cool up there. temperature this is morning cold here in the bay area, 36 degrees in fair field. 41 degrees, chilly enough for a jacket but something you want to take off by about noon as our high temperatures are going to end up in the mid to upper 60s.

picture of the golden gate bridge no fog to report at this point. we could see a little fog develop and that would likely be in the livermore area, also concord, some of the fog creeps in through the delta. throughout the morning hours temperatures will stay on the cool side until about noon. high pressure regains control. in the mid-60s. through this weekend things change, an area of low pressure moves in. it's going to bring in a pretty weak cold front. for us that means cooler conditions, it will be mostly cloudy as we head through this weekend so we're going to lose that sun that we rounded out the the work week with. beautiful yesterday and even warmer as we head through your friday. 67 degrees in san jose. and guess what else, our boys are back in scottsdale starting tomorrow. pitchers and catchers, the giants are back at scottsdale stadium. 71 degrees. the first preseason game is march 3 versus the diamondbacks. we're excited.

the dow gained 123 points to 12,904, nearing the key symbolic level of 13,000. the nasdaq up 44 points to 2959, close to 3000. the s&p up 14 to end at 1358. treasury secretary tim geithner facing a subpoena from lehman brothers. they want to question him about transactions made before the collapse of the firm in 2008. it's suggested that jpmorgan chase mate have used inside information to siphon billions during the final days. secretary geithner obviously was the head of the new york fed at the time and brokered a lot of meetings between bank executives. lawyers want to force a deposition by the march 16th deadline. yelp will be added to the new york stock exchange under yelp. the service plans to sell as much as $100 million of stock. it aims to sell 7 million shares

priced between 12 and $14. so the ipo market we're all waiting for that big facebook one. but the market starting to heat up a little. back to you. >> we'll keep our eye on it. thank you. >> the california sea otter facing a growing threat. specifically, shark attacks. the reason still a mystery to scientists. the number of sea otters killed by sharks has soared in recent years. great whites are the main suspects and the mid 90s about 10% of dead sea otters along the coast had shark bites. today the number is about 30%. scientists say shark attacks now the largest hurdle to sea otters' recovery from the endangered species list. >> real life police corruption scandal becomes reality tv. the dr. phil show will feature the officer turned private eye accused in a spring of arrests. dr. phil will discuss the charges of fraud, entrapment and drug dealing facing chris

>> welcome back everyone. it is the terrifying story of a group of bay area fishermen lost at sea after their boat sank and this weekend it will be featured on television. two survivors of the sinking last july will tell their story on the biography channel's i survived it will air sunday. the boat went down during a freak storm off baja california. of the 27 people on the fishing boat, erik, one person was killed, seven others listed as missing. >> 5:24. the oakland a's may have found their newest designated hitter. the a's may sign 39-year-old manny ramirez just before or after spring training starts this weekend. the down side, ramirez has a 50-game suspension for violating the major league's drug policy. fox sports says he can play in spring training games, it

woulding allowed to work without the team during the regular season but he would have to leave the ball paar park before the gates open for any games. >> huge protests expected this morning in berkeley at a steel plant. scott mcgrew joining us. more than 200 people lost their jobs. >> the federal government would say they lost their jobs for a good reason, they were in the country illegally or at least they couldn't prove their citizenship. video from last year shortly after 200 workers found they would not be allowed back to work at pacific steel. this morning they plan to gather outside the nation's fourth largest foundry to show their anger. they tell nbc bay area they worked under what they claimed were bad conditions but couldn't do anything about it because they were undocumented workers, and then they lost their jobs because they were undocumented workers. they don't expect to get their jobs back, in fact, under the law there's no way that they can. >> another stock analyst has been arrested by the fbi, he says for doing his job too well.

he will try to figure out what apple and cisco were doing and then report that back to his investors. he apparently did that so well the fbi got involved. 60 people from california to new york city have been accused of insider trading. we don't know precisely what charges he faces but the indictment there sealed. >> you'll be getting faster wireless internet. you can thank congress. the two houses hammered outdeal that will allow the sale of frequencies once used by tv stations for wireless internet. this has been a plan for years and years but congress finally got motivated to get it done because it needed the money. you'll remember earlier this week congress extended both the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits, this will save the average american about 40 bucks a paycheck but it's going to cost 143 billion. republicans say they wouldn't pass it without a way to pay for it. they found it. they are going to sell off the

we'll talk you through all of that. first, 5:30 a.m. let's see if anything is slowing you down. >> a lot going on, things are moving smoothly. the golden gate bridge is going to get more crowded as folks are using this and the richmond/san rafael bridge as one of the alternates to the bay bridge. another, the san mateo bridge, a smooth drive westbound with taillights away from us, over to the peninsula, on the right side, the sign says the bay bridge is closed. we kind of knew that, we have been talking about it. we've got our own christie smith out there. my friend and colleague talking about that closure. what do you have today? >> reporter: good morning to you, mike. happy friday. you know, we're standing between the toll plaza and the incline where the work is going to take place. caltrans has some trucks ready to get started at 8:00 tonight when the upper deck of the bay bridge shuts down for three days. we shot video from the oakland side. caltrans has message boards up

reminding people. i got off the phone with our own photographer rob hughes who tell me it's the same story up 101. the word is out there. the only wrench in the plans could be the weather. rain. they need to the stay dry for at least six to seven hours for the paint to dry. and the new lane configuration. here is the plan. >> the reason why we're doing that so that we can shift traffic to the south over on the oakland side of the bridge. a piece of the existing bridge is in the way of the new bridge that we're building, so by moving the traffic a little to the south we can surgically remove that piece and build out the rest of the new bridge. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. will run 24 hours a day to help you get around. they have been handing out flyers at a number of stations for two weeks. and bay area ferries will have expanded service. buses can get you to and from the west oakland b.a.r.t.

lodge which is also accused of allowing prostitution. >> a new fight between apple and google. scott mcgrew joins us. those companies used to get along. >> they used to share a board member until google got in the steve business and steve jobs said he would spend every last pen tee destroy google. google has been accused this morning of monkeying with apple's safari web browser, fooling it into letting google track web user surfing habits. safari is popular on the iphone. and the particulars here are extremely technical. so i'm not going to get into them but google denies this. bottom line, another big fight brewing between mountainview and cupertino that will probably end up in the courts, even worse will probably attract the attention of federal regulators as well.

up totaling about 50 billion more than that, for shovel ready projects that the president said would create jobs, to try to stimulate this economy and for benefits like unemployment. did it work? it depends who you ask. president obama on the road in san francisco yesterday said the economy is stronger t recovery is accelerating but mitt romney said not because we spentstimul says the president will be blamed for and remember forward making this recovery longer for postponing it. the bottom line when you look at the numbers, unemployment about the same as it was then. but we've come out of a big slump that was near 10%. interestingly, we were losing three quarters of a million jobs a month back then. now gaining a quarter million so a big turnaround there. the big sque going to be what impact is all of this going to have on politics as republicans continue to try to focus on the

will be brought to san joaquin county where the searchers are scouring an abandoned cattle ranch for more victims of killers. a powerful camera will be lowered into the 50-foot well where more than 1,000 bone fragments have been found. cadaver dogs will be used to search for a second well where two dumped more bodies. some of the fragments will be analyzed at the crime lab in richmond. >> she was at the center of that controversy pepper spray incident at uc davis. the chancellor will be the subject of a faculty no confidence vote. she was heavily criticized for the university's handling of a peaceful protest back in november. occupiers were staging a sit-in when this happened. campus police aggressively and repeatedly spraying them with pepper spray. out of control. today's vote nonbinding but

outside of happy hollow once belonged to one of san jose's pioneer families. it sustained major damage after a two-alarm fire yesterday. the two-story home has been vacant for years but was used to store historic documents. some of those fortunately were able to be saved. there were no reports of injuries. >> a man who was paid to clean up one of the bay area's company tried to clean them out allegedly. the 33-year-old allegedly stole 41 lap top computers. prosecutors say he took the computers between february 2011 and last week while he was working for the company as a contract janitor. the total cost of the computers about $30,000. he is out on bail. >> dozens of musicians honor the san francisco business man who's free music festival brought blue
