if it's humanly possible to have a crush on a day of the week, fall in love with this one. it's friday, february 17th, "today in the bay." >> turns into a different vibe on a friday morning. thanks for joining us. 6:00 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning everyone. i'm jon kelley. we check back in with meteorologist christina loren to find out about a spectacular day on the wing. >> warmest of the week as a matter of fact. a little warmer than yesterday and yesterday was spectacular. lots of sunshine. breezy conditions. nice and clear. things start to change, we get showers, starting tomorrow morning. we'll time those out for your city coming up. first, mike is a busy man on a usually get away friday. >> you know, the volume of traffic now relatively light but yeah, looking ahead a lot to warn folks about. we have the san mateo bridge looking fine now, westbound with the taillights, the peninsula

from the east bay. we'll look at the golden gate bridge out of the north bay. both of those bridges will be involved as an alternate. the closure of the bay bridge. we'll talk about that. but into the city, once you're in tehepe wre have the presiden in town. bob is out there. this might impact the morning commute, right? >> reporter: it's expected to. good morning. here at fourth and howard here in downtown san francisco, president obama has been staying overnight. it's our understanding that around 8:30 his motorcade will leave here, likely heading south on 101 to get to sfo to catch a 9:00 flight on air force one. so you're looking at between 8:30 and 9:00, southbound 101, the presidential motorcade being there. you might want to plan accordingly if you have business on the peninsula. he's been in town wrapping up what has been apparently a very success furthermore fundraising trip, raised $3 million during three fundraising events in san francisco. two were closed to the public. for the third, almost 3,000

people paid at least $100 to see him speak at the masonic center on top of nob hill. obama spoke of the need to help those struggling in this tough economy, that this time in america is make or break for the middle class. >> hard work and fair play and shared responsibility, that is what we're fighting for. that's what is at stake in this election. >> reporter: security had to escort out two people who heckled the president during the speech over policies regarding oil drilling and the country's involvement in afghanistan and pakistan. reporting live here in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> well, the real traffic headache for the bay area could come later today when the westbound lanes of the bay bridge will be shut down. it is all part of the caltrans construction plan for the new span. we tried to warn you all week. christie smith is live on the bay bridge, the latest on the

closure coming up. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. happy friday. we're so used to seeing the upper deck of the bay bridge packed with traffic that it's odd when there's no cars on it but that's going to be the case at 8:00 tonight when only construction crews are out here working on the approach to the new eastern span of the bay bridge. we have new animation for you this morning which shows the work that's going to be happening between the toll plaza and the incline on the westbound direction. eastbound will remain open. caltrans needs to reconfigure the lanes, basically shifting them south so. crews have built an extension along with a new section of roadway. they will demolish a piece of the old bridge in the way of new oakland landing. the only curveball for the project could be the weather. >> compared to what we've done in the past it's not that difficult. the challenge for us is going to westbound the weather. because a lot of these operations, the paving and the

painting are weather dependent. if we have sustained rain over the weekend it could delay us. >> reporter: during this closure b.a.r.t. will run 24 hours a day to help you get in and out of the city. that lane striping that he mentioned needs about 6-7 hours of dry weather to work out. if it doesn't we could see a delay in the project. certainly let's hope not. if all goes as planned, though, the upper deck will reopen at 5:00 a.m. tuesday morning. reporting live near the bay bridge, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> police in oakland this morning looking for a man who tried to sexually assault a woman at knife point. she says the man attacked her on valentine's day as she entered her home on east tenth street near tulagi. though he was armed, she says her screams did manage to scare the man away. oakland police offering simple safety tips. be aware of your surroundings, do not be distracted by cell phones. stay in well lit populated areas

especially be alert when getting in and out of your car. lock your door, after getting in, and if you see something suspicious, make sure to call police. >> 6:04 now. another bay area high school is planning to use drug sniffing dogs -- newark memorial says the dogs will be brought in when students return from spring break in april. the district tells the bay city news group it's trying to curb drug use and sales on campus. in the meantime, fremont schools are asking parents for feedback whether to bring drug sniffing dogs onto campus. they will not move forward unless they get support for the plan. >> surveillance cameras may be watching students at some east bay schools. the lafayette school district looking into a pilot program now to put cameras at lafayette elementary and stanley middle schools there. according to the contra costa times the district has seen a

rash of thefts over the past year. the district trying to decide if the cameras are worth the $16,000 price tag. >> hundreds of students getting shocking news after the state shut down their college. doors were locked at the institute of medical education. state regulators say they have questions about the school finances and accreditation. students at the campuses say they were stunned and are still looking for answers. regulators say tuition and loans may be reimbursed but the credits may not transfer. the school may go to court to fight the closure. >> one of the biggest water wars reaching a boiling point. we're talking about the fight to close a reservoir. opponents of the water source working on a ballot measure to drain the reservoir. the the group plans to file paperwork next tweak begin a signature gathering effort to try to put the measure on the

november ballot. it would ask to approve a process to eventually remove the dam in the reservoir, returning the valley to its natural state. >> it's that time when the latest vintages of wine go head to head or bot tool bottle. you can be the judge at the largest wine competition in the country. this year's wine competition features more than 5,000 wines from 25 states. tomorrow is public tasting day in san francisco. that event runs from 2:00 to 5:00. tickets are $80 at the door, $60 if you buy them in advance. >> sounds like a good event. maybe have to check that out. 5,000 bottles of wine. we like the sound of the weather. meteorologist christina loren is serving up the good vibrations. >> right we're cooking it up warm on a friday. good morning. it's a little chilly but this will be the warmest day of the week. plenty of sunshine this afternoon and what fog is trying

to develop out there is really light and we're only dropping off in terms of visibility up in santa rosa you've got about eight miles so we're looking good in that department. mild and breezy, clouds increase later on so we're going to lose that full on sunny sky by about noon and we'll continue to get a few more clouds throughout this afternoon. we have a few showers in your seven-day forecast followed by a big time warm-up. so a little bit of something for everybody in your forecast which i'll get to in my next report. first through your day in detail. 62 by noon, up to 64 at 4:00 p.m. as you make your way home. at the bay cooler up to 58 by noon so holding on to conditions that are warmer than our averages until tomorrow. things start to change. we'll talk you through those changes, help you plan your outdoor activity for the weekend. first let's check your drive with mike inouye. >> we have reports of a fire, a smaller car fire down by the gilroy truck scales, the

inspection facility so. a note for folks out of morgan hill and toward 152. if you're trying to get an early start heading to l.a., a lot of folks take 101 or cut over on i-5. that would be your route. we had a couple of lanes blocked for a period of time. sounds like at least two lanes are open. but we'll follow this carefully. your northbound routes out of morgan hill into san jose show highway 87, there shows a slowdown, this time in both directions. no construction scheduled right now and no incidents but again we see the slowing on the sensors, i want to point it out. we have friend goesing through the area. let me know what they see. we'll get a live look and see how things are shaping up. 880 past the coliseum. southbound traffic going to get heavier as folks head away from the bay bridge.

>> it was nothing short of a bizarre shootout in a federal building in southern california. this morning investigators saying this one was an isolated incident. marla tellez is following this story, she joins us with exactly what happened here. good morning. >> good morning. still so many unanswered

questions surrounding what's being called a case of workplace violence involving a couple federal agents. this morning the fbi is working with the long beach police department to try to piece the puzzle together. it was about 5:30 last night when an agency shot a supervisor on the seventh floor of the glenn m. anderson building in long beach. we're learning the ice agent fired several rounds. a late night fbi press conference at the scene helps explain what happened next. >> at that time when that incident occurred, another agent working nearby intervened and fired his weapon to prevent additional rounds being fired at the victim. this resulted in the death of the shooter. >> the good news is the supervisor survived and is in stable condition this morning. the names of the agents, though, are not being released because family has yet to be notified. this morning the question is what set off the agent in the first place. that's where officials are

focusing their investigation today. >> thank you, marla. recent snow in the sierra couldn't have come at a better time. 18 inches has fallen this week while the ski conditions aren't great it's better than you think. some snow better than no snow. resorts are making some of the snow throughout just in time to welcome presidents day weekend skiers and snowboarders. no doubt the road to tahoe will be busy. >> snow in the sierra, the real and the fake stuff. here it sounds like 70 degrees. >> 70 degrees, then showers tomorrow. and then next week, here is a preview for you. even warmer. we could be talking mid 70s by next thursday. so, enjoy the brief showers that we do get over the weekend. we have something for everybody, overall, quiet weather. we don't have major storms in the pacific that we're looking at. at least for the next 10 to 15 days. 42 in san jose.

good morning to you there. 37 in livermore. on the cool side. we're going to see comfortable conditions as high pressure is in control of our pattern. pumping the winds from land to sea for the first part of the day, keeping the coast clear, and that means we'll see the mid to upper 60s. on the breezy side through the east bay hills. then tonight an area of low pressure crosses to our north, a weak disturbance with it. enough to increase that onshore flow bringing a foggy start saturday. cloudy for the most part saturday afternoon. a few showers as we wake up tomorrow morning. another round of rain late sunday into monday. it works out like this. enjoy the sunshine and 70s today. 70 in fairfield. about 70 degrees in gilroy. and 67 in san jose. not as warm as scottsdale where our baseball is back. our giants back in scottsdale as of tomorrow, spring training begins. pitchers and catchers reporting for duty. it will be on the warm side, about 71 degrees. so excited about the upcoming

season here at nbc bay area. there are showers this weekend. a little warmer as we head to wednesday and thursday. the climb is on. let's check your drive with mike. >> south bay, i've been watching this, the slowdown on 87. both directions for the last ten minutes. let's get a live look. we see a steady flow but no big issues. the volume is picking up. that might have caused the sensors to readjust. headlights moving around 55 to 60 miles per hour. back to the map, we'll show you how things are for the rest of the south bay a. flow for 101 up through san jose into mountain view past the -- and the shoreline, the earlier construction has cleared so no problems now along the lower shore or the peninsula route. smooth drive past sfo down to sfo out of the city later on today as bob's been telling you, the presidential motorcade

likely or possible. you see signs warning you. the san mateo bridge, 92 westbound after 8:00 p.m., one of your alternates to the bay bridge which will close at 8:00 p.m. tonight. through the castro valley y, and down to the san mateo bridge as well. and out of the altamont pass speeds continuing to slow a bit so an 18-minute drive averaging about 50 to 55 all the way through livermore and now blips around the isabelle interchange and the dublin interchange but no big deals for folks here. we'll send it back to you. >> mike, thank you. this one is shaping up to be a very emotional celebration of life. aretha franklin and stevie wond der among those who will sing at the funeral. also at the funeral her ex-husband bobby brown, and oprah winfrey. houston's mentor clive davis will speak at saturday's

funeral. aretha franklin tells the "today" show the morning tomorrow will be very tough. >> one of the last things she sung was "yes jesus loves me." and when god loves you, what can be better than that. >> you can catch that full interview this morning on the "today" show. we'll have a link to watch the funeral live on our website, nbcbayarea.com. >> mexican president calderon is telling the u.s. to stop the flow of guns into his country. he thinks that drug cartels are arming themselves with guns bought in the u.s. mexican agents have found tens of thousands of guns. the mexican president launched an offensive in 2006. since then some 50,000 people have died in drug-related violence in mexico.

>> an airline goes out of business overnight and it strands thousands of people including several americans. air australia grounded its five-jet fleet after it ran out of money. it filed for the equivalent of chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. that doesn't help the 4,000 stranded. >> coming up a theater getting new life. we're going to tell you how. whatcha lookin' for hon?

>> welcome back. a live look outside overlooking sfo this morning. president obama in san francisco waking up in the bay area this morning. no doubt we will see his motorcade later this morning. we're going to keep tabs to see if it will affect the morning commute. 6:22. >> speaking ever san francisco, the city's mission theater getting an all inmakeover. the historic preservation committee approving a plan to allow an austin owner renovate it into a five-screen multiplex. it will be alamo draft house. it serves alcohol and food and is famous for zero tolerance policy for using cell phones during movies. you're not supposed to do that. the theater was built in 1916 and closed in 1993. >> a san francisco business man is trying to help seattle get a new arena. hedge fund manager christopher

hanson is offering $290 million to build an arena on a lot near the mariners ballpark. seattle's mayor made the announcement yesterday. the plan is to return an nba franchise to the city. reports out of sacramento say the kings could be the team. >> investors giving five stars to yelp as it gets ready for an ipo. scott, a long road for yelp. >> it has been. yelp is one of those companies accused of intimidating small businesses, all of those court cases were thrown out by a judge recently. this clears the way for yelp to begin its ipo filed back in november. we now know that march 1 is the date for yelp, they will price around $15 a share. it is an exciting time for that company. another stock analyst has been arrested by the fbi, he says for doing his job too well. john kanucan says he tried to

figure out what apple an cisco were doing and pass that information on. perhaps too well. it's the latest involving more than 60 people from california to new york city in a huge ring accused of insider trading. we don't know what charges mr. kinnucan was facing. the dow 30 industrials will start the day at their highest level in nearly four years after a 123.rally on thursday. we got more good news about jobs. the fewest new jobless claims in several years. we got good news about greece and the expectation that the european union will bail out that country. greeks did not react to the end of the bargain well. they have to cut back on pensions and other government benefits. you know the guy complaining about europeans getting seven weeks vacation and then you see that video of fire bombs, that's how that works out in the end.

we'll talk about when showers return. let's see how busy mike is. >> not as busy as the figures at the bay bridge. metering lights turned on a few minutes ago so. a gradual build at the toll plaza. big changes tonight as it closes at 8:00. christie smith will talk about that. a look at the golden gate bridge into the city, a smooth drive here as well. golden gate bridge off of the richmond/san rafael bridge another of the alternates to get around. this morning into the city is the issue and through the city, our own bob redell is out there. we have a presidential visit and that may be an issue for the morning commute, right? >> reporter: yes, talking about president obama's motorcade. we're outside intercontinental where he has been staying. in a couple of hours we understand that he will be heading down south on 101 to catch air force one for a 9:00 departure to seattle. if you have a commute up and

down the peninsula between 8:30 and 9:00 in this area. you want to plan accordingly. he is wrapping up a 24-hour fundraising swing through the city of san francisco. thousands of dollars dropped on him for his campaign or re-election. and the president dropping coin here as well. $100 to be exact. the motorcade made a stop at the great eastern restaurant in china town yesterday. surprising the customers and the people who work there. what did the president's $100 buy? enough for 14 people. >> we went for a collection. a mid afternoon snack. yeah. didn't want to have the whole full seven-courser because i've got like five events going on. >> actually it was three events yesterday during which he raised an estimated $3 million. two of the events were closed to

the public. the one last night almost 3,000 showed up paying at least $100 to see him speak. he spoke of the need to help those struggling in a tough economy, that it's make or break for the middle class. security did have to escort out two people heckling the president. the president brushed it off, acknowledging that something to the effect of hey, this is san francisco, after all. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. 6:31 now. later today the barricades will go up in the westbound lanes of the bay bridge. caltrans is shutting it down for the long weekend to do more realignment work for the opening of the new span. christie smith is live with the latest on the closure. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we've been talking about it and talking about it but tonight's the night come 8:00 the upper deck of the bay bridge will be shut down, only caltrans crews

will be out here on the project, the oakland touchdown they call it on the eastern span. what's happening is that a piece of the old bridge is in the way of the new configuration so crews will remove that, put in a new one and move the lanes south between the toll plaza and the incline. one potential flaw could be the weather. lane restriping and other work needs dry weather. some rain is in the forecast. here is caltrans bart may. >> until we complete all of the key parts of the work including connecting the bridge and making sure everybody understands where they are supposed to drive. that's putting the striping in place. we have to finish those operations. >> reporter: word of this closure would be hard to miss. caltrans has signs up at all of the approaches, people have been at b.a.r.t. stations

leafletting. b.a.r.t. will run 24/7 to help you get in and out of the city. the lower deck will be open. while this work is going on. if all goes as planned and the weather cooperates, everything falls into place, the upper deck will reopen at 5:00 on tuesday. >> this long process but we could learn today when the woman accused of killing a student will go to trial. charged with killing her former friend and romantic rival michelle le, le disappeared after leaving kaiser permanente. a hearing is scheduled to set a date for esteban's murder trial. >> cadaver dogs will be brought in where searchers started scouring an abandoned cattle ranch for more victims of the creek killers. a camera will be lowered down into a 50-foot well where more

than a thousand bone fragments have been found. dogs will be used to search for a second well where wesley shermantine says he and loren herzog dumped more bodies. some of the fragments will be analyzed in richmond. >> he says he was doing his job though technically it wasn't his job anymore. michael nasser talking about how he helped snag a trio of bank robbers. the police veteran happened along as the crime went down at a wells fargo bank. nasser was no long area member of the san jose police force. he quit last summer fearing he'd lose his job. >> my initial thought was i wanted to do something, i wish i had this, i wish i had that. give at any situation i was in, i had nothing else better to do but than to be a good witness. >> that's a true cop, right

nasser tracked them to selena where a s.w.a.t. team took over. after a two-hour standoff. there is an even happier result, he is being reinstated. >> the city attorney will go to court to shut down the economy inn on east 12th street. it's one of two motels suspected of allowing even encouraging prostitution in some cases, involving children. the city says the business is a public nuisance and under court order to clean up their act. the effort has failed. now the city attorney is asking the court to shut them down for a year. >> faculty at uc davis taking a vote whether they have confidence in the school's chancellor. she has been criticized for the university's handling of the now infamous pepper spray incident. it was an ugly scene to watch.

>> today is the third anniversary of the stimulus that president obama insisted would bring the u.s. out of recession. nbc bay area's tracie potts live on capitol hill with a look at what we spent and the return. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're going to hear a lot on the campaign trail in washington whether that $787 billion worked. it was after the president took office, most of it for tax breaks but also benefits like extended unemployment benefits that they still are fighting over and the so-called shovel ready projects, road projects that would put people back to work. they ended up spending $50

billion more than that. the difference is that now we have 12 million people still unemployed but the unemployment rate is about the same but we're gaining jobs, a quarter million last month as opposed to the three quarters of a million we lost a month before they passed the sometitimulus. how is this playing on the campaign trail? president obama yesterday in the bay area saying that the economy is stronger, that the recovery is actually accelerating, but mitt romney says the president won't be remembered for the turn around, because it took so long for the economy to recover. live from capitol hill, i'm tracie potts. back to you. >> 6:42. coming up, 15 minutes of uni wanted news include how president observe's morning commute would affect yours. the president's motorcade will head there in about an hour and a half from now. how that could affect you coming

funnel point. folks are back over toward mission boulevard. 880 shows slowing through the area. 880 north past the coliseum, a smooth drive from the coliseum through oakland and downtown. the south bound side, a major alternate for folk this is weekend. they are going to head down to the san mateo bridge so. this area past the coliseum will get more traffic over the course of that closure as well. now, back to you guys. you know what, i'm told we're going to bob redell out in san francisco. bob, you have the president's motorcade to talk about. what's going on? >> reporter: which could affect the morning commute likely will. good morning mike. we're at fourth and howard looking down at the intercontinental hotel where president obama has stayed. he's supposed to leave this location and under two hours, we understand around 8:30 is when the motorcade will head south on 101, that's the likely route. to sfo to catch air force one

for a trip up to seattle. as in the past law enforcement is expected to shut down 101 as he is heading that direction. you do want to plan accordingly. as i mentioned he will catch that plane, looking at a live picture of air force one at sfo. the wheels are supposed to go up at 9:00 a.m. for him to head to seattle for another fund-raiser. here he is wrapping up a fund-raiser here in san francisco, just arrived yesterday, raised an estimated $3 million. again, the president wrapping up his trip. supposed to be leaving around 8:30 from san francisco heading south on 101, so if you have business up and down the peninsula in that area around that time, 8:30, 9:00, you'll want to plan ahead. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> during his visit the president of course energized his supporters last night he was at the masonic center on nob hill where music chris cornell warmed up the audience of 2500 out there.

the lanes will shift south. this is part of the seismic work tied to the new eastern span. part of the old bridge is in the way of the new construction. they are going to remove it and make the reconnection. the only snag could be the weather if we get the rain in the forecast. the lanes will be restriped and it needs time to dry. at least 6-7 hours. b.a.r.t. is going to run 24 hours a day and ferry service is expanded, all the other bridges are open. the upper deck is street open tuesday morning at 5:00 a.m. reporting live at the bay bridge, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> police in oakland looking for the man who tried to sexually assault a woman at knifepoint. it happened on east tenth street near tulagi. oakland police say a woman was attacked as she was trying to go in her hours. anybody who has information is asked to contact the oakland police.

>> and stay safe, police say there are a few simple rules. always be aware of your surroundings, don't be distracted by cell phones or owe electronic devices. stay in well-lit populated areas especially be alert when you get in and out of your car. lock your doors after you get in your car and if you see anything suspicious, call police. >> 6:52 now, another bay area high school planning to use drug sniffing dogs on campus. newark memorial high says the dogs will be brought in when students return from spring break in april. the district tells the news group is trying to curb drug use and sales on campus. they may expand to other schools if it works. the fremont schools are asking parents for feedback on whether to bring drug sniffing dogs onto their campuses. police say they will not move forward until they get support for the plan. >> 6:52. we're getting word a stretch of the mississippi river is shut down all caused by an oil spill. marla tellez is in the newsroom

now to tell us what's happening out there. good morning. >> the u.s. coast guard says an oil tanker barge collided with another barge on the mississippi early this morning. this is all happening west of new orleans. the result is an oil spill but how much oil t coast guard can't say. in the meantime a 5-mile stretch of the mississippi is now closed. to southern california where federal investigators are trying to piece together the shoot the-out that left an agent dead. it happened inside the federal building on the seventh floor in long beach. the "l.a. times" is reporting an ice agent got into some sort of a confrontation with one of his supervisors and then shot him. that's when another agent jumped in and shot the ice agent who originally fired. he died at the scene. the good news is the supervisor is in stable condition. of course today officials are working to figure out the million dollar question, that is

by a judge he could not leave the area. >> the story of a group of bay area fishermen whose boat sank will be told this weekend. two survivors will tell their story on the biography channel "i survived." eight months ago it was a freak storm that sank their boat in the waters off of baja california. of the 27 people on the ship, one person was killed, seven others at this point still listed as missing. many of those rescued were at sea for hours before they were able to be rescued. >> the oakland a's may have found their newest designated hitter. they may sign 39-year-old manny ramirez just before or after spring training starts this weekend. the down side, ramirez has a 50-game suspension for violating the league's drug policy. he can play in spring training and would be allowed to work without the team during regular season but have to leave the ballpark before the gates open
