"today" show poll about whether or not the laptop dad should have shot his daughter's laptop. 73% of the viewers went in one direction. >> we're not to say which direction just yet. coming up, we'll have the results and we think the results will spark even more conversation. we'll fill you in on that. also ahead, some politics. republican presidential hopeful rick santorum is distancing himself today from an off-color joke about contraception made by one of his top donors in a television interview. we'll have details on that. and we are, i think you know, headed into a holiday weekend. a special presidents day whip, a look at the movies you can see and where you can find the best shopping bargains. we begin with breaking news in california. a workplace shooting at the federal building in long beach. nbc's thanh truong has the latest on this. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the shootout at the federal building was between fellow agents with u.s. immigration and

customs enforcement or i.c.e. one of the agents died at the scene. investigators say it was sparked by a workplace argument. >> police officers on scene. >> reporter: a swarm of police thursday night after shots were fired inside the glen anderson federal building in long beach. the building was placed on lockdown as officers tried to get a handle on the emergency. the fbi eventually saying a workplace confrontation between two immigration agents led to bloodshed. >> the situation began with an incident of workplace violence involving two federal agents in their office space. when the incident escalated one agent fired several rounds at the other agent, wounding him. >> reporter: moments later a third agent pulled out his weapon and shot the gunman. >> at that time when the incident occurred, another agent working nearby intervened and fired his weapon to prevent additional rounds being fired at the victim. this resulted in the death of the shooter.

>> reporter: with the shooter dead, a police-escorted ambulance rushed the wounded agent to the hospital. >> we have multiple teams working on him. he's in stable condition now. >> reporter: the federal building houses offices for i.c.e. and also the irs. no civilians were hurt during the shootout. now investigators will try to figure out exactly what drove a federal agent to shoot one of his own. >> we dedicate our lives to protecting the public and our communities from harm. when something like this happens within our office, it's incomprehensible. >> reporter: and the wounded agent is still in the hospital this morning in stable condition. investigators haven't identified any of those involved in the shooting, but we can expect more answers as they dig deeper into the question as to why the shooter pulled the trigger. matt? >> thanh truong in long beach this morning. thank you very much. >> now a check of the other top stories of the morning. amy robach is at the news desk. while natalie's on assignment. amy, good morning.

"new york times" correspondent anthony shadid has died in syria on assignment. the two-time pulitzer prize winner apparently died of an asthma attack. he was one of the few reporters to gain access to syria and he had been in the face of danger for years. in 2002 he was shot in the west bank. last year he was kidnapped along with three other journalists in libya. meantime in syria, u.s. officials say al qaeda in iraq has been carrying out recent bombings in damascus and another city. new jersey lawmakers have passed a bill allowing same-sex marriage, but the measure that supporters are hailing as a victory for civil rights could be dead on arrival. governor chris christie has promised to veto the legislation when it rich reaches his desk for final approval. he could take action on the bill as early as today. a nigerian man known as the underwear bomber has been sentenced to life in prison without parole. 25-year-old abdul farooq abdul muttalab.

it was on a chris may day flight back in 2009. this video just before sentencing demonstrates how destructive his bomb could have been if it had gone off. amanda knox in a reported $4 million deal. she was cleared of murder by an italian court. she had been convicted of killing her roommate in perugia, italy. they say they'll use their journals to reveal new details of her case. and now let's head to wall street where the dow is close to breaking through a key barrier. cnbc's mary thompson is at the new york stock exchange. good morning. >> good morning to you. the dow jones industrial average sits 96 points below 13,000, a level it hasn't seen since 2008. this slow but steady rally we've seen on wall street over the last four months also pushing the nasdaq to its best levels since december of 2000. all of this comes as investors

"the colbert report" has suspended. shows have been canceled for at least two days. the network says the pause is due to, quote, unforeseen circumstances, but did not elaborate. sources close to the show say it could return as early as next week, and the tapings were canceled due to an emergency in his family. it is now 7:07. let's head back to matt, savannah and al and let's wish him well and the best for his family. >> thank you very much. we have another day to talk about heavy rain moving into the pacific northwest. another storm system will bring anywhere from about 1 to 2 inches of rain in the next 48 hours, and some heavy mountain snows through the cascades. then as we move further to the east, we've got a risk of strong storms from brownsville to corpus christi. we have flood watches up for houston. first time since september of

born, but now trails in the polls. david gregory is moderator of nbc's "meet the press." good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. >> let's start with the contraception issue. let's set the scene a little bit. the white house had to backtrack on the mandate requiring catholic institutions to provide birth control to employees. that compromise satisfied some catholics but not all. yesterday, house republicans held a hearing on the matter and democrats got a lot of mileage over the fact that the first panel of witnesses was all men. here's what nancy pelosi had to say. imagine a panel on women's health and they don't have any women on the panel. duh. what strikes me about this, neither republicans nor democrats seem anxious to move on from the issue in an election year that's supposed to be about the economy. >> that's the important point. i think on both sides they are itching for this fight. republicans see this as not just a women's health issue. as a matter of fact they would rather de-emphasize that. they see it as religious freedom, government making

decisions about health care for americans. that energizes conservatives who think the government has intruded into our lives too much. nancy pelosi under scores that contraception today is much more about women's health and is prescribed much more widely than just birth control. you look at a scene like yesterday and it underscores the fact that not only government but our religious institutions are dominated by men. it was an unfortunate image to put out there. >> maybe republicans stepped into it a little bit on that. foster frees one of the major donors to rick santorum said something to raise eyebrows in an interview. take a listen. >> this contraceptive thing, my gosh, it's such inexpensive. in my days they used bayer aspirin. gals put it between their knees and it wasn't costly. >> does this illustrate how quickly the issue can get off course?

>> it does, and rick santorum had to distance himself from those remarks because they were not helpful. even to the way he was talking about contraception, he doesn't believe in it. but as a matter of government and as president he wouldn't stand in the way of it being available. that's separate from his opposition based on religious freedom grounds, he would argue. think this is a larger point causing a lot of anxiety within the party. a lot of strategists think this is a straitjacket for the party. come general election time, whoever the nominee is even if the elements of the base are energized by the issue. >> and santorum said that was a bad off-color joke. let's talk about mitt romney. his campaigning in michigan which is his native state. he's been emphasizing the ties yet at the latest poll out of michigan, it shows rick santorum in the lead. if mitt romney were to lose in michigan, is this a political earthquake? >> it is. i know that any of us who have

been following this have to offer a cautionary note that we have been unable to pin down the race as it moved through many twists and turns. new hampshire, florida and now michigan. he's won the other two. the fire wall has held in the other states. it's important here. if he were to lose here, the air of inevitability which is slipping away, further slips away. there will be real calls for somebody else to goat get in the race and there could be more coalescing around rick santorum. many are saying he's running a conservative campaign and 16 years in congress. this is a plausible commander in chief. >> what's on "meet the press" this weekend? >> we'll talk about the campaign, the budget and the economy. paul ryan will join me as well as the democrat chris van hollen. >> thank you very much. >> whitney houston's family is gathering one day before a funeral that will draw big names. this as new information emerges in the investigation into death.

nbc's jeff rossen is outside the new jersey church where houston's funeral will be held. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. let's start with new information on the investigation. law enforcement tells nbc news police have already questioned whitney houston's doctors and they have already received her medical records. they are poring through them on the west coast. for this weekend the focus is on the east coast in newark, new jersey. the family will hold a private viewing of the body at the funeral home and here, about a block away at the church is where the funeral will happen tomorrow. there is major star power. late thursday night, bobby brown and new edition were back on stage in maryland. >> i'd like to say thank you for your prayers. >> reporter: he paid tribute to whitney houston. >> i'm going to throw two up for whitney. >> reporter: after buzz that he

teenager. >> this is a church and we're going to have some church in this celebration. >> reporter: it is a private funeral, invitation only. fans are showing up by the hundreds. >> we just want to pay our respects and say good-bye. >> reporter: whitney will be buried nearby at this new jersey cemetery, the same cemetery where her father is buried. this morning we have new details in the death investigation after finding prescription pills in whitney's hotel suite law enforcement tells nbc news they have questioned her doctors and obtained her medical records. police say they don't suspect foul play, but they are still waiting for toxicology results. >> great to see you. >> god bless you. >> reporter: in the days before her death whitney visited doctors' offices at least twice, leaving this medical building in beverly hills february 2. on february 7th she was back again, unclear why.

to whitney houston aretha franklin was simply aunt ree and aretha called whitney by the family nickname, nippy. she said she was shocked and saddened when she heard about the death. she was in a hotel room in charlotte, north carolina, and found out the same way the rest of us did. >> i was sitting on the side of the bed. i had just finished watching george clooney in "the descendants." and i flip back to the regular tv. maybe two minutes after i did that it came across the screen. >> we have some sad breaking news. singer whitney houston is dead. >> i just jumped up off the side of the bed. what? this could not be. what is this? i just said, oh, my god. that's not good. >> somebody said she was doing well. she was on the verge of a comeback. >> i thought so. she looked beautiful. she really looked good. i saw some of the previews from "sparkle." she looked fresh, healthy and

>> i think it's her dad's responsibility to step up to the plate and be responsible. but, you know, there are a lot of factors. it's really not for me to say. it's not for me to say. >> we have all read about whitney's struggles. through the years did she ever talk to you about that. look for guidance or counseling? >> no. but early on i let her know if she needed any advice or if she needed to talk to anything, she could always call me. she knew that. but she had experienced people around her. her mother, cissy, was experienced, dionne warwick. i thought she was okay, particularly under the tutelage of clive davis. >> whitney had difficult dates in europe. ♪ we'll always love you >> when you watched it, what did you think? >> i didn't like what i saw happening. the audience, they were rude.

but she stood there with a heart of a champion. she went through it. >> if you're a fragile singer trying to make a comeback, what pressure does it put on you? >> i'm sure she was devastated by the time it was over. she had to be totally devastated. when you're a singer and you can't sing what you want to sing and she sad some problems in her highest range, it is very disheartening to you when you can't do what you want to do. >> do you think about what her legacy is going to be? this collection of just unbelievable songs? >> yeah. ♪ i get so emotional, baby ♪ every time i think of you >> with this ending, do you think that tarnishes it or takes away from it? >> no, i don't. one of the last things she sung was "yes, jesus loves me."

thing. when you step back and look at the entire thing and what kind of parenting it is, the first thing that jumps out to me is this is a real mouthy kid. i wonder where she got it? this is somebody that acted without thinking. i wonder where she got that? dad sure didn't pump the brakes before he posted this up. >> i don't think anybody would argue that the 15-year-old crossed a line. it was rude. it was obscene but she's 15. that's not an excuse. it's reality. doesn't one person in the group have to remain the adult? >> that's the problem here. she has a 15-year-old brain. you really can't expect her to predict all the consequences of her actions and weigh this stuff out. but he got down to her level. she was disrespectful publically. she called him names. she cussed at him publically. he turned around and did exactly the same thing. how is it wrong for him to do it

but right for her to do it? you never, ever humiliate your child publically. that's not something you do. you don't ever do that. you are supposed to be the adult, the calm in the storm where you say, okay, you choose the behavior, you choose the consequences. this consequence was radical. >> when asked why he did it publically, tommy jordan wrote, because that's how i was raised. if i did something embarrassing to my parents in public such as the grocery store i got my tail tore up in front of god and everyone. this is the internet. it's a lot bigger than a grocery store. >> plus, matt, look, even if that's the case, just because their parents humiliated him publically doesn't make it right. what we want to do is carry forward the legacies that are good, not the legacies where our parents made mistakes. the fact that they did it is not okay. i always hear parents say, i turned out well. did you, really? he ratcheted up the rhetoric. here's the question, matt.

what do you do now? clearly she has resentment toward him which is probably passing from a day to the next. i'm not saying overall they are bad parents. i don't know. all we know is what we see here. this didn't do anything to lower resentment on her part. it's just intimidation. >> you're worried about what happens the next time she does something bad. how do you punish that behavior? >> sure. it's like you tell your child, okay, you're grounded for life. okay. what do you do the next time? they're already grounded for life. you pulled out a .45 and blew up her laptop. what happens when she breaks curfew or drives and get as ticket. now do you blow up the car? you have advanced the rhetoric so far that you have nowhere else to go. >> i want to mention the father posted comments online where he says his daughter has gotten past this. while she had her crying fit and was upset about it initially she now has managed to laugh about

it and according to him, is not scarred by it. now i want to give you the results of the poll we conducted online, phil, okay? 120,000 people or so weighed in. 73% said this is appropriate punishment. what's your reaction to that? >> like i said, a lot of parents are voting vicariously like, yep, i have thought about doing that and i wish i had. one of the things i want to say here is we've got to look at this in terms of matters of degree. for example, 100,000 children born this year will be molested by their father before they are 18 years old. we have such a serious problem with neglect, abandonment and abusing children physically here. that didn't happen here. we have to keep it in perspective. did he use good judgment here? no. i don't think so. as i say, where do you go from here. he got revenge on what she did to him publically, but it's not his job to get revenge.

professional success and a beautiful family until his wife turned up dead. it's a legal saga that's lasted nearly two years and has just taken a big turn. last week bruce beresford redman was extradited from los angeles to mexico where he's accused of killing his wife monica. at a hearing this week his attorney said their client is innocent and asked that the charges be thrown out. bruce watched from behind bars. >> it wasn't really a strong case. there wasn't really no evidence that tiede edirectly to our client -- to the murder of his wife. >> reporter: on wednesday the mexican judge ruled the case will go to trial. >> i was there when he was notified by the court. i can assure you that he is completely devastated. >> reporter: he had been a hot shot tv producer for "survivor" and other hit reality shows. >> he was very compassionate and hard-working. he was just really good at what

go gluten-free. is that a good idea if you don't have to do it? joy, good morning. >> good morning. >> this is all the rage right now. everything you see in the grocery store says gluten-free. start with the very basics here. what is gluten? >> it's a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. all derivatives of wheat, barley and rye. if it's bread or pasta or crackers or bars or cookies, even sometimes soy sauce and marinades will have some sort of gluten. >> why do we hear so much about it recently, these gluten-free diets? >> because so many people are diagnosed with gluten issues. it's estimated at least 1 in 100 americans respond negatively to gluten. at the same time it's been very glamourized. it helps you lose weight and keeps you you feeling fabulous. >> does a gluten-free diet mean you will lose weight? that's why a lot of people do

if? >> you'll wind up significantly reducing calories. yes, you're going to lose weight. on the other hand, if you've replaced all those glult ten-containing foods with a gluten-free counterparts, you pull out bread but you eat gluten-free bread, it's a wash. you have the same amount of calories you started with and you're not going to lose weight. >> we'll talk about what to look out for. who should go gluten-free? there's two the categories of people, right? >> yeah. >> the first category of the people diagnosed with celiac. it's a serious autoimmune disorder, it's like type 1 diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. your body views gluten as the enemy and goes into attack mode and does an assault on the delicate cells in your small intestine. that's where a lot of dejes shun takes place and it interferes with the absorption of vitamins

and minerals. >> how do you know if you have celiac disease? what are the symptoms? >> the symptoms are all over the place. you can have chronic stomach aches and pains and bloating and diarrhea, weight loss, incredible fatigue and weakness. you have serious issues like osteoporosis, you don't absorb calcium or vitamin d or anemia. some have fertility issues and kids fail to thrive. >> how do you diagnose celiac disease? some are nebulous. >> if you have these symptoms and you think you might have celiac, the most important thing is keep eating gluten. i know that sounds crazy, but it's because whether you go to the doctor for the test, the blood test and perhaps a biopsy, they want to see that you have been inflamed from eating gluten. if you stop eating if gluten before you go to the doctor, you'll be healed.

keep eating gluten and meet with your doctor and don't self-diagnose. >> a second category of folks are those who are gluten-sensitive. >> this is another real diagnosis. we know that it exists. it's just not as serious or life-concerning in terms of health conditions onlasting as celiac is. the symptoms are bothersome. they're like the benign symptoms celiac. stomach issues, weakness, headaches, rashes, and in terms of how you diagnose whether you have a sensitivity, first keep eating gluten, go to the doctor and rule out celiac. if you don't have celiac, do self-investigative work. go off gluten for two to three weeks. if your symptoms resolve, do a challenge. put it back in for two or three days, and if those come back, guess what? >> you should be able to tell immediately if it's the gluten that make you feel bad. >> a lot of people are gluten

sensitive. i don't want to down-play that. >> what should we look for in labels? >> there are a lot of great grut ten-free products out there. make sure it's a gluten-free whole grain. next, you want to make sure it has a reasonable amount of sugar, specifical ily with breakfast cereals, no more than 8 grams of sugar per serving. stay away from gluten-free junk. there are so many terrific, wholesome, healthy gluten-free products. i'm going to throw these out on twitter and facebook. this is good stuff. >> your bottom line is if you don't need to be a gluten-free diet, you shouldn't be? >> no reason to go gluten-free. our newest bow wow dogs are looking for new homes, but first,s in "today" on nbc. whatcha lookin' for hon?

dr. keri peterson is a "today" contributor to women's health magazine. good morning, good to see you. >> good morning, willie. >> one in three deaths. that amounts to 2200 deaths per day. staggering statistics. this is awareness month, it feels like the message is out there. but are people getting? >> unfortunately the well-being of americans is on the decline ever since the economic recession began. there was a gallup well-being index that found obesity and smoking are on an upward trajectory since then. it's probably because people are stressed and not taking as good care of themselves. >> let's look at five ways to change that, then. number one, eat plants and fish. let's start with the plants and vegetables and fruits. where do we start? >> there are two main groups you want. first are those rich in antioxidants. those are colorful fruits like pomegranates, blueberries, tomatoes and spinach. they function to prevent build-up of plaque in the arteries. then there is the potassium-containing fruits and

vegetables. oranges, bananas and mushrooms. these lower the blood pressure. you should get about five to nine servings every day of some fruit or vegetable. >> we talk about fish and we hear the term omega-3s. what are they and why are soy so important? >> omega-3s are fats found in fatty fish like salmon, sardines and rainbow trout. these lower triglycerides and blood pressure. at women's health we recommend getting a four-ounce serving twice a week which is about the size of a deck of cards to get the benefit. >> twice a week, a deck of cards. okay, good to remember. number two on the list, cut out fatty foods. what are the worst offenders? >> the worst are the saturated fats and the trans fats. saturated fats are in butter, meat and whole fat dairy. they elevate bad cholesterol. and you really should limit them to 7% of your daily calories. now the trans fats, they're even worse offenders. they not only raise the bad cholesterol but they lower your good cholesterol.

these are found in margarine, shortening, pastries, fried foots, lots of stuff. that should be less than 1% of your daily calories. >> 1%. okay, number three you say know your risk. what does that mean? >> know your risk, know your numbers. you need to know your risk factors are for heart disease so you can pro-actively address them. so your number, you need to know your cholesterol, your blood sugar and your blood pressure. and you need to know your family history. if you have a female in your family that's had heart disease under the age of 65 or a male that's had heart disease under the age of 50 you are at greater risk. >> all right. number four is exercise. this is one we know we have to do and we don't do it. let me ask on behalf of americans. what's the minimum amount of exercise i can do to help myself? >> the minimum according to the american heart association is 30 minutes five days a week. and it doesn't have to be expensive. just brisk walking. take a friend. >> that sounds like a lot to people, 30 minutes five days a

week. >> 30 minutes five days a week. get home, put your coat down, put your walkman on and go for 30 minutes around the neighborhood with a friend. you're done. >> just get the heart moving even if it's walking. >> yes. >> number five, stop smoking. another one that sounds pretty obvious but difficult for people. >> two to four times more likely to have heart disease if you are a smoker. it just creates the perfect storm for a heart attack. narrows the vessels, elevates blood pressure and thickens your blood. if you don't want to do it for yourself, consider the people that you're smoking around. because secondhand smoke exposure also puts those people at risk for heart disease, as well. >> just to recap, eat plant and fish, cut the fatty foods, know your risk, exercise and stop smoking. >> thank you. >> thanks so much. appreciate it. good advice. still to come the dad who shot up his daughter's laptop to teach her a lesson. yes he did. just punishment or unjust behavior? we'll take a look. but first, these messages. bad ?

another wounded in southern california after a shooting between an i.c.e. agent and his supervisor. one immigration and customs enforcement agent shot another during an argument, wounding him. now a third agent intervened, killing the shooter. the injured agent is hospitalized in stable condition. it appears this was an isolated case of workplace violence and the shooter acted alone. faculty at uc davis will take a vote as to whether they have confidence in the school's chancellor. linda katehi has been criticized for the university's handling much the now infamous pepper spray incident. today's faculty vote is nonbinding but could have an affect on katehi's future with the uc system. we take a look at the forecast.
