good morning. i'm chris sanchez. coming up on "today in the bay," the bay bridge could open a little sooner than expected. the latest details on the progress crews are making this weekend and south bay police search for suspects who opened fire at a south bay mall and we hear from jeremy lin's shooting coach who lives right here in the bay area. this is "today in the bay."

and we are looking live at oakland. you can see a little bit of a gloomy start to the day. we are expecting more chilly temperatures for today but very spring-like temperatures coming up for the rest of the week. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda. a little bit of everything. >> the seven-day forecast timing not all that good. we'll see 70s but not for the holiday weekend. >> no. >> it's cold this morning. might have noticed a little bit of dryer air coming in overnight. 30s and 40s. another thing to watch, sonoma county coastline right in the north bay, a few sprinkles out there. most of the showers with a weakening band and clouds offshore, will filter the sunshine at time. it will bring around cool temperatures today. even around lunchtime i think we're mainly in the low to mid-50s. highs finishing off the day upper 50s. in fact, tomorrow i think we'll see a better chance of seeing a few showers, so we'll talk about how much rain we're expecting fanned it has any impacts on the

bay bridge construction work that's going to be continuing throughout the day as well. >> a lot of folks watching that. thanks, rob. caltrans is feeling pretty pleased with itself about the work on the bay bridge this morning. crews are making significant progress on this weekend's project which shut down the westbound deck of the president's day weekend. caltrans will regroup today, evaluate overnight work to determine whether it can reopen earlier than the target of tuesday, 5:00 in the morning. again, that's a live picture we were looking at. meantime, traffic around the bay area, especially in marin county, not moving as smoothly. these are live pictures -- rather not live pictures, pictures from last night from the chopper, 10 is 1 in marin county county. alternate bay bridges are seeing a marked speak in traffic. >> reporter: work on the bay bridge currently shut down

westbound is going smoothly thanks in part to the sunny dry weather. >> we're doing very well with our schedule. right now we've definitely on schedule to make it tuesday 5:00 a.m. we may potentially be able to open early. >> crews are working to create a detour near the toll plaza which will shift traffic south of its existing path. the detour will allow for the demolition of a conflicting section of the original bridge. as crews work, drivers are dealing with heavy traffic on alternative routes from the east bay to the city. hundreds of fans of cal's rugby team navigated the sluggish roads to make it to a game on treasure island. what is normally a 20-minute trip from berkeley turned into a practice in patience. >> it was just really bumper to bumper all the way through that whole richmond area. >> it took the richmond bridge, the golden gate, took us about an hour and 40 minutes. tough. >> reporter: how was traffic? >> really bad, really slow. >> reporter: advice to drivers this weekend? >> take b.a.r.t.

>> reporter: and this is an option. b.a.r.t. is running trains overnight. it usually shuts down from midnight to 5:00 a.m. ferries are also running overtime to accommodate those looking for alternatives to driving. >> we want to take advantage of the fact that the b.a.r.t. will go for overnight, for going to clubs and having a nice night. >> i like the b.a.r.t. >> i'll take the ferry, a nice leisurely ride down and back. >> reporter: kimberly terry, "today in the bay." >> this is the fourth time caltrans has shut down bay bridge since construction began on the new bay bridge. it's likely to be the last time until the new bay bridge opens next year. have you noticed the price of gas? it is not your imagination. bay area prices are quickly rocketing past that $1 mark, and some analysts say a gallon of regular unleaded could cost 4.50 by memorial day. the statewide average is now $4.02, 31 cents higher than just a month ago n.san jose, gas is

4.02 a gallon and in san francisco it's 4.07 and in oakland it's 4.01. analysts blame california's prices right now on the switch to summer gas blend, closing refineries and increasing world demand. rising gas prices and the political fallout, just one of the topics on this morning's "meet the press" following this newscast. new this morning, we are following overnight violence in east oakland where two people were killed in separate shootings, according to police. the first one was reported just after midnight on c street near 90 avenue. there the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. an hour later a man was found suffering from a gunshot wound. he died about 15 minutes later. police are asking anyone with information to contact them. in the south bay, police are searching for the men who stabbed two teenagers at a san jose mall. police responded to the double stabbing inside east ridge mall around 7:30 last night. officials closed and evacuated vc penny's and macy's to allow

officers to search the area. police are looking for as many as three who got away, possibly on foot. police say that this attack may be gang-related. they also say the two victims were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. and in livermore, two teenagers are under arrest for allegedly attacking a livermore police officer, breaking his leg. police responded to a large street brawl around 1:30 yesterday morning. police tried to handcuff one of the teenagers but was punched several times in the face and stomacthbyno aer teen. another man reportedly jumped on the officer's back and tried to choke him. officers arrested one juvenile as well as this man on charges that include battery to a police officer. the officer, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital, treated for his injuries and then released. fremont police are asking for your help in busting copper wire thieves. over the last couple of months, thieves have stolen about

$460,000 worth of copper wiring from streetlights, and the problem is so bad in parts of fremont, entire streets are now in the dark. while police track down the criminals, city leaders are looking at other deterrents like more secure pole boxes, and are also asking neighbors to call police if they see crews that look suspicious. a $100 million bust which los angeles police say it the biggest pcp get they have ever gotten. police say they found enough of the drug for 10 million doses in l.a. and culver city. this was a major bust of a national drug trafficking organization that included at least ten people. authorities also found nearly $400,000 in cash and two assault weapons. and a reblinder of a number of services that you might rely on that will be closed during this president's day holiday on monday. all federal, state and county offices, including the post office, will be closed. banks and other financial institutions will also observe that holiday. most bay area public transit

ahead. rob mayeda is here with a look at today's forecast. >> it actually is cold enough for a little bit of patchy frost, especially up towards the north bail. seeing mid-30s. some of the weather headlines. 30s and 40s outside. a chilly start. variable high clouds during the afternoon. that's going to help to reflect back some of that sunshine, so we're probably not going to warm up a whole lot today, and for the coast we could actually see a few sprinkles. we'll show you that on the doppler radar in a moment. monday just a few showers mainly north of the golden gate bridge and as kris talked about middle part of the week, it will start to feel like spring around the bay area. marin county coastline up towards sonoma county, just a few sprinkles out there. we're seeing a lot of clouds spilling down the coast, but you notice here this band of clouds, not a lot of low level moisture. these are mainly high level clouds streaming over the bay area which will keep our temperatures down today, as we call filtered sunshine. and up on the north coast, another system will sweep in as

we head into monday. that will give us a better chance of seeing a few sprinkles. during the day, a few clouds all the way through 9:00, later on this evening and tonight. heading into monday. briefly a few light rain showers across over towards the north bay. look really close as can you see the morning model run has pulled back on the light rain which is good news for the bay bridge construction. our rain accumulations, not a whole lot. maybe just a little bit to wet the ground in a few spots, mainly around the coastal hill tops in san francisco. looks like drizzle coming in through monday. as long as the rainfall projections hold up like that, should not see much of a weather impact on the ongoing construction into tuesday morning we think with the bay bridge. around the sierra, we'll see a chance of some snow here, but look at those snow totals, not a lot. just enough to maybe put a coating of new snow there on some of the accumulations in the high country so this, again, coming in for monday. not a lot of moisture, therefore, not a lot of snow in the sierra. around the bay area today, upper 50s around san jose town towards

gilroy so kind of cool outside. we're going to see the numbers jump almost 10 to 15 degrees by the middle part of the week. close to 60 in pressanton and cool day out along the coast. in the 50s and a few sprinkles towards the marin headlands and towards the north bay. better chance of some showers, especially for the north day. can you see our temperatures, bay areawide staying in the 50s, but once we get past tuesday, inland spots starting to warm up. numbers in the inland valley around the east bay and south bay having a chance of some 70s, so the timing really not as good as we would like. you get the beautiful weather when you've got to go back to work and next weekend cooling off a bit. maybe showers by next sunday, so, again, the computer model runs pulling back on most of the showers. we hope the weather will continue to be a non-factor at the bay bridge. >> i'm not complaining about that forecast. off on thursdays and fridays. >> works out perfect for you. >> we arrange it had that way. a chinesemerican school in

pleasanton is asking for blood donors to help a young woman battling leukemia. she's been through several treatments since being diagnosed three years ago. she posted a tearful youtube video last month asking people to donate blood for her and people like her. the chinese-american school will be holding their blood drive this morning starting at 9:00. it will be held at amador valley high school where the girl graduated. another blood drive will be held at the school late they are week. in about half an hour, runners will hit san francisco streets in celebration of the year of the dragon. people are already getting red for the 34th annual chinese new year run which starts at 8:00 this morning. more than 2,000 runners will make their way through the city in both 5k and 10k races. proceeds benefit local ymca and community centers in chinatown. the run starts at 8:00 this morning near grant avenue and sacramento street. the course runs through chinatown and north beach neighborhoods as well. san francisco wants you to think green when you visit

heading to the bay area heading towards the afternoon, a fairly cool day today. across the board. really look at highs in the mid-to upper 50s for san jose and the coast and the north bay low, looking at low to mid-50s today. tomorrow, a better chance of a few sprinkles out there, and then, yes, a return to some spring-like temperatures showing up in the seven-day forecast. a lack at that. we'll have that for you coming up in the next half hour. >> thank you very much, rob. new this morning, police say two people were killed in two separate shootings in east oakland overnight. the first shooting reported just after midnight on c street near 98th avenue. the victim was pronounced dead at scene. an hour later on seminary and harmon avenue a man was found suffering from a gunshot wound, and he died 15 minutes later. police are asking anyone with information to contact them. a reminder, all westbound lanes of the bay bridge are closed during this presidents day holiday weekend because of construction, but work could be done sooner than later. caltrans is working to create a

detour near the toll plaza so it can demolish an old section of the bridge. it is evaluating the work done so far, and officials say it could reopen earlier than the target time of 5:00 tuesday morning. traffic has been bumper to bumper at several alternate routes from the east bay to san francisco. ferry service and b.a.r.t. are running overtime, past their usual schedules to accommodate more riders as well. riders like the idea of more alternatives to driving. >> actually we want to take advantage of the fact that the b.a.r.t. will go overnight and going to club and have a nice night. >> the b.a.r.t. is trustworthy. i like the b.a.r.t. >> i figuring i'm just going to take the ferry. a nice leisurely ride down and bark. >> b.a.r.t. officials say it expects to surpass the usual ridership numbers during this three-day holiday weekend. we're just about a week away from the michigan primaries and the battle to become the republican presidential nominee continues to heat up.

>> a former campaign official for mitt romney is fighting allegations of misconduct. arizona sheriff paul backio resigned from romney's state campaign after being accused of abusing his power. the sheriff, who is also running for a congressional seat, recently came out as gay. a former boyfriend says he threatened to deport him after that relationship ended, something the sheriff denies. >> at no time did i or anyone who represents me ever threaten deportation, ever. that is the main allegation that is being made, and it's blatantly, completely false. >> reporter: babio said he was outed by his former boyfriend who sent private pictures to a local newspaper. the fda will soon weigh in on whether a new inhaleable caffeine is safe. aeroshot went on sale in massachusetts and new york last month.

each lipstick-sized container contains b vitamins and 100 milligrams of caf each powder, about the same as a large cup of coffee. aeroshot did not require fda approval in the u.s. because it's sold as a dietary supplement. they are looking at whether it was right for the manufacturer to brand it as a dietary supplement. new this morning in iraq, police say all of the 18 dead so far in a suicide bombing are police officers or recruits. the bomb went off as a group of police recruits left their academy in eastern baghdad. the blast wounded 27 people. al qaeda in iraq is suspected as being behind this attack. a young man is fighting for his life after he was shot at pleasant hill. the shooting happened at 7:30 last night at a field behind strandwood elementally school. three robbers approached the victim and several friends at gunpoint. a struggle ensued ending with the victim shot in the chest. he is in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

b.a.r.t. use that to get under the water from oakland to san francisco. they have extended their service, running 24 hours throughout the closure. a great opportunity for you to try this system, if you haven't yet already. okay, maybe you need that car, absolutely do. here are some options for you as well. drive south on 880 and take that through oakland adding to the traffic past the coliseum and folks will take the 92 interchange, the san mayato bridge over to the peninsula where you'll join up to 101, taking it up past the san francisco airport and past candlestick route. to the north, south shore freewfree way towards the san rafael side and then town towards the golden gate bridge. a beautiful try, but a note. two-toll route. costs you twice as much. folks, the bay bridge is closed so if to nbc bay area and sea b you can get all that information throughout the weekend. traffic as folks are trying to make their way around the bay bridge construction project. do be patient, and if you can, use public transportation. it's the best way to get around. well, we don't know who will win the presidency in 2012, but we do know there will be major changes in california's congressional delegation. for more, let's bring in nbc bay area political analyst larry gjertsen with why we can be so sure that we're going to see new faces in congress from california. >> one thing you can bet on. two factors here, kris. first of all, the citizens independent commission, redistricting commission, they reapportion the congressional and legislative districts. seem to put everything in population balance. got to do that every ten years because of the census, okay, but unlike the past when the legislature did this, this time incumbents weren't protected. they didn't have lopsided democratic districts and lopsided republican districts. second in, at least four cases you're going to find incumbents facing each other because the districts have changed, and they now find themselves living in the same place. that's like a shootout you know one of those guys is going to

lose never case. that's a volatile combination that the new districts and incumbents facing each other, wow, big change. >> just because it happens every ten years doesn't mean, that you know, it's going to be fair in terms of political parties. is there going to be one party that's going to come out on top. >> i think most people will think this time it's much more fair than in the past when all these incumbents were protected, but here's the thing. the democrats in california, call it fair or unfair, they have many more people on their side than republicans do. they just have gained voters over the past ten years, a big advantage, 44-31 percentage-wise and more democrats will be in almost every part of the state. that means several republican incumbents works were once very comfortable positions, very favorable districts, now find themselves in an uphill battle so what they are really thinking is maybe i ought to retire rather than face this terrific uphill battle in a district that was republican but is now pretty

democratic. that's just the numbers. that's all there is to it. >> now, how much turnover do you think -- well, you're talking about how much turnover you're going to think. how do you think this is going to affect things and how unusual is it to have this turnover? >> chris, it's very unusual. over the last ten years we saw one congressional seat change hands, one. and that's when you had jerry mcinerney beat richard tomlin right nearby, right? >> right. >> this time, you're talking four to six seats that the democrats are going to gain, you're talking about republican incumbents, you could see one-quarter of the congressional delegation that is brand new. most of those are going to be democrats, but let me tell you something. there's something that people aren't thinking about, especially the democrats right now. we are going to be losing a lot of seniority, including republican seniority. there's a guy, for example in, southern california, jerry lewis, republican, who heads the appropriations committee.

at last we heard, still running ahead of schedule, the weather helping. as can you see dry roads leading up to that construction. hopefully that can continue, especially as we roll in towards monday. one thing you're going to notice outside this morning. unlike yesterday. temperatures close to 50. you might have been able to slip outside without a jacket. not the case this morning. 30s and 40s outside. 41 in san jose. look at the numbers as you get over to santa rosa, 39. clouds spilling in that have seemed to eliminated the drop-off in the morning temperatures. a chilly start to the day. we'll see variable clouds for the afternoon which is going to block out a little bit of the sun. for the coast, a chance of few sprinkles and once we get past monday temperatures will really start to warm up around the bay area. radar picking up, maybe a few sprinkles towards the marin headlands. you can see that out here. most of the action should stay offshore. a weak system that's dropping down the coast. as it typical. systems drop in out of the north, tend to be cold and tend to be relatively dry, and we're

getting a good example of that this morning. the futurecast going through the day. offshore showers, a few sprinkles. just enough to hit your windshield but really not adding up in the rain gauges around the area. sure enough, as you watch the construction work around the bay bridge, the rainfall projections as we go into monday, a little bit wet here to wet the ground midday monday, but you can see the totals, very unimpressive but very good if you're going to try to get the repairs done on time. temperatures today for the bay bridge, upper 50s. a cool day. another cool day tomorrow, so that warmup is just not going to show up for the holiday weekend, but it will come back for the middle part of the week. you can see temperatures pretty much throughout the bay area today hanging out in the mid-to upper 50s. so the seven-day forecast starts to warm things up a little bit on tuesday. i think it will be breezy as high pressure starts to build back in and winds turn offshore. that means the coast will even warm up. mid-60s on the coast. 70s inland wednesday and
