the morning. you'll feel it as you step out the door. 6:00. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> good morning. i'm jon kelley. to get to the beautiful weather let's get to the beautiful meteorologist christina loren to tell us about how nice it's going to be for two straight days. >> yeah, really comfortable conditions. we're still in winter, now we have bypassed the coldest point of the winter. but still very unseasonably warm. a live look outside, this is campbell, the community center. look at people out there. 6:00 a.m. this morning. they don't have the heavy jackets on. they are out there enjoying beautiful campbell. let's check your drive, see what's happening on the roads. >> no pedestrians on the highway. that's the good news. the south bay, a smooth drive on our speed sensor shows up. we don't have major problems. early slowing popped up on 101. there is an accident and ambulance has been called to 101 at mckee, the stretch that shows the slowdown and the early volume so we'll track that.

hopefully that clears quickly. >> we'll check back. thank you. new this morning sunnyvale fire investigators getting ready to enter a home destroyed in an overnight blaze. they are looking for a family of four who may or may not be inside. bob redell is live with the latest. >> reporter: the fire department is trying to get in touch with any family, friends, people who might know this family. they are waiting for daylight to go in and search the home that burned down. they hope they don't find anything. they are praying that the family who lives here was out of town when a fire destroyed their home. it's ski week after all. but there is good reason to be concerned. there is a mom and dad and two young children, a boy and girl, possibly 3 and 7, no one saw any one escape. two cars are still in the driveway.

>> i have no idea. i suspect they are going to find bodies. sorry. i am too. it's very tragic. that's my gut belief. >> reporter: the reason they are waiting for the sun to come up -- the home was destroyed, there are bare walls. they need a structural engineer to get in there first to say yes, it's okay for you to go in and do a search. again, they are going to wait for the sun. this was a two-alarm fire. they are trying to investigate what caused it to stafrmt bob redell, "today in the bay." >> 6:03. a man is recovering this morning after being shot outside the in and out burger near fisherman's wharf. it happened last night. an argument led to the gun fire. one man was hit in the leg. police are looking for a third

person. >> an active crime scene in oakland, police investigating a shooting. christie smith joins us live from the scene. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. who shot a man sitting in a car? that's what oakland police are trying to figure out this morning. what's odd is that the car is not full of bullet hole this is morning and it appears to be a new car with paper plates on it. at this point they tell us they aren't sure, they believe the victim was alone in the car. the person was conscious and taken to the hospital. shot in the chest. police aren't saying how many times he was shot but they did get the call about 4:15 this morning of a victim wounded in a car. this is on adeline street which is pretty busy. oakland police have been trying to find witnesses, even going door to door. so far they are not having much

luck. i spoke with a couple of neighbors just waking up and they tell me they didn't hear anything so police don't have a lot to go on. as far as what type of shooter they are looking for. 32nd and adeline is where we're standing. when we got here the entire street was shut at 32nd. at this point they have the road open at least northbound. christie smith, "today in the bay." >> 6:04. hard work and high tech scores may no longer get you into san jose state. the school might end preferential treatment. applicants are currently considered using minimum statewide requirements. however, state budget cuts may force the tufrt adopt a more rigorous standard. >> researchers discussing a

disturbing study that finds local schools are falling short when it comes to physical fitness. students are required to get 20 minutes a day. but it found only about a fifth of students were meeting that requirement. in response the san francisco school district plans to hire four more p.e. teachers. that wold bring the total to 19. >> a union city teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student is expected back in court. he could enter a plea. he is accused of having a nine-month sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student. the teacher began that last march. >> san francisco man accused of sexually assaulting three women will be back in court today. frederick dossier is scheduled for a status yearing accused of

three violent attacks between june and december last year. >> it is 6:06. newark police asking for help in bringing to justice one of their most wanted felons. 28-year-old patrick gregoire is wanted for leaving the scene of a crack. he took off when they tried to pull him over. they found a loaded handgun and marijuana in his vehicle. any one is asked to call police. >> in one city if you get cut puffing you could have to cough up cash. the ordinance would prohibit smoking in outdoor areas including parks, public events and within 20 feet of any building entry way. city leaders hope to have the ordinance drafted by next month. >> the san jose earthquake feeling happy getting a new

stadium. the planning commission giving the green late to a 18,000 seat stadium. neighbors were asking the say to kill the plan because of potential noise and the lights. the commission conditioned the appeal. >> i want to check the forecast now with christina loren. it's hard to believe we're still in with these temperatures. >> on par to do the same today with a mild start, high pressure is going to weken a little bit throughout day today. nonetheless we're starting out warm in sunnyvale at 51 degrees. 47 in concord, 58 in fairfield. take a look at the difference. almost 20 degrees. that's because we don't have that wind pulling through. we had a live shot of campbell.

>> we're covering breaking news out of arizona where a long list of marines have been killed in a training exercise. marla tellez is in our newsroom now. she has all of the updated information. good morning. >> good morning. defense officials tell nbc news seven u.s. marines were killed when their two helicopters collided in midair overnight. this happened near yuma, arizona. officials say the marines were stationed in southern california and miramar and conducting a training exercise when their

choppers crashed as i said in midair. the cause is under investigation. >> to the latest in afghanistan. we're getting word president obama has sent a letter to afghan president karzai calling the act of burning korans an inadvertent error. he apologizes saying those responsible will be held accountable. the president's apology comes hours after two u.s. nato troops were shot and killed in eastern afghanistan by an afghan soldier who officials say blamed the americans for the protests that are now in their third day. >> off to the coast of italy now, rescue and search teams are searching for more bodies on board the wrecked "costa concordia." eight bodies were discovered yesterday including a 5-year-old italian girl whose father also died in the accident. seven people are still missing. the death toll from that ship wreck now stands at 25.

that's going to keep us mild. already starting out mild in fairfield. probably will hit 80 degrees. behindy conditions, mid morning at their strongest. warm conditions as a result. we'll see mid to upper 70s inland. san jose, about 78 for you today. when it comes to winds if you have loose objects in the yard, you live above 1,000 feet you want to tie anything down by these winds. by 10:00 a.m. likely at their strongest. you can see all of that red turns to yellow. by tomorrow morning calm conditions. 77 for san jose. about 72 degrees in pleasanton and 75 in san francisco. your seven-day outlook shows you we're going to cal uf, a few shower over the weekend and then next week looks much cooler. thursday 76, down to 58 by next

wednesday. let's check your drive. >> we'll take you back to the south bay where we talked about the accident, 101 at mckee near the off ramp pushed off to the shoulder and that slowing cleared up. then in the last minutes we've had an accident near oakland road further to the north. no slowing does show up yet but that might take a couple of minutes. so prepare but that has moved to the shoulder. southbound 880 coming to the 237 interchange, heading out of mill pete into sunnyvale an accident around the transition might be affecting the lanes. it doesn't sound like they are stuck, just going to make their way off the freeway. chp will give us more when they arrive. 680 through sunol. getting to 680 another accident. that might be the cause of some of the slowing westbound an accident. certainly in lanes moving to the shoulder. we're seeing a couple minutes tacked on to drive over to that

speaking in alameda he is expected to talk about the need for more money to build new ships to replace the aging fleet. the highest honor will be awarded during a special ceremony today. members of three japanese-american military units will receive the congressional gold medal 70 years after they served in world war ii. the soldiers were risking their lives many of their families were confined in camps. our mike inouye will emcee tonight's event to honor vets who are not able to attend the ceremony in washington. >> the infamous pepper spraying of uc davis led to a lawsuit suing for the confrontation. the suit claims uc davis chancellor and police, students say the lawsuit is aimed at changing university policy.

science fair. the students there say the two men inspired them to pursue their passions. you may remember myth busters received a little bad press when an experiment went very bad. a cannon ball ended up tearing through a neighborhood and into a home and minivan. nobody was hurt. >> the soldier in the middle of the wikileaks scandal will be arraigned in military court. bradley manning faces charges including theft, fraud and aiding the enemy. the 24-year-old is accused of providing mountains of classified material to anti-secrecy website wikileaks. if found guilty he could face life. >> both the federal government and the state cracking down on privacy violations on the internet. scott you say debt companies. >> there is nothing worse for any company than attracting

government regulation. silicon valley has tickled the tail of the dragon one too many times. yesterday california attorney announced a new focus on the way that ap developers alert their users about privacy and this morning the obama administration will around an agreement with how you are tracked on websites. expect more interest from washington as the year progresses. the company announced earnings fell more than 40%. this is meg whitman's first full quarter as ceo, undoing the damage caused by a practices past ceos and board members. a blogger criticized tesla saying if you let a battery run down to nothing and let it sit for a long time it will never take a charge again. there were plenty of ways of

throughout the day, plenty of 70s, a couple of 80s. i'll tell you where. when the rain arrives it's coming up. >> great weather, some schools have the week off. we're seeing lighter flow of traffic around the bay. but 580 not getting a break. 23 minutes out of the altamont pass. we have two accidents, one at hacienda might be in the slow lane, the other at the off ramp so the dublin interchange is clear. it's getting there that is a problem. an accident south of there, highway 84 as you make the transition on to 680 over to sunol. there may be another one back in livermore 84 at isabelle. a lot of activity for the area. hopefully a lighter volume. >> thank you, mike. >> 6:31. we have an update on a story we're following, a fire destroy as sunnyvale home and the concern at this point is a family of four may not is been able to get out.

bob redell is live at the scene. good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. people here in the neighborhood are scared, concerned about what the fire department might find when they search this home later this morning at sun up. there is a family of four who lives here who no one has heard from. a neighbor tells us it's a mom and dad and boy and girl, possibly 3 and 7 years old. he doesn't know if they are out of town possibly for ski week going on now. and no one saw any one escape what seems to have been a fast-moving fire. by the time sunny-veil fire arrived this house was -- >> we're obviously having technical problems with bob's live shot but they are continuing to hope that family is perhaps just on vacation and

not in the home. investigators expect to go back in this morning. 6:32 now. in oakland a stretch of a busy street shut down as police investigate a shooting. christie smith joins us with an update. >> reporter: good morning to you. oakland police have a mystery. a man was shot sitting in that car a. new car with paper plates. this happened on a busy street in west oakland. was the shooter on foot or in a car? they don't know. this is what they are trying to figure out. they received a call of a man shot in a car. officers found the victim with a bullet wound to the chest. but he was conscious when he was taken to the hospital. the car itself not really damaged. >> i don't think there's any bullet holes in the vehicle. pretty early in the investigation.

and we haven't located witnesses. we can't talk to the victim at this point. >> reporter: investigators are trying to find witnesses. when they arrived they were going door to door in west oakland but they haven't had much luck. i spoke with a few neighbors just waking up. they didn't hear any gun fire. 32nd and add a line was shut down when we alived but at this point it's pretty much opened northbound it is shut here, though, at 32nd which if you are coming southbound you would have to make a turn. now they are waiting for technicians to arrive and help process the seen. >> a developing story we continue to follow. investigators are looking into what caused a midair helicopter crash that killed seven marines. defense officials tell nbc news it happened near yuma, arizona.

they were conducting a training exercise when the choppers crashed in midair. the cause is under investigation. >> hit to hear that kind of thing. the math teacher accused of assaulting a teenage boy will be arraigned. johnson accused of having sex with a 14-year-old boy. the teacher started the relationship through text messages and the social media game words with friends. the alleged relationship started in december of 2010 and lasted six months. >> people in two neighborhoods waking up to the sound of gun fire. police say someone was shooting into the air on los palo avenue early tuesday morning. last thursday a similar incident occurred in another neighborhood. maria and liz found shell casings, called police. their home is down the street from where the shooter fired.

>> scary. you don't know what to do. you can't have your children out in the street. >> police are comparing casings to see if there is a connection. >> 6:35. the 23-year-old man accused of beating a man to death is expected to enter a plea. documents released reveal that a chilling confrontation saturday outside cukor's home. dewitt reportedly said he was a psychic looking for his fiancee zoe. his parents saying their son is a paranoid schizophrenic and there is no such woman. when he was told to leave he attacked, beating him to death with a ceramic pot. >> 6:36. police call vandalism a hate crime. parishioners at st. an's catholic church discovered the

our landmarks. it's going to be so nice. it's already warming up in place like sunnyvale. 51 degrees, we jumped up over two degrees. 48 in oakland and 58 in fairfield. as the winds continue to increase so will your temperatures. winds sustained out of the north at 12 miles per hour in santa rosa. calm conditions, though, from fairfield through half moon bay. we head throughout the day and it works like this. high pressure in the great basin driving our winds offshore. it's going to start to weaken a little bit so some cities will end up just about as warm if not a touch cooler. the cities getting the strong winds we're talking about 80s again for today. so it all works like this. we stop the clock, winds are going to pick up. that will continue through 10:00 a.m. we're going to keep the wind advisory in place until 6:00 p.m. you can see a lot of improvement in that department as you see all of this yellow, calm wind as

we wake up tomorrow no wind to report at that point so we're going to see a big change in terms of temperatures tomorrow morning between what we are experiencing out there right now. so here's what it looks like today. 80 in pleasant hill, 70 degrees in castro valley, 73 walnut creek. 80 in santa rosa. temperatures drop about 10 degrees tomorrow down to 62 saturday, mostly cloudy conditions on sunday. a few showers develop monday and next week look likes we're going to struggle to make it into the 60s even inland just about every day. a shower chance each day next week. a few systems will pass to our north. so overall things are going to change as of this weekend. let's check you're drive. >> 28 access, capital all the way 880.

bay bridge. back to you. >> mike, thank you. we are front and center on a still developing story this morning in sunnyvale. investigators getting ready to enter a home destroyed by fire to look for a family of four that may or may not be inside that house. bob redell is live at the scene. good morning. what's the latest? >> reporter: i spoke with a neighbor. he tells us he heard a mufrled explosion around 1:00. by the time he drove around front of this house, a retired firefighter he was surprised to see the house involved. a wall of flames. the fire department is waiting for an engineer to give them a green light to go in. they hope they don't find anything. they pray that the family of four who lives here was out of town when the fire destroyed the home. it is ski week. that's also -- always a possibility. but there is good reason to be concerned. there is a mom and dad and two

10:00. an argument led to gun fire and one man was ultimately hit in the leg. two people have been detained. police are looking for a third. >> it is 6:51. police are at the scene of a shooting that sent one man to the hospital. the crime scene in oakland closed a busy street. christie smith is live with the latest. >> reporter: someone opened fire on a man sitting in the car here but how it happened is unclear. the driver's side window is down, but the car is not shot up, no bullet holes. and they don't know if the shooter walked up to the car or drove by. it's a new car with bap plates, police tell me they got a call of a man shot in a car. they are not saying how many times he was shot only that he was conscious when he was taken to the hospital. this is a busy street adeline. they are having a hard time

absentee ballots in the past two elections. >> an update to breaking news out of arizona. a military training experience has turned tragic and deadly. marla tellez is in our newsroom. she has the latest on what we know. good morning. >> good morning. u.s. military officials confirming seven marines have been killed in a helicopter crash. this happened late last night just north of yuma, arizona. officials telling nbc news the marines were conducting a training exercise in two separate choppers when they collided in midair. one chopper was carrying five marines, the other had two. no one survived the crash. the seven marines were based at camp pendleton in southern california. the cause is under investigation. >> president obama spending part of his thursday apologizing to afghanistan's president in a letter he writes quote we'll take the appropriate steps to avoid recurrence including holding accountable those
