>> good morning everyone. the time now is 4:30. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. lots to get to this morning. let's check that forecast. good monday morning, christina. >> good morning to you. it is cold out there this morning. grab your jacket. and we actually have showers rolling through the south bay. most of the bay area is dry but your temperatures, oh, they are chilly, 41 in san jose, at subfreezing in santa rosa and napa at 30 degrees. as we head throughout the next two hours we'll continue to drop off. i'll show you the showers, how long we'll deal with those. mostly moving through morgan hill. that's coming up. see if mike has problems. >> we have an accident reported in the last few minutes. northbound 880 on the east bay out of the south through fremont. and it's stevenson from what i understand. more details to come in. no slowing shows up yet up to union city and newark. we'll give you the update as chp gives me more. so far doesn't sound like major

injuries. back to you. >> thank you. we are following breaking news out of oakland this morning. crews racing right now to put out a house fire on schuyler street near cap street. christie smith has the latest information. good morning. >> rebecca: good morning to you, jon. some of the residents are standing around this morning waiting for word on when they might be allowed back in. this is an active scene. this could have been much worse. an apartment building with 16 units catches fire in the middle of the night when people are sleeping. the first firefighters on scene tell me they had to find the fire here on schuyler and custer. they couldn't see it from the street. a single alarm that started 18 bedroom, they tell me. firefighters say that smoke detectors did work, but it was the smell that woke up some of the people in the building. firefighters went door-to-door, moving people quickly at 3:30

a.m. >> that was our initial thought was that we needed to evacuate and account for everybody. that went quickly due to the crews doing an excellent job. >> rebecca: firefighters are saying at this point they still don't know how it started. fire investigator is on the way. firefighters are going to do overhaul on the building to make sure everything is out. fortunately no injuries and except for the one unit where it started everyone should be allowed back in. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> this morning a hell's angel gang member accused of killing a fellow angel is in jail. police tracked down steven ruiz in fremont saturday night at a day's inn. officers believe ruiz snuck through a back entrance after a woman bought him a room for the night. ruiz surrendered. a witness described what he saw through a peep hole in a room

across the hall. >> i saw a guy come crawling up the hall and actually went past my door that i could see his feet, then they cuffed him and took him. then there's another lady that they told to crawl down the hallway as well. >> police say ruiz gunned down fellow angel member steve townsend in october 2011 at a funeral. police say they were stunned that ruiz was so close and they tracked him to stockton a couple of months ago. >> in a chilling interview a convicted serial killer apologizing to victims' families saying he knows where more bodies are buried. this weekend the so-called speed freak killer wesley shermantine apologizing for taking years to reveal the location of the victims' bodies. he also said there are more buried in modesto, stockton and milton. he has provided maps of several sites in calaveras and sherman

county. he and his now dead partner have been linked to 15 murder sprees. >> 4:34. san jose police are looking for a suspect after a string of weekend violence that killed a man and injured three. officers arrived at the intersection of chen and winston streets yesterday morning where they found one person shot. a half hour later three people were shot outside carlos goldstein's bar near oakland row. officers say gun fire broke out during a fight. two men were rushed to the hospital, one died from his injuries. a third man walked into the emergency room on his own. >> we don't know that it's gang related at this point. on its face it appears to be just a bar brawl gone bad. we know there was a fight, we know it spilled outside the bar and at one point one of the persons in one of the groups produced handgun and opened fire. >> police have not made any arrests. >> it is 4:35 now. walnut creek police nailing three men accused of running a

burglary ring up and down the state. investigators say these men used fake credit cards to buy gift cards at nordstrom's. they found the men in the store parking lot this weekend. inside their van police recovered more than $10,000 in gift cards and several stolen credit cards. police say the men are tied to similar crimes in other parts of the state. >> three bay area fire stations could consolidate to save money. san carlos council will meet. right now there are three stations within a mile of each other that respond to only a few call as day. the three cost $7.5 million but a joint station would cost as much as $4 million and split three ways. >> a check on your weather. meteorologist christina loren is here to tell us it felt like a colder start. is that more of the same? >> well, feeling like winter finally around here. good morning to you. temperatures are running cold, we're going to see the 20s

before we hit our lows this morning. and we're talking about temperatures in the 30s. very cold out there right now. good morning to you. temperatures right now in the 30s and 40s, 39 in san mateo, 43 in livermore and 41 degrees in san jose. we have a few showers on the radar this morning as well. and you can see those right now pushing past santa cruz into salin salinas. the next cupful hours that will be the case. we could see isolated action in the north bay through the next few hours. a weak disturbance, a cold front is coming through that's going to usher in cold weather. temperatures are going to struggle to break out of the 50s. 58 is the warmest i'm going and that will be in san jose. so, we'll let you know how much longer we'll deal with showers, when we get warmer weather here and we actually have a pretty good looking storm on the way. we'll talk about that. first we'll check your drive. >> folk, we'll take you for the update for the stevenson on ramp. that's where the accident is reported. it's off of the freeway as you

try to get on. no lanes are reported blocked and no injuries so activity to distract you as you get on the freeway in fremont and the rest of the drive moving nicely up through oakland and out of the area. we follow this up, though, for 880, traveling through the area past towards the maze and we do have the fire that christina reported. this is off 580 and fruit dale. that's the nearest major street. again, the apartment building was affected but not the travel toward the freeway. we should have no problem for the morning commute. we'll track this. back to the two of you with a live shot of oakland. >> thank you very much. a bay area nonprofit needs your help making high school dreams come true. the princess project is a cool project look forge new and nearly new prom dresses and accessories to help high school girls who could not afford to buy one. the san francisco nonprofit helped more than 18,000 girls since it was founded in 2002.

a look at your news before the bell we turn to brian shactman live at cnbc. good morning, brian. >> good morning, guys. stock futures lower after the mixed session on friday. but an overall positive week actually for the markets. the s&p now at its highest since mid 2008. there were several pretty good economic reports that offset concerns about rising oil and gas prices. asia and europe lower today. here in the u.s., busy week for economic data reports on durable goods, home prices, consumer confidence, manufacturing, and the final read on fourth quarter gdp. for today one, the latest news on pending home sales. the dow slipped 1 point to 12982. the nasdaq was up and the s&p added two to 1365. a federal judge delayed the civil trial over the bp gulf oil spill by a week. the trial had been scheduled to start today in new orleans but the judge says bp is making progress in settlement talks

with a committee that's overseeing thousands of lawsuits. the trial will determine the amount of damages bp and other companies must pay for the worst offshore oil spill in american history. speaking of american, american airlines is warning its unions that it needs to take -- make big changes to its labor contracts and do it quickly to achieve the cost savings to successfully make it through bankruptcy. american which filed for bankruptcy protection rejected proposals by two unions to offer buy-out packages, the carrier plans to cut about 13,000 people or 5% of its work force so a major change coming for american airlines if they stay in business. back to you. >> thank you very much, brian. >> it is 4:44 now. let's talk to meteorologist christina loren to find out what kind of weather we can expect. it was so good last week. tapering off. >> yeah, well, this is the coldest day, looks like. for some cities across the bay area, depends whether you are at the coast or inland. it's cold in the inland cities

in the 30s. we're only going to see the 20s later on. look at this, we have showers coming down across the bay area. a little area of low pressure right now moving into southern california. but we're seeing these very isolated cells move onshore. santa cruz getting rain, looking pretty good for the activity as we head through the next couple of hours. it will not last all day. look at where your temperatures are. 30 degrees in napa, 30 in santa rosa. it's a cold start out there. grab your jacket on the way out the door. if you are waking up in the south bay grab that umbrella. we'll see the shower activity die down through noon today, all of the action in southern california. by noon, temperatures climbing into the 40s, that's it in san mateo, 49 as you break for lunch there. 51 at noon in palo alto and 53 degrees here in san jose. so yeah, quite a stark difference from what we experienced the end of last week. 58 degrees in fremont today. round out the day in concord at 57. 56 for fairfield.

tomorrow. >> hang back there for a while, let all of the other cars in front of you wreck. then run hard in the last few laps and win the race. >> rebecca: sources tell nbc santorum will get secret service protection starting today. what he did not get is a key endorsement from arizona governor jan brewer. >> i decided i'm going to publicly endorse mitt romney. i think he's the man that can carry the day. >> that was at the arizona debate. can romney carry the day in michigan tomorrow? where he is averaging a slim 2-point lead over santorum. >> what we believe will come out of tuesday is that this is a two-person race right now. >> i think i can show that i can fight hard and come from behind. >> rebecca: romney says he thinks he can win the nomination as he put it however long it takes to get that done. >> it is increasingly looking like a delegate fight into the

spring, maybe the summer. in washington, i'm tracie potts. >> california governor jerry brown was on "meet the press" talking about immigration issues, talking about signing the california dream act which allows kids brought to the u.s. illegally to go to college and seek financial aid. he also argued the path to citizenship is the answer to border security. >> every president is trying to secure the border. the fact is these drugs generate billions of dollars in profit, guns from america go down to mexico, the dope comes up, the billions go down. it takes a collaborative work, mexico and the u.s., we've got to invest in mexico, give them all of the tools we can and work to get rid of the cartels but build up mexico so employment can be there instead of forcing people across the border. >> governor brown will remain in washington, d.c. where he will attend the final day of the national governors association winter meeting. president obama is expected to address the group today.

meryl streep added a third as ker with her best actress win for "the iron lady." she beat out rival viola davis of "the help" who was widely expected to win that category. >> when they called my name i had this feeling i could hear half of america going oh, no. oh, come on. >> best supporting actress to octavia spencer. christopher plummer was best supporting actor for the beginners being the oldest actor to win an oscar at the age of 82. >> still looks great, a great actor. when it comes to the oscars everybody has their favorites. at the party put on by the academy it was hard not to cheer for "moneyball." the film based on the a's and their shot at the world series in the oakland coliseum held special meaning for the fans who followed the a's during the time depicted. it looks at the 2001-02 season when billy bean was building

that winning ball club. >> it's very interesting in the story behind "moneyball" which talks about about the use of statistics to predict how a team should be composed of different players to bring out the best team, not necessarily the best players. >> people forget how revolutionary that stuff was back then. people weren't thinking about signing a guy like david justice after his yankee years, you know. >> people won't forget it now. blocked. that's another few minutes. crews should be clearing. that's where you may see slowing north of the 237 and 85 interchange. the rest of the south bay, a nice even flow for the northbound routes. to the san mateo bridge, highway 92 over the water looking good. there is a wind advisory posted by chp for the san mateo and bay bridges but the camera's not shaking. christina says it shouldn't be too big of a deal. chp apparently got a gust or two. >> it's 4:55 now. getting children off the couch and moving through the use of video games is growing in popularity. is it working? new research shows that kids are not necessarily more active by playing these games. two groups of children were monitored. one playing at the games, the others playing sitdown games. researchers found little difference between the two groups. >> i don't think this is so much discouraging as to me more of a reality check. >> health experts say active
