the gas. i'm jon kelley. we check in with meteorologist christina loren. we can laugh but that hurts. hopefully the weather doesn't get that painful. >> you're not going to use your ac that much because yeah, that will help because it's cold. you'll probably use your heater. later on today you can give it a break. we'll see the 50s today and 60s by tomorrow. but staying cool compared to where we were all week last week. look at where we've fallen in napa. 28 degrees. 29 in santa rosa and temperatures overall have not been this cold for about three weeks. make sure you're ready for it. i'll show you where you might need your umbrella come later this morning. we're looking dry across the board. >> we'll take folks to a live look at the bay bridge from across the bay. the oakland and the upper deck getting into the city. a camera trembling a tad. not a big deal. chp does warn about higher winds at times. they must have gotten caught with a gust or two.

we don't see major drama. oakland 880 and the camera steady, so is the flow of traffic. light now but construction on the southbound side might be a distraction. no major slowing. >> thank you, mike. we'll check back with you. 5:01. we're following developing news out of oakland, crews raced to put out a fire at an apartment complex at schuyler street. christie smith joins us with the latest. >> rebecca: good morning to you. it is pretty cold out here this morning and i just got an update from the battalion chief who says that this was an electrical fire and she blames it on an extension cord and a heater in one of the units. it really is unsettling night with firefighters banging on the doors banging to get out because the building was on fire. fire investigator just left the scene after figuring out how it started. a battalion chief says it

started 18 bedroom on the second floor overnight at about 3:30 in the morning. it's a 16-unit building. the woman in the unit told investigators that smoke alarms worked but it was the strong smell of smoke that woke her up and got her moving. the battalion chief says the first challenge after evacuating everyone was finding the fire. >> it was located in the back of the apartment. when the first crew did arrive there were no initial conditions on the scene. they were able to locate the fire quickly. >> the red cross is going to help the woman in the burn unit who appeared to have some breathing problems. she was transported to the hospital as a precaution. residents didn't want to speak with us on camera but they told us that they were shaken up and glad to be let back in. in fact, they just got back in maybe about 15 minutes ago. that's the latest. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> cleanup continues after a fire at a san jose home.

it started about with 1:00 a.m. near south seventh and key street. a two-alarm fire engulfed a shed being used to store scrap metal and furniture. several businesses suffered slight smoke damage. fortunately, nobody was injured. firefighters right now trying to figure out what started this fire. >> 5:03 now. san francisco police are looking for the driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run. the man behind the wheel of the pickup ran a red light about 3:30 sunday morning. the truck broadsided a town car, killing the driver. the man at fault fled. any one with information should call san francisco police. >> a new warning this morning after a string of robberies in palo alto. police say six break-ins friday morning. thieves pried open the front door of apartments stealing jewelry and electronics. two nearby homes were also hit.

officers say burglars often ring the door bell to see if anybody is home before entering. so far police have no suspects. >> redwood city police say they received reports of 60 burglaries. thieves posing as painters have hit dozens of homes. >> san carlos police also warning people to be on alert after two daytime burglaries last week. in both cases thieves entered through rear sliding glass doors. police say make sure to lock your doors and windows before you leave your home. so far there are no arrests in these cases. >> a decision is expected today on whether san jose state will toughen admission standards. they talked about with eliminating preferial treatment. right now incoming students have to meet only the minimum requirements to be accepted. university says state budget cuts are making it impossible to continue that policy.

they will announce what they will decide. >> new this morning, russia's prime minister on edge after an alleged assassination plot against him is stopped by authorities. marla tellez is in the newsroom with the latest. good morning. >> good morning. once russia's president, now the country's prime minister, vladamir putin is feeling some relief as a plan to kill him goes bad. russian officials are confirming reports from ukraine that special services detained two people, one of them seen here in this police video. they say the men are part of a group that reportedly planned to travel to moscow to assassinate putin after the march 4th presidential election next sunday. officials say the men want to create an islamic state in russia's north caucuses. in afghanistan the backlash against the u.s. continues over the accidental burning of the koran. at least nine people are dead after a car bomb detonated outside a military airport in

eastern afghanistan this morning. the taliban is claiming responsibility for today's attack, calling it revenge for the koran burning. the u.s. military is still investigating the incident that took place at a nato air base. now to london. a settlement has been reached in the phone hacking scandal involving ruper murdock's news of the world and charlotte church. the teen singing sensation in now in her 20s was awarded $951,000 from news international. church was present at london's high court to hear the ruling. the court agreed that her family's voice mails were hacked by murdoch's journalists when she was just 16. just yesterday murdoch launched a new british tabloid. >> it's 5:06. a group of teen boys face criminal charges after allegedly going on a vandalism spree in

livermore. the five boys admitted to launching river rocks at homes and cars while driving through a number of neighborhoods last weekend. they left a trail of damage and debris, breaking windows, walls and mail boxes. surveillance video caught their car on camera. witnesses recognized it and reported it to police. >> the drunk driver who shut down muni service during a morning commute striking a deal with prosecutors, scott mitchell pleading no contest to dui charges stemming from the january 19 incident. police say his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit so when he drove his car right into the tunnel at church and debow street, shutting down service for most of the morning. under the deal mitchell will serve three years probation and community service, plus he must attend dui classes. >> newt gingrich is back on the campaign trail this morning after spending the weekend at california's republican convention here in the bay area. during the visit gingrich took swipes at it obama's energy policy accusing him of letting

oil prices to spike to punish americans for driving big cars. gingrich said he would bring gas prices down to $2.50 a gallon by allowing more drilling and authorizing the keystone pipe line from canada to the gulf of mexico, something environmentalists oppose. the number of registered republicans in california has fallen from 35 to 30% in the past decade. >> 5:08 now. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren joining us in the nbc bay area weather center. >> good morning to you. we've got a good looking day shaping up. we are go withing to see a little bit of shower activity early. that's what we're noticing. but overall looking toward a nice second half of the day. let's talk about what's happening on the radar. you can see a few showers from santa cruz down through salinas. we did have activity earlier at gilroy and morgan hill. the showers are rapidly falling apart over the santa cruz mountains. we're not seeing that much action in the south bay.

isolated shower or two a possibility as we head throughout the morning especially down south. 41 degrees in san jose. you're at 43 in livermore, 37 in concord and you are now in the 20s, something we haven't seen for a while in santa rosa and napa. we are very, very cold up there and we have a lot of early bloom because of the very warm conditions we've had so far this winter. so, make sure if you are someone who can protect your sensitive plants that you try to do so this morning. 52 in fremont, 51 in palo alto and 52 by noon today, that's it. we're going to see temperatures in the 50s, no 60s on your temperature map. 58 for fremont, 57 in concord. and just 54 degrees in san francisco. we've got a really good looking storm on the way. this one's kind of fizzling out right now but there is a great looking storm on the way for showers later on this week we'll talk about when in my seven-day outlook coming up in my next report. let's check your drive. >> good morning. we'll take to you the maze and

first of all the maze approaching the bay bridge not a problem. easy light flow. it's 5:10. the 880 connection there, with the construction south of 980 and heading out of downtown, crew blocking a lane. we don't see slowing. the fire, the apartment fire that christie smith is following is off of fruitvale and there is not enough smoke to cause an issue. it shouldn't be a problem for the morning commute. we continue to follow the story. so far no injuries and that's good news. we'll move here to antioch, highway 4 we're looking at a smooth drive westbound with the 60 at l street. construction will be a distraction and brentwood has an accident. we'll follow this as well. back to you. >> thank you. proposed changes to san francisco's contract with the pga tour will be made public today. the revisions call for at least two major tournaments at the city's harding park over the

next decade. the proposal includes the possibility of the president's cup returning to harding as soon as 2017. revisions will be discussed at a recreation and park operations committee on thursday. somebody could do this shot again if they tried. pro golfer lee westwood knocking the shot of a lifetime. check it out. off the tee during the match play yesterday. he hit the ball in the crowd. not sure where it went. he walked over. a woman showed him where it landed. right down her collar into the back of her sweater. believe it or not westwood stepped up, thanked the lady, grabbed the ball and got a par on the show. >> hopefully he signed it for her. something for the effort. >> no way. must have hurt. a lot of commotion at the academy awards but drama on the red carpet before the show. >> the interesting thing is

>> welcome back everyone. well, i guess there is nothing quite like a miracle image on a piece of food to get an ebay auction a little publicity. the latest offering none other than a mcdonald's chicken mcnugget with what they say they believe it looks like ex-president george washington. take a look. i don't know if i'm seeing that. bids topped $10,000 before ebay pulled it off for violating expired food laws. the auction line on the site there said they had a change of heart after learning it was part of a fund-raiser for a church camp. the the nugget is back on. george's likeness is back there.

bidding at $4,000. >> no kidding. what are they going to do with it? >> maybe get barbecue sauce. >> interesting. look at the food more closely. >> for a good cause. >> want to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> when i'm hungry, i'm not observing them that closely. they are going in. never mind. let's get to your weather forecast this morning. it's cold enough for a hot cup of coffee, maybe warm oatmeal because temperatures have fallen into the 20s. as we head throughout this afternoon, we're only going to end up in the mid-50s in some cities. what's kind of awesome right now, we actually have showers coming down at the coldest point of the day. the very highest peaks of the santa cruz mountains might get a dusting of snow. right now that's not the case. we're going to cool off as we head to the next couple hours. that means temperature at 40 in sunnyvale will likely fall to 38 degrees. 39 now in oakland.

it's chilly even by the water. and you're at 29 degrees in santa rosa. so it's a cold stafrmt high pressure has moved out of the area. low pressure is moving in. it's going to usher in cold air as we head throughout day. cloudy for the most part. temperatures on the mild side ending up in the 50s about everywhe everywhere. so this is what we expect. 58 in fremont. about 53 degrees in san francisco. 56 in santa rosa. no 80s on the temperature map. but if you are looking for the warmth, if you want to get outdoors you're going to get plenty of opportunities because temperatures climb right back up into the 70s as we head toward the end of the week. we've got to get to a pretty potent storm wednesday into thursday. a look at your weekend temperatures up to 66 degrees, saturday, 67 for sunday. so getting that warm-up after we get through a quick taste, a quick blast of winter. let's check your drive with mike. >> looks like a rougher commute tinl few days ahead. right now we're looking at a

smooth drive. the south bay, they are all close to the limit or a little more than the limit so watch. chp is enforcing the limit. 101, both directions passing by the area between ricedorf and old middlefield. there are construction crews there. a little slowdown. looks like it's sorteded itself out but it's still there. they may have cleared over the next few minutes. that might be why we saw the slowing. also on the move over the water the san mateo bridge, highway 92, let's get a live look and see how things are shaping up over the water. the dumbarton bridge at the top, that was no problem for 84 and 92 over from the peninsula over to the east bay. an easy drive as well. the sign here just off to the edge says high wind. chp warns about it for san mateo and the bay bridge but we haven't seen the camera shaking. chp got 1/4 a gust or two so keep that in mind. we'll end with the hayward side. 880, through downtown, construction on the southbound

side should be cleared from down town. >> thank you, mike. 5:18 now. rising oil prices have pushed trading down in world markets this morning. for a look at how u.s. futures are trading we turn to brian shactman. good morning. >> good morning. that's right. stock futures are lower after a mixed session on friday, but overall a pretty good week last week. the s&p at its highest since mid 2008 as several good reports offset concerns about with rising oil and gas prices. asia and europe lower, a busy week for economic data, reports on durable goods, home prices, consumer confidence, personal income and spending, manufacturing and the time reed on fourth quarter gdp p. today one, the latest on pending home sales. the dow down to 12,982 t nasdaq up to 2963 and the s&p up two to 1365. i'm sure we've heard a lot about this, americans feeling the pain at the pump. the average price for egg

unleaded up 18 cents in the past two weeks, $3.69 a national average. probably more where you guys are. according to the latest, gas up 30 cents for the month. analysts say higher food prices, the jitters with iran, a lot of supply in most parts of the country. cars, the ford family made their fortune selling hundreds of millions of them. but company chairman bill ford jr. worried selling too many. he says automakers and government should team up on technology to address the issue. ford is investing in systems to help cars avoid traffic jams, reserve parking spaces and even drive themselves. but guys, i've seen the demos. you get in an accident who is going to be liable? doesn't make sense to me. but -- no. would you? >> no. i like to turn around and look

back. >> i don't know. i'm ready for the jetsen's part of life but not that yet. >> there you go. thanks so much, brian. >> teachers at several oakland high schools facing a tough choice reapplying for a new teaching position or finding a new job. the new positions called accelerated tsa or teacher on special assignment. it includes more money for working a longer school year and more responsibilities. teachers at castle mont and fremont and mcklemins must apply or face transfer to another school. the oakland district says the new positions will improve student learning. >> it's 5:21. turns out the alcatraz backdrop on a new tv series is -- the series is not filmed on the rock. it's filmed nearly 1,000 miles north in vancouver. production did spend about two weeks in san francisco last year shooting footage of the island

the suit. it says the environmental impact report is inadequate. >> this morning facebook is denying a report accusing the company of reading text messages on android phones. facebook says its app for android doesn't read or write text, at least for most users. somebody says testing of the app required the sms part of the phone to talk to facebook's app. facebook says permission to read texts included permission to preseef process and write text like a lot of other communication apps. check out the permissions tab on your facebook page for more detailed information. >> protect your stuff. 5:25. the review site yelp set to go public. scott, it's been a long time coming. >> yelp stirred through its own controversies, now street offer shares to the public for the first time. we expect on friday it will trade under yelp, what else, we've seen several high tech ipo

all with mixed results. yelp the review site, you can check out a plumber's reputation or see what others think of a restaurant. half of the traffic comes from google. yelp warns google has removed the links to our website from portions of its web search product. promoted its own competing products in its search results. we get the unemployment report also on friday. the most recent report from the month of january was spectacular. relatively speaking. with nearly a quarter million jobs added in the month. the unemployment rate sits at 8.3%. tech news, nokia revealed a new phone, the least expensive phone on the market in the smart phone category. $250. nokia used to be the most upon you lar phone maker in the world five years ago until the iphone was introduced. nokia believes there is still a

hours. it is cold, make sure you're ready for it. i'll tell you when the showers arrive coming up. first, let's check your drive with mike. >> temperature shifts, i'm confused, so are the blossoms outside. we're looking to the roadways where there are no blossoms but an accident. 880 southbound at high street. so outside of our camera range at the coliseum, we don't see slowing, but it does involve a big rig. a big rig that was hit on the shoulder. does not sound like lanes are blocked but i'll track this. could be a problem if there is traffic issue. we'll come back with an update. >> thank you. >> new this morning, people sound asleep awakened aboutpy the smell of smoke as flames rip through an apartment complex in oakland. firefighters say an electrical cord and a heater sparked this fire in a bedroom at a 16-unit apartment complex on schuyler street. at first it was very tough for firefighters to find the fire. it wasn't visible from the street. working smoke detectors helped

insure people got out. firefighters went door-to-doord. >> this morning a hell's angel gang member accused of killing a fellow angel is in jail. police tracked down 38-year-old steve ruiz in fremont saturday night at the fremont day's inn. officers believe he snuck in through a back entrance after an unidentified woman bought him a room for the night. ruiz surrendered after officers surrounded the inn. a witness described what he saw through a peep hole in a room across the hall. >> saw the guy, a guy come crawling up the hall and actually went past my door, i could see his feet. then they cuffed him and took him. then there's another lady that they told to crawl down the hall way as well. >> police say ruiz gunned down steve townsend in october 2011 at a funeral. san jose police say they were stun head was so close.

they tracked him to stockton. >> it was a chilling interview, a convicted serial killer apologizing to victims' families and says he knows where more bodies are buried. this weekend so called speed freak killer wesley shermantine apologizing for taking years to reveal the locations of the bodies. he also said there are more buried bodies in modesto, stockton, ripon and milton. he provided maps of several sites. shermantine and his dead partner loren herzog are linked to a murder spree. police are looking for witnesses. officers arrived yesterday morning where they found one person shot. a half hour later three people were shot outside carlos goldstein's bar near oakland road.

officers say gun fire there was a result of a fight. two men were rushed to the hospital. one died. a third man walked into the emergency room on his own. police have not made any arrests. >> a crucial portion of san francisco's sheriff ross mirkarimi's trial starts today. pretrial motions will be heard on what evidence can be admitted. among them statements by mirkarimi's wife to two neighbors about alleged domestic abuse as well as a videotape taken by one of the neighbors of lopez crying and showing a bruise on her arm. mirkarimi accused of causing that bruise. the sheriff does not have to appear in court today. lopez has publicly denounced the case against her husband. >> the 11th straight year in the red, city leaders r hoping that residents will be open to higher taxes. bob joins us with some of the options on the table. >> reporter: good morning.

yes, when san jose city council meets tomorrow here at city hall, that is one of the topics that will come up, the possibility of a sales tax increase. mayor chuck reed wants the city to poll is residents to see how open they are to the possibility of a quarter cent to half cent increase in the current 8.25% sales tax. which would bring in from 35 to 70 million dollars a year, enough to put a dent in the budget deficit f. there is enough support the city would probably try to put this on the ballot in november. the argument against the new sales tax that city needs to cut employee expenses first which the mayor says he is trying to do with the nash goes before voters in june. new tax could be a hard sell considering that the sales tax is already going to rise in july by 1/8 cent to help pay for b.a.r.t. to san jose and governor jerry brown is looking for a half cent sales increase in november to help with the

state's budget deficit. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> three fire stations could consolidate to save money. the san carlos council meeting today to talk about closing one of its fire stations and creating a joint one with redwood city and parts of unincorporated san mateo. right now there are three stations within a mile of each other that respond to a few calls per day. the stations cost $7.5 million but a joint station could save about $3.5 million so $4 million and would be split three ways. >> we want to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. dress warmer as you head out the the door. >> yeah. you're going to need that jacket basically all day long. good morning to you. temperatures are running much colder than we've seen for the past three weeks. we are near record low territory up in the north bay this morning. down to the south bay it's another scenario. showers coming down over santa cr cruz. a lot of this is starting to

wind down. that will continue to be the case as we head throughout the morning. you can see here back throughout the pacific we still have spotty activity that could push on shore over the course of the next couple hours. but it's the cold more of a factor this morning than the showers that are coming down light in nature. 41 degrees in san jose, cold start there. 40 in sunnyvale and at 38 degrees on the peninsula this morning. san mateo really cold and we have the 20s, upper 20s in santa rosa and napa. you have time to bring in the sensitive plants you probably want to do so. the coldest point the next hour. 1:00 p.m. temperatures in the 40s in some cities. so it's going to be one of those days you look out the window, you'll see the sunshine a mix of sun and clouds but deceptive with temperatures only climbing into the 50s. 53, that's it for san francisco. 56 in napa. and 58 degrees in fremont. we stay cool tomorrow, then the showers arrive. periods of rain at times as a

matter of fact on wednesday. we'll talk about that coming up but first let's check your drive. >> listen to this. a couple of things i'm not saying are related. we're looking at southbound 880 at high street. reports of the earlier hit and run accident. it was a big rig and chevy blazer. the blazer remains on the scene. the big rig kept going. the southbound side, there is the activity there but no lanes are blocked. that's the good news south toward the coliseum. but then over the last few minutes a new report shows up talking about a big rig with some front end damage and parts hanging off of the front and looks like the driver's not aware of that. this is a big vehicle so it's possible if this was involved in an accident further north they might not know that. so chp following this. we'll follow it as well no. one injured as a result. just interesting times there. highway 4 for the westbound direction kicking off pretty widespread. back to you. >> thanks for the update.

>> welcome back. getting up at this early hour we're all guilty of hitting that snooze button once in a while before getting out of bed. i was guilty of that. you are sleep deprived, you are not alone. tracie potts is live with a look at new sleep deprivation studies. quick question. are californians getting enough sleep? >> reporter: not all of them. 17% say they have got sleep

problem, 19% say one in five say it's affecting them during the day. it's spilling over and causing fatigue during the daytime. the university of pennsylvania had researchers who analyzed cdc data. they came up with a state by state breakdown and also interesting national facts. one in four of us reporting a moderate to severe sleep problem. often affecting what we do during the day. interestingly, it's not just our health or the daytime hours, the nighttime hours that are affected but more often they found mental health, race, ethnicity, whether you have health insurance all having an impact on whether you are getting enough sleep. people out west, much less likely to have sleep problems than those in the south and other parts of the country. the national sleep foundation says adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. a lot of us not getting that. it leads to chronic disease and can aggravate chronic problems like diabetes, depression, high

de la cruz there is an accident and guardrail damage. all lanes are cleared but this may be distraction if crews have to head throughout. usually they wait until later on in the day, lighter volume of traffic and fix that going on there. north, 101 between the city and the north bay for the golden gate bridge. the flow of traffic here north out of the city. not a big deal. a couple of northbound lanes, easy southbound. the bay bridge, no metering lights so we'll pick up on this in a couple of minutes. >> breaking and scary news out of ohio a. gun man went only a high school campus and started shootsing. this happened about 7:30 this morning. 30 miles east of cleveland. at this point it remains unclear how many people have been shot. the shooter we can tell you has left the campus but at this point has not been arrested. schools in the area remain on lockdown. marla tellez is in the newsroom working hard on this following this. we'll have all of the latest in
