going to be cool but enjoy, it's going to get wet. >> yes, it's going to get wet as of tonight. in the bay area we need the rain. we've been talking about what a mild winter we've had. winter only three weeks left at this point. and we are going to get a quick blast of it as of tonight into tomorrow. temperatures are cold this morning. colder than yesterday even at 31 in napa, 39 in san jose. we'll track the showers for you, time them out for your city coming up. first let's see if there are problems on the road with mike. >> with that storm system coming in we do have winds bringing that weather in and we have a wind advisory for the san mateo bridge issued by chp. also a disabled vehicle as you approach the high rise should be off to the shoulder but use cautions a you head westbound. san jose, coming through the middle of the screen, northbound with the headlights, that's where i hear about wires down. we'll follow that. i'll let you know where and what is affected.

>> we begin with breaking news out of ohio. the medical examiner's office is confirming another student has died after being shot at the school yesterday. marla tellez joins us with the new information. >> law remarks 17-year-old russell king jr. is the second student to die from his injuries. doctors pronouncing him brain dead early this morning. king was one of the five students shot at chardon high school by t.j. lane. lane is scheduled to be arraigned in juvenile court this afternoon. that's 12:30 our time. the 17-year-old was a student at a vocational school and today we're learning he reportedly lived with his grandparents. students say he calmly walked into the high school cafeteria yesterday and then began shooting. this morning lane's attorney says he's not sure what sparked the rampage. >> t.j. is a very -- fairly quiet and good kid.

his grades are pretty impressive. he's pretty much sticks to himself but does have some friends and he's never been in trouble. >> this morning two students remain hospitalized. one in critical condition. a second in serious. russell king jr. the student who died this morning was reportedly dating the suspected shooter's ex-girlfriend. chardon high is closed though grief counselors will be on site as a precaution. i can tell you a major candle light vigil is planned for tonight at a local church. laura. >> tragedyics. thank you, marla. it's 5:03. a difficult discussion on the agenda for the san jose city council. members will start looking at whether to pursue a ballot measure that would raise the city's sales tax. the council put off the decision a couple weeks ago to have more time to figure out strategies to solve the budget shortfall. the tax proposal could be part

of a special election to avoid competing in local tax measures on the june and november ballots. >> drug sniffing dogs could roam high school grounds in pleas san on the. the district expected to vote on a new policy f. passed dogs would inspect gym lockers while students are in class and check cars in the lot. there was a rise in drug related suspensions at three high schools. >> the district will consider $5.5 million in cuts tonight. pleasanton schools may be forced to eliminate counselors to try and balance the budget. elementary schools could also lose s some reading support sta. if governor brown's tax initiatives are not passed more cuts could be needed. >> in the dublin the school board will consider a bond measure to help improve schools. $99.9 million bond measure is the second in eight years to build and improve school buildings and equipment.

the board will meet to vote on placing it on the june 5th ballot. it would cost $29 a year per $100 of assessed value. >> a large homeless camp under an overpass will be gone soon. police giving emliving in the area, they have been given 72 hours notice to pack up and leave. caltrans crews will then move in to clean out the area. >> smoke is still rising this morning at a mountain view apartment complex where a four-alarm car destroyed several units. for some they don't know what is left of their apartments. bob redell is joining us live from the dana garden apartments with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. today it's the apartment's duty to try to find out what caused the apartments here in mountain view to go up in flames. this was the kind of fire, one so large, intense, that it kept

firefighters on the scene more than 12 hours later to put out hot spots and make sure nothing lights up again. it did happen last night. a hot spotlighting up. it has been uneventful ever since. a fire investigator will begin their hunt for answers looking for the source of ignition. i mentioned this fire was so intense the fire department had to call for a fourth alarm yesterday afternoon. everyone was able to escape. one firefighter was hurt, a minor injury, at least five units destroyed and five have sustained smoke and water damage. when you do the math that adds up to 25 people without a home. they are either relying 0en the help of family and friends or the red cross which did rush to the scene when they heard about this fire. reporting live in mountain view, rob redell, "today in the bay." >> police this morning looking for the person who shot and killed a man after a brawl outside a bar. officers say anthony salazar was

killed sunday morning. they say it's not gang related but will not officially state a motive. the san jose "mercury news" reporting the fight was over a woman and escalated into a brawl involving more than 30 people. two other people were shot but will survive. it was the city's fifth homicide of the year. >> 5:07. the america's cup in san francisco almost a done deal. supervisors will vote on a final agreement. to make sure things get done on time organizers are ditching plans to renovate piers 30 to 32. instead they will be at pier 80. exhibition races start in august. the main event next year. >> santa clara county cracking down on salt, fat and sugar. today, county leaders could approve new nutritional standards for food or drink ordered at county facilities.

the rules wouldn't ban junk foods but would require healthy options at the state fair, how do you do that. the rules would go into effect july 1. >> one elementary school has a hole in it after an suv rammed into the building. palo alto weekly report the teenage driver backed into a tree on saturday and then panicked and hit the gas. engineers are brought in to assess the structural damage there. no one was injured and the teen will not be charged. >> it is 5:08. meteorologist christina loren joins us in the weather center to tell us about a cool and eventually wet day. >> yeah, you know, we're not going to see the showers until tonight. but this time tomorrow morning we're talking about a sloppy commute. so, this morning, a little frost out there, patchy fog. but nothing that's going to slow you down that much when it comes to the weather.

third snow survey of the winter. the good news is that snow fell last night, padding it a little bit. so far the snow survey hasn't been great. we are below average this year but at least it's not like the ground that they saw. >> they pumped in fake snow, right. the question is, this rain going to help the snowfall? >> it is. this is looking very optimistic for all of you skiers and snowboarders. so that's looking promising. it's a cold storm and we're cold throughout so that cold air in place is going to help to bring the snow levels down to maybe 3,000 feet come thursday morning. maybe high atop our own mt. hamilton a little custing. we'll be able to see that. 45 in oakland, 45 in san mateo on the way to the mid-50s again, low pressure on the way. it's going to drag the cold front through the area.

we'll see our first showers but it's a cold system. low snow levels starting tonight i think at about 5500 feet. they will come down to 3,000 feet. wednesday is the washout day. probably the best day to avoid doing so. you can see showers come in, the front arrives at about 11:00. showers move to the south, 5:00 a.m. when we meet back here your roads will be slick but mike and i will be here to guide you. showers continue all day long tomorrow by 5:00 p.m. starting theget clearing. you'll have to deal with the sloppy commute home, another round of rain, then we clear out friday through the weekend and warm up to 70 degrees by monday. we'll talk more about snow, which cities are expecting the most. first let's check your drive. >> folks, talk about local roads we have construction improving the situation for the al costa

2266. home depot and lowes are hiring thousands of temp workers. home depot is hiring 70,000 people across all departments. lows is adding 40 thousand. these are temporary, they are often the foot in the door to a full time position. about half of the seasonal hires stayed on full time. regulators will be required to install rear view cameras in all vehicles by 2014. the national highway safety administration will spend the new rule to congress. estimate s will cost $200 per vehicle. i'm not sure the that's something we're watching. back to you. >> my guess is it will and more det get passed back to us. >> mess are on the hunt for an arsonist who set fire to the

it will protect from blackouts but people say it's overkill and threatens to create a scar on the line. until recently pg&e trimmed the trees but the federal government is fining utilities for outages caused by vegetation so pg&e wants to cut the trees to avoid the fine. >> it's been an eye sore. something might be done about the house. the board expected to order the homeowner to clean up the mountain of garbage. that is not pretty the property lit erd with just about anything you can think of the junk so high you can, no joke, see it from satellite in space. that's a big pile. the owner can defend himself on march 12. >> it is 5:24.

yahoo! is on the attack. scott joins us, facebook has been around for years. why did yahoo! wait? >> that's the multi-million-dollar question, the theory is it's part of the new yahoo!'s ceo's strategy to find money where he can. the tech world let out a collective groan. patent fights are generally considered to be a low blow. just about anybody could claim they own an idea. that said just about every company engages in those fights. facebook can't launch a pr push to address these because it's in its quiet period before its ipo. the state of california tried to figure out how much it might make from the ipot best guess in half a billion for this fiscal year. all collected from the new facebook millionaire, not enough to make a dent in the state

coastal towns were waiting for the waves, the water drew back. then the waves hit. places like santa cruz and crescent city hit hard. boats and har bers crushed. now the white house is consider ing cutting from the tsunami preparedness program. one area that concerns scientists is cuts to funding for a collection of early detection buoys out in the ocean. they provide some important information for things like when waves might hit land and how big those might be. one exert says it's nothing about earthquake preparedness that our memory isn't that long. another potential cut, programs that educate the p public on critical things like evacuation

routes. the buoys are anchored to the ocean floor. under this it might take longer to repair them if damaged. this is all part of the proposed budget for 2013. hive at sogs beach. in oakland and 43 degrees in livermore. right at fazing in gilroy. yesterday morning we were gold that the time but 3 or 4 degrees cooler. area of low pressure is going to bring us rainfall. we're talking potentially an inch, maybe inch and a half in some cities over wednesday into thursday. we need the rain. something else we haven't seen so far, low snow levels, possibly down to 2,000 feet because this is not only a noosy system, it's also a cold system too that's good news. probably going to get more snow out of this. you can see by 5:00 a.m. wednesday, steady rain all the way through 1:00 p.m. then a nice dry break as we head through wednesday night. i'll let you know how much rain we expect in your city, how much snow we expect in the error in

concern, romney has a comfortable lead averaging about 13 points ahead there. he is expected to win. that's a win or take all state. 29 delegates. the 30 delegates in michigan are going to be proportioned so he could get some action santorum could get some. gingrich and ron paul aren't big contenders but they could get delegates as well. the polls have been back and forth. they had romney and santorum up and down, they are tied at this point although the latest polls looking at yesterday and sunday are skewing more toward mitt romney. again, that's what the pundits are saying. he needs to win this. the candidates themselves have been back and forth at each other. romney saying that santorum hasn't had experience in the private sector. santorum pulled out an op-ed in "the wall street journal" calling romney's tax plan obama style class warfare. making calls to democrats to come out and vote. keep in mind this is an opry

mary. and before the polls even close today guess where santorum is headed, to ohio, focusing on super tuesday. romney is outspending him almost 3 to 1. >> tracie potts, thank you. meantime, president obama getting a boost in the polls from female voters. women viewing the president with a positive outlook as the economy improves and social issues including birkt control dominated. i'm sure his crooning of al green didn't hurt. the poll suggests that more women than men are giving the president credit for turning the economy around since december the president's approval rating on how he handled the economy and unemployment has jumped 10 percentage points. >> 5:44. london counting down the days to opening ceremonies. this giant olympic rings late last night. the rings are 36 feet tall, 82 feet wide, they will be prominently displayed on the river thames until the end of
