>> that indeed was a spectacular shot. let's hope the day feels like that. i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. lots to get to this morning. let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> good morning. we needed the rain, we've got a little more on the way this morning. and this morning we're expecting most of the shower activity through the south bay. your sweeping radar shows you the time currently we're nice and dry. i'll tell you when those showers will let up and how much warmer we're going to be this weekend. we're oh, so close now. first, mike has something that could slow you down. >> this is out of lanes but a lot of activity. there is a deadly accident that happened about 3:00 this morning as folks are approaching the bay bridge on 880 northbound, you're going to see activity because after motorcycle accident, accident involving a motorcycle. it's at the bottom of the ramp.

from northbound 880 up toward berkeley and emeryville, that's the transition, light volume right now but the roadways may still be slick from rains. and all of this activity, so if be prepared for flashing lights. we'll track this activity, hopefully they will have things moving but it's off to the shoulder. back to you with that way to start the day. >> thank you, mike. >> we start things out with an occupy event out on the cal campus. >> protesters will gather to support student demonstration at cal state campuses. christie smith is live in berkeley where hundreds will demand education reform. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. when we were here earlier for the occupy cal encampments the students told us it was leading up to this day. students and some faculty going to be rallying, they are going to start around 7:30 this morning to support public education. and they really are saying they want to come out strong against any state budget cuts that would

affect education and make it really unaffordable with the tuition hikes going on and causing outrageous student debt. activists plan to start with a protest this morning outside of california hall where they say many upper administrators are working, planning teach-outs as they have done, holding classes outside near sprawl hall. then a big noon time rally and a march a little later to oakland to meet up with other east bay schools that are participating in this. similar actions again starting at dozens of other east bay schools. this kicks off an ambitious march from the bay area all the way to sacramento where an even bigger protest is planned for march 5th. some students are saying that they are also calling on the governor to support a millionaire's tax, they say that is one of the only ways to try and keep public education affordable. reporting live, christie smith,

"today in the bay." >> a livermore middle school reopening after a very tense situation last night. the east avenue campus was locked down following a report that somebody saw a gunman there. the school is down the road from livermore high. police did go door-to-door searching for a man. after a 2 1/2 hour search police found no signs of the man. >> the family of a young woman who disappeared in 1985, finally has some closure. the remains of chevy wheeler were discovered in calaveras county. investigators say wheeler was one of the victims of the speed freak killers. her parents arrived to receive their daughter's remains. her mother paula says she never lost hope. >> we never gave up to find her. we looked and we looked and we wanted to find her so bad. >> convicted serial killer wesley shermantine revealed where he buried wheeler's body.

>> pot clubs taking a hit from a federal judge. several medical marijuana suppliers and patients filed lawsuits last year to protest the crackdown on the drug. the "san francisco chronicle" reporting this week a judge in sacramento became the first to dismiss one of those suits, saying the justice department will enforce federal drug laws. the judge's decision allowing federal prosecutors to continue its campaign that shut down several dispensaries in california. >> we obtained new photos of a suspect wanted for torturing a man for his atm card pin. here is a look at images from a gas station near santa cruz over the weekend. the person is one of three suspects accused of kidnapping and torturing a man they met at a bar. the deputies say the three took the ctim's atm card pin number and his 1991 red nissan sentra. the alleged attack occurred at the santa cruz inn.

all three suspects are possibly from the bay area, and may be traveling with a black dog. >> a peninsula special ed teacher accused of physically abusing students expected in court. she will be arraigned on nine misdemeanor charges including child endangerment. she's accused of twisting a student's wrist and kicking a child in the stomach. the alleged abuse happened in december and january at roosevelt elementary school in redwood city. she is on administrative leave. >> 4:36 now. a peninsula cemetery hit by copper they've, 500 metal flour vases were taken from gravesites at cypress lawn memorial park. 4500 pounds of metal holders, estimated value of $5,000 were taken. managers say it will cost about $85,000 to replace those and they have thousands more to protect. >> b.a.r.t. police giving the public a chance to see how they train officers.

they will hold a public training session. people have a chance to see what it's like to be a member of the police force. b.a.r.t. will skrus crisis intervention, rules of arrest and give a demonstration with a canine. other training will be tomorrow in concord. >> an effort to dishandle a reservoir in yosemite is one step closer to the ballot. a group filed an initiative to put the issue before voters. the reservoir is san francisco's primary water source. environmentalists would like to drain it to restore the natural habitat of the valley. the group needs to collect nearly 10,000 signatures by july 9 to put this initiative on the ballot. >> a check of the forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. see how march is looking. first day. >> yeah, first day, we're so close to the weekend now, a great looking weekend for all of you outdoor enthusiasts. we'll see great outdoor weather with temperatures climbing into the 70s. we're going to climb quickly.

today will be on the cool side. tomorrow we're back in the 60s and then the 70s arrive as you head into saturday. sunday the warmest day. mid 70s down through the south bay. this morning we have a few showers on the radar, they are very light. and mostly concentrated up in the north bay. throughout the morning hours we'll consistently see light showers pushing on shore from time to time until about noon. then we'll get a dry break and the warm-up will start as high pressure moves back in. it's cold this morning, about 10 degrees cooler than this time yesterday. 42 in sunnyvale. 47 in novato. noon, mostly cloudy. 52 inland and round out the day, 52, mix of sun and clouds as you make your way home from work. tomorrow morning once the clouds clear we should be able to see all of that snow high atop the mountain peaks so that's great news for us, great for skiers who want to hit the slopes. i'll have that report coming up. first your drive. >> heading to the sierra bring

those chains because of changing conditions. also changing conditions. the right lane blocked at the transition northbound 880 to eastbound 80 as i reported at the top of the show, a deadly accident involving a motorcycle is there at the transition, right at the maze. folks traveling north maybe heading to the bay bridge you might see flashing lights. connecting over to westbound 80, that is your upper deck, the toll plaza approaching smoothly. a live look off the upper right of the screen we see folks coming off of the transition, no delays and no slowing. so it's not affecting the toll plaza. 880 northbound past the coliseum, a light volume at the the toll plaza approaching the area through oakland. shows speeds at 60 or above. we're watching for slick roads as the sun has not come out so it can't dry things off. back to you. >> thank you, mike. surgeons at st. mary's medical center calling a difficult toe

to thumb transplant a success. it took hours. the patient is from pearl, mississippi. a blade severed his thumb last year. doctors told him they could make it look better but couldn't restore function. a prognosis his wife refused to accept. >> he works, that's what we do. we have a family that we take care of and that's what we have to do, and if we were going to rely on everybody else they would have settled for being disabled and that was not an option. >> doctors say the surgery was successful but the next 48 hours are crucial. they need to make sure there is blood flow in the thumb and no infection. it will be months before it's clear how much function his new thumb will have. remarkable the medicine they can do. >> so they took his toe and put it up to his thumb. wow. good luck with that.

>> good morning, jon. the futures are a touch higher after stocks posted modest losses yesterday. investors were surprised when ben bernanke didn't give a hint in his thaeft the fed is thinking about more steps to boost the economy. he is back on capitol hill today talking to senate panel. asian markets fell but european markets are higher and we're going to get data on unemployment, personal income and spending, manufacturing and construction spending so look for those. the dow fell 53 on wednesday to close at 12,952, but the dow had a good february rising for the fifth straight month. the nasdaq which briefly touched 3,000 for the first time in more than a decade fell to 2966. automakers report february sales today with another strong month expected. sales forecast to rise 3% and analysts say consumers were buying smaller more fuel efficient vehicles. ford says at least a quarter of sales last month were smaller

cars. retailers reporting february sale, forecast to rise about 4.8%. thanks to valentine's and presidents day sales. warmer weather may have motivated shoppers. the momentum could extend into march as easter falls two weeks earlier than last year. >> jackie, thank you. >> midwesterners are cleaning up after a wave of deadly tornados tore through five states. 12 people have died in the violent weather. harrisburg, illinois may have been hit the hardest. six people were killed when a tornado roared through. three were killed as a storm moved into tennessee. >> snow is a story in the sierra, heavy snowfall caused slick conditions for drivers. wind gusts of almost 30 miles per hour in places making the drive treacherous. had to stop and pull over, put on chains. no serious accidents have been reported. >> a lot of snow out there. it's 4:48. we had a very mild january and

february. christina loren is here to tell us what we look like starting march. >> march coming in like a lion, as a matter of fact. it looks like we're going to see more snow and rain for first part of today. we're not out of the woods. you can see we've got a weak disturbance pushing into northern california. you can see it falling apart north of ft. bragg and over chico we're losing a lot of the moderate rain that turns to light rain. throughout the day that front will slide to the south and we're going to see this die out. but we'll see showers make their way into the bay area. we have a little shower activity right now pushing through the north bay. we're dry for the current time. your future cast tells a story, through probably 7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m. we'll see spotty showers over the greater bay area. throughout the day at 10:00 a.m. starting to get clearing up to the north bay, a lot of action through the south bay. we stop the clock at 1:00, a dry bay area. we have a fair amount of cloud cover and temperatures cool so you need your jacket. but you can ditch that umbrella

by about noon. 4:00 p.m., a mix of sun and clouds and tomorrow morning we should have a lot of sunshine and a clear shot of those mountaintops covered in the white stuff. 53 by friday. look at the climb for sunday, up to 73 degrees inland. we'll stay dry for monday. then more rain on tuesday. back to you guys. >> thank you very much. fans all over the world paying tribute to davy jones, the front man for the 1960s band the monkeys. jones died of a heart attack yesterday in florida. the 66-year-old sky-rocketed to fame in 1965 when he joined the monkeys who were originally put together just as a made-for-tv band. the music outselling the beatles and the rolling stones at one point. that's how popular these guys were. jones sang some of the most memorable songs like daydream believer and i want to be free. >> the introof the film. >> memories.

lincecum is set to pitch in the exhibition opener on saturday, and you can also pencil him in for opening day as well. also good news on the injury front as freddy sanchez took ground balls and threw to first base on wednesday. the team is scheduled to have a day off friday and sanchez expects to join his team for drills on saturday. >> can taste it already. >> feels good. 4:55. time to check the roads with mike inouye. >> you know, we had a lot of wind and rain overnight especially in the north bay. we had gusty conditions at times. that may have contributed to the wires being down across route highway 128 at cloverdale. they have a closure of the road and local reroutes. that will not affect 101, it will affect you getting there. we'll track that. but really, that's really north up in geyserville.
