drive yesterday. the previous day as well. this morning we might see fog develop. but at this time the wind is still strong that it is not happening. you can see from this camera, high atop san bruno looking over san francisco, a little shake to it. still a little breezy. the winds will relax and temperatures will soar. i've got the forecast coming up. even warmer for the weekend. 6:01. we want to get you to work on time on a friday. >> on time is the key here. you showed all of the twinkling lights of san francisco. let me show you hayward. not so much twinkling going on. these lights by pg&e, still repairing a power pole and downed wire. they have wires back up but it may be until 3:30 they get this restored. a car went into a pole here and has taken out customers. you see where it is. hayward near the castro valley and this may affect the alarm clocks in the area. if you have friends, give them a shout on the cell phone. they may be without an alarm

clock. >> thanks so much. it's 6:01. another bay area company the subject of ipo. yelp is going public. there is a twist to this stock offering. >> reporter: the twist would be that people weren't expecting its ipo to be as high as it's going to be when the markets open later. they expect to the be in the $12-14 range. ipo price offering will be $15. slightly higher. this is for a company that has not turned a profit since its founding in 2004. but a lot of anticipation at the headquarters behind me in san francisco, if you are not familiar with this site this lets users post reviews of restaurants and other local businesses, priced at $15 a share when it starts trading on the new york stock exchange that would raise the company $120 million before expenses. giving it a valuation of $900 million. that's too high according to one analyst with morning star.

he thinks it's too high because the company has not turned a profit. last year it lost almost $17 million. yelp relies on revenue from advertising. it did show growth last year bringing in $84 million. that was an increase of 75% from the year before. another analyst expects yelp stock to do well in the short-term because people buy, people will be users who believe in the website but aren't necessarily aware of or have an understanding of the financial. that is of concern. while the stock could do well in the short-term, what is it going to do in the long term, that's the question mark. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we're going to get more about the word on yellp in a live report. >> we're learning more about the moments leading up to the murder of a hell's angel allegedly by a fellow biker. steve ruiz is charged with

killing steve townsend last october for another member. in court filings police claim ruiz was severely beaten by two men including townsend before the shooting. video from the cemetery shoes ruiz being punched, kicked, knocked to the ground. he was arrested last weekend at a fremont hotel after months on the run. >> a berkeley student gravely injured after falling from the second floor of a frat house remains 18 medically induced coma. andrew crowley suffered severe head trauma. he was climbing a drain spout when he fell. police suspect he was drunk. >> 6:04. police in marin county are asking for help to catch a suspect in a series of armed robberies. look at the sketch. detectives releasing the sketch of the man suspected. last month, both happened in broad daylight. one was caught on surveillance

video. you can see the suspect walk up to the cashier on february 14, he pulled out a gun, demands money and then takes off on foot. police believe the same man hit a union 76 station on february 28. >> 6:05. jack in the box in san francisco's inner richmond district can keep its hours. neighbors say it attracts crime. the board of appeals decided to hold off. the board wants the commission to watch the operations for the next six months to make sure it who meets the conditions of the permit. the hours came under scrutiny when a cal firefighter was run down after an argument that started at the jack in the box. >> san francisco's wroonion square will transform into a disaster training ground. >> so called emergency day at 11:00 this morning. american red cross volunteers and pg&e officials will help

create a disaster game plan. locals will train along side bay area celebrities and public officials. today's events include activities to teach disaster preparedness skills. >> a memorial that honors more than a sentry of war veterans is ready to be rededicated. it's been boarded up after being damaged by vandals. damian trujillo is live in san jose where yesterday volunteers put some of the finishing touches on the restoration being done. >> reporter: good morning. this looks like now here in downtown san jose, this is all thanks to volunteers and donors who saw what the vandals did to the san jose war memorial. now you are getting a look at the finishing touches exclusively on nbc bay area. for months the old memorial as you mentioned remained boarded up. vandals shattered three of the gas panels. and because they are so expensive it took a while for donors and volunteers to pick up the pieces because each panel is

worth roughly $18,000. so they raised some money and ordered cheaper yet more durable glass panels. these are worth roughly $2,000 each. the contractor put the finishing touches on the memorial yesterday. volunteers are preparing for the unveiling in the next few days, a rededication if you will. one vet ran told me it he saw a lot of things in the jungles of vietnam. we were supposed to hear live this morning from andrew, a volunteer responsible for this restoration effort but he called a few minutes ago saying he won't be able to make it. thanks to his work and the work of many other volunteers and donors, the san jose war memorial is back in business. we're live in downtown san jose. i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> the fight over whether a group of high school students had the right to wear american

flag t-shirts to school could end up in federal appeals court. the attorney for three morgan hill high school students filed an appeal this week. he's asking the court to reverse a november ruling finding the boys' first amendment rights were not violated when they were ordered to remove their flag shirts on cinco de mayo in 2010. the the principal says he was worried the shirts would provoke violence. >> i want to check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. a wet soggy week. the sun is going to emerge. >> you know, you morning commuters have had it rough for the past two days but the good news is this morning we don't have major weather elements to slow you down. you might find areas of ponding left over, especially through construction zones. the winds are light, we don't have deep fog to report and your temperatures are cold. but really, we're not seeing reports of ice or frost. we could see some in places like concord and san mateo but we are falling into the mid-30s and the

>> welcome back. 6:13. a sad story out of the sierra. an avalanche killed a skier near a popular ski resort in lake tahoe. brian hickey is live with a look at what happened. brian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a popular area known as ward canyon south of alpine meadows ski resort, it is the back country. you can access it independent of the resort. that's where rescuers believe these three had gone into ward canyon. this is video from the rescue as we're told three men were caught in an avalanche up there. one of the victims was swept 300 feet down the mountain where he was then smashed into a tree as they describe it, wrapped around

a tree where he suffered significant trauma, they said multiple broken limbs and trauma. they were able to get him out of there but not after hours of having to ski up in there and drag him out on a sled and get him in a snow cat which they put him in an ambulance and took him to the hospital where we learned he succumbed. this is how one rescuer describes the scene. i apologize we do not have that sound. he described the area as about a 300-foot slide, the slide continued another 500 feet below where the man was pinned against the tree. the sierra avalanche center had rated the avalanche conditions as high. they downgraded that to considerable but say anybody going into the back country needs to be prepared bringing basic equipment, a back pack with extra layers of clothing, this is my personal beacon, not only in the back country but the resort on a powdery day it sends

out a signal should you become buried. these ski poles, they come apart and attach together to become a probe for probing if your buddy becomes buried. you have to have a shovel to dig. >> we lost our report from brian. but good advice on his end. >> very much so. and i believe that avalanche danger continues as well up in the sierra. >> for the next 48 hours, in fact. you know what, i would say to be safe, i know you want to hit that fresh powder, you want to hit the back country. it's just safe tear avoid that for the next 48 hour we have that considerable danger. it's always safe tear take somebody with you. you want to always take a bud we you if you'll be out in the sierra nevada, i would say just to be safe, moms, make sure your little ones stay on the main lines, the main arteries in the sierra nevada. after that conditions will greatly improve. we have a major warm-up on the way. 41 in novato.

47 in san francisco and 36 degrees in concord. 40 in san jose. so cold enough for a jacket. but you don't need to take the umbrella. we're done with the rain. we have another warning for those of you who want to hit the beach today. 60 degrees at noon. ideal conditions for the beaches. from san luis obispo through los angeles the high surf advisory in place as that system moves south. you might find a slight risk of rip currents. you want to keep that in mind. another good opportunity for to you take a buddy, go to a guarded beach. stay safe. high pressure is the reason for the warm-up. it pushes the jet stream out of the area, taking the storm track well into canada. so for us it's going to be warm. that ridge just gets stronger into the weekend. that means warmer conditions so today's highs, in the mid to upper 60s in some cities, tomorrow's highs are going to be in the 70s even by the bay. we're warming you up quickly.

64 in san francisco, 65 in richmond, because of the warm-up, you can bet that snow is going to melt quickly up in tahoe so. you're going to get the best skiing conditions today and tomorrow. but as we keep pointing out you want to stay on the main lines to play it safe. sun and clouds saturday into sunday. up to 76 degrees. it's going to be beautiful here. sunday a lot of people on the local streets. 69 by monday. a round of rain on tuesday, it's not packing a lot of moisture, the system that's approaching the coast right now. but, it will bring cold air in and maybe a quarter inch. >> we'll take to you the south bay. guys with the weather changes christina is talking about much drier road, better conditions. we do, however, have the disabled vehicle to tell you about. this is northbound 87 at taylor right around the taylor street bridge. i pointed out here because we talked about cirque du soleil in town, off the bridge you'll see below the freeway this big yellow and blue tent. that's what you see.

opening bell this morning. the san francisco company celebrating its stock hitting the market today. another ipo. we turn to jackie with more. good morning. >> good morning to you. ahead of the opening bell stock futures are slightly lower t asian markets were higher overnight, european markets mixed. another well known internet company is making iths debut on wall street. yelp at $15 a share, that was above the expected range. the offering value at 900 million. yelp isn't profitable and warns it may never be. it generates much from online ads. likely to be the last big web ipo until we get facebook. back over to you. >> interesting to see where it goes. 6:19. >> a short cut could derail the first ban on plastic bags. the bag industry is suing san francisco saying it failed to do an environmental review on the

impact of the ban before passing it. that's a violation of the state's environmental quality act. the suit challenges the right to regulate restaurants. if the case is heard and the ban overturned it could have wider impact state wide. recycling plastic bottles and aluminum cans is about to get you more money. the state is raising the rates for the two materials by 7 cents per pound for plastic, aluminum will go up 3 cents per pound. regulators made the change after deciding consumers were not getting enough of the money through the redemption value. >> it's 6:20. coming up macy's is bringing more jobs to san francisco. but it's not opening another store. we'll have details next. oh will you grab us some yoplait?

held with mirkarimi's ex-girlfriend to decide if she can testify for the prosecution. flores filed a police report claiming mirkarimi abused her when they dated four years ago. no charges will be filed in that case because of the statute of limitations. mirkarimi is charged with bruising his wife's arm during a new year's eve argument. pictures of the bruises have been ruled admitable. >> a lube is facing fines after a deadly accident. a scientist was killed in september when a cylinder exploded at membrane technology and research. cal osha found pressure in the cylinder was trifp the level. >> this morning experts are warning of high avalanche danger

in the sierra after a skier was killed in lake tahoe. the skier and two friends triggered a slide in an out-of-bounds area near the alpine meadows ski resort. deputies say the men were pushed several hundred feet down the mountain. >> one was caught in the slide, right from the git-go and taken down the mountain quite a ways, probably 300 feet down. he was all messed up. he was pretty wrapped around a tree. quite a few broken limbs. >> the injured skier was taken to the hospital in truckee where he died. the other two men were not hurt. so far none of the skiers has been identified. >> this morning a memorial dedicated to war veterans is ready to be rededicated after a bay area community spent $30,000 to repair damage left by vandals. damian trujillo is live in san jose with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura.

the san jose war memorial had been boarded up but yesterday the volunteers and the contractor put the finishing touches on the restoration of the san jose war memorial. vandals shattered three of these glass panels, each worth about $18,000. we brought a vietnam veteran out here and he told us it was one of the most disgusting things he witnessed and he saw a lot. volunteers got together and able to restore the memorial. the expensive glass panels were replaced with cheaper more durable glass. now each costs about $2,000 instead of 18. so the memorials of our men and women will again be in full display in the center of downtown san jose. in a couple weeks there will abrededication of the new

memorial but you're getting the first look here on nbc bay area. we don't know if they were anti-war protesters or regular vandals but police have not made arrests. in any case t rededication of this war memorial will begin in a couple of days. i'm damian trujillo, "today in the bay." >> a san francisco woman considered a local hero is getting national recognition. she is a finalist for the citizen before self honors handed out by the congressional medal of honor foundation. october 19 she witnessed a cement truck crash. she pulled the driver to safety and called for help. first say without her the man would have likely died. they hand out the award to bring awareness to the medal of honor. winners will be announced later this month. >> 6:36. another great thing, the

>> welcome back. about 6:42. gas prices on the minds of commuters in the bay area, now they have become a focus in the presidential campaign. tracie potts joins us live from washington with more on how president obama and his opponents are addressing this issue. tracy, good morning. >> good morning. republican candidates think they can get gas back down to $2 a gallon, that's what they say on the campaign trail. president obama is defending his energy policy saying it's what's happening overseas that is most affecting the gas prices. but he does have a couple of points. he says cleaner more fuel efficient cars on the way will drive down demand and save on average $8,000 per family. he is also urging congress to do something about the 4 billion in oil subsidies the taxpayers give the oil companies every year.

the honor rang the opening bell. we'll see how they do. >> reporter: the ceo rang the bell. the initial offering at $15. right now i'm checking it's up about 62%, in the $24 range which should give yelp the online review site for restaurants and businesses, would give that a valuation of over $1 billion. is that sustainable? that's a big question mark. we know one analyst with morning star is not big on yelp sustaining this type of momentum. they think a valuation is too high. here's why. the company has not turned a profit since its founding in 2004. last year it lost almost $17 million. yelp relies on advertising for its revenue. it did the show growth, brought in around $84 million. that was up 75% from the year before. right now yelp is trading again

be open for viewing in a couple of weeks. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it was an ugly sight to see this war memorial boarded up. volunteers came in, they pitched in and here it is, they put the finishing toughs on the new glass panels yesterday so this is brand new. we brought a vietnam veteran to this memorial last year. police do not -- have not found vandals who shattered these glass panels. he saw a lot of terrible things in the war zone but this was one of the most troubling things he has ever witnessed. these panels were not cheap, each cost about $18,000 but volunteers say they used better technology in the new panels, it's cheaper glass but more durable and those cost about $2,000 per panel. i spoke to the same veteran about two minutes ago. he is 0 going to join us to see for himself what the new panels look like and give us his opinion. we'll have his answer this

ruled the voter approved ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional but prop 8 supporters appealed asking the court to rehear the case with 11 judges. that will only delay the outcome which is expected to go to the supreme court. >> the original authors of the state death penalty law are pushing to abolish it. they say they have collected enough signatures to get a proposition on the november ballot. if passed it would replace california's death sentence with life in prison and would immediate hi apply to the 700 people now on death row. backers of the proposition say the death penalty is ineffective and far too expensive. abolishing it would save the state almost 200 million a year. >> 6:54. classes are back in session at chardon high school since monday's shooting that killed three students in the small ohio community. prosecutors charged t.j. lane yesterday and say they want to
