it by lunch. >> 10:00. >> that early? >>y he. temperatures, we have 30s and 40s outside, oakland kind of chilly this morning. 38 degrees. 40 san jose, low 30s in fairfield and gilroy. you can see the wind generally offshore. we're seeing that now starting to develop in napa and fairfield. breezy in the hill tops. notice the radar is dry, high pressure clearing out our skies today and tomorrow. this warmup that we'll experience is really a two-day warmup. it's arriving just in time for the weekend. mid to upper 60s. as we head towards 1:00 and cooling off a bit towards 5:00 today. still near 70 in san jose by 5:00 today. it's tomorrow where we'll have a good chance of hitting mid-70s in the forecast. a full look at that coming up in just a few minutes. from a beautiful forecast to a weather nightmare in the midwest. the overnight death toll is rising this morning after the violent storm system that killed at least 31 people in three states. in kentucky, some communities have no power, making search and

rescue even more difficult. this is video from the town of west liberty near the west virginia border. tornadoes heavily damaged the downtown area there. we are following this story for you. we will have the latest on damage from indiana and tennessee and kentucky coming up in just about 15 minutes. $34 million worth of meth is off the streets after one of the biggest drug busts in u.s. history. it went down at the san jose woods apartment complex at the corner of snell and capital expressway. the bust started with a door knock by palo alto police detectives who were serving a search warrant in their investigation into stolen ipads. while doing that search, the detectives stumbled upon 750 pounds of meth. they called the dea, san jose police and the district attorney's office of santa clara county. what they found wasn't just a load of drugs, it was also a conversion lab where methamphetamine was being turned into its chris cal form. >> it's believed to be one of

the largest methamphetamine seizures in u.s. history. boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes filled with bags and bags and bags of methamphetamine. >> three people are not under arrest on drug charges. until now, the biggest bust was a 600-pound seizure in gilroy just a few years back. in san jose, three more children are claiming they were molested by their teacher at the same time other students say they still can't believe the allegations are true. craig chandler remains behind bars without bail. three elementary school girls told police that chandler molested them, prompting the d.a. to file new charges against him. chandler now faces five felony counts of lewd acts against children. we talked to one woman who is surprised. >> he never seemed to be that type of person to be doing that. >> all of the alleged victims

are children at the o.b. whaley elementary school. to the east bay where a month-long robbery spree comes to a screeching halt. chp officers arrested 27-year-old ana blander of mill valley, 18-year-old maurice jenkins of menlo park and a 17-year-old juvenile. they robbed people along with convenience stores, liquor stores in february, officials say. then the industry came to an end on tuesday when detectives noticed this stolen car linked to the suspects. the chp pursued them from san pablo to newark where they were finally taken intoç custody. a southern california doctor is charged with murder in the death of a san ramon college student. 20-year-old joey rovero was halfway through his senior year at arizona state university in 2009 when he overdozed on xanax and oxycontin which he mixed with alcohol during a birthday

party. the drugs found in rovero's system were prescribed to him by dr. lisa tseng. she appeared in a los angeles courtroom yesterday but did not enter a plea to charges of second degree murder. in the deaths of rovero and also two other young men from southern california. rovero's parents want to prevent tragedies like their own from befalling other families. >> we want there to be a message that through her arrest and prosecution that we'll see unfold, the doctors can't do this. we trust doctors with our very lives. >> the purpose of joey's life and tragic event of his death, we tell the story, we tell it right, maybe it will save some lives. >> dr. tseng's arraignment was postponed until march 9th. she's being held on $3 million bail. three occupy oakland protesters are accused of committing a hate crime and robbery. the alameda county district attorney charged the three protesters with felony crimes saying that michael davis, nneka

crawford and randolph wilkins surrounded a woman on february 22nd when she asked them not to riot in their neighborhood. the suspects yelled vulgarities at the victim. but it didn't stop there. police say they also took her wallet. the victim managed to break free and call police. officers say the suspect's targeted the victim because of her perceived sexual orientation. in castro valley, a tragic turn for an elderly man. heyward firefighters responded to the scene yesterday on old dublin road near east caster valley boulevard south of 580. that's where an elderly man out for his morning paper somehow missed his driveway and turned, driving his silver lexus into a creek bed. after more than four hours, someone drove by and noticed the wreck. the crews transferred the man to eden hospital. it was too late to save him. his identity has not been released.

sleep train yanked its ads from the rush limbaugh show. georgetown university law student sandra fluke testified before congress in support of president obama's policy to provide birth control for all women, then she became a target for the radio conservative talk show host. rush limbaugh compared fluke's views that birth control should be provided free of charge to prostitution. president obama thanked her personally. >> what did he say to you? >> he encouraged me and supported me and thanked me for speaking out about the concerns of american women and what was really personal for me was that he said to tell my parents that they should be proud and that meant a lot, because rush limbaugh questioned whether or not my family would be proud of me. i just appreciated that very much. >> house speaker john boehner, a republican, called limbaugh's words inappropriate according to his spokesman. limbaugh is not apologizing for the comments. to presidential politics now

in the caucus day in washington state. republican voters there are going to pick their candidate. it is the last stop for gop presidential hopefuls in the road to super tuesday. at stake in washington are 40 delegates to the republican national nominating convention this summer. the state is second only to florida's 50 delegates in contests so far. all four contenders visited washington before today's caucuses. mitt romney, rick santorum and newt gingrich are now campaigning in ohio, the critical primary state for next week. tomorrow the bay area will get an unprecedented visit from israeli president shimon peres. his visit will focus on innovation, he plans to visit facebook and google to talk with tech leaders there. coming up in this news cast, the project that peres is working on with facebook founder mark zuckerberg. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, he thought he was a successful hunt but a state

accepted a $6,800 gift. he allegedly didn't pay the full fee charged to guests on the ranch in idaho. the complaint will be considered. gavin newsome is among lawmakers calling for richards resignation. a dispute over a car covered by an american flag is causing a stir in napa. the car's owner says he found the giant flag in the trash a few months ago and thought he would be putting it to good use but some of his neighbors disagreed and complained to the city. the car's owner has since removed the frag from his car. the avalanche that claimed the life of a skier in lake tahoe thursday took him more than 1,000 feet down the mountain and wrapped him around a clump of trees. friends dug in the snow for three minutes before freeing him but in the end he did not survive. there is video of the spot where he backslid down on to bracket.

the avalanche center says the avalanche ranked considerable on the danger scale. he was with two others skiing out of bounds near alpine meadows where authorities say he triggered that avalanche. he was taken to a truckee hospital where he later died. a water fountain in the middle of the crookedest street in the world. the tourists on lombard street got the memory of a lifetime. the car hit a fire high dran. you can see what happened after that. water into the air and garages and nearby homes as well. >> it's a really cool street, even cooler when it's covered in water. and there's firefighters everywhere. it's an exciting tourist attraction for the day. >> no word on the condition of that driver. firefighters were able to stop the flow of water about a half hour later. but boy, the pictures that those tourists get to take home. much more ahead on "today in the bay." still to come, we are following

this is "today in the bay." we are looking live at some of the wildlife in san francisco. little pigeons perching on the railing there, looking out, enjoying a beautiful view that we pay so much money for. and rob mayeda has a look at the forecast that looks just as lovely that as picture. you're saying it's going to get warmer before lunch time? >> yes. the pigeons were sunning themselves. it's cold outside this morning. 30s and 40s outside, even san francisco kind of chilly this

morning. 47 degrees on the east side of the bay. 38 in oakland, san jose, close to 40. 34 in gilroy and look at fairfield, napa and santa rosa, mid-30s now but by the afternoon, some spots in the north bay hills may make a run later on today. we're starting to see a northeast breeze, offshore winds picking up. it will be breezy, down at sea level not too bad today. by the afternoon, t-shirts can break out around 1:00, 60s and 7:today, fantastic for the weekend. then come tuesday you'll see the next chance of seeing showers. keeping an eye on the weather throughout across the southeast today, southern georgia into the panhandle of florida. this is where wind shear will be the strongest. maybe a few rotating storms here. t as you look back out towards the midwest, lake-effect snow there heading into chicago and around the rockies west, pretty calm. high pressure builds back across

california. actually impacts most of the west coast. the storm track is moving off to the north and underneath this ridge of high pressure we're seeing sinking warming air aloft, which is drying things out. it should warm us up today, at least mostly 60s today. some of the warmest spots, especially south of san jose out to the trivalley should see sun today. i do think the numbers will warm up even more come tomorrow. today looks pretty nice. we're almost going to warm 30 to 40 degrees by the afternoon. 60s to low 70s around san jose. santa cruz looking nice at the offshore breezes in the 70s. trivalle trivalley, pleasanton. near 70 in oakland, santa rosa 73 degrees. low 70s up around the north bay valleys and warmer for tomorrow. the warmest weather we've seen all week long arriving just in time for the weekend plans. notice monday we'll start to cool down. then we'll see a chance of showers dropping in.

the main affect tuesday will be more clouds and a big drop in temperatures. it will be chilly as we head towards the middle part of the week. we'll call for warming late in the week but for now, we'll hold the showers off for the second half of the week. warmer heading towards next weekend. unfortunately around the rest of the country they're getting an early spring preview of the spring weatherç and turnout break. >> i saw a month's worth of tornadoes just in one day. >> 98 tornadoes. if that is confirmed that will be a record total for march for a single day. >> it's no surprise that daylight is giving crews a better picture of the damage left by a powerful midwest storm. the death toll rose to 31 people in three states overnight. kentucky, indiana, ohio and in alabama, a severe weather was rolling in, a sheriff's deputy captured this on his cam. a few other vehicles were on the road at the time.

a twister did not get very close, fortunately. meanwhi meanwhile, they are picking up the pieces of what mother nature destroyed. we have the latest on those powerful storms. >> reporter: it's hard. it's hard on everybody. everything's gone, you know, everything's just gone. >> the forecast for southern indiana called for severe weather. but what followed early friday evening could not have been predicted. >> didn't really think it was going to happen because tornado warnings come out all the time. >> reporter: tornadoes ripped through a four-county radius, leveling small farming communities. there were as many tornados in the last 24 hours than in the average month of march. the people here are shocked at how quickly the devastation happened. >> things were falling, things were coming off the walls, noise, crashes, glass flying everywhere. it was like a dream. >> mother nature unleashed her fury on us. we'll get through this. >> here in henryville, a town of

very different from seeing it. an east bay man who weighs nearly 700 pounds is getting the help, love and tension that he asked for. here's "today in the bay." >> hi, my name is robert. i'm 23 years old. >> reporter: you're looking at a young man's desperate plea for help. robert gibbs of livermore is so obese, he can barely function. yesterday on the eve of his 23rd birthday he posted an emotional call for help on youtube. >> i just figured that before my birthday i could get the video to go viral and someone to help me. i don't know what else to do. >> reporter: gibbs sat down with nbc bay area to share the pain of his life-long battle with food addiction. >> life for me -- it feels like

i'm trapped within myself. >> reporter: gibbs says he's been struggling with obesity since he was 4 years old. >> i was constantly teased. even asking for help, my videos, people don't understand. it's not that hard to exercise. >> he has the biggest hard of anybody i know. >> reporter: gibbs single mother says the family never had the resources to deal with her son's illness properly. >> i didn't really have time to think of the future. >> i'm scared that i'm just going to go to sleep and that's it. without even knowing if i get to say good-bye to anybody. >> reporter: but gibbs has so much to live for, including a

>> chilly. 30s and 40s. we're at 47 near the water, 38 in oakland right now. 40 in san jose. not much wind out there, though. you notice the wind direction slightly offshore and around our hilltop today we will see breezy conditions as high pressure starts to build in, somewhat of a north to northeast wind flow across the bay area. it's cleared out skies. it should mean we'll go from the winterlike chilly temperatures to 50s and upper 60s by lunch time. 4:00, 5:00, 60s across the board after a few low 70s in parts of the bay area today. we'll talk more about that and our next chance of seeing showers in our seven-day forecast. >> we'll layer up. silicon valley is known for all things tech. last night, the capital of silicon valley became the spot for one of the biggest methamphetamine busts ever. happened at the woods apartment, the large complex located at the corner of snell and capital

expressway in san jose. dea agents, along with the district attorney's office and police seized 750 pounds of meth in this apartment unit. the garage was tagged with signs notifying the neighbors about that seizure. palo alto detectives were there searching for stolen ipads and that such led them to the woods apartment. as they were executing a search warrant they found what appeared to be a huge amount of meth inside this unit. they called the dea, the san jose police, the d.a.'s office. together they uncovered what looked like a meth conversion lab where the meth was being converted into the chris cal form. the street value for this amount of meth, $34 million. >> it's believed to be one of the biggest methamphetamine seizures in u.s. history, basically boxes and boxes and boxes and boxes filled with bags and bags and bags of methamphetamine. >> three people were arrested on drug violation charges.

the list is growing, three more children have come forward accusing san jose teacher of sexual abuse. former students say they can't believe the allegations are true, though. three elementary school girls told police that this man, craig chandzler molested them, proprietoring the district attorney as office to file new charges against him. chandler now faces five counts of lewd acts against children. all of the alleged victims are students at o.b. whaley elementary school in the evergreen school district. all of them under the age of 10. chandler is now on paid administrative leave. he remains behind bars, no bail. they call her dr. feelgood but this morning, a southern california physician is charged with murder in connection with three deadly drug overdoses. one of the victims, a young man from san ramon. this morning his family is speaking out. when he overdozed on xanax and oxycontin which he mixed with alcohol during a birthday and graduation party with friends. it's a day that follows his mother wherever she goes. >> i can remember acutely the moment we heard about his death. you know, the reaction i had when i learned that a doctor had been involved. before this happenedç i never heard the term dirty doctor. >> reporter: the drugs found in rovero's system were prescribed by this doctor, lisa tseng. she appeared in a los angeles courtroom but didn't enter a plea to charges of second degree murder in the deaths of joey rovero and two other young men from southern california. prosecutors say doctor tseng wrote rovero prescriptions for xanax and oxycontin after one short $75 visit at her southern california office. during which rovero complained of back pain. prosecutors accused of tseng of writing 27,000 similar prescriptions since 2007. and in addition to the murder charges, she now faces 20 felony

spend 45 years to life in prison. one of the three men who kidnapped a bus load of school children could be released from prison soon. the first district court of appeals in san francisco ruled richard showen feld has served his sentence sean should be released on parole as soon as possible. unless that is the state files an appeal. schoenfeld and his brother demanded a $5 million ransom for the return. the hostages escaped unharmed. it is now a waiting game. bp agreed late last night to settle out of court with more than 100,000 people who claimed harm from the massive 2010 oil spill. now plaintiffs are deciding whether to take part in a settlement or opt out and sue instead. bp says it expects to pay out nearly $8 billion. the lawsuits were brought by fishermen who lost work as well as cleanup workers who got sick.

think it's warm, not the case, at least for the next couple of hours. 30s and 40s outside. low to mid-30s fairfield to napa. 43 now in san jose. temperatures starting to climb as the sun has come up. notice the wind direction slightly offshore. i do think we'll see some breezy conditions as these offshore winds pick up for the afternoon, though, mainly in the hilltops. a cold start to the morning but a pleasant afternoon on the way. mostly sunny. 60s and 70s for most of the bay area, maybe even a little bit warmer before the chance of showers arrive on tuesday. tornado watches and warnings likely will be in south georgia into the florida panhandle at least for the next couple of hours as severe weather slowly heads across the gulf coast and out around the southeast. lake-effect snow going with the northwesterly winds around chicago. west of the rockies, things dry out because high pressure is starting to clear out our skies, not just here in the bay area in northern california but much of the west coast.

storm tracks way off to the north. underneath that ridge of high pressure, warming temperatures, 60s and 70s, mainly south of san jose and out towards pleasanton for the afternoon. temperatures climb up a little more for your sunday. the sea breeze comes back and we'll slowly cool off those temperature as we head into early next week. today we should see low 70s this afternoon, upper 60s as you get closer around the bay, alameda and richmond we'll see those temperatures, mid-70s around pleasanton. 67 around san francisco, north winds picking up around santa rosa and sonoma. tomorrow, we think it will be the warmest day of the next seven days. we've had three to five feet of snow in the see ierrsierras.

underneath the bay bridge. the crane is in the distance. a very mild start to the day in san francisco. not exactly what the tourists saw along the crookedest street in the world where there was a water fountain, right in the middle of lombard street. that's a nice fountain. the locals know better. it was a memory of a lifetime. the car hit a fire hydrant and then, of course, you see what happened. water got into the garages of nearby homes and into the air as well. >> it's even cooler when it's covered in water. and there's firefighters everywhere. it's pretty exciting tourist attraction for the day. >> the tourist was from washington, d.c. the folks who live along the street, maybe not so much. water did get into some of the garages though no major damage. the driver said he didn't really want to talk about it. firefighters were able to stop the flow in about a half hour. is he the next steve jobs?

meet 24-year-old kieran scott woodhouse. he says he created a smartphone made of bamboo. it's just a prototype, finished product will be called at zero. the smartphone is made in china from locally sourced bamboo which says makes the phone more durable and weigh half as much as other phones. it could be launched in the uk by the end of the year. really it's just the casing. >> you could actually maybe drop that phone and it would still work. >> yes. well, we want to show you the forecast again. you'll want to get out and enjoy it. >> a lot of people will be taking pictures with their smartphones today.ç 60s and 70s today, tomorrow will be the warmest day of the weekend. more 70s for inland valley tomorrow. maybe one more day will squeeze in around 70 on monday. the sea breeze picks up and showers come back on tuesday.
