good morning. i'm kris sanchez. coming up on "today in the bay," dozens of people are waking up in shelters after overnight fires in san francisco. the latest on that. plus, israeli president shimon peres starts an historic bay area visit today. we'll show you the heavyweight visit on his must-visit list. plus, people in the south and midwest are dealing with the devastation from this weekend's violent storms and tornadoes. and hollywood's best did something they have never done before to show their support for gay marriage. we'll show you. this is "today in the bay." >> good morning to you.

a cool start to the day, but look at the flag in the disstance. rob says it doesn't usually wave that way. thanks for joining us on this sunday morning. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda. offshore breezes mean? >> winds offshore, temperatures soar, mostly 70s. santa rosa and napa upper 30s. santa rows az 39 and 43 in san jose. not too much wind, but, still, that wind direction all important northeast at 6 through fairfield and obviously nothing here on the radar. nothing here on the radar all across the state. go all the way up to puget sound to see a few showers north of seattle. you can see that giant ridge of high pressure and notice the temperatures here by lunchtime. 60s and 70s and should finish the day places like pleasanton, low 70s, upper 60s san francisco and santa cruz. today the last we'll see the 70s for a while. cooling and showers and sierra

snow coming back to the seven-day forecast, so we'll have a full look at that coming up a few minutes from now. >> we need that, but we'll enjoy the sunshine. thanks, rob. 30 people are out of their homes this morning in two san francisco neighborhoods displaced by fires in their apartment buildings. the first fire was in the bayview district at the corner of oakdale avenue and quint streets around 5:30 last night. fire fighters battled that fire for several hours. three buildings are damaged by smoke -- by the fire, smoke and water as well. then crews were called to another fire at the corner of california and hyde street. that was just after 11:30. that one was under control and in about half an hour's time no reports of injuries in either fire. and fire fighters in san jose put out a small fire inside the harbor fish and chips restaurant. a passer by spotted smoke rising a little after 11:30 last night. crews did have it under control within with 30 minutes. no one was inside the building at the time. now to the historic bay area visit of the israeli president.

president shimon peres arrives today, and will tour san francisco and the silicon valley through thursday. the aim of his visit is to address high-tech industry leaders including execs at google and facebook. this is the first time a sitting president of israel has visited the bay area. for years people on both sides of the gay marriage debate have watched every development in the fight over proposition 8, the voter-enacted ban on gay marriage, but last night people watched in a totally new way, a first of its kind internet event on youtube performed by a group of a-list celebrities, including george clooney and brad pitt. "today in the bay" attended a viewing center at the lbgt center in san francisco. >> this is the first to be live streamed on youtube and based on court transcripts of what took place inside the courtroom of judge walker back in 2006: the

star-studded cast boston included brad pitt, george clooney. >> for people who wanted to deprive gays and lesbians of their right. >> reporter: jane lynch. >> majority of americans. >> reporter: and martin sheen. >> i submit that the overwhelming evidence in this case proves -- >> reporter: as scored watched online about, 100 people came to san francisco's lgbt center to relive the crama and emotion of the trial which challenged the statewide ban on same-sex marriage. >> it was very accurate. i mean, the trial transcripts and put them into a play. the testimony that was given was word for word what was said during the trial. >> it's really embothering for me to be able to see that and be able to -- to take all that i sell during the trial and all the decisions that what made and see it come together in one play. >> reporter: the play was written by dustin lanse black who won an oscar for his

ron paul took second, with nearly 25%. rick santorum was a very close third. this is romney's fourth straight victory, and as "today in the bay" brian moore reports, as he heads into ohio he has the support of a major newspaper there. >> we need a president who knows the economy to fix the economy. >> reporter: mitt romney rallied his supporters at a big town hall in dayton, and he picked up the endorsement of ohio's largest newspaper, "the plain dealer" of cleveland. still, the latest polls shows rick santorum seems to have the momentum. >> this is a marathon, not a sprint. going to keep working, doing well, and we feel like this race is narrowing just like it should be. >> reporter: while newt gingrich has to win his home state of georgia, ron paul is more interested in adding to his delegate count, and that's what super tuesday is all about, delegates. 419 up for grabs in ten states. that's more than a third of the

1,144 delegates needed to cinch the nomination. brian moore, nbc news, washington. >> jury selection in the ross mirkarimi domestic violence trial will begin tomorrow. 184 potential jurors are expected to report to court. meantime, the hearing will continue tomorrow on whether to allow mmirkarimi's former girlfriend to try. he's pled not guilty on battery charges stemming from an argument he had with his wife allegedly on new year's eve. mirkarimi's wife also denies the accusations and is not cooperating with prosecutors. the trial is expected to last two weeks. the cleanup continues this morning after more than 100 tornadoes touched down in at least a dozen states. more than 30 are dead since the first twisters appeared last week. the devastate sfrechd from the southern states all the way up to the midwest. despite the carnage, a miracle at one southern indiana home. crews were able to rescue a 2-year-old girl who was found

alone in a field. she is listed in critical condition. unfortunately, she was the only surviving member of her family. an american died in a head-on collision between two trains in southern poe land. the u.s. consulate in krakow is sending officers to the crash site but declined to release details on the victim. in all, 15 people died, and 56 others were hurt. both trains were traveling on the same track in opposite directions late yesterday when they crashed into each other. it's not yet clear why one of the trains was on the wrong track. the train disaster is poland's worst in more than 20 years. and we still have more ahead for you on "today in the bay." coming up, risch limbaugh makes a rare apology. we'll explain. plus, brian wilson talks about throwing strikes, but they are not on the baseball field. his new business venture that will have you throwing strikes of your own in a hip new environment.

and across the bay. 43 san jose and 38 in gilroy. not much wind for most of the bay area, but it's the wind direction that's still important. still offshore this morning. it should stay that way until about 3:00 this afternoon on the coast. you'll start to see the sea breeze pick back up and cool things off a little bit. inland spots towards the east bay, a little bit more. mid-70s out towards the terill valley, 6 as and 70s elsewhere. tomorrow, we'll see the cooling start to take shape as we start five to ten degrees. overnight hours, tuesday wind and much cooler, highs going back into the 50s of the around the southeast. things clearing out now. the severe weather threat really done as the action heads off to the eve. can you see what's happening here as the recovery efforts continue across the midwest. we've got snow as that canadian air conditioning blasts across the great lakes. snow across indiana down towards kentucky and west of the rockies everything still looks dry. we have high pressure keeping us drying. not just here the but towards

los angeles and san diego. 80s by the way, mid-80s around l.a. today. only showers there north of seattle on the west coast as high pressure is really cleared things out, and with this dry sinking warming air aloft and a slight offshore breeze, temperatures soaring into the 80s. rain monday and tuesday and more snow for the sierra but this system will quickly clear out. it may not impact much of your tuesday morning commute, but what you'll notice tuesday is gusty northwesterly winds which will clear out our skies and really drop down the temperatures come tuesday. today low to mid-70s. san jose south down towards gilroy. mid-70s today. santa cruz should hit the 70s, we'll see how that sea breeze picks up around 4:00, 5:00. may cool down very late in the afternoon, but right here in the tri-valley. antioch and livermore, mid-70s on the coast, out towards san francisco. maybe we get close to 70 around lunchtime, and then we'll be

watching winds turning onshore heading into the evening. that will start to cool things off. cool things off come tomorrow. you can see here over the next three days, there's the timing on the showers, monday night into early tuesday, and then look at that drop from the mid-70s today to 50s to near 80 come tuesday, and then high pressure is going to try to build back, maybe not as warm as we'll see today, but 60s to low 72s for the end of the week, and next weekend and eventually steadily and surely we'll see a chance of showers, maybe not to start saturday, but by the time we get into same-sex sunday showers and cooling down. >> do need that. don't want to complain about the nice weather. get all the needed rain and snow during the week. >> easy for you to say. >> thanks, rob. the 40th annual iditarod race is getting under way and the real fun is actually today. 66 teams will head out in 1,000-mile trek to nome, alaska, more on what's billed as the

good morning to you. looking live at alcatraz, we can see all the way across the bay because it is nice and clear. offshore winds mean warmer temperatures. later on "today," look at me, acting like a weather person. >> that's awesome. >> i used up my one line. >> offshore winds, and notice the radar, it's a little lonely this morning. not much out there in terms of any raindrops. as you look up and down the west coast, high pressure is keeping from basically san diego almost to seattle dry today, and we'll see pretty nice temperatures as we head towards lunch time. chilly for the next couple of hours or so. as early as 1:00, starting to break out. warmest places today, probably pleasanton with mid-70s. late in the day we'll see the sea breeze pick up which believe it or not hints at cooler changes. towards the workweek, big-time cooling towards tuesday with a chance of seeing showers.

hardest hit areas of tornado alley, sifting through miles of debris, all that's left from so many communities and lives ripped apart by the storms. >> tragic, terrible. i mean, it's just like one minute here here and then you're gone. >> reporter: disaster spread by at least 100 to be dose that left deep, painful scars across at least a dozen states. >> he was the greatest love of my life. >> reporter: sheryl picket's husband ron wasn't supposed to be home when the storms hit. >> he shouldn't have been here. he came home early from work because he didn't feel good, and wanted to take a nap. >> reporter: he died when a twister ripped apart their home, and now sheryl, who had been planning a celebration for their 40th wedding anniversary. >> we were going to have a hell of a party. >> reporter: now instead she must prepare for a funeral. across tornado alley for many, the only thing left to hold on to is each other, and they understand they are the lucky ones. >> that we're all okay, that's all that matters. >> reporter: as they work through the haunting images of

what's happened here and the painful reality that's left behind. jay gray, nbc news, henriville, indiana. >> several state lawmakers announced this weekend they plan to seek a state audit of san jose's finances and pension obligations. the idea is to get a neutral and independent evaluation of san jose's true pendulum costs. this comes after an nbc bay area investigation found an inaccurate estimate was used in negotiations with unions. at various times the mayor and others said that san jose's retirement obligation in 2015 could balloon up to $650 million. the state committee plans to meet wednesday to decide whether to approve that request for that independent audit. san francisco's transit agency has a multi-million dollar budget shortfall and held a town hall meeting to discuss the ways to close that gap. proposals are -- include increasing parking meter rates and fines as well as charging for meters on sundays. that alone would reportedly

generate nearly $3 million every year. now today's meeting is the first of five. the next is set for thursday evening at san francisco city college. that one starts at 6:00. no insurance, no problem for about 30 people in san francisco. doctors and nurses from kaiser teamed up with operation access to perform minor surgeries and procedures for people who are living without health insurance. the co-founder of operation access says the procedures can be life-changing. >> we do procedures that will actually get people to qualify for jobs because there are some health barriers to people who work that we can actually correct in a single half-hour visit. >> we're told that the non-profit which was founded in 1939 has helped more than 8,000 people with free surgical and specialty care. in the sierras skiers and snowboarder are enjoying an extra four feet of snow but that may not be helping the economy there. this may be one of the busiest

weekends for tahoe ski resorts but has been one of the bleakest snow seasons on record. business has been slow and people are now talking ways to boost business n.south lake tahoe there's talk of expanding entertainment and gambling options and in north lake tahoe they are considering a plan to bring in more tech workers from the bay area to relocate and telecommute. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, apple is expected to make an announcement on wednesday. we e thth ow. of ipads. >> reporter: layoffs have been slowing down lately. jobless claims have steadily dropped and private companies have been hiring more workers. the result, the national unemployment rate has fallen to 8.3%, and this friday we'll hear from the labor department about whether the jobless numbers improved again in february. the markets have been on a roll so far this year, and both the dow and nasdaq start the new week just below big milestones reached last week. the dow at 13,000 and the daze knack about 3000. this tuesday will be no ordinary day. it is super tuesday with ten states having either a republican primary or a caucus to help determine who will be this year's presidential nominee. apple, the most valuable company in the world, may see its shares climb even higher. they are expected to unveil the new more powerful ipad 3. it may show off an alternate version of its current ipad 2 model designed to compete with cheaper tablets from rivals, and a few more notable earnings

>> reporter: with a 6.7 gpa daniela was hoping for an acceptance level from brown university or yale but what she got instead was a deportation order. >> really sad to know that someone who has put so much effort into something and is so good has to face that difficulty. >> reporter: she's, you know, one of the finest students i've ever had and i've been at this school for 23 years. >> born in columbia, daniela came to the u.s. with her family when she was four. she and her sisters multiple requests for residence very been denied and her brother did get legal status for serving in the military. because of her immigration status she hasn't seen her mother for 5 years since she returned to colombia for five years. >> you worked so hard to get here and your dreams are being held back. how do you feel the system is treating you at this point? >> college acceptances come out april 1st so it's been like that goal and now it's being almost shattered. >> reporter: monday a federal

judge gave daniela a month to leave the country voluntarily or be deported. later i.c.e. issued this statement. i.c.e. will not take any action against them while they pursue additional legal options. without legal status, sparing deportation is no permanent fix for students like din yella. >> many of them realize they can't get a job, that they are always looking over their shoulders. >> reporter: nearly 2 million young immigrants are in legal limbo like daniela pitting their hopes on the d.r.e.a.m. act. the d.r.e.a.m. act has failed in congress time and again. >> we're being qualified to go to four-year college, why not let us? >> as for now, daniela is left wondering where she will spend the next four years but possibly the rest of her life. >> all of america, for all of our kids.

>> several girl scouts in houston are a bit shaky run-in with some crooks. nbc's may ee's mary benton has details, including how they tried to fight back. >> reporter: arabia is still shaken up after her and her fellow girl scouts did what they could to fight back against the man who stole their money. >> he took the whole box of money that we, jumped in the car and me and my friend rachel went after the money. >> reporter: it happened just before 2:00 saturday as they were selling girl scout cookies in front of this walmart. that's when a passenger got out pretending he wanted to buy some cookies. instead, he grabbed the cash box and jumped back into the car. the girl and rachel johnson did not let him get away without a fight. >> i was hitting the boy in the passenger seat so i think he learned his lesson a little bit and they dragged my friend rachel across the street driving off real fast. >> i hope your face hurt when

and welcome back. here's a live look from san bruno mountains looking back to san francisco out there this morning, and, it looks like we've got a plane or something flying underneath the live shot on the camera. san francisco is clear. one of the more mild spots we're seeing. 51 degrees right now, but as you head north across the golden gate bridge, still kind of chilly. 70 in santa rosa and nevada. 43 currently in san jose. the wind, not much of a factor, at least for now. later on this afternoon though, i think we're going to see the sea breeze pick back up, which will slowly start to cool things down on the coast. we should easily get to the mid-70s around the tri-valley. 60s to mid-70s for one more day

today and the sea breeze will really start take effect. increasing clouds and, yes, showers by monday night on into very early tuesday morning. high pressure keeping us quite clear, quite dry late in the day. we'll see that ridge start to break down which will allow more clouds to spill in as we go through your monday, and it looks like around midnight into early tuesday morning we'll see showers go on by snow for the sierras because you can see how quickly the system gets out of here. cool dry air will come rushing in which will help power up some gusty and chilly winds come tuesday. today, 70s around the bay area. low to mid-70s from san jose south. mid-70s around pleasanton, low to mid-70s around towards solano county and north bay, numbers close to 70 around san francisco. we should get that around 1:00 and towards this evening the sea breeze will pick up. low 70s across the inland north bay valley so today the warmest day we'll see for the first half the week and things will start

race, there's a lot of people looking at that filing deadline for california to think, well, there's still a lot of delegates at stake if you look at the california primary, and there are a number of states that are late enough that can you make a big impact. i don't think that there's enough delegates at stake to actually get the required number, but you could certainly have a very big impact and force this to a convention showdown, all of which is a long shot, but i think the way this race is shaping up, you know, the primary in california is not necessarily irrelevant at all. >> now, you just had our governor, governor jerry brown, on your -- on "meet the press" this past weekend. when you had governor brown on "meet the press," this past weekend, what do you think he had to say about california, and how does that play on the national stage? >> well, you know, as a native californian, i mean, i understand that so many of the state's problems and challenges

and economic force of the states represent something that's a national motto and governor brown in his third term understands that as well so issues like immigration or the economy or the impact that the president's policies have had on the state certainly look very large and, you know, as i say, somebody from los angeles, you know, this question of whether some of california's problems are ungovernable i think is one that a lot of americans pay attention to, and certainly a lot of californians pay attention to. i think governor brown, we talked a little bit about that last week, somebody who is keenly aware of just how difficult some of these problems are. >> now, clearly folks across the country don't necessarily know the divide between northern california and southern california. you just admitted you're from l.a., and we are here in giants country. you root for the dodgers. we follow your tweet. difficult for you to watch them

win, watch the giants win in. >> it has been difficult because to be a dodger fan is to really strongly dislike the giants, and i do, and i always have, and i'll tell you something. the north/south divide, people need to understand, because i also worked in sacramento with some of your colleagues there, and, you know, in inland california, it's a resource issues, the north/south divide. in the bay area there's a kind of looking down their nose at southern california and i have been the victim of that because i wore my dodger cap to candlestick park and giants fans threw peanuts at me. everybody thinks that everybody in california is so california cool, you know. there's a lot of east coast brawling that goes on, you know, between these -- with these teams. >> listen, we know you take your show on the road sometimes. love to have you up here. won't look down your nose at you, unless you're at a dodgers/giants game. thanks so much, david. >> yeah, my pleasure. >> he was a good spot about that. trying to talk about the primaries, no. we like to talk about baseball.
