had a car overturned. a lot of activity has started to clear. no slowing because the flow is so light. a new accident to tell you about in the next few minutes. >> thousands of college students fed up with the high cost of higher education will rally in front of the state capitol building. >> they want lawmakerses to raise taxes to pay for tuition. more on today's march. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and happy birthday, laura. hundreds of students from ever green college will head to sacramento for an occupy education rally. they are fighting for more funding for higher education and also will be joined by hundreds of students from the bay area. hundreds of students from santa cruz say they plan to head to sacramento. last thursday more than 200 students protested blocking entrances to the university and forcing most classes to be canceled. students at uc-berkeley held a

protest thursday and many of those say they, too, plan to head to the state capitol as well. they are really asking for two things when they go to the capitol today. asking for the state to restore funding to higher education, but also asking for the state to make it more accessible for all students to get a college education. reporting live from evergreen college, marianne favro. >> for the first time the president of israel is visiting the bay area. security is tight this morning at the four seasons hotel where shimon peres arrived. his trip focuses on innovation. john chambers will host a dinner attended by tech leaders. tomorrow perez visits facebook where he launched his face book page with the help of the ceo. >> he's going to visit and tighten up the relationship

between israeli high tech and american high tech. >> in his only public appearance, the 88-year-old president will address the sold-out crowd at san francisco's temple tomorrow night. >> jury selection in the domestic violence trial of san francisco's sheriff is set to begin this morning. a poll of 125 potential jurors will head to court. a separate hearing will continue on whether to allow ross mirkarimi's former girlfriend to testify. the san francisco sheriff pleaded not guilty to three misdemeanor charges stemming from an argument with his wife on new year's eve. the trial is expected to last two weeks. >> the oakland teen accused of killing his adoptive parents is expected to enter his plea today. 15-year-old moses kamin will be charged. his parents were found dead in their car. investigators say frustration over the teen's recent

suspension from school may have led to the killings. >> 4:34. former san francisco giants employee who admitted to stealing more than $2 million from the team is scheduled to be sentenced today. robin o'connor pleaded guilty in november to a federal wire fraud charge. o'connor embezzled $2.2 million between june 2010 and 2011 when she worked as the pay roll manager. she faces up to 20 years in prison. >> a fire in the bay view district is being investigated as possible arson. it began at an empty home on oak dale avenue saturday night and then spread to neighboring buildings. forcing about 30 people out of their homes. neighbors say they saw a ball of fire and then smoke fill their homes. they also say the building had been empty for years and they are not surprised by the fire. >> the city of millbrae council voted to outsource to the sheriff's office back in

november. the move will save about $1.7 million in its first year. and those savings are expected to increase during the five-year contract with the county. no officers were laid off and in all 18 workers accepted jobs with the sheriff's office. palo alto police are searching for a serial tire slasher. more than 50 cars were targeted along ventura avenue and ventura court early sunday morning. police say most vehicles had more than one tire slashed. any one with information should call police. >> residents and landscapers in burlingame may have to keep rakes and brooms handy. the council is considering tougher restrictions on leaf blowers. the proposal would limit the use to tuesday, thursday and friday for commercial gardeners and weekends for residents. right now they can be used seven days a week. the council meets tonight to talk about these new restrictions. >> state lawmakers from the bay area will ask for a state audit

to get a clearer picture of san jose's pension obligation. nbc bay area news obtained an exclusive copy of this letter here signed by seven senate and assembly members. it comes after an nbc bay area investigation found the city used an inflated estimate of pension costs in negotiations with unions and workers. the letter requests an audit of the past three fiscal years and pension projections. the council meets tomorrow to review the wording of a june ballot initiative dealing with pension reform. >> candidates are campaigning hard. california could play a big role in selecting the nominee. 11 states are getting ready to cast their votes. newt gingrich is predicting a win in georgia, his home state. >> very hard for one of the major candidates to not carry their home state and continue to move forward. >> the california republican

party is keeping a close eye on what happens this week, if there is no clear front-runner after tuesday, the california gop primary could for the first time in decades play a role in selecting a nominee. >> it's 4:38. i think all of us are talking about how gorgeous it was this weekend. let's check that forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. >> yeah, we're going one more day of temperatures near 70 degrees just about everywhere. unfortunately, it won't be as nice as yesterday. what a great day, we touched on the 80s. today we're looking like we're going to max out in mid-70s and most cities the general pattern will be upper 60s, low 70s. cold this morning, and it was not this cold yesterday morning. so even with strong high pressure in control the weather pattern is going to be a little cooler because of the cold start. 43 in sunnyvale. also we've got winds today. the winds are going to strengthen, a wind advisory later this afternoon and right

now things are looking calm but later on gusty conditions. i mean really gusty conditions for your east bay hills and the north bay mountains. look at your temperatures as of noon today. you'll be at 67 in san jose. a great day to head out. take advantage. 57 in novato. it will be cooler, temperatures starting to drop as we have a cold air mass on the way. and that means we're going to see a colder week on average. the seven-day forecast ready in my next report. first, let's get you out the front door with mike. >> good morning, folks. we'll take you to an accident in the process of getting addressed. this is westbound 24 as folks come off of the warren freeway. highway 13 and merging traffic, sounds like the off ramp was a launch point where a car went off the road. the car is down the ravine on the side but the driver called chp.

sounds like at least one unit is on scene. the person, no major injuries but you might see an ambulance arrive and we may see tow trucks and other vehicles. i'll track this but no slowing shows up there passing the 24/13 interchange. 880 past oakland coliseum, the volume very light. a clear view here in contrast with the fog for the golden gate bridge. keep in mind the pockets of very dense fog through the north bay and approaching the city. >> mike, thanks. 4:40. the daughter of a vallejo police officer killed in the line of duty last fall honored her father with a big accomplishment this weekend. the youngest daughter of officer kapoo ran the marathon. she crossed the finish line carrying the flag with the police department logo and was met by her mother with a big hug at the finish line.

>> good morning to you. welcome back. we'll give you a live look at a still dark san jose shimmeringing on this monday morning, march 5th. it's 4:44. >> a 15-month-old girl who was found in an indiana field after a tornado tore her house apart died sunday after being taken off life support. >> my pastor's going to go in with me and we're going to pray there and i'm going to tell that little girl that -- i'm going to tell her that it's time for her to meet her mommy and daddy. >> angel babcock's grandfather made the agonizing decision, her mother, father and siblings were killed by the tornado that left

their home in a pile of broken metal. the girl was found in a field. the storms which tore a path through the midwest killed at least 39 people. damage from the system was felt as far as florida where dozens were injured and homes damaged or destroyed. >> more of the deadly storms in the midwest are also taking their toll on insurance companies. for that and the rest of the news before the bell we turn to jackie deangelis. good morning. >> good morning to you. the insurance industry could face substantial losses this year after this weekend's deadly tornados in the midwest and south. it could be days before estimates are available but one risk modeling firm says this year's storm season is running 30% ahead of averages. until last year it was rare for a series of tornados to cause $1 billion in losses. futures are lower off a midweek for the market with concerns over greece's debt crisis.

china is lowering its forecast raising concerns that the world's second largest economy is slowing down. the asian and european markets are in the red today. oil prices are down below $106 a barrel, despite the shutdown of part of a major u.s./canada pipe line. much of the focus will be on friday's jobs report. we'll get data on the services sector and factory orders. we saw the dow slipping to 12,977, the nasdaq losing 12 to close at 2976. nissan may bring the datsen back. it could return the low cost car to the market in 2014 but maybe not in the united states. it debuted in 1932 and came to the u.s. in 1958, it was discontinued in 1986. back over to you. >> jackie, thanks so much. >> the last remaining resident in the royal gardens area -- look at that, the big island in hawaii is now homeless.

okay. we're going to jump back in time. let me tell you about the hawaii story. >> a little bit of relief, yeah. i've been packing in here for years. i won't have to do that any more. >> let me tell you what happened. his name is jack thompson. his home was surrounded by lava floe and by saturday the home was gone. he bought the property in 1972 and says he's known since the first lava floe in 1983 this would happen. nearly 200 residents once lived in that neighborhood. access by car was cut off years ago. >> wow. that's too bad. >> knew it was coming but you never hope it does. >> we enjoyed the nice weather this weekend. >> a little more today. >> then we get some rain and

then we're going to hop back up to the 70s next weekend. so, if you didn't get to enjoy it this weekend, maybe you had to work, you got stuck with chores you didn't want to do, women, you're going to get another round of 70-degree weather right in time for the weekend. we're going to have to get through active weather first. 44 in oakland, 37 in santa rosa. the golden gate bridge, it's foggy out there. but not everywhere. we have deep pockets of fog now filtering through the delta. that fog is creeping in and in addition we have some over the open water bridges. visibilities are looking pretty good. i'll let you know as they drop. we think the situation will get worse before it gets better. winds are calm but will be strengthening throughout the day. we expect gusty winds ahead of a system of low pressure that will bring us showers, but not until early tomorrow morning. clouds increasing throughout day ahead of the front. then our first showers at about 2:00 a.m. over the greater bay

area. places like san francisco picking up a little bit of precipitation. the good news about this is it will clear out our air quality. we tick off tuesday and wednesday. we get clearing so not expecting a lot of rain. sunshine for today, windy and cooler wednesday. through the weekend we're right back to the 70s. 71 saturday, a gorgeous weekend shaping up for us. like i said, we need the rain. i'll let you know how well we're doing in terms of our average rainfall. right now back to you guys. >> 4:49. federal prosecutors in the united states are seeking the extradition of mega upload founder kim dotcom. it's a file sharing website that u.s. authorities shut down. dotcom and several other officials accused of illegal

down loads of film and music and other content. dotcom is under arrest in new zealand. a hearing has been set for august. >> some people using credit unions have hit a record. more than a million opened new credit union accounts last year. that brings the number of credit union members to 92 million. that's a new record. the group says some were prompted by bank fees, others by the desire to switch from big banks to smaller ones. >> some students study medicine, communications. now you can get a degree in video game design. >> a number of colleges offering degrees in video game design almost doubled. this according to "usa today." the paper reports graduates can expect a starting salary of about $54,000 while those with graduate degrees average with $62,000 for starters. recent rankings from the

>> welcome back. a good monday morning to you. all quiet by the hp pavilion right now. hoping for another nice day on tap. 4:54. >> the plan to build a stadium for the 49ers faces what could be its final hurdle. a judge will hear arguments whether the financing should be approved by voters before construction begins. opponents of the project say the $850 million construction loan is too risky for the city of

santa clara. council members insists that residents will not have to shoulder the burden of repaying the loan. if the judge decides no voter approval is needed construction is set for summer. >> for the second day in a row the giants were involved in a strange incident at spring training. the game was delayed because of a swarm of bees. check out these bees in the dugout. they tormented players. crews used cotton candy and lemonade to disperse the swarm. that delayed the game about 41 minutes. the giants won, 11-1. the giants play a night game. you wonder if the bats will come out. >> i hope no one got stung. >> no reports of that so far. cotton candy. >> let's check the roads with mike. how's it looking? >> the old cotton candy and

lemonade. outside the caldecott tunnel, the earlier accident i told you about looks like all of the activity cleared so they're not concerned. no major injuries and no lanes blocked. if they have to send a crew there later on to pull that car off of the ravine, we'll let you know. obviously no injuries so that's better news. the san mateo bridge, a live look past highway 92 over the water. the taillights in the commute direction. no problems, no wind advisories and a clear view. we're watching the golden gate bridge for the fog advisory which is very different. >> alaska's sled dog race is under way. 66 teams hit the trail sunday in the official start of the 40th iditarod sled dog race. they cover more than 1,000 miles across frozen tundra to the finish line in nome.
