through, good shower activity to the south bay. san jose was doused with water. willow glenn as well. watch for slick conditions on local roadways. through the south bay area, campbell as well, got hit with light showers, more on the way. we'll be tracking those. first we'll check your drive in san mateo. >> now just a couple of flares because the sigalert has cleared. the san mateo bridge sign is also out. we see the camera shaking. there is a wind advisory that christina is talking about. this is how much it's shaking at the toll plaza. imagine how much the gusts are affecting you on the high rise or from the peninsula side. the golden gate bridge, no wind advisory but slick roads. look at the shine on the roadway. the slick conditions with the winds could be a big factor for a larger vehicle like van or motor homes. there go the crews getting the

cones set. >> 5:01. critical meeting this afternoon on san jose's pension reform. among the issues, should public employees pay more. bob redell joins us outside san jose city hall with the highly charged issue. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the city is expecting a full house packed with city employees and union members when the council meets later this afternoon to finalize the wording of its pension reform measure. the exact wording so the register of voters can get it on the ballot. mayor chuck reed has been arguing he needs to cut back on what it contributes to employee retirement because it costs too much. san jose pays almost $250 million a year for pensions. so today after much back and forth with employees and the union the city council is expected to approve language that would give current employees a choice. join a lower cost plan with lesser benefits or stay in the

current and contribute more. new employees would be forced sbo a lower cost plan and pay half the cost. it would be more difficult to collect disability benefits. assuming the city council approves this it doesn't become law until voters sign off june 5. this discussion over pension reform has been controversial, not only because they are ask ing employers to get less but bus mayor chuck vooed accused of inflating future pension costs by hundreds of millions of dollars as first reported by nbc bay area's investigative unit. >> 5:03. jury selection resumes in the trial of san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. the prosecution got a boost when the judge decided to allow mirkarimi's ex-girlfriend to testify in the trial. christina flores claims that mirkarimi abused her when they

dated. his lawyers want a change of venue saying a fair trial in san francisco is impossible. the attorney for his wife eliana lopez is challenging the admission of a videotape of her bruised arm. >> a follow-up on the oakland teen charged with killing his adoptive parents. moses kamin pleaded not guilty yesterday for allegedly strangling robert cayman and susan poff back in january. the 15-year-old confessed to police after they discovered the bodies stashed in a parked car outside their home. prosecutors say he unsuccessfully tried to set the vehicle on fire. he will be due back in court next m. the man charged with murder in a 1984 killing has pleaded not guilty. steven carlson is accused of stabbing a 14-year-old to death. he was arrested in august after

dna linked him to the kim. the two were classmates at the time she died. he is being held without bail in dublin. he is due back in court next month. >> what started out as an investigation into stolen ipads is now turning into one of the biggest drug busts in history. federal agents busted a giant meth lab hidden inside the woods apartments. more than 750 pounds of meth worth $34 million were seized. three people may also have ties to mexican drug traffickers are under arrest. they face numerous drug and child endangerment charges. there were two children in the apartment. >> how you could put kids in that kind of situation is mind boggling. >> less than 12 feet from where the methamphetamine was stored. and where the methamphetamine was not only being stored but converted. >> palo alto police stumbled

onto the drug find after following the gps of a stolen ipad. if convicted the three suspects could face 30 years in prison. >> the majority of phone lines are back up and running in morgan hill this morning after a major communication breakdown. thousands of verizon customers were disconnected for most of the day after a contractor accidentally cut a fiber optic line. phones were permanently busy. police say emergency services were never compromised. >> shimon peres is branching but into online social media. he will launch his own facebook page with the help of mark zuckerberg. stephanie is live in menlo park with what the 88-year-old leader hopes to accomplish. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. he hopes to accomplish a lot, in fact, his visit will be at 9:00 this morning along with his security of course.

he's part of silicon valley tour. he's going to visit google on thursday but seemed most excited about his visit to facebook at menlo park, set to launch his international facebook page today. this morning the 88-year-old is set to meet with facebook ceo mark zuckerberg after he visited ibm leaders yesterday and tour add research lab. it's part of an economic mission for the israeli president. perez says the visit to facebook is an effort to learn more about with social networking and how to use to the reach out to young arabs in places where israel does not have traditional diplomatic ties. perez expected to drop an interfaith crowd of thousands when he is set to speak at san francisco's temple emmanuel.

a timely talk as tensions rise over iran's move to develop nuclear weapons. back at facebook this event is closed off to the media and the public but he is street answer selected questions from facebook users during an interview with carol sandberg that will stream live on facebook. >> voters in sonoma will see a proposed sales tax increase on the june 5 ballot. the council voted last night to put the issue to the voters saying it's needed for public safety services. the sales tax is 8% so if voters approve the increase the sales tax would rise to 8.5%. that's 50 cents for every $100 spent. >> let's check the winds. check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> hey ladies, you know, the winds aren't that bad yet. they will substantially increase throughout this afternoon. after this weak front exits.

we have light showers coming through the south bay. and portions of the north bay as well. let's get to the radar. and show you what we're working with. as you can see we've got this light band of rain moving through san jose, cambrien park getting a little shower activity. morgan hill through san jose you might have to use your wipers. we have more activity starting to push on shore but overall we're dry along the peninsula. as we head through the next few hours this will be the case. light showers. nothing heavy in terms of accumulation. possibly .1 inch in the places that get the most. those will be the higher elevations. the showers are nothing heavy. the bigger component from the storm we deal with all day long, very, very strong winds. just hammering the bay area. especially the higher elevations and over your open bridges. if you drive a high-profile

>> welcome back. about 5:15 now. thousands of residents in australia are bracing for the worst floods in four decades. look at this video. much of australia's new south wales state is under water and river levels are continuing to rise. about with 9,000 of the town's residents have been moved to safer ground. there are fears the flood water may breach a levee. >> check our forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. >> 5:15, we've got showers on the radar, yeah, one of those mornings where you need to give yourself extra time, not only dealing with winds. we have rain and cold conditions. you need that jacket throughout the day today. most cities are not going to break through the 50s. i have not put the 60s on the temperate map today at all.

mid-50s as a matter of fact. 48 degrees livermore, 47 in san jose. 47 in sunnyvale. we're only going to climb additional 5 to 8 degrees. we have showers on the way. courtesy of a cold front that is moving into the bay area. but the showers are very light right now, moving through quickly from san jose to morgan hill you might have to use your windshield wipers. you have a little shower activity pass through. in the north bay we're dry, but expecting a little bit of the lingering action throughout the next few hours. the window will close for showers between 8:00 and 9:00, then the gusty winds start to pick up. you look at the key here, you look at the high end of the key when it comes to gusts. we're talking about gusts in excess of 40 miles per hour even on the valley floor so it's going to be a blustery day. you have loose objects you want to tie those down. you can see the situation gets worse before it gets better. winds at the strongest about

2:00 p.m. so strong that they could interrupt airplanes from taking off. you want to check throughout the day. if you are picking someone up or trying to get out of town check ahead with your carrier. these winds are going to do some damage. 73 by friday, up to 64 on saturday. i think a little disturbance might bring shower activity to the north bay and north of the golden gate bridge. sunday we climb back up to 70 degrees, then partly cloudy, 60s for monday. so overall through this active day, we're done. quiet weather for the rest of the week. >> folks, christina told you about the rain through the south bay so. i've been monitoring the sensors. we don't see anything major but i see southbound 101, a little slowing shows up between 680 and tully and capital expressway. that may be an indication of the effects of the rain but likely more folks hit the roadway. we do have reports of debris. a trash can rolling around on the road. but as christina is talking about with higher winds likely

are outside of the core would lose their jobs. no official word from yahoo!. >> the east bay's pandora reports profits after the closing bell. one analyst says he thinks all of the new mobile devices, iphones and ipads, mean more audience for pandora. you remember in the oakland occupy movement protesters were live streaming some of the action, particularly conflicts with the police. well, one of the occupiers, a bartender from san francisco, decided to continue his citizen journalism with a trip to syria to see the fighting there. >> my heart is beating right now as we're sitting this close. if we're discovered we'll either be arrested, captured, even killed. >> william gagen there on camera, jeff behind the camera, they thought real stream media wasn't telling the story. a number of award winning journalists died to bring you the story.

kelley. let's get straight to the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. you could see on the live look of san francisco, the shaky camera. >> shaky camera, yeah, the winds are a factor and we actually have showers out there. you might need to grab your umbrella in the south bay this morning. you can see the nature of these showers, they are moving quickly and kind of falling apart as they move on shore. as we head throughout the next few hours, our window closes. we're going to be done with the rain by about 9:00 a.m. and then the winds pick up, damaging winds potentially today. we'll talk about that and what's to come next. changes on the horizon. >> look at this, the bay bridge, one of the bridges that has a wind advisory. here is the camera looking at the bridge. we're getting hit with the wind here. you're going to get caught with gusts. getting sick as you watch. here's the golden gate bridge. a smooth drive here. the golden gate bridge does not have the wind but notice the

sheen, some slick conditions. the benicia bridge has a wind advisory. hold on tight. slow it down. >> good advice. thank you. jury selection continues today in the domestic violence trial of san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi. so far things aren't going so well for the defense. christie smith is live in san francisco with the latest judge's ruling favoring the prosecution. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. just about about every time we come reporters and photographers are surrounding the courtroom doors waiting to see who might show up to court that day. san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi's attorney has filed a motion to try to get the case heard outside of san francisco because of all of the high publicity saying it would be very hard for the san francisco sheriff to get a fair and impartial jury here. the judge has not made a decision on that yet. as jury selection continues, 54 potential jurors have been dismissed. they have about 130 more to go.

mirkarimi has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence charges after an alleged incident new year's day involving his wife eliana lopez. a neighbor takes her showing a bruised arm. the other key development, a gain for the prosecution, mirkarimi's ex-girlfriend will be allowed to testify. christina flores says he previously abused her during their relationship and allegedly grabbed her arm, too. mirkarimi's attorney says that flores' testimony was inconsistent. jury selection continues at 9:00. the trial was expected to start wednesday but may be delayed as lopez's attorney is seeking to get that video thrown out on appeal. live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> one of the groups trying to recall mayor jean quan is

calling it kits. the campaign called recall and restore says it has run out of money to pay canvassers and it won't make the signature deadline. it will join forces with the second group which needs 20,000 signatures by july. the campaigns are the result of complaints over handling of crime and the occupy protes. hundreds of millions in dispute over san jose's pension obligations. city leaders will take a step toward asking voters whether public employees should pay more toward retirement. bob joins us outside city hall with the focus this morning being on a june ballot initiative. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the city is expecting a full house packed with employee, members of public unions to be at the city council meeting. later this afternoon here at city hall. this is where the council members will be finalizing the exact wording of the pension

temperatures in the upper 50s. you can see right now the showers falling apart wam san jose to gilroy. to the east of livermore that's actually false echoes. that's how finite our radar is. you can see concord had shower activity. up to the north bay, a nice dry break from santa rosa down to petaluma. that continues all the way down the coast line through mill valley. throughout the morning we'll see this very, very small window for showers by about 9:00 a.m. it closes. we'll see sunshine. but there is cold air behind the front. now it's going to mif in quickly. temperatures only able to slime into the mid-50s. full sunshine later on because the wind will move in and start to clear out the clouds. winds will be the story of the

and neck in the polls right now. santorum has had a bit of an edge but it's been slipping over the last week if the you look at the tracking polls. romney has been gaining, so we'll see if that proves true once all of the ballots are counted. we're watching the south very carefully. newt gingrich down in georgia, expecting and hoping to win what for him for a long time has been a home state. he had hoped also to make sort of a southern sweep and add tennessee, maybe oklahoma to that. not clear if that's going to happen. he's not leading in the polls there. finally, don't count out ron paul. he is focusing on the caucus states, alaska, idaho, north dakota which is where he will be tonight. he is hoping to add one of them and be able to claim one of them tonight as his own. >> interesting to see. thank you very much. >> 5:43. the teen accused of killing three ohio high school students is heading back to court. 17-year-old t.j. lane will make his second appearance in

juvenile court this morning. prosecutors say lane walked into the school cafeteria february 27th and then began randomly shooting. five students were hit, three of them died. lane is facing three counts of aggravated murder. >> the suspect that injured gabrielle giffords will stay on forced medication. an appeals court ruled that jared loughner can be medicated to restore his competency to stand trial. his tofrns argued that he had the right to refuse the drugs. he is facing 49 counts that could lead to the death penalty for the 2011 shooting rampage that killed six and wounded 13 others. >> 5:44. we're learning more about the stories of survival from the tornados in the south and the midwest. in indiana a mother sacrificed her safety and used her body as a shield to protect her 8-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter as a tornado pulverized

not that cold. we're not going to get all that warm later on today with the cold front on the way. that's going to carry in a cold air mass. that kind of settles in so highs in the 50s. you need jacket just about all day long. you might not need the umbrella. the window for showers closes at about 9:00. everything we're watching now is very light and you might not need the umbrella. you can probably cover your head. the only showers we're watching now are down in the south bay, mostly dry over the greater bay area. the cold blast moves in next. what we're watching is the cold front is going to move out quickly. as it moves out high pressure is on the way back in. the two are working against each other. that creates a tight pressure 80 yent. blustery winds all day through the higher elevations. you want to tie down loose objects. winds at their strongest between about 2:00 and 3:00 and futurecast shows you that. winds sustained at 20 miles per hour in livermore. talking about sustained winds later on at 30, maybe 35 miles

an hour. so you're looking for the pink on the futurecast. that's an indication of when the strongest winds will be in your city. we stop at 9:00 a.m., getting very strong winds at the coast. we continue that, the winds start to really amplify in the north and the east bay. 3:00 p.m., wind at their strongest. then the winds subside throughout the night. this will be a wind event. keep that in mind even going out shopping you have to hold on to your grocery bags. 73 friday. saturday and sunday, thinking about the weekend, looking pretty good. make outdoor plans. a few clouds on saturday, maybe some showers for the first part of the day. looking dry and comfortable. let's check the drive with mike. >> you know, south bay looks nice now. we have no other accidents, the trash can has been cleared from 680. but we do have on surface streets, an accident, this is lawrence expressway, that's a pretty big intersection.
