tv Today NBC March 10, 2012 5:00am-6:00am PST
5:00 am
>> announcer: the following program is a paid presentation for zetox, the safe, easy and natural way to detoxify your body. don't just detox... zetox. >> i was so sick for so long, and nobody knew what was going on-- no one-- and i went to all these different doctors, and none, no one could provide a solution. >> my son has autism, so i was looking for something that was safe and natural. >> joint pain, delusional behavior, meltdowns-- sometimes very violent-- and he had a real inability to concentrate. >> announcer: are you tired? have no energy? forgetful all the time? have aches and pains? do you have headaches, migraines, mood swings or depression? do you suffer from digestive problems such as diarrhea,
5:01 am
constipation, heartburn and indigestion? the list goes on. these may be symptoms of heavy metal toxicity. we live in a toxic environment. our bodies are absorbing toxins and heavy metals on a daily basis. over time, these toxins build up in our bodies, and our symptoms get worse. we're not trying to scare you. these are the facts. >> the most recent research is showing a direct link to heavy metal toxins and many of the conditions that we not only see in our office, but conditions that affect a wide range of people in our society. >> announcer: from the paint in our home to the toys our children play with, we are surrounded by toxins in our everyday life. we absorb the chemicals from the plastics, cosmetics and cleaning supplies we use every day. from illness to everyday aches and pains, doctors treat the symptoms, not the cause. heavy metal toxicity is often misdiagnosed. >> unfortunately, we live in a very toxic world.
5:02 am
statistics will show that, annually, over four billion pounds of chemicals are released from various forms of industrial sources. >> announcer: evidence is building that heavy metal toxicity affects our long-term health. according to major news organizations and government agencies, these toxins and heavy metals are everywhere. >> heavy metals are all around us-- things like lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic-- we're exposed to them all the time. they're getting in our bodies. >> announcer: introducing zetox, the safe, easy and natural way to detoxify your body. zetox is effective because it works on a cellular level. when your cells are full of toxins and heavy metals, they can't absorb valuable vitamins and nutrients that the body needs. zetox has a cage-like structure that attracts these heavy metals and toxins like a magnet and traps them. zetox then safely removes the toxins from your body, allowing cells to absorb the vitamins and nutrients it needs for good health.
5:03 am
benefits of zetox may include more energy, less aches and pains, clearer thinking, a stronger immune system, clearer skin and better digestion. everybody's detoxifying these days, using juice fasting, raw food diets, colonic irrigation and enemas and many other invasive techniques. >> other detoxifying products, which can pull toxins and heavy metals out of the cell, will flood your body and overburden your liver to have to refilter them. this comes along with side effects known as a healing crisis. >> announcer: with zetox, it's easy and convenient. you add it to your daily routine-- one dropper-full in the morning and one at night. >> all it takes is one dropper-full twice a day for a daily maintenance of removing toxins and heavy metals. >> announcer: with zetox, there's no more effective or easier way. zetox gives you the foundation for good health. >> zetox really works. >> i feel great. >> this is an essential supplement that my family will never do without.
5:04 am
>> i recommend zetox to all of my friends. it's a great product. >> thank you, zetox, for giving me back my life. >> woman: does zetox remove beneficial vitamins and minerals? >> announcer: no. zetox only attracts toxins and heavy metals and will not take out beneficial vitamins and minerals. >> 15 years ago, i pioneered zeolite supplementation; there was no zeolite supplementation. at the time there were scientific studies being done by universities on the health benefits of zeolite, but it was unavailable to people. >> some of the feedback that i've been getting from the zetox users, they've noticed that they're able to focus better, they have more energy, better skin condition, they notice a difference in their complexion, there's just more life into their body. >> i take zetox every morning before i go to our senior center, and i... feel great all day long. i feel so good that i help people at the senior center that i go to that are younger
5:05 am
than i am, and oh, i feel wonderful. since i've been taking zetox i feel that i could go on forever. >> i used to dance ballet for years, but recently, i've been experiencing a lot of joint pain. my brother recommended that i try zetox and it's really helped a lot. >> i used to suffer with terrible allergies, and when the seasons were changing i couldn't even leave the house. but since finding zetox i have noticed a major difference. >> announcer: the main ingredient of zetox is zeolite, a natural mineral just like potassium or calcium. this alkaline mineral is formed when lava and ash from volcanoes have a chemical reaction with the sodium in seawater. this reaction creates a cage structure and negative charge which makes zeolite different than any other mineral on the planet. >> i spent three years testing samples from zeolite mines from all over the world. i was looking for the most pure and effective source on the planet. >> announcer: did you know the main ingredient in zetox,
5:06 am
zeolite, is used to help absorb and remove radiation? zeolite has been used in such events a chernobyl, three mile island, and as recently as 2011 at the japanese fukushima nuclear accident. if zeolite is trusted to remove radiation in such extreme examples as these, you can be sure it helps in an everyday environment. cell phones, computers, microwave ovens, as well as many other things in our life routinely expose our bodies to harmful radiation on a daily basis. our governments know what works for the protection against radiation-- shouldn't you? >> i was so sick for so long, and nobody knew what was going on-- no one-- and i went to all these different doctors and no one could provide a solution. they recommended that i check the house for toxic mold, and i did, and sure enough the whole house was full of it and i had been breathing it for a number of years. so i felt so horrible. i realized i had to feel better before i could solve the toxic mold problem.
5:07 am
the doctors then said, "well, i'm sorry, there's nothing we can do. there's no conventional medicine available to help you with this." i'm like, really? so i did my own research and super-excited to find zetox because as soon as i started taking it, the first few days i felt better and i was so grateful because i had this other problem to solve. this one, with me, was solved right away. >> everybody should be taking zetox: children, the elderly, everybody. >> my son has some issues with heavy metal toxicity and parasites and... [chuckles] the zetox worked wonders. we took him off his regimen a few months ago and the symptoms returned-- joint pain, delusional behavior, meltdowns-- sometimes very violent-- and he had a real inability to concentrate and to focus. so... [chuckles] needless to say, we put him back on the zetox. >> announcer: now you can have the detoxifying power of zetox. call now for this limited-time offer of just $39.95 per bottle,

you'll ever make. [♪...] it's time to feel like you again. don't just detox... zetox. >> i take zetox, i'm healthy. now we have to worry about you. >> announcer: for more information and to order online, go to zetox.com. >> my son has autism, so i was looking for something that was safe and natural, that would detoxify him from heavy metals. >> announcer: of the e.p.a.'s list of 275 hazardous substances, the heavy metals arsenic, lead and mercury rank number one, two and three. cadmium is number seven. these are some of the most common heavy metals that we are exposed to each and every day. >> the problem with all this, of course, is if you're loaded down with heavy metals, if you're loaded down with arsenic, lead, mercury and aluminum, nothing's going to absorb into the brain because the brain is a fatty tissue organ, and since
5:10 am
it's a fatty tissue organ, all of the toxins that the world gives to it, it loves to take and deposit there and hold them there, and therefore none of the good nutrients that can make up positive neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine or gaba, can get in. and therefore we need to remove these first before we're going to get anywhere with increasing brain health the way that we are by neurotransmitter balancing. >> there are other methods out there, but i wasn't comfortable using any of them. i was looking for something that was natural and safe and that had no side effects. >> other detoxifying products, which can pull toxins and heavy metals out of the cell, will flood your body and overburden your liver to have to refilter them. this comes along with side effects known as a healing crisis. >> announcer: another advantage of detoxing using zetox is there are no side effects or healing crisis. a healing crisis occurs when the body has to refilter the toxins and heavy metals that are
5:11 am
removed from the cells using other detoxification methods. the body is then overwhelmed by these toxins and heavy metals being pulled out of the cells all at once, causing the same symptoms as heavy metal and toxic poisoning. >> it's a very gentle way of detoxifying. there isn't any complications, there isn't any type of healing crisis. this is a very gentle way that... toxins being eliminated from the body itself. now that we have these cells nice and strong and healthy, now we're able to absorb these other nutrients that we bring in. >> my son can't swallow pills, so i put zetox in his orange juice a few times a day... and within a few weeks i noticed an overall improvement. he was more attentive and, and responsive and... every day he's improving. >> zetox is one of the few products out there. medical science hasn't been able
5:12 am
to provide us with anything to do this at this point. one of the few products that can be given to children, can be given to the elderly, can be given to those who are special needs. it has a wonderful taste for the children that they don't, that they like it. i know i've tasted it and i like it and i think that it's easy to give. it's not something that's difficult. you can slip it right into a drink and they'll be able to take it. >> when your body can't absorb nutrition, when it doesn't have the opportunity to take in the vitamins and nutrients and utilize them the way they're supposed to, you can't have the health and well-being that you want. >> woman: will zetox interfere with any medication that i may be taking? >> announcer: probably not. but, as with any supplement or medication, we recommend that you check with your pharmacist or health practitioner if you have any concern. >> zetox not only detoxifies, it also balances the ph. foreign cells thrive in an acidic environment. when you balance the ph in the body foreign cells can no longer survive. >> announcer: excess acidity in
5:13 am
the body weakens it. disease and illness thrive in an acidic environment. stress and the foods we eat are two of the most significant causes of acidic conditions in your body. zetox balances the body's ph. a balanced ph in the body is a healthy body, where our systems function to their optimum capacity. >> have you ever seen a swimming pool when the ph is out of balance? the pool turns green, things start growing in it. our bodies are mostly water-- 80 to 90% water-- so the same thing is happening here. our bodies are very fine machines. with the ph out of balance none of these things are functioning, none of our systems are functioning the way they're supposed to. >> i was so sick for so long, and nobody knew what was going on-- no one-- and i went to all these different doctors, and none, no one could provide a solution. >> my son has autism, so i was looking for something that was safe and natural.

she hasn't had a flare-up since. it's been four years. >> i personally take zetox on a daily basis. in 1967, when i was in vietnam, i was exposed to agent orange. recently at the v.a. hospital i was tested to see if there were still any chemicals left in my body, and the test came out negative. i truly believe that zetox made the difference. >> my name is jack, i'm 72 years old and i started taking zetox about a year ago. since i've been taking it i feel like i have the energy of a 30-year-old. i started working out three times a week, for an hour each time. the average person needs a cup of coffee or a nap by three or four o'clock in the afternoon. since taking zetox i have energy all day long. >> i was at the gym and i noticed my girlfriend's skin looking radiant, so i asked her what she was using. she said, "a product called zetox." i purchased it and i was amazed at the result. within a few days my skin was looking radiant.

every chance i get. tulips -- what could be better? in today's show, i'm gonna talk to you a little bit about how to keep these gorgeous tulips, once cut and brought in the house, where they'll last much longer. we're also gonna take a look at some beautiful new shrubs. in fact, we're gonna take a trip to michigan to look at some of the best for summer flowering. then we'll take a trip to denver, colorado, where i had a chance to visit a beautiful garden center. i had a chat with the owner about tulip bulbs and how to make the most of them. also, recently, i discovered some unwanted pests in my greenhouse, and i'll share with you how i kicked them out. and this delicious recipe? it's so easy to make. as you can see, we've got a lot going on in today's show, and we'll get started right after this. >> announcer: discover how to decorate your home with nature's beauty in p. allen smith's latest book, "bringing the beauty in p. allen smith's latest book, "bringing the garden indoors," on sale now.
5:33 am
>> smith: now that it's spring, it's the perfect time to begin thinking about making some changes in the garden -- creating some bold statements. now is a great time to go to nurseries and find a wonderful selection of shrubs. i recently went to michigan to visit spring meadow nurseries. now, the president, dale deppe, has a thing for new and exciting shrubs. he really has passion for them. >> one thing that really excites me about gardening in the summertime is the great color that hydrangea paniculata pinky winky brings into the garden. so, right now, you can see that the flower's fully white, but in a few weeks now, it will be pink on the bottom and white on the top. another great summer flowering plant is caryopteris sunshine blue. i like it because it's great in containers and it's great in the ground, as well. it's got golden foliage and blue flowers that flower in late summer.
5:34 am
it's low-maintenance and easy to grow in the garden. another low-maintenance plant is buddleia lo & behold blue chip. it's great with butterflies, looks wonderful in a container, and grows well in beds, and it flowers all summer long. and the blue flowers are really intense, and it's a great new addition to the buddleia family. another great garden plant for summer flowering is hydrangea incrediball. it's wonderful, because you can come out to the garden and cut some great flowers. incrediball is an easy-to-grow plant. it flowers every year. it just ties together your garden with this wonderful white color. so, plan ahead and remember to plant some great summer flowering shrubs. >> smith: after the break, i want to give you a few tips on these fresh-cut tulips, and we'll take a trip to denver, colorado, so stay with us. >> announcer: discover how to decorate your home with nature's beauty in p. allen smith's latest book, "bringing the
5:37 am
>> smith: okay, now let's talk tulips for just a moment. isn't this a beautiful flower? my goodness -- the simplicity of them -- well, they're just outstanding. it's amazing to me that you can take a bag of bulbs like this, plant them in the fall, and get such exquisite beauty. they're just amazing. now, i want to give you some ideas on how to make them last longer. after you bring them in from the garden, or if you pick them up at the store, what you want to do is you want to cut the bottom of the stem off just like i did here, you see? and you want to do it at a slight angle. and then place the tulips directly in fresh water. now, i learned from a dutch florist a long time ago. i said, "what's your secret to
5:38 am
making tulips last longer?" and she said, "i do nothing but use clean water." now, what this means is once a day, if you'll take the time to just lift out the bouquet and throw the water out and add fresh water, this will keep bacteria from building up in the water. see, tulips love to drink lots of water, so you want to make sure that the bacteria does not clog up its ability to take that water up. all right? you also want to keep as much foliage as you can out of the water. this goes with any kind of flower you might want to arrange. the other thing you'll want to do is you you'll want to keep your tulip arrangement, or even if it's a single stem, away from direct sources of light and heat. this will cause the blooms to open and close and you'll cut down on the number of days you can enjoy them. you see, if you cut them in the early morning, which i like to do, bring them inside. if you cut them when they're just beginning to show some
5:39 am
color, they'll last up to 8 to 10 days in the house, provided you keep them away, like i said, from direct sunlight. i just think it's a marvelous thing to grow tulips. they're so easy and so rewarding. okay, now let's turn from arranging tulips to planting them. back in the fall, i took a trip to denver, colorado, where i met the owner of city floral garden center, candace wickstrom. we had a great time preparing a giant container full of tulip bulbs. i'm here at city floral with candace. we're just about to pot up a major container of tulips. how's it going, candace? >> good. how are you? >> smith: i'm doing really well. you've got a beautiful place here. >> thank you. >> smith: well, you know, what i love are what i call singular sensations, where you take one variety of tulip and just pack them in. and, you know, if you say, "i don't have time to garden," that's just nuts, because this takes literally minutes to put together. there are basically four ingredients. >> that's right. >> smith: you have the container, the soil, the bulb, and some water. [ laughter ]
5:40 am
how easy could that be? >> that's right. >> smith: you know, i've used various-sized containers and packed as many as 75 bulbs, such as marine, a white one, in containers, and menton, which you have here, i see. >> we just take the bulbs and start layering them in the container. now, here in colorado, you know, it's a colder climate, and we do get worried about the bulbs freezing in a container. we try to leave a little bit of room, maybe a few inches, along the edge of the container. >> smith: so that serves as a little bit of insulation? >> right. exactly. >> smith: great. >> so even though we're going to do some things to protect it, about 6 inches deep you want to plant the bulbs -- of course, always the pointed side up. actually want to plant the flat side towards the outside. the first leaf of the tulip is gonna come out of the flat side, and just pack them in as close as you can get without their edges touching. we like to leave just a little bit of space so that the bulbs don't freeze and rot out

touching for that spectacular show of color in the spring. >> smith: once we put this layer in, we'll cover it with about 3 inches of the potting soil and then do another layer. >> and you can do it, just as we are here today, with just tulips for that massive impact, or you can layer with other bulbs, such as crocus or ascari or any of those. >> smith: now, what we have here -- it looks like about 24 bulbs in a circle, spaced as directed. this is the easiest way i've ever grown tulips. it's so rodent-proof, and the spectacular display -- you can have it so close to your house or your entryway. it's really quite beautiful. okay, so we have these layered, and the next stage would be to add more soil. now, i like to cover this with pansies or violas. >> that's a nice complement. >> smith: yeah, and then the tulips come right up through. now, i know a lot of people are concerned -- how do all those bulbs come through? they just do. now, tell me a little bit about frost protection.
5:42 am
what are some other ways you would give protection to containers? >> you can get some bales of straw, which you can usually find at a garden center, and, you know, put bales around the edges and then open up a bale and pack it around the outside. >> smith: on the top, as well. >> absolutely. so you can insulate that way. >> smith: we did a singular sensation here with menton, which will explode, but you could mix them all up if you like. >> you sure could. you could do a mix of various colors of tulips. >> smith: and early, mid, and late bloomers. >> you sure could. extend the life of your container. >> smith: very good. candace, thank you so much. >> thank you. >> smith: it's a joy being here at city floral. >> nice to have you. >> smith: okay, now, after the break, we'll see what's invaded my greenhouse, and a little later, this delicious recipe. take a look at this little guy. this is a bat-faced cuphea. and this variety is called totally tempted. it has nonstop bright red blooms like this all throughout the summer. it can make explosive impact in hanging baskets, beds, borders,

>> smith: i can't tell you how much i enjoy being out here in my little greenhouse during the winter. while the garden is certainly dressed in its winter clothes, in here, it feels like perpetual spring, and my houseplants are thriving -- well, sort of. i just discovered some of my little pepper plants that i tried to hold over from late summer and fall are infested with spider mites. now, this is a little, insidious creature that you need to be aware of, particularly during the winter months with your houseplants. it's particularly prone to get into plants like this beautiful ivy. any of the ivies you might have in your house, you should check them now for spider mites. they're tiny little insects that create a web-like structure, hence the name "spider mite." because, you see, they love the

dry conditions. in the house, it's dry. the soil gets a little dry, and they just jump out everywhere. they love my little needlepoint ivy, as you can see here, and i love this thing because, well, you know, it's got beautiful variegated foliage, and it grows with very little care. if you're spraying it, you want to get on the underside of the leaf, because that's where they love to hang out. now, what i like to do is just saturate the leaves like this, and doing it out here in the greenhouse, i don't have to worry about the spray getting on anything in the house. and the other thing that's good about using a safe product is that with this insecticide, i don't have to worry about breathing the fumes, which is really important to me, well, for a lot of reasons, but one is that i'm in this small, contained greenhouse, so you want to be careful what you use. this is an organic product. just a little winter tip for some of your favorite houseplants. >> announcer: this

5:49 am
typically buy these seedlings and six-packs that have already been started. it's much more convenient than starting them from seed. however, there are some exceptions, such as spinach, some types of lettuce, and arugula. i sow those directly in the ground. now, i don't want to mislead you. even though many of these vegetables are regarded as cold-tolerant, they all can be wiped out if we have a sudden, severe drop in temperature. you see, a cold snap can get them. so to help them along, i plant my early spring crops in raised beds. you see, by raising the soil, the temperature warms up just a bit earlier in the spring, and i can cover them easily with some sort of protective covering overnight, something like newspapers, old sheets, but i really like frost blankets. just remember to remove the covering the next morning. now, gabrielle, i hope that's helpful to you. you'd be surprised at how much cold some of these vegetables can really take, so good luck. now, when we come back, i'll meet you in the kitchen for a

delicious than this perennial vegetable. we grow several varieties here at the farm, one called atlas, another one called purple passion, and then one called uc-157, which isn't a very sexy name, but the yield is tremendous. i can always count on it producing lots of asparagus for me in the spring. now, if you want to grow asparagus, you have to have a certain level of patience. you see, the young crowns are planted -- usually 2-year-old crowns. in the first year, you typically don't harvest many of the spears. the idea is to get the plants established. then, in that third growing season, once they've been in the ground -- or the fourth year -- that's when you can really go out and harvest lots of asparagus. here we gather asparagus for about 8 to 10 weeks in the spring. you see, i like to cut them when the spears are about 8 to 10 inches long.
5:54 am
and what you want to do is you want to go in and cut right at the base. and you want to be careful not to cut any new emerging spears. and what's marvelous about asparagus -- you have to go out every day and watch because it just erupts out of the ground. now, what i have here is a very simple recipe, using that uc-157. "uc" stands for "university of california." and what i'm starting with is about a pound and a half of asparagus, and i'm dropping it into some boiling water, just to blanch it for about, oh, a minute. this is a simple nibble that you can create for folks while they're standing around talking with a glass of wine. i want to show you this very easy-to-prepare sauce that goes with it. now, what i have here is one cup of mayonnaise. and i'm simply going to add to that a tablespoon of french to
5:55 am
mustard, dijon mustard. you can see there. you can see this is gonna be very creamy. and then two tablespoons of horseradish. now, this gives it a real kick, perfect for the spring. and then some parsley. and you can use flat leaf -- italian -- or curly. and what i've done here is used some curly. and there's two tablespoons of that, fresh. and all you do is simply mix all of this together like this. and you can put it in the fridge and bring it out just before guests. and i'll tell you -- they will love it. it's the easiest thing you've ever made in your life. now, i don't like to cook my asparagus too long. i like a little crunch. and i think we're fine here. so, what i'm gonna do is remove this immediately into some cold
5:56 am
water. and that will keep it from cooking. i actually added a little ice in there to make sure it was very cool. and it'll have the most beautiful green color. lay it all into the pan all at the same -- ends all of the same. and i'll pat this dry. add the sauce into a nice attractive bowl, and there you have a lovely snack for people to have while supper's being prepared. >> announcer: delicious blueberries start with superior plants. delectable summer berries and beautiful fall foliage. try planting some blueberry shrubs in your garden. to produce an abundance of fruit, pick up a two-pack of the p. allen smith edible collection of blueberries today. for more information, visit www.berrynurseries.com.
