>> good friday morning to you. thanks for joining us. 5:00 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. we check in with meteorologist christina loren. we've been talking about a rough day in store. >> it's not just this day, we've had several days of relentless rain especially in the north bay and the coast. we've got a lot more on the way so flooding is likely. look at the front draped across the northern most portion of the state that is moving quickly. i'll let you know when we're going to get heavy rain into our city, that's coming up. already dealing with a couple of incidents. hey, mike. >> good morning. happening relatively quickly because we're getting a little break. here at the golden gate bridge, roadways still have that sheen. because of the overnight rains and you want to watch those off ramps coming off highway speeds. no major incidents reported.

oakland fine for 880 as well. we had four trees down for 580 and 880 for the morning commute. we're watching for that. >> let's hope it stays that way. >> this morning police still searching for a gilroy mother who may be seriously injured, hopefully -- we hope not dead. martha gutierrez has not been seen since wednesday when her son killed his sister and them himself. marla tellez is live where a large memorial is growing. a sad scene. >> reporter: very sad, jon. good morning. the memorial outside the redwood apartments here is growing. it made hot to the night. one of the candles is still burning. this is where people are leaving behind candles, notes and balloons for 11-year-old lucy luna. police say wednesday it appears her brother 27-year-old abel gutierrez, shot and killed her before turning the gun on

himself. the mysterious element is police say there is forensic evidence that suggests that lucy's mom, 52-year-old martha gutierrez who is missing, was critically injured here. police going as far as saying she may be dead. friends who know the family say the fact she is missing proves something is not right. >> martha would be here if her daughter was gone. martha would be right here. >> reporter: i spoke to gilroy police. they are asking any one with information to call them immediately. of course the fear is if she is alive she likely needs medical attention and needs it now. police say abel recently served in the iraq war and may have suffered from post traumatic distress disorder when he shot his sister before shooting himself. >> a san jose firefighter is in the hospital after suffering serious burns. this is an update to news

yesterday. the firefighter has burns on his hands, waist and lower body. he fell through the roof while battling an apartment fire. 17 people were displaced. investigators think the cause of the fire was burning candle left unattended. >> those are amazing photos. san francisco police looking for any kind of help finding two men they say beat down a hayward man. police releasing these pictures of the men they think were involved in the attack. they say the two men seen here beat the 23-year-old, knocked him to the ground, causing him to open hi lose consciousness. that man is still in serious condition and may not ever fully recover from all of the injuries. anybody with information on this is asked to call san francisco police. >> a former san jose police officer must now register as a sex offender. patrick deorego.

he was accused of having parties in his home and giving the boys alcohol before having sex with them. he faces more than three years in prison. he theft san jose police department the end of last month. he had been on administrative leave since his arrest. >> a vigil for an autistic man killed in a murder-suicide. mourners asking to show up at the front lawn of sunnyvale city hall at 6:00 to remember george. he was shot by his mother elizabeth, she then killed herself. neighbors think she was overwhelmed by the work taking care of her son. >> two wild fires in the sierra nevada, the utility giant and two subcontractors will pay $25.5 million to settle a pair of suits claiming pg&e power hines sparked wild fires back in

2004. the settlements will pay for fire fighting costs and the restoration of land. >> a little bit of good news for bay area teachers. fewer pink slips went out compared to years past. most of that has to do with the fact the districts are already running with reduced staff. the bay area news group reports no pink slips in oakland, unified and theese side in san jose. teachers were spared. other districts with taxes in place to help bring in funds, schools must issue final layoff notices by may 15. >> the wreckage of a helicopter remains in a palo alto pond. the robinson r-22 experienced engine problems on the way to the palo alto airport and had to make an emergency landing in a marshy area. the pilot suffered minor injuries. no one else was on board. the faa and the ntsb are both

investigating that incident. >> 5:06. santa clara cutting last minute deals to make sure construction for the new 49ers stadium gets started as soon as possible. the stadium authority meeting to approve a $950 million bank hoon and parking agreement with the 49ers. that could be issued as soon as next week. a non-relocation agreement was also signed, locking the niners into santa clara until 2054 a 40-year deal. a lease was also signed for the training facility and the headquarters. >> a pop you har summer attraction in the tri-valley area has a chance. last night an east bay park district committee over ruled plans to close a water slide. the slide is at the shadow cliff rec area. operators say they can't afford the $6 million needed for safety upgrades. the committee plans to ask private companies to foot the

bill. >> palo alto's emergency communication center on the move. starting today the dispatch center will be relocated to a mobile center. the relocation will last four days while they retrofit the main office. one block in downtown alto, forest avenue between ramon and bryant streets will be closed until monday to accommodate the operation. >> in an effort to keep their city safe, police in a peninsula city got creative. they noticed an increase in burglaries and thought they could do more to educate homeowners. they got a couple of cameras and made a video on how to avoid being a victim. police say when they finished, they uploaded the video to web links so residents can have access to another crime fighting tool. >> it's 5:08. check in with meteorologist christina loren in the bay area weather center. what's happening right now? >> we've got showers on the

radar. it's a friday, we want to get to you work safely so you can enjoy the weekend. we will have opportunities to get outdoors. maybe you have yard work to do. throughout the day we're going to see this major front side to the south that's going to usher in heavy rain even in the south bay where we've been sheltered from the heavy rain. now it looks like it's going to take its time. the heavy rain is about 56 minutes away from santa rosa and we'll continue to see the front sag to the south. temperatures are nice and mild during the 50s in san jose, 57 in sunnyvale and 55 degrees up in novato. as we head throughout the day, temperatures are actually going to decrease. so, we're not going sue see all that much warmth, that much of a spread. only about 5 degrees for most cities throughout the day with rain moving in by noon, even into san jose. so we'll continue to time out the systems, we have two more on the way.

a lot to talk about. let's see if there are problems on the highways. >> not yet but from that list of things we've got to watch out for the course of the weekend. right now the only accident that appears on our reports is eastbound 80. eastbound 80 getting away from the key are carquinez bridge and no lanes reported blocked. there are minor injuries so be careful. a car went into a pole. we're hooking at antioch as well. no slowing for highway 4. at g street both directions affected. the on ramp should be reopening in about a half hour. we'll get a live look and see how things are shaping up across the san mateo bridge. a clear view you can make out the high rise but again, the roadways are slick in many spots so watch especially the off ramps. back to you. >> thank you, mike. that free shuttle service between oakland and alameda will continue thanks to a new grant.

>> 6:14. weather permitting the santa cruz beach board walk will open to the public this within. the fact that the board sidewalk still around at all is thanks to some quick work by the maintenance crew. earlier this week the rain swollen river threatened to sweep parts of the 105-year-old land mark away. it took out a set of wooden stairs before they were able to build a protective berm to protect it. >> with all of this rain and wind, meteorologist christina loren tells us more of the same today and beyond. >> more of the same. what's interesting is a lot of the rain so far has been in the north bay and mostly north of

the golden gate bridge and at the immediate coast. today and tonight everything changes. south bay, we're going to see the core of this next system cross over us tonight into tomorrow so we expect pretty heavy downpours. not going to have to wait much longer for rain showers in the richmond district. you can see that activity ramping up. you do want to take it easy. give yourself time but you can see the bulk of the moisture is still pushing sue the northern most portion of the state and 56 minutes out from making its way in to santa rosa. we'll see this front slide to the south as we head throughout, probably noon into the evening hours. that's when it's going to start to get active. between 7 and 11 we expect maybe two inches of rain in the south bay. 57 in sunnyvale, 57 in san jose and 56 in livermore. you may have been able to give a

break. the cold blast moves in tomorrow, frigid conditions. cold enough to drop snow levels to 1,000 feet. we stop the clock, you can see the rain starting to push into the north bay that will move south through tonight. you can see getting very weight wet. if you are out and about, you want to travel cautiously. 4:00 a.m. saturday, a little break when the cold blast moves in. 12:00 p.m. saturday, light showers, those will continue for saturday. then sunday we get even more rain and a little more snow at 1:00 p.m. saturday and sunday looking cold. look at your temperatures. 52 degrees, that's it inhand on saturday. some thunderstorms as well. some could be strong, dime sized hail. so of course we'll keep our

quard up and watch this. we'll have more to talk about, what this means coming up. >> things are relatively calm but a lot of folks have yet to file reports. north of the carquinez bridge, heading away it's on the shoulder, you may have a lane or two blocked, maybe one lane at the most. this car went into a pole. no major injuries but an ambulance will arrive shortly. the commute direction across interstate 80, smooth drive, 19 minutes. bay bridge, neither of those have a wind advisory. we're watching the storms and potential of things like this. we've had a total of three trees down, so we're watching for more like that. that could be a major factor.

not even be alive. marla tellez is live outside the home in gilroy where the shootings happened. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's a heart breaking story especially when you see this memorial growing outside the apartments for 11-year-old lucy luna, people leaving behind flowers, notes, even this bike. one of the notes read lucy loved the color pupal and riding bikes. the question is where is martha and is she alive. gilroy police sent out a memo as the mother has been missing since wednesday night when 27-year-old abel gutierrez shot and killed his sister lucy before killing himself. police say there is forensic evidence that suggests that martha gutierrez was critically injured here and may be dead. abel returned from iraq and may

most of the bay area has had an opportunity to dry out for the past four or five hours. but not much of a drying out period but hey, we'll take what we can get with a hot of rain on the way. you can see getting a good line of showers, this is extending from vallejo down the marin county coast so mill valley pretty good rain. look what's headed our way into tonight. you see this convection, this is a very, very potential storm packing a lot of energy and very cold air. in fact, this could be the most intense storm of the kree in terms of the instability. we are expecting thunderstorms right here in the bay area. it works like this. showers return, very slick roads. it starts to get dicing. the front scheids south. we get heavy rain in the south

presidential candidates slug it out on the campaign trail. now the democrats are striking back. tracie potts is live on capitol hill where president obama and vice president biden are officially beginning their push for re-election. here we go, tracie. >> reporter: here we go. people have been waiting to find out what are they going to say. they don't have an opponent yet but yesterday vice president biden named all three of them, mitt romney, rick santorum and newt gingrich he said that if give at any keys to the white house as he put it they would not only drive auto companies into bankruptcy, he was talking about, to 500 auto workers, but also the middle class as well. he says that their view of the the economy is different. >> the president was in maryland talking about energy which also has become a very big issue on the campaign trail especially with gingrich who promises $2.50 gas. the president says it's not like you can wave a magic wand.

of rain in san francisco this week, almost an inch and a half in oakland. i told you the showers were on the way to the richmond district. watch out for light to moderate rain in the sun set district as well. this is going to slide south into south san francisco. we take you north and show you where the bulk of the moisture sits. the front is moving quickly and gaining momentum. over the past hour the showers just get heavier and heavier. you see that convection, this is a potent system. it's going to kick up a lot of instability and we could see strong thunderstorms as a result. 56 in oakland, it's mild out there. 57 in sunnyvale. 57 degrees in san jose. your future cast, we stop the clock at on. heavy rain in the north bay. it will get colder as well as we progress throughout the day. the upper 50s now, temperatures are going to drop. we get heavy rain across the greater bay area. the bulk of the moisture slides

to the south bay at about 9:00 p.m. the potential for flooding. if you are out and about you want to make sure you're heavy for -- ready for heavy rain. it's good to stay awlert conditions like this. you want to keep up your guard. rain and snow possible on highway 17 and grizzly peak. your temperatures are gone in the 50s. then mild for the past couple of days, the cold blast has not moved in. that's tonight and tomorrow. lasting through monday. by tuesday first day of spring, we clear out and get a dry break. >> it's getting more crowded for 4, typical pattern. one of our first slowdowns. 242 southbound and southbound 680 both reporting accidents before the merge. my guess it's the same accident, someone is confirmed which freeway they are on but that's

an issue. an accident around merge, possibly two. watch for slowing but sounds hike the cars are moving off the roadways. we'll look at the san mateo bridge. eastbound traffic continues to move past the toll plaza off the bridge. you don't have to pay the toll but there is an accident taking bout 20 feet of fencing. no injuries are reported. not a lot of slowing. we'll see if anything develops. as you get onto the freeway 92 is moving smoothly. some slowing out of the altamont pass in the commute direction. no incidents reported down to the south bay we have a mooth bay. looking good but blips here for 280 and 101. back to you. >> a little aside to the forecast, a warning to watch out for more falling trees as the forecast continues to call for more rain.

we're learning more about the man killed when a tree came down on highway 13. this is an update. the story we brought you yesterday morning, the victim is 19-year-old berk hi student kevin lacanlale. he and three passengers were on the side of the road when a second driver careened into lacanlale. >> the tenants of a building will have to find a new place to stay. the manager of the 27-unit complex says the damage has made the property uninhabitable. the fire destroyed six cars. it could take up to 90 days just to fix electrical system. >> the iraq war veteran jifred in a protest will file an official complaint with the city. scott olson's attorney, olsen
