on the way. >> two more storm systems, the next one pushing in. good morning to you. let's show you the radar and what we're expecting the bulk of the moisture is on its way to santa rosa. we'll be tracking showers throughout this broadcast and the "today" show for you. make sure you're ready for potentially two additional inches of rain in the south bay, maybe 5 to 6 inches of rain in the north bay. potential for flooding, we've got thunderstorms in the forecast. lots to talk about. mike has a sigalert in the east bay. >> no word on whether or not weather or conditions played a factor in this accident or these accidents, plourl. there might be confusion, they are both there but well, both on 242. one north of concord avenue, locking two left lane, the second to the south of concord avenue blocking two right lanes, with that the folks have to snake between the two. a lot of slowing down to 680.

use 4 over to 680. take 680 south. it's only a little longer. you get away from all of this activity. all of these folks out offant wok. we're watching it. >> thank you. 6:02. first a tragedy, now a mystery. police are searching for a mother after her son kills her daughter, then himself. marla tellez is live outside their apartment where a large mem jal growing. >> reporter: good morning. behind us is the read wood apartments where it all happened and the memorial for lucy luna includes a candle that continues to burn, this is where family and friends cathered last night for her. police say 52-year-old martha gutierrez could be the third victim of this apparent murder-suicide that happened

wednesday night. that is the last time she was seen when abel gutierrez shot and killed his sister lucy who that before turning the gun on himself. evidence shows martha gutierrez was critically injured and may even be dead. friends say they are baffled. >> martha would be here if her daughter was gone. martha would be right here. >> reporter: abel gutierrez may have been suffering post traumatic stress disorder. they were working with him to get in touch with the office of veterans affairs for help. i spoke to gilroy police. they say it's grit cal that they find martha soon. if you have information you are asked to get in kuch with gilroy police. >> a vigil for the victims of

plea deal to have three charges dropped. now george is telling the chronicle he wants to address the court. he says that he doesn't think that mirkarimi believes he's guilty of the false imprison. mirkarimi must attend domestic violence practice and serve three years probation. mayor he will remu the case, and then decide whether he gets to keep his job. >> former police officer must now register as a sex offender. patrick d'arrigo was accused of having parties in his gilroy home back in 2008 and giving the boys alcohol before having sex with them. he could be sentenced to almost four years in prison. d'arrigo left the san jose police department at the end of

be slick. showers will intensity. we're talking moderate rain even in the south day. the heaviest rain pours in. and then we've got snow on the way. the seven-day forecast in my next report. right now let's look at the roads with mike. >> some of the accidents, a sigalert because of two. southbound 242. this is north and south of concord avenue. a knock two left. the folks are snaking through. the other part of the triangle, westbound 4 to southbound 680, get around it. it only has a shors distance. a lighter volume at 680. we'll watch as this shifts your commute. potentially. we're hooking at another

accident. this is westbound highway 4 off of 680. the walnut creek interchange. this may be affected by weather though these do not show any problems. just watch out. as you approach the bay bridge, that's enough smoother. friday generally sees a lighter community. we'll get a live look at the golden gate bridge. slick roadways build. we have a report of an incident, a tree down old. yet we're still following because trees continue to be reported down around the bay area. >> upping up we're learning more about the column her opposed of going on a killy degree.

>> wx welcome back. we're learning more about the accident blamed on weather. this a follow-up to a story breaking this time yesterday. kevin lacanlale died on highway 13. he hit a tree that had fallen across the road but it was a second vehicle that ended up killing him as he stood outside his car. lacanlale's hit the tree, then a driver of a truck also hit it and hit the student. lacanlale was from washington

state. >> in the meantime, san jose firefighter is in the hospital after suffering serious burns fighting a house fire. this is an update to news rebrought you yesterday. firefighter has burns on his hands, waist and lower body. he fell through the roof of that building while battling an apartment fire. 17 people were displaced. investigators think the fire was caused by a burning candle. >> caught a few people by surprise, a shark sighting, a great white off santa cruz beach. someone spotted it attacking an elephant seal. they say it is common to see seals and sharks in the area. >> we're getting a look at the damage created by a tornado in michigan that destroyed 13 homes causing significant damage to 105 other homes index ter,

peek. right now we're mild. and this system, this potent system packing so much energy is going to push into tornado alley and this could wreak havoc next week. wednesday into thursday we'll be very active. two days to watch out there especially if you'll be flying into the area. midwest and the deep south, i'd sigh check ahead. this system is going to ap pli fi. so this is what we're looking at. heavy downpours coming down. up in the northern most portion of the state you can see a lot of this green turning to red and orange, this is heavy rain hammering eureka on its way toward the bay area. it's going to time out like this. by noon more moderate rain. not so much of the light stuff in the north bay. through 4:00 p.m. we'll get some of the rain down in the south bay. through tonight things start to

change. we've got a lot more. getting hammered along the marin county coast and then all of that rain potentially 1 to 2 inches moves into the south bay between 7:00 and 11:00. if you're out tonight make sure you're ready for that. a bad night for the open-toed shoe. 1,000 to 2,000 feet on saturday. the same for sunday because we haven't dealt with the cold blast. we're down to 52. 53 on sunday. rain for monday. then the first official day of spring, tuesday, we get a dry break. betterw on the way next week. check your drive. mike is busy this morning. >> we're going to get busier but right now the maze at least moving over to the bay bridge, that commute is looking fine so lighter volume. i mean we have this significant

alert. we had two separate accidents. blocking the two right lanes off of 4. my alternate is westbound highway 4 over to the 680 southbound that will take you past the accident completely avoiding 242, where all of that slowdown continues there. no major injuries, working on getting that cleared. here while this is clear, clearing up as far as livermore goes, an easy drive for 580, 16 minutes all the way to the dublin interchange. a little slowing around hopper. that's traditional as you approach that 680. just traditional blip for 238, holding steady. off of the san mateo bridge, there is an accident. we'll get a live look. a far in the -- near the toll plazao the eastern side. on this side of the freeway after of the bridge.

the car itself is began and there are no injuries. they may have to do repair work later in the day. no major issues. highway 87 starting to show slowing. >> thank you very much. we could soon learn the name of the soldier who allegedly massacred 16 civilians. nbc news reporting his name will be released today. we've learned the 38-year-old staff sergeant is married with two small children, his lawyer says reports of marital problems are not true. >> he says the 11-year veteran did not want to return to the war zone for a fourth tour. he points out the soldier saw fellow soldier's leg being blown off the day before he allegedly killed 16 civilians. the staff sergeant is being held at a u.s. base in kuwait. >> coming up you can be there to watch olympic opposefuls on the road to london.

iraq war veteran. marla tellez is live outside the home where the shootings happened. just a tragic and sad scene there. >> reporter: yeah, jon, good morning. it is a heart breaking story, very tragic. it's baffling and mysterious. friends and family building this candlelight vigil for lucy luna, in front of the redwood apartments. they left flowers notes. one says may god enjoy your company. they left plenty of tears. >> she passed away and that is a shock to me. >> reporter: this is where police say it appears that lucy was shot and killed by her brother abel gutierrez. he is an iraq war veteran. the baffling part is lucy's mom,

52-year-old marta was here that night and has not been seen since. they have evidence that this is a chance she's thot even alive. police say they have sent out a memo to law enforcement state wide and open that -- if she is alive that she needs medical attention and needs that now. if you know anything call gilroy police. live in gilroy, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> dangerous situation for napa firefighters as a home filled with weapons and ammunition goes up in flames. the fire started in the garage of a house on mustang road. it quickly spread. firefighters had to keep their distance as they fought flames because so much ammunition in the home was exploding. the homeowner, a man in his 70s, managed to get out.

morning. president obama and vice president joe biden officially begin their push this week for re-election. they are lashing out against the republican rivals. tracie potts joins us live from washington this morning with more on the race for the white house. here we go, tracie. >> reporter: here we go. this is really sort of the first time we heard them address them by name directly on some of these issues. vice president biden yesterday speaking with auto workers, union workers in toledo, ohio said that mitt romney, rick santorum and newt gingrich have given the keys to the white house as he put it would drive not only the auto industry but the middle class along with it into bankruptcy, referring likely to mitt romney talking about the auto industry going into managed bankruptcy. they have a different idea how to fix the economy. we heard mr. obama talking about newt gingrich and how he promised to drive down gas

>> welcome back. 6:47 now. we are bracing for these storms headed to the bay area. >> a lot of rain, a lot of wind. so more downed trees, mudslides and rock slides are likely. let me tell you why. we're getting a dry break but your ground is saturated. there's a lot more on the way. no two storm systems are exactly the same. the difference between this one and the last one that came through, it's packing about as much moisture but the winds are going to be so much stronger. we're talking about a lot of instability tomorrow capable of generating strong thunderstorms so this system is packing a lot of energy. you can see that hammering the coastline up in northern

california. this is headed our way. spotty showers until about 1:00 p.m. we stop the clock you see it's getting active. saturated and soaked in santa rosa. more rain, two to four inches by 7:00 p.m. heavy rain over the city of san francisco moving south along the peninsula making for a rough commute home. then by 9:00 p.m., look at the south bay, the heaviest of the rain out of the system at about 9:00 p.m. santa cruz mountains saturated. look at the wind. we stop the clock at 9:00 p.m. when you get the heavy rain. gusty winds, very heavy rain, at the same time very dangerous conditions. you probably want to avoid the area all night saturday. all the way through sunday and monday with more rain in the forecast. by 5:00 a.m. st. patrick's day the winds are gusty. look at the key. we're on the high end of that key with 60 miles per hour wind gusts. starting to lighten up.

throughout the remainder of the day pretty strong winds so it's going to be cold and showery with the windchill factor. because it will be cold our snow levels are going to potentially drop to 1,000 feet. that means we could see snow over the summit in addition to the heavy rain and the gusty winds. interesting setup. by monday we get rain showers. tuesday, first official day of spring we get a dry break. 6 they degrees. by wednesday, nice, 67. warmer days ahead. we've got to get through this system. another one on its heels. getting out of the woods late monday into spring. let's talk to mike about your drive. >> highway 4, we have a typical build through antioch. the earlier accident here on 242 stirred things up. that sigalert and the three accidents in the area, not like they all cleared. i know 242 is clear, concord had

an earlier accident. these folks using westbound highway 4. thank you for using the alternate i suggested. now stop because we want flow to what people expect. 242 is again open. slowing through walnut creek. an earlier accident for 24 off the interchange has cleared. the east shore freeway, 40s and 50s off the richmond bridge. not so bad. 22 minute drive off the carquinez bridge. the metering heights are on at the bridge. a stall around treasure island. one or both will be affected by crews heading to the bridge. no slowing there. further south, the san mateo bridge we talk about eastbound direction. following this, reports of a car far along the high rise, haven't seen major slowing. we're looking at the hayward side, those are some typical
