pinched me because i forgot to wear green. >> oh, yes. >> what am i thinking? i have kids, too. >> i know. we're going to get pinched a couple more times when you go home. green on the radar this morning. right now, things are winding down from this big system that came in last night. we had 12 to 15 inches of ren. 3.5 inches in ben lomond. the front came through, dropped about a half inch of rain. santa cruz mountains, areas south of morgan hills seeing showers as we tilt the radar for you. we can see how most of the moisture for now is swinging through central and southern california. we will see this afternoon, sunny breaks with showers especially around the hills. a slight chance of thunder. what you're seeing there is actually snow east of san jose up towards mt. hamilton. the temperatures will be quite cool. even if the sun breaks we're looking at mid to upper 50s. coming up we'll let you know if showers will also be in your

sunday forecast. we'll have that for you coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you very much. this morning nearly all power is restored to pg & e customers in the east bay. scattered showers replaces heavy rain and wind that took out electricity in walnut creek, concord and lafayette. "today in the bay's" stephanie trong has this story. >> reporter: elizabeth gilbert of concord kept her friday date night with her husband of 28 years. >> it was quieter, easier to find a parking place. good night to go out on a date, bring the kids with us. >> reporter: the rain blew out power in parts of downtone and south walnut creek. pg & e says a transformer near concord blew out. the cost is still unknown but people have reported seeing lightning in the area. with the scare in concord where someone reported a 16-year-old boy may have entered a canal on a boogie board just as it grew

dark. rescue crews used thermal imaging technology to search the waters but called it off an hour later. >> pretty devastating. >> reporter: in monty rio, this is what dave gardner came home to, a large fir toppled on to two houses. like a knife, it slashed the first home in half and demolished the other one. he spends time in the kitchen right where the tree fell. he's counting his blessings but was still in shock. >> besides the house burning to the ground i don't know that it could get much worse than this. >> the grounded is saturated. these large firs, their life span after about 100 years, they have a shallow root system and it's not uncommon for these trees to come down. >> at sfo, the stormç forced cancellations and delays, some up to four hours. bob could care less about flight impact. he's been farming for over 30 years. >> we live or die with water. because we irrigate all our crops and so we're hoping this helps. >> plenty of activities this

weekend, including today's st. patrick's day parade and festival in san francisco. if you're planning on going along with tens of thousands of people, don't worry, organizers say it's happening rain or shine. don't forget your rain gear. in walnut creek, "today in the bay." folks in the south bay were probably thinking the big rain event was rain out for them, then came the early evening downpour on highway 9 through saratoga, heavy rain and wind knocked several tree branches to the ground. that happened near the saratoga springs picnic resort. just down the road on highway 9 near redwood gulch road, enough rain for a mudslide. investigators blame the storm for a fatal crash on highway 17 earlier in the day as well. there, one person died when two big rigs collided head on at laurel road. the northbound lanes were shut down for quite some time while crews investigated and cleared the roadway. you can check out the interactive radar anytime you want it or need it. nbc bay area.com.

there you can zoom in to see the conditions in your own city or town. coming up, meteorologist rob mayeda's full forecast for all of the plans you have for this weekend. turning to gilroy now where the family of a missing mother says they have come to accept that she is most likely dead. gilroy police detectives say they found evidence of a violent assault in 27-year-old abel gutierrez's car. they believe gutierrez shot his mother, 52-year-old marsha gutierrez in the car and went home and killed his 11-year-old sister before killing himself. the 27-year-old was an iraq war veteran and suffered from post traumatic stress disorder. we spoke with a doctor who says it is often very difficult for veterans to admit they need help. >> going for help is an act of courage and confidence. it's not an act or admission of weakness. it's something that's a way of taking control of your life and

doing something healthy and positive in the face of the symptoms, reactions a person might experience. >> a family member told nbc bay area news they had been concerned about abel's gmental state for a while. they knew he had guns and had they confiscated the weapons back in february he believes this whole tragedy could have been avoided. we have new details on a story we brought you earlier this week. three days after a campbell nanny was charged with molesting five young girls, prosecutors say they identified eight victims, possibly a ninth. john walker is behind bars charged with lewd acts on a child. he's expected back in court on tuesday. he's been a long-time nanny in the area and also worked at child care centers. earlier this month, two families contacted police with claims that walker had inappropriately touched two girls.

a judge in oakland will release most of an investigation into the now infamous uc davis pepper spray incident, though some parts will remain sealed for now. campus police wanted the entire report on the november 18th incident under wraps because it contains information about individual police officers. on friday, the judge decided to withhold the portions of the report which named specific officers and criticizes their actions. university officials say they don't know when the partial report will be released. and another failed attempt to save the gold dust lounge in san francisco. san francisco city officials say the bar does not qualify for historic landmark status. a report released by a city commission found while the bar is an important local gathering spot, it doesn't quite meet the requirements to be an historic landmark. the owners of the gold dust lounge are trying to keep their business from being evicted by their landlord who wants to turn the bar into retail space. the historic preservation commission will take a final

vote next week on the status of the bar. and believe it or not, at the same time, many people tried to cut the fat from the diet, other people are stealing the fat for sale on the black market. restaurant grease is now the easiest thing to turn into biodiesel fuel to help power eco friendly vehicles. just like gas prices, grease prices are rising an an alarming rate, prompting thieves to show up at restaurants late at night with special equipment to suck up the leftover grease. officials say grease thefts account for millions of dollars in losses each year for industries that collect and process the grease. the u.s. military releases the name of the soldier accused of killing 16 afghan civilians. this morning, his neighbors back at home are reacting to thatç news. what they're saying about the man and his family. and cracking under pressure. the man who produced the viral documentary kony 2012 is detained by police after having a breakdown on the coertr.

this is "today in the bay." good morning 20 you. looking live at a very pretty picture of san jose this morning. some clouds in the distance but most of the rain has moved out. rob mayeda tells us when we can expect it to come back. the u.s. soldier suspected of killing 16 afghan villagers is now at a u.s. military prison at ft. leavenworth, kansas. 38-year-old staff sergeant robert bales arrived at the prison on friday night. in a statement, army officials say bales is being held in his own cell. this is the facility where military inmates requiring post-trail confinement are taken. bales is accused of going on a shooting rampage last sunday, killing nine afghan children and seven other afghan civilians. bales identity was first revealed yesterday. this morning, friends and neighbors are still in shock.

reporter andy moreno has more from the family's neighborhood in washington state, about 20 minutes from tacoma. >> before last week, robert bales was known as a highly decorated member of the military. now he's accused of murdering afghan civilians. for those who know the father of two, it just doesn't add up. >> he was always happy, happy guy, full of life. i really wouldn't expect it. >> reporter: bales and his family have lived in this neighborhood for about six years. neighbors say he was friendly and outgoing. >> i'm just waiting for something to come out to where it wasn't him that did it or there's more involved, because he was such a great guy. great family. >> reporter: bales has been stationed at joint base lewis mcchord for 11 years, his entire military career. he had three tours in iraq and now this last trip to afghanistan. his attorney said it was too much but neighbors did not want to speculate. >> he seemed normal. he was a normal guy.

>> reporter: bales wife grew up in bellevue, her parents still live there and neighbors describe them as a good family. >> this is -- this is just a tragedy for everyone concerned. and our heart aches for this family. >> reporter: while bales waited for an expected court-martial, his wife and children have been moved to jblm for their safety. friends say they'll try to support them however they can. >> they are a tight family and they will come through this. >> now, here in the bay area, afghans living in the east bay will hold a vigil for the civilians allegedly killed by that soldier. the candle light vigil will be held today in fremont at the amtrak and altamont cométer express station. they are inviting people of all backgrounds and faith to attend the event. the vigil will be held this afternoon rain or shine from 2:00 to 4:00.

the man behind the kony 2012 film is getting unwanted media attention. jason russell is the co-founder of invisible children. he was detain by police in san diego after he was seen ranting naked on a street corner. he was taken to a medical center for evaluation after that very public display. >> statements that he was making, there were questions about his overall ability to form criminal intent. so it was determined that medical evaluation and treatment was a better course of action than arrest. >> invisible children released a statement saying russell is suffering from exhaustion, dehydration and malnutrition after a media blitz that was at times critical of his kony 2012 video. the video alleges atrocities against children by an african warlord. it has been viewed more than 100 million times on youtube. actor george clooney is a free man following his arrest during a protest outside the sudanese embassy in washington, d.c.

clooney was arrested while protesting alongside his father, nick clooney and martin luther king iii. police say they warned them three times not to cross a police line outside that embassy. the men were taken into custody and released several hours later after paying a $100 fine a piece. the arrest comes days after clooney appeared at a senate hearing accusing sudan's president of blocking food and aid from entering a border region in south sudan. still ahead on "today in the bay," wall street finishes strong with a steady rise throughout the week. we'll take a look at your business headlines. plus, most whale watchers don't get this lucky. we'll show you where this video came from, next. in the weather, you can see a few breaks in the clouds around san francisco as we wait, more showers to come in, maybe a chance of afternoon thunder. we'll talk about it, coming up in your st. patriba d.ay rehe come righ back ck

this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. one of the other after-effects of this stormy, stormy weather, we're looking at a live picture in menlo park where a massive tree has fallen on to a two-story home there. it happened in the last couple of hours. we do know there were folks home at the time. hopefully they've made it out uninjured. a massive tree, good reminder to check out the trees on your property. make sure there's no heaving. call in a professional you feel any trees on your property are in damplger like this one. whale watchers in southern california had a sighting they will probably never forget. >> oh, my god, this is so cool.ç >> those are two massive gray whales that approached a boat

outside dana point harbor today in orange county. both whales rubbed the vessel like cats against the stretching post. just inches away from awe-struck passengers. how lucky that someone thought to roll tape on that one, rob, because how many big stories have we heard like that? where they're like, i'm the only one who saw it. >> just thinking of how powerful those creatures are, just nestling in next to the boat to get a scratch on their back. heavy rain moves on. it's chilly. 30s on north bay and inland valleys. patchy fog around santa rosa and napa. cooler air moving into bay area right now. just a brief break from the rain. we're seeing scattered showers moving into the santa cruz mountains. we'll see scattered showers and possibly a recipe for thunder. cool air aloft, daytime heating thrown in. it will destabilize the atmosphere. snow levels pretty close to

2,500 feet. the radar shows you most of the action is zipping in towards the central california coast. you can see some showers here from santa cruz up towards the summit around ben lomond. as we put this on an angle for you, you can see a little spin taking place off the west of central california. this is going to dive into central and southern california today but we have these little bands of showers which are going to continue to drift on through during the day today. while the more active weather likely will be south of san jose for the afternoon, for the rest of the bay area, we'll see the showers picking up as we go through the day. 9:00 this morning, kind of like you're seeing right now on the radar. showers to the south. as we head through the afternoon, around some of the hilltops, the showers fire up and look at the snow there, around mt. hamilton as the air is quite cold to support that. during the day and as we head into the evening, widely scattered showers. highest concentration of showers for the first half of the day will be south of san jose. then we'll see more showers approaching the north coast as we head towards the evening.

it's important to point out we should not be adding up rainfall in inches this weekend. more in the way of scattered showers as we go through the day today. our rainfall totals will vary. you'll get a brief downpour which will change the numbers a bit. the heavy rain seems to have moved on. in the sierra, heavy snow at times, mainly south of highway 50 today. winter storm warnings for the central and southern sierra for the afternoon. highs in the upper 50s. a mixed bag of pretty much anything. a little bit of sun at times, scattered showers and cool temperatures today. looks like we will see another round of showers for tomorrow and then finally, a much-needed break. we did need the rain and the snow. now we need to dry out. at least we should see that for the first half of the week. maybe a few more showers come friday and next saturday. i've been trying to have a garage sale, right? never. it's been so completely dry. >> you jinxed up. >> i think so. >> middle part of the week will be better. >> good sign nobody wants my stuff. thanks, rob.

wall street hits a high note as the markets enjoy a steady rise all week long. cnbc's tyler mathisen takes a look at the past week in the world of business. the markets have been on a role la roll lately. for the first time ever the dow topped 13,000, the nasdaq hit 3,000 and the broader s&p 500 index rose to 1,400, all on the same day. more good news about jobs, first-time jobless claims hit another four-year low last week and unemployment rate fell in 45 states in january. that's a sign that the rebound in hiring is not just regionalize but nation wood wide. shares of apple briefly touched a record $600 each this week on anticipation of its newest 4g ipad which went on sale on friday. shares of apple up 45% since the start of this year. after 244 years in business, the

this is "today in the bay." good morning again. well, today is st. patrick's day. and thousands of bay area residents will participate in some kind of st. patrick's day celebration. but how did the holiday get started here? according to historians, st. patrick's day was brought to the united states by early irish

settlers who were showing honor to the man that first brought christianity to ireland. with the dramatic increase of irish immigrants in the mid19th century, the march 17th celebration became more widespread. the first recorded st. patrick's day parade was not in ireland but in new york city in 1762. and there are plenty of events planned around the bay area to celebrate the wearing of the green. not least of which is, of course, the san francisco parade. the annual parade has been a tradition for more than 160 years, making it the longest running st. patrick's day parade west of the mississippi. and while there may be rain on this parade, organizers say it will not dampen their spirits. the events kick off at 10:00 at civic center plaza, rain or shine. and if you're looking for a place to celebrate st. patrick's day in the east bay, you can head over to danville. norm's place in downtown danville is holding its 7th annual st. patrick's day party. organizers say there will be bagpipes, drummers, irish dancing and perhaps most

we are looking live at a tree that fell on a two-story house in menlo park. no injuries. we do have the rest of the details on that story coming up for you. thanks so much for joining us on this soggy saturday morning. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda. we're not just seeing green in people's wardrobe this morning. we're seeing it on the radar. >> on the radar, too. it's been a week. we've had the steady rain, the grounded is saturated. when it gets breezy like it was overnight, it doesn't take much to bring down some trees. you can see the rainfall we've had in the last 24 hours. larkspur, almost 3 inches of rain, san jose about a half inch or so. there is green on the radar, mainly south of morgan hill, around the santa cruz mountains. a lot of the energy we're seeing on the radar. i do think it will hit the south bay and go through the central california coastline today. as we go hour by hour, notice the snow around mt. hamilton.

that's east of san jose. midday, we see the showers become more widespread around some of the hilltop locations and throttle back towards the evening before more showers go into sunday. as you no doubt noticed, the ground quite saturated. can't really take much more rain right now. >> we saw the tree down in saratoga boulevard and a couple other places. we'll get to those in just a moment. we do want to go back out to menlo park where we have new details for you this morning. this is a massive tree, looks to be an oak, perhaps a scrub oak that fell on a two-story building. our photographer there on the scene did talk with the homeowner this morning who said the whole house just shook when this tree came down. it was just around 6:00 this morning when that tree fell on to that first -- that second story of that two-story home. you can see some of the branches went into the first story as well. there were folks at home at the time, though no one was injured.

gulch road, the rain caused a mudslide. dangerous car jackers on the loose. san jose cops are on the lookouç for a man and a woman they believe responsible for numerous car jackings, robberies and even a home invasion. 39-year-old roland ramirez and 28-year-old francesca galope are both from san jose. they stole a vehicle from a gas station on thursday night and led police on a short high-speed chase on highway 85 before police called off the pursuit. officers later stormed a house where ramirez was believed to be but the house turned out to be empty. the family of a missing gilroy mother says they have come to accept that she is very likely dead. detectives believe 27-year-old abel gutierrez shot his mother in his car and then went home to murder his 11-year-old sister before turning the gun on himself tuesday night. police say there is evidence of a violent assault in his car and

they found his mother's cell phone but still no sign of 52-year-old martha gutierrez. the son was an iraq war veteran and suffered from post traumatic stress disorder. a family member tells nbc bay area news they had been concerned about his mental state for a while and family member says that police even knew that gutierrez had guns and had they been confiscated back in february, that family member believes this whole tragedy could have been avoided. berkeley's police chief has admitted he was wrong to pressure a reporter to change a news story but that's not enough for the city's rank and file. the berkeley's police union asked the city to organize a formal investigation into his behavior last friday night when he sent the sergeant to the home of an oakland reporter with a demand that that reporter change a story posted online. the union asked the interim city manager to name an independent investigator. the city released a statement acknowledging that it has hired

a law firm to further examine the issue. and new details are emerging about a brothel that police say was run by a private investigator at one of contra costa county's top cops. we have the documents detailing interviews with the madame who ran that massage parlor. we're hearing her story for the first time. >> we had really hoped this would have never seen the light of day. >> they are firing back tonight. after the release of documents detailing statements she made to investigators. >> i think she was used. i think she continues to be used. >> reporter: frederick reamer says his client, jordi sims, is a victim used by two powerful names in law enforcement to make extra money. sims told doj agents butler approached her with the idea of

opening a central massage parlor in pleasant hills. while welsh protected the business. warning sims of pending raids. >> he was in the position of warning them when and if there was going to be a decoy from the police visit that institution. >> reporter: sims told agents she and four other women who worked in the salon paid butler and welsh $500 a week. she said she alone earned anywhere from 100 to more than $1,000 a day. sims also claims welsh helped her beat a prior prostitution charge. she says he went to court with her and spoke with the prosecutor, getting the charges redu reduced. as thanks she claims she had a sexual encounter with wielsch. >> this was the top police officer in contra costa county. i breached, in my opinion, every possible obligation he had as a police officer. as a human being. >> reporter: reamer says sims is embarrassed and regretful. but he says it's wielsch and

butler who really crossed the line. >> this is a classic case of victimization of a female. especially one that was needy, especially one that had two kids to raise. >> reporter: he says sims is ready to tell all she knows in court. in contra costa county, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. wielsch has denied knowing anything about the brothel. his attorney claims he has toll the truth and now has nothing more to say. brobbers are seeking older gay men in the castro. >> i'm aware of what goes and comes. >> reporter: now the latest stories making their way through the areas bars have this man and others on edge. >> there's been trouble with older men or people, gay guysç picking up someone they don know, taking them home, getting robbed. >> reporter: police say similar scenarios unfolded several times in castro bars in the last few weeks. older gay men have reported going home with younger unknown men only to be robbed, beaten and possibly drugd. >> some of the victims said they felt, you no he, light-headed and they were dizzy and in a dreamy state. >> reporter: this sergeant who serves at the san francisco police department's lgbta liaison officer says older men are targets because they're often alone. >> someone seizes the moment and knows that older gay men that have had a couple drinks are vulnerable. they usually don't have somebody at home. it's an easy target. >> reporter: he says bars have posted signs warning people to

this is "today in the bay.." this morning we have new details on the soldier accused of gunning down 16 afghan civilians. he's now at a u.s. military prison in ft. leavenworth, kansas. robert bales arrived at the prison friday night. in a statement, army officials say that bales is being held in his own cell. meantime, neighbors in bales' home state of washington say they just cannot believe the man charged with murder is the same man that they know. >> i'm just waiting for something to come out to where it wasn't him that did it or there's more involved, because he was such a great guy, great family. >> bales is accused of going on a shooting rampage last sunday killing 16 afghan civilians, 96 them children. keeping with the tradition of the u.s. supreme court, it announced it will not allow video cameras to record the federal health care mandate hearing. they will allow an audio recording of arguments scheduled for later this month.

this is "today in the bay." an update on our storm coverage now. a tree that fell on to a menlo park house early this morning injured no one. we just got off the phone with the fire department and they tell us that a huge oak fell from a neighboring yard and landed on a duplex on loyola avenue. it went through the roof of the front unit and one of the residents says it sure gave him a shock. >> and it just was an amazing sound. the whole bedroom, the whole house was shaking and rocking and, you know, it was like a ten-car pileup. it was just going crazy. >> fortunately no one was injured when the tree fell on to the duplex. the people living in the front part of the duplex are staying away until the tree can be removed. that is something we've seen a lot of in the last round of rain, rob, you say the ground is

so saturated. >> it is. when you get trees like that and the winds get going, the branches and leaves will act like parachutes or drag it. it helps to pull the larger trees down, in some instances. unfortunate unfortunately, the ground got more saturated last night. we need the rain, just not all at once. that's the kind of week it's been. we've had a foot of rain in some of the santa cruz mountains midweek. we added another 3 1/2 inches of rain. once again, it was the north bay coastal hills and ma rinrin cou. santa cruz got half inch or a little bit more than that around san jose. we have fog in the north bay, showers approaching the coastline around the santa cruz mountains. for the afternoon, still a chance of seeing scattered showers, maybe a chance of thunder. the radar interesting which you'll notice, things have quieted san francisco northward. it's the south bay around areas of south of san jose over the santa cruz mountains as an area

of rotation will spin towards the central coast. i think for the first half of the day, areas south of san jose have the best chance of seeing some showers and as we go through the afternoon at the very chilly air aloft, that will help destabilize the atmosphere, we get the sunny breaks below, we'll have solar powered showers during the day. these will fire up around the hilltops. there is a slight chance of thunder. you can also notice towards mt. hamilton, snow falling with some of the showers. as we head into tonight, things backing off as the sun goes down. you can see over my shoulder, more moisture which will bring more widespread showers as we go into sunday. in the sierra, it's obviously snowing, this time more south of highway 50 down towards yosem e yosemite. highway 50 into yosemite, the central and southern sierra seeing a winter storm warning. mid to upper 50s around san
