i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist anthony slaughter. it seems like the rain is very patchy. >> the heavier rain earlier in the week will be a thing of the past as we head through this ek. even this week we're sitting to see some showers, especially in the south bay. that's where they are concentrated from san jose down towards santa cruz and we're hearing thunder in there. you may hear thunder throughout your day. even this morning, as i mentioned, it's chilly and breezy. temperatures in the 40s. 40 at napa and 4234 "saw iv" in san jose and 40 in gilroy. winds breezy, and even though we get into the 50s in the south bay, it will feel much cooler than that. 55 here in san jose and 52 in danville and 51 in alameda. as we head off towards san francisco, 52 there, and in the north bay you'll be in the mid-50s from napa to santa rosa and the winds will be the main story today. isolated thunderstorms, so we will see more dry time than wet time, as you mentioned, kris, so patchy rain.

we'll get you updated with the rest of the week's forecast coming up in just a bit. >> thanks very much, kanthony. new this morning, san jose police are look nothing a stabbing at a motel. officers got the call at the motel 8 on the alameda near the 880 after 1:00 this morning. there was a fight which then led to a stabbing. one person is injured, and we are waiting to hear more from police on that victim's condition. a morgan hill family is pleading for help in locating their missing teenager daughter. the girl was last seen on friday morning at 6:00 heading off to high school but the 15-year-old girl did not show up at high school. sierra lamar is 5'2" and is described as having a thin build with olive complexion and long dark hart. she was carrying a black and pink purse. authorities say she has no history of running away from home. anyone with information is asked to call the santa sclera's

police department. no one has seen martha gutierrez since tuesday when her son, an iraq war veteran, allegedly killed his 11-year-old sister and himself at family's home. before the murder-suicide detectiv detectives believe adel gutierrez shot his mother in the car. >> it's a tragedy for community, and i'm happy to see a lot of people came out. >> i just hope it's possible that she's okay, and if not, that someone out here finds her. >> according to the family, abel gutierrez was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. a lawyer for the sergeant of robert bales will spend several

hours with his client this weekend. bales has not yet been charged. if he is charged and convicted he could face the death penalty. bales was on his first tour in afghanistan at the time of the shootings but had done three other tours in iraq before that. >> he saw people killed literally standing right next to him, and there was an incident right before these allegations where one of his soldiers was mortally wounded. >> after years of war, it is unclear whether bales suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and whether that will be part of his defense strategy. new this morning, an american teacher was shot dead in southern yemen. nbc news reports that an american was hit when a gunman was shooting from the back of a motorcycle earlier today. the city has been a hot bend of violence. al qaeda has a strong presence in the country as well. here at home, sentencing day for sheriff ross mirkarimi.

tomorrow he'll learn his fate. the sheriff pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment last monday. he'll likely be fined $590 and sentenced to three years of probation and a year of anger management. prosecutors dropped counts of domestic violence, child endangerment and dissuading a witness. the sheriff was accused of bruising his wife during a fight on new year's eve. voters in puerto rico hit the polls for the republican primary today, and though puerto rico residents cannot vote in the general election, they do have 20 delegates whom they will award in their sunday republican primary. candidates mitt romney and rick santorum are campaigning elsewhere. romney is in illinois ahead of that primary on tuesday, and polls show he is slightly ahead of santorum in president obama's home state. santorum, on the other hand, is in louisiana where they will hold their primary on march 24th. a new version of the state's $98 billion high-speed rail

project could make legislators jump back on board. they are looking at using existing rail tracks to reduce rising costs while gaining state support. that would mean more than $1 billion improvement to the lines here in the bay area and down in l.a. billions of dollars in new track connecting the area through the north and central valley. the latest round of storms saturated the ground and that could be a reason that a giant oak fell on the peninsula. the big oak fell on a duplex in menlo park waking the people up inside. the impact shook the duplex hard, but remarkably no one was hurt. >> just was an amazing sound, the wloel bedroom and house was shaking and rocking. you know, it was like a ten-car pile-up. it was just going crazy, and the whole house start shaking. i was just holding on for dear

life. >> the family who lives in that front unit is, needless to say, going to be staying somewhere else until the tree is removed and the damage is repaired, but they are feeling very lucky. new york city police arrested several people overnight at the birthplace of the occupy movement. hundreds of protesters returned to zuccotti park near wall street. they were there to mark the six-month anniversary of the occupy movement. the protesters were arrested after police closed that park after 11:30 in the evening. officers say protesters also started to set up tents there. several occupy protesters fed up with what they say is inaction by the oakland police are now suing a motorist who allegedly hit them. the scene was last november in downtown oakland when a protester blocked a car while the occupy protesters crossed an intersection. one man hit the car's hood with his hands before the driver accelerated hitting him and another demonstrator. both suffered non-life-threatening injuries. the driver was questioned and eventually let go.

good morning to you. looking live at a very pretty picture of the bay bridge with the clouds there in the distance, but rain is going to stick around, though not as he have as we've seen. we'll get our forecast for the first day of spring from anthony slaughter in just a few minutes. when a fire destroyed a san jose apartment complex this week, a single mother lost nearly everything, but within 48

hours that mother found out that she is not alone. "today in the bay" shows you how social media is helping that family get back on their feet. >> seeing her 7-year-old excited, spending time with close friends on a saturday night, these are the moments that count the most for this single mother. >> it's okay. struggling with her 7-week-old baby noah in her armed the 31-year-old woman says how she lost her home thursday morning when a fire broke out at her west san jose apartment complex. >> me and my two children were sleeping. we woke up to smoke. natalie woke up and yelled fire. >> in all, 17 people were left without a home. the red cross has put them up in a hotel where they figure out where to go permanently. >> it's very hard because we don't have somewhere, only from the red cross. we only have that i.d. card, but it's very hard there.

>> but relief is also coming in from the social networking world. the woman posted these photos on her facebook page during the fire as the flames ate through the roof. here's noah's burned car seat. from these images grew the silver lining that has carried her through. an outpouring of support from her friends and even strangers. >> from there it was like, oh, i think i've got a car seat, oh, what else do they need? and it just like exploded. >> unfortunate that it takes a tragedy to bring people together, but i'm glad that everyone is helping out as much as they are. >> and even more considering -- >> the fire happened hon my birthday. >> she says the best gift has been the outreach and the promises to help as her young family struggles to move forward. >> it's got to go up from here, you know. that's -- it's got to. >> that's a good outlook. there was a fire fighter who was injured in that apartment fire blaze. he is still in the hospital this

it's not appropriate. >> come on, we can cuddle. >> come on, kris, it's cold outside. >> 'tis the season, right? this morning we're waking up to chilly numbers. in fact, many of us in the 40s right now hand that does not include the windchill. the winds very blustery this morning. definitely want to hold on to those sunday hats because some of our cooler readings up in napa, santa rosa, wouldn't be surprise federal some of the windchills are in the 30s, but you can see we still do have showers the area. yes this, haser been a very wet week and it continues this weekend. the good news, as i mentioned, dry time ahead in our future, but today will be another one of those days where we are tracking showers. in fact, can you see we're looking at thunderstorms down near santa cruz and even over into the hillsides towards morgan hill. town towards gilroy and santa cruz. the only spot looking at showers and thunderstorms. otherwise everybody else looking at patchy light shower and drizzle activity. 40 at napa and 44 san jose, san

mayato and san francisco at 44 as well. your we hadder headlines, well, we are expecting things to dry out. it's going to be a very gradual process though. today, isolated thunderstorms are possible, especially in the south bay, like we saw yesterday with some heavy downpours. those snow levels right around 2,500 feet. tonight we get a brief break. winds will continue to gust up to 35, 40 miles per hour, especially along the coast and the hill tops. monday, a brief shower is possible, but i do think we'll be looking at more dry time for tomorrow. it's all because of this big trough that's been in place all week long. can you see those clouds scooting along the coast. this area of low pressure is going to start to swing inland, and as it does it's going to bring showers to the area. just squeaking out with a little moisture and our snow levels will be right around 2,500 feet. now this trough is going to continue to make its way out of the region. you'll notice a broad area of high pressure starting to slide in. that area of high pressure will arrive later tomorrow, but, again this, system, it's scooting inland and eventually

it will keep those winds at least sustained up to about 35 to 45 miles per hour, but they should start to subside as we head through the day tomorrow. as i mentioned, some thunderstorms are possible today. small haleys especially in the south bay, and that's what we're expecting to be our main story today along with the winds. tomorrow, we are expecting more dry time. in fact, tomorrow's highs will be a little bit warmer than we're going to be today. many of us today will be in the 50s, tomorrow. looking at 60s that will make their appearance across the board. even san francisco a few degrees warmer for tomorrow. today again, numbers look a little cool. back to 55 here in san jose and 52 at the coast. san francisco, you'll be a little chilly today. hold on to your jackets all across the board. tomorrow, as i mentioned, do start to warm a little bit. more sunshine tomorrow, even this morning, kris. waking up to some sun and today the main stories are to keep the umbrella handy. may not need it, but there will be brief downpours so you'll

the 49ers are adding a super bowl hero to their team. the team agreed to terms on a two-year deal with free agent wide receiver mario manningham. the four-year pro was an instrumental part of the new york giants super bowl run, including a huge touchdown reception against the 49ers in the nfc championship game. it was a heartbreaker. he also made that amazing catch in the super bowl in the close being minutes of the giants win over the new england patriots. and "the san francisco chronicle" is considering changing another agent. he's wo--

the giants and the a's celebrated st. patty's day with a split squad exhibition in spring training and the a's were not the only ones wearing green. the giants wore green hats. tim lincecum pitched six innings, gave up one run on six hits. struck out four, and the giants offense had his back. ryan theroux and angel pagan and sandoval all hit homers. the giants win, it 7-2. both teams will be back on the field today. the giants will play the dodgers at 1:05. the a's will play the diamondbacks at 110:00. regular season starts in just a little less than three weeks. and the warriors are off until tomorrow when they host the timberwolves at 7:30. until then, they are probably going to be licking their wounds. they lost their third game in a row last night in overtime with the jazz. the jazz took control, outscoring the warriors 12-5 in the extra period.

return home. sierra lamar is 5'2" and is described as having a thin build with an olive complexion and long dark hair. lamar was last seen carrying a black and pink colored purse with the word juicy written on it. anyone with information is asked to call the santa clara county sheriff's department. in gill roy, friends and family of a missing mother say they will not stop searching for her until they find her. no one was seen martha gutierrez since tuesday when her son, an iraq war veteran, allegedly killed his 11-year-old sister and then himself at the family's home. before that murder-suicide, detectives believe 27-year-old abel guide res shot his mother in his car though they have not found her body. on saturday family, friends and other volunteers searched for any sign of her focusing on the route she took to and from work. >> it's a tragedy for the community, and, you know, i'm happy to see that a lot of people came out. >> just hope that if possible that she's okay, and -- and if

not that someone out here finds her. >> according to the family, abel gutierrez suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, and we're also learning more this morning about the u.s. army sergeant who is accused of killing 16 people, including children, in afghanistan. "today in the bay's" kimberly tere has the details on robert bales and shows how the community is reacting to what happened. >> neighbors of 30-year-old staff sergeant robert bales knew him as a doting family man. >> he was always happy, happy guy, full of life. i really wouldn't expect it. >> reporter: accused of killing 16 afghans, mostly women and children, bales is now at ft. leavenworth, the army's maximum security prison in kansas. bales enlisted in the army after 9/11. the decorated soldier served through tours in iraq. his attorney says bales never expected a fourth deployment, this time to afghanistan. >> he was told he would not be going back to the middle east.

he was training to be a military recruiter and then overnight he was told he was going back. >> reporter: bales attorney also implied he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. >> and he saw people killed literally standing right next to him, and there was an incident right before these allegations where one of his fellow soldiers was mortally wounded. >> though i believe he should be held accountable for his actions, this is a systemic problem, and i believe when you deploy people to a war, you know, three, four, five, six times, four times in his personal case, this is what we get, this violence will beget violence. >> in the east bay, people from a section in fremont known as little kabul gathered alongside u.s. military veterans calling for an end to the war and demanding justice for the victims' families. >> it's really inhuman behave i don't remember. >> it doesn't matter who you kill.

morning, and even overnight up to 30 or 40 miles per hour, so it's going to remain very breezy here on thi sunday and also t isolated thundstorms are going to be anotherhu isser today jus we are going to be looking at more dry time than wet time today, but one thing to make note of, you definitely want to keep that umbrella handyust because these showers are going to be pretty intense when they do happen. we're talking heavy downpours. in fact you can see, we're already seeing heavy downpours just west of santa cruz right now, and even earlier in san jose, some showers rolled through there and produced some thunder and even lightning. right now you'll notice most of that activity is concentrated in the south bay. the peninsula up towards san francisco just looking at mostly cloudy skies. peaks of sunshine earlier on the golden gate bridge. 40 in fairfield and 44 in san francisco and 14 as well here in san jose. your south bay forecast does keep the temperatures in the 50s today. again, isolated showers are possible, so we're not talking

about an all-day rain today. on an off and very hit and miss as far as the rain showers do go. the east bay you'll be mainly dry but the cool readings this morning with the temperatures near 40 degrees. we're back close to 57 later on, and up towards san francisco in the marina area, going to be cool and cloudy for the most part, just as we saw yesterday with cool numbers. 52 is what we were forecasted for that area. make sure you keep the umbrellas handy. don't think you'll need them all day long, but, again, a potential we could see a brief downpour and i think you'll be glad you had your umbrella, especially if you get caught in one of the downpours. looking at upcoming temperatures, chance of rain starts to diminish so it looks like you'll be able to enjoy the outdoors coming up a little bit later this week. >> thanks very much, anthony, see you in a bit. >> cleanup continues this morning in china as crews race to contain an oil spill. oil booms were placed around a cargo ship which ran across off the eastern part of the country last thursday. workers have also been trying to

and found that those consuming just one 12-ounce sugar-sweetened drink a day increase their chance of having a heart attack by 20%, two sugary drinks, a 42% inkoreans and three a day, 69%. >> it does cause a spike in blood sugar, and it causes a big burst of insulin. if we do this day after day, that's hanging around, not just a spike for a few hours >> reporter: american beverage association disagrees, and in response to the study said drinking sweetened beverages does not cause an increased risk of heart disease. adding these findings, quote, could have been the result of other life-style changes. another study looking at red meat consumption over 28 years found men and women who ate a serving a day with 13% more likely to die prematurely. the national cattleman's beef association says no one food has, quote, been shown to affect mortality, and the scientific evidence to support the role of lean beef in a healthy balanced

all right. welcome back this sunday morning you're taking a live look at the city of san francisco. some low clouds moving in from the marine layer but nonetheless we are waking up to some bright sunshine. it has been a while since we've seen some sunshine. good morning, i'm anthony slaughter in the nbc bay area weather center this morning, and we are tracking some showers. in fact, as you saw in san francisco, things are dry, but that's not the case in the south bay. in fact, some of the showers have produced some thunder and even some lightning this morning. even got a report from redwood estates. they have some sleet along with that rain, so if you live above about 2,000 feet, right around 2,000 feet, you may actually see a little bit of rain-snow mix today. otherwise everyone else is looking at rain and as immensed in the south bay, south of san jose, near santa cruz, looking at light shower activity. this stuff has been rolling right along the coast this morning, producing even a few rumbles of thunder, but as i mentioned in san francisco as you saw, it looking at dry

conditions there. it's 44 in san francisco right now. san mayato t matteo at 44 as we. snow levels are going to start to drop to 1,100 feet. live at 2,000 feet right at the cusp may actually see a little rain-snow mix. now tonight as this area of low pressure moves out of the area, we are going to start to see skies clear just momentarily. those winds will continue to gust, and then for tomorrow, as we move through the day, we're talking mainly dry conditions because this ridge is actually going to start to build in for tomorrow, but for today, again this area of low pressure, it's starting inland. it's going to bring some pretty intense storms to the central united states through this week, and as it moves out of this region the winds again following behind it because of the momentum with this system, going to continue to keep things breezy. cool as well. coastal areas will struggle to

get back into the lower 50s. some storms are possible. would i say from about san jose southward so if you live in the south bay, keep the umbrellas handy, even though we're not looking at widespread rain. the heating of the day, may see a few thunderstorms, and so that does mean you want to keep that umbrella handy. 54 at santa cruz. los gatos at 56 and san jose at 55. fairfield right around 55 degrees and pittsburgh at 54 this afternoon and towards wine country, santa rosa and napa around 56 and san francisco 52 degrees. expect to see those showers at least return into the pick tour as we head towards this upcoming week. today again spotty storms so not everybody will see the rain. tomorrow we're looking at a brief break as a warm front starts to slide into the picture and that means warmer temperatures as we head towards tuesday and wednesday. that will be the pick days of the week. tracking a few weak systems that will be sliding this way. not looking at a whole lot of rain, definitely not as much as
