>> welcome back to you. let's get a nice look at the bay bridge. smooth flow you are talking about. clear view now. fog may develop in many spots around the bay. that will be the issue as we update you throughout the morning. a smooth drive so far across the upper deck. getting into oakland, that side of the -- construction zone, may have an issue as you come off of the incline. we are also in berkeley are following this water main break at 7th and addison. 7th is closed from university avenue south of addison. that affects folks going north-south. connector is fine. we will monitor this. there was pavement damage, too. >> sounds good. 5:01 now. investigators this morning stepping up their search for 15-year-old sierra lamar. desperate for any clues that her mother makes another emotional plea for her daughter's return. bob redell is live in morgan

hill with what we know so far. good morning. >> reporter: yeah. good morning. even at this early hour, we are still -- still dark out, we saw a deputy canvassing the neighborhood where lamar lives. the sixth day since sierra lamar failed to catch her school bus at the sbeshgs down the street from her home, the sheriff's office has been interviewing their classmates. while her family has been praying for her safe return. >> if you can hear me, how much i love you and want you back. i want you back. i love you and i just want you back. >> that was sierra's mother, marlene, at a candlelight vigil held last night. a large crowd of her friends and people from the community gathered to offer their support. sierra is is a years old and last seen at 6:00 friday morning

and supposed to be headed to school where she is a sophomore. for whatever reason, she never made it there. >> we are not going to give up until she comes home. i just -- things aren't the same without her. >> you have on get home before saturday because you have a hair appointment. we can't wait for you to come home, sierra, we love you. >> the sheriff's department tells us that steve lamar, sierra's biological father is a registered sex offender but is not a person of interest. that he has been cooperating fully with the investigation. and into his daughter's disappearance. investigators don't know if she was abducted or ran away. her family said that there were no problems at home. and adding to their concern is the fact that her cell phone was found abandon order the side of a road not far from her home here. less than a mile away. reporting live here in morgan

hill, bob redell. >> gilroy police are looking for help in finding a woman missing since a murder/suicide in her home. investigators believe gutierrez, iraq war veteran, shot his mother last week before killing his 11-year-old sister and himself. they say evidence found inside his car and outside the home indicate a violent struggle and gunfire. several searches failed to turn up the mother's body. a longtime prosecutor accused of sexual assault now taking an east bay county to court. the deputy district attorney will file suit against contra costa county and martinez police today. he says they maliciously investigated and prosecuted him after he was accused of assault. he was accused of raping a former co-worker back in 2008. those charges were dropped.

he's currently on paid administration i have leave. oakland will honor four police officers that lost their lives in one of the city's darkest days. the keller avenue bridge will be dedicated to sergeant mark, irvin roman, daniel and officer john hegey. they died during a shoot-out with a cornered fugitive. mixon was also killed. the search continues for a san francisco man who just disappeared in death valley national park. 67-year-old george kohler vanished march 12 during a cycling trip. witnesses say that they last saw him heading back to his tent at the mesquite springs campground. the campground is about 180 miles northwest of las vegas. his tent and bicycle were both at the campground the next morning but he was nowhere to be found. search crews still searching death valley for kohler with the help of dogs and aircraft from a

nearby airport base. 5:05. the suspect wanted in a deadly shooting in france surrounded by police right now in a stand-off. marla tellez has the latest. >> reporter: they are talking to police negotiators and say he plans to surrender. exactly when is not known. the stand-off started early this morning when heavily armed officers raided the home. it was within a few miles of the jewish school where the suspect is accused of gunning down three students and a arey. officials say that he's a 24-year-old frenchman of algerian descent. he wants revenge for palestinian children killed in the middle east. at one point gun fair erupted during the stand-off. officials say three officers were hurt. to the north and paris, police on high alert after a package explodes at the indonesian embassy.

police say that an employee discovered the suspicious package and stepped back just in time before the bomb exploded. the blast broke windows but did not hurt that worker. this morning we are getting a feel for yesterday's 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit central and southern mexico. this amateur video here capturing the moment the quake hit at this office building in mexico city. the epicenter was 200 southeast of here. plenty of people waking up outside this morning because their home is simply not inhabitable. about 800 homes in all damaged. hard to believe no reports of any deaths. taking a hit from budget cuts. focus of a meeting tonight on cuts in social programs in alameda county. the realignment of state funded programs to county responsibility is straining finances. supervisor chance sae ooe ooe o

not be able to make up the difference. tonight's budget hearing starts at 6:00 at the alameda boys and girls club in alameda. the city will weigh in today on the fight to keep historic san francisco bar open. city preservation commission will hold a final vote on landmark status for the gold dust lounge. the vote is a formality. last week the commission decided to borrow which -- operating more than 100 years does not meet the criteria. the owners of the bar are trying several tactics to keep the business, including suing the landlord for discrimination. right now their lease is up and have been told to get out and make way for new tenants. we can tell threw is a new push for a statewide ban on plastic bags. berkeley city leaders and activists right now calling for legislation that would ban single use plastic bags at businesses statewide. the group planning a news conference today to call on law makers to create this legislation. more than 20 california counties

after the markets took a breather tuesday. stocks fell on fresh concerns about a slowdown in china's economy. china raised fuel price it is second time in less than six weeks and chinese demand for iron could flatten out this year. investors took note of a drop in new home construction last month. we are going to get more housing data. we saw the dow fall 68 points. the nasdaq losing four. meantime hair salons are the new economic indicator. quite interesting. industry has seen an uptick in business and sales driving more than 5% in the past two years. after cutting back on household expenses during the recession data is showing that americans may be visiting the salon more often and opting for more expensive treatments. "u.s. news & world report" named hairdresser as the top job in 2012. forecasting 13% growth by the end of the decade. looks like we are in the wrong business. president obama kicked off his tour today to promote the energy

principals who were demoted. the school board members decided to remove 7 principals earlier this month because of poor student performance. several top administrators also lost some of their duties. parents upset they were not told about the decision. they will attend tonight's school board meeting in protest, hayward city hall. stay classy, bay area. north bay merchants are complaining about who is showing up at the annual wine road barrel tasting. young drinkers are turning up to the event and turning it into a pratt party. during a city council meeting last night, merchants complained they saw participants staggering around town and getting sick in the streets earlier this month. they want the tradition to continue but to say new regulations need to be put in place p so participants act responsibly. >> note to self, wine tasting not a good place for a toga party. almost as large as the empire state building.

sheriff insists he is not going anywhere. christine smith is live. >> reporter: good morning. lot of developments in this story. mayor ed lee is expected to file the official paperwork today to suspend ross mirkarimi from his duties as sheriff. he had asked him to resign. that didn't happen. so the next step is that there will be an etc.ition probe in this situation after mirkarimi pleaded guilty last week to misdemeanor charges of false imprisonment for an incident involving his wife on new year's eve day. lee said mirkarimi's actions fell below the highest leelt and ethical standards for elected officials. before lee's announcement, very defiant mirkarimi spoke out, too, saying he doesn't believe there really was official misconduct and is digging in for a fight. >> i believe that i am still very able to be the sheriff of

san francisco. and that at this time i do not plan to resign. >> reporter: lee appointed vickie hennessy as the interim sheriff and served as deputy chief in the sharive's department before. and she has 35 years experience. he has a lot of confidence in her and as for mirkarimi he says he is not hiding from this. he says he wants a chance finally to they his side of the story. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith. >> the question remains what is next? if ed lee files official misconduct charges it will be sent to the ethics commission. the commission will make a recommendation to the board of supervisors. that could happen as early as next week. nine of the 11 supervisors must vote to remove sheriff mirkarimi in order for him to lose his job. 5 kwlon 34. authorities are looking for a suspected thief who they say tried to run down a san mateo county sheriff's deputy. investigators say that this man

is responsible for a series of locker break-ins at the fitness club. it is on alpine road west of 280. a sheriff's deputy had to jump out of the way yesterday as the man sped away from the club. driving a tan or salmon colored four-door nissan maxima or toyota camry. a family waking up for a fifth straight day with no idea where their daughter is. 15-year-old sierra lamar disappeared friday on her way to school. bob redell is live in morgan hill this morning with what we know so far. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, john. sierra lamar was supposed to catch a school bus at this intersection friday morning. where you can see now her mother has posted a missing -- person for her. investigators now trying to find out why she never made it that ride to the school where the 15-year-old is a sophomore. her family doesn't believe she ran away because they say there were no problems at home. and what is concern sing that

today in the bay. >> one of the last patches of oakland land in san jose is being zoned for a mega-retail center. 45 acres of land on the northeast corner of highway 85 is rezoned for commercial use. city council approved that project in the 7-1 vote last night. mayor reid said the new retail center will help boost retail sales, tax receive may in the city. critics of the project have their concerns retail center would have a negative effect on traffic and the quality of life. here is warning. san francisco drivers should avoid the embarcadero this morning if they can. part of that northbound lane between mission and howard street will be closed. crews will be out repairing that sewer line there and at this point there is no word on when the lane will reopen. what we are in store today as far as the forecast. christina loren. >> we are going to see a springlike day. temperatures in 70s in close cities. close to it just about everywhere else inland.

president after big win in illinois. the going is getting tough for santorum as the campaign moves north. what do you think? >> it is. illinois was a real proving ground for mitt romney. he was supposed to prove whether or not he could win big in a midwest state. you saw the narrow victories in michigan and ohio. last tonight he won by double digits after outspending santorum 7-1. 47% of the vote. the exit polls showed people who were very conservative went for santorum and those that were most concerned about the economy and beating president obama went for romney. as we see in another state. what's this mean for rick santorum? he ended up in second place which he said was good. he focused on the fact he won conservative and focused on that going into louisiana. and as well hoping to take that southern state as he did with mississippi and alabama. he's also focusing on the gop convention. you know the delegates count may
