>> good morning, everyone, the time now is just before 4:31. i'm john kelly. >> lots to get to this morning. as promised, let's check that forecast with christina. >> good morning to you. it's one of those mornings where we don't have that much rain on the radar, but you're going to encounter drizzle and mist out your front door. thick, low clouds out there. give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination safely. the good news is, we're going to see another gorgeous spring-like afternoon. i'll take you through that forecast and we'll talk about a strong storm on the way for the weekend. mike has an area that could slow you down in the east bay. >> we're looking at highway 4. this is too early to show most of the congestion for the commute, but we're looking at one accident. this is pittsburg. blocking two lanes, but the real slowdown isn't here. look further east past summersville, there's that

closure, the crews should be picking up right now. but i'm still waiting for confirmation. they're not moving just yet, guys. we'll follow this as well as a couple other spots to tell you about coming up. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. it is now day six in the desperate search for sierra lamar. >> she's a 15-year-old south bay girl who vanished on her way to school. live where sierra's family is becoming more worried every day as every hour passes no doubt. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you. and the santa clara county sheriff's office still trying to figure out why sierra lamar never made it here to her school bus stop this past friday. people who love the 15-year-old girl are hoping to find that answer in prayer. last night it was another prayer vigil. this one in fremont where sierra lived with her father before moving to morgan hill last fall to live here with her mother. marlene lamar made a plea last night to those gathered at the vigil and to property owners in

morgan hill, please search your land, especially those posted with no trespassing signs to see if anything turns up. the only item that the investigators say has turned up so far is sierra's cell phone found alongside a road down the home here in morgan hill where she lives with her mother. the sheriff's office saying now, unfortunately, that cell phone along with her computer have not revealed any information about her whereabouts. now, in another development, sierra's father steve lamar, he released a statement yesterday after it became known that he is a registered sex offender. and this is what he said. i ask you please not shift the focus away from the investigation and finding sierra. i also ask you please not let my past shape your opinion of sierra or anyone in our family. please understand, i'm a dad and i want nothing more than to find my missing daughter. investigators did say that he is not a person of interest. and that he has been fully

cooperative with the investigation. and into the disappearance of sierra lamar, his daughter. it is 4:33 right now. and today, san francisco's embattled sheriff reports for his first day of violence intervention classes. ross mirkarimi must pass the year-long course. in the meantime, ed lee has suspended mirkarimi as sheriff and has filed paperwork to remove him permanently for official misconduct. vikki hensy was sworn in as interim sheriff. police say the couple's bodies were discovered yesterday afternoon by their teenager daughter. at this point, it is unclear if the daughter was actually inside the home when the shootings happened. >> we're going to investigate it as a homicide and we're going to look at everything. but i've been told by investigators that it's looking like a murder/suicide.

>> investigators at this point tell us there's no record of any kind of trouble at home. the daughter is now staying with family. and the man accused of beating a berkeley hills man to death will be in court today. 23-year-old danielle dewitt will attend a competency hearing this morning. he's accused of killing a man with a pot last week. officers did not respond immediately because they were monitoring an occupy protest. just minutes later, sucor's wife called 911 to report her husband had been attacked. 4:35 right now, caltrans will start work today to make a dangerous section of highway 17 safer. caltrans will be working at laurel curve this morning to install a temporary center divide. last friday a man died during a head-on crash. he lost control of his car and hit an suv.

the work should be completed in a couple of days weather permitting. thieves are making off with curb-side donations in santa clara. the organization continues to take phone calls from donors. south of 101 has also been the target of thieves. the processing center has experienced several break-ins recently and someone stole surveillance cameras installed to deter that theft. a woman awarded $22 million in damages in a medical malpractice lawsuit against the palo alto medical foundation. she says she went to her doctor for treatment of migraines back in 2006, they ordered a procedure injecting dye into a vein in her brain. her attorneys say the procedure was unnecessary and left her paralyzed from the neck down. >> she trusted her doctor and she was doing it because the

doctor recommended this. >> the money will help franco pay for her care. long lines this morning in the east bay as people show up for free health care. "today in the bay's" christie smith where doctors and dentists will be offering check-ups. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. as there are hundreds of people out here at the o.co coliseum parking lot, some have tents, sleeping bags, and stadium chairs. one man has handed out 415 tickets so far. that's where they're giving this out. organizing tickets for service. he tells me that the gate opened up here at midnight, but people lined up well before that. this is that four-day clinic for dental care, eye exam, glasses. all free by a group called remote area medical. they go around the country putting on these clinics. it's all volunteer, this is for adults and kids. and patients are seen on a first come, first serve basis. i spoke with one woman in line who says she brought two church

groups from oakland out here this morning and so she needs help too. she got here about 3:00 this morning. >> i don't know what it would do. that's not good for me. that's not -- i'm very appreciative of what's happening right now. >> they do dental cleanings, fillings, extraction, even acupuncture and chiropractic. this is meant for people who don't have medical insurance, are unemployed, or otherwise can't pay for their health care. now, what's going to happen is at 5:00 this morning, they're going to open up the gates, and the clinic actually opens at 5:30 this morning. and i mentioned we're at number 415, and what they're saying is again, this is four days, but each day they're going to hand out only 1,000 tickets. they're saying it's best to get here early. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> a lot of people already out there. >> very important for that health. let's see what it's like out

there. christina says not too bad of a first start of the day. >> not too bad, not too frigid. and we had a front come through, fell apart on the way through the bay area. as a result, though, that front moving onshore, we have a stronger onshore flow. fog will be a factor this morning. your temperatures are in the 50s, no need for that heavy winter coat and i think at about 9:00 a.m., we can go ahead and forget that umbrella, as well. we're going to lose that window for chances of rain at about 9:00. and then we'll see decreasing clouds throughout the remainder of the day. a really nice second half of your thursday. friday eve, good-looking friday, as well. and another stronger storm on the way as we head into the weekend. day part forecast tells the story. by noon, 55 degrees, inland, comfortable, even at noon today, 60s in many cities across the bay. but the big story is the decreasing clouds, mostly cloudy start by noon today, mostly sunny conditions with a light breeze.

we'll help you get outdoors this weekend anyhow with the rain in the forecast. first, let's check your drive. >> we'll take you out to 680, an accident southbound side at the sycamore valley offramp that looks like it's cleared the road completely. maybe flashing lights for the next few minutes. we're looking at no slowing for 680 itself, the construction zone, not an issue between canyon road. no lanes closed, similar situation for 580 westbound, 13-minute drive out of the altamont pass. 880, both directions will have construction between 237 and 101. the southbound side of big note, just over 237, you go down to about one lane as you're passing by the expressway. those crews in place for another hour there. and northbound 87, there's construction going on for another 20 minutes or so.

police went into the apartment where he was hiding. they found him in the bathroom and the shootout began. he fell from the window to the ground below. he was pronounced dead at the scene. he admitted to killing three children and a rabbi at a jewish school in the city on monday. as well as the shooting death of three paratroopers to avenge a death, he says of palestinian children. federal prosecutors in brazil are going after chevron foreign oil. prosecutors filed criminal charges against 17 chevron and transocean executives accusing them of environmental crimes. at least 110,000 gallons of oil seeped through cracks in an underwater chevron well last november. the well has since been sealed. those named in the suit call the charges outrageous. well, oil in the u.s. is a very hot topic on that campaign trail as president obama continues his two-day tour to promote his energy plan. for more on that, and the rest of your news before the morning bell, we turn to jackie

deangelos. good morning, jackie. >> good morning to you. president obama will continue to defend his energy policies today deep in the heart of the oil sector. he's speaking in cushing, oklahoma. he's speaking about plans to expedite permits to build the controversial leg of the pipeline. meantime, futures are lower after a mixed session on wall street on wednesday. there's some fresh concerns about the global economy today as data's showing manufacturing activity is slowing in parts of europe and china. asian markets were mixed overnight, europe is in the red, as well, and we'll get more data in the u.s. this morning on unemployment and fedex numbers that just reported a short while ago. in the meantime, the dow dropped 45 points to 13,124, the nasdaq up one point to 3,075. and zinga adding more gains

from summersville, the onramps have -- the off-ramps have cleared but we're looking for the construction itself to be cleared. we'll look over to 880, a smooth drive past high street in the northbound direction, southbound side, crews there for another 5 to 15 minutes, we'll see as they get their way on the roadway, but no slowing and no problems, guys. back to you. this concern, background checks are going too far as employers start asking potential workers for their social media passwords and their log-ins. it's grown fastest in the public sector, especially for law enforcement. but now getting traction among private employers. the executive director of the civil liberties union calling the practice dangerous. >> it's just -- i think wrong. for employers or perspective employers to think that they have a window ought to have a window into all aspects of your life. >> they are in the driver's seat right now.
