meteorologist rob mayeda, we can expect that no matter where we live. >> lots of seattle sunshine. it is overcast and now we are starting to see more steady rain reaching the coast there in the north bay. you just saw it over san francisco. a lighter rain to start. we may see more moderate rain near midday. in the santa clara valley, relatively dry. note the moisture coming up from the south. it will be a front that kind of stalls out over the bay area today, which means it will be kind of in and out of the moderate rain at times. hour by hour, nothing too heavy showing up, though the santa cruz mountains could see two to three inches of rain between there and tomorrow morning. notice the trend going into sunday changing to more scattered showers. planning your day today, keep the jacket on all day long with highs clearly having a tough time getting out of the mid-50s, 40s to low 50s. we'll talk about how much rain is in the forecast as we take a look at your sunday and the week ahead. there are more chances of rain

showing up in the seven-day. we'll look at that in a couple minutes. thank you, rob. rain or shine, the search for sierra lamar will continue as questions mount about the few clues investigators have to work with so far. teenagers, friends and family say they will do what they can today having gather for the sport at a candlelight vigil in fremont last night. that's the school that she sierra attended as a freshman last year before move ing . here's more on the search for the 15 yield girl. >> reporter: an outpouring of emotion held here since sierra lamar's disappearance. the 15-year-old was last seen leaving her morgan hill home headed for school. the vigil was at washington high where sierra went to school before moving to morgan hill in october. >> we are all just hoping she comes home soon. i know time is an issue, but i feel like, i have a feeling she's going to come back.

>> it looks like she was taken, but, i mean, the clothes in the bag, that means it seem like she was packing to go somewhere, which i hope they were packing to go somewhere, but you never know. >> it would have been between 7:00 and 7:30. >> reporter: fbi agents set up a checkpoint close to where lamar goes to school. they pulled over motorists asking them to see if they saw anything unusual. the fbi teamed with santa clara county investigators to meticulously search lamar's backyard as other crews combed the neighbor's property. for the second day agents we want into the family home with heavy equipment. >> i try not to think bad things. >> reporter: lamar's mother believes the clothes found folded neatly inside her daughter's purse discovered in a nearby field are, in fact, the same ones she had on when she left last friday morning. her mother posted a picture of herself in the sharks jersey shortly after leaving the house. >> i've been racking my brain 24

hours, i've been having a hard time sleeping because i keep thinking i'm going to remember something that's going to be a blue. >> reporter: marlene lamar is trying to stay positive, but as the hours tick by, her frustration and confusion over what happened to her daughter intensifies. kimberly terry, today in the bay. sierra lamar's family is getting support from a young woman who understands their agony. 12 years ago missy sanchez was kidnapped and after two days in captivity the 8-year-old girl managed to escape. >> at lo of kids do get to come back home. and it could be her. you know, it is not too often, but whose to say that she can't do it. >> sanchez was kidnapped in vallejo and escaped from her captor in santa clar she's now 19 years old and her kidnapper died in jail. the santa clara county sheriff's department set up a special mailbox for tips in the disappearance of sierra lamar. the web address is here and

detectives set up a special e-mail address we put on nbcbayarea.com. two men are in the hospital this morning after a huge brawl at a napa county golf course overnight. sheriff's deputies responded to the chardonnay golf club at 11:00 last night when a private party got out of hand in the parking lot. deputies say several fights broke out and two men were stabbed. they were taken to the hospital. deputies say there were at least 00 people at the party, 300. they have interviewed witnesses but say no arrests so far. police in san leandro are investigating a rather strange case this morning. a woman was found stabbed to death in the driver seat of a car that was parked on beth avenue near pershing drive. police found the woman slumped over in the driver seat with stab wounds yesterday morning. police say the woman is in her early 20s. it appears she was targeted, though police have not identified a motive. friends paid tribute last night to a san francisco family

found dead inside their home. the family of 5 was found dead yesterday morning. police say three asian men or rather three asian women and two asian men were found inside the home on house street across from city college. some of them had been shot. neighbors say they heard something shot the night before. >> just basically some very angry,age traited,age traited, i don't know that it was actually english, but it sounded like a muffled older person. >> last night a group of men arrived at that home to perform a chinese ritual for the dead. they burned incense and paper money. police have not said whether the deaths were a result of a murder-suicide but do say they are not looking for suspects. another twist in a high-profile murder-for-hire case in the south bay. paul garcia was convicted of murder in the 2008 death of restaurant owner mark akilli. they are asking that the

presiding judge be disqualified from the case claiming he was biased. the judge read a declaration from garcia's original lawyer including secrets about garcia. another judge would have to azbree to replace him in order for the motion to move forward. another hearing is set for next month. a peninsula senator will join in the search for a missing rock climber. senator leland ye and a group of marines will try to find 27-year-old joseph mchenry this morning. mchenry was last seen on march 5th at his home in san bruno. he disacleared while rock climbing on a pacifica beach. the search starts at 8:00 this morning. searchers will meet at maury point in pacifica. u.y. berkeley police would have been justified in using pepper spray to break up a group of occupy cal protesters according to a new report. they were criticized for breaking up the protesters with

pepper spray back in november. a police chief was called in to review the actions of that day. in a report released yesterday, he said police acted properly and suggested that officers should have used more force, including pepper spray to break up the crowd. the officer says he knows the report will be controversial, but he also says he stands by his findings. the americas cup race in san francisco has hit some rather choppy waters. organizers are downsizing before the races even begin. organizers announced yesterday they are finalizing an agreement with the city of san francisco to lead to organizational changes and staff reductions. the reductions will impact 14 people in san francisco and another 14 staffers at other officers around the world. the major shakeup is because of the unexpected reduction in the size of next year's event. nbc is the official broadcast partner of the americas cup competition. the giants had a rough go last night at buster posey gave fans a square.

and looking live at the golden gate bridge, you can see some of the rain rob has been talking about. the rain that will follow us all around the bay area regardless of where we go on our errands today. two years ago this week president barack obama signed the health care reform bill into law and ever since most republican lawmakers have been trying to appeal it. in louisiana presidential candidate mitt romney called health care reform the centerpiece of a failed ft. presidency. he blasted the bill as an attack on personal freedom and free market and outlined his own approach to health care reform. >> i'd like instead of having the government come in and mandate price and cost controls, i would like to have individuals have a greater incentive to shop around. and to make this act more like a market. >> opponents are scheduled to argue the constitutionality of the law before the supreme court next week. meanwhile, the white house released a statement in its defense saying it has made a difference for millions of americans and that over time it

will help get even working class and middle-class families the security they deserve. outrage continues to spread across the country over the death of an unarmed teenager in florida. in philadelphia protesters marched about 15 blocks through downtown. they were protesting the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin who was killed last month walking near his home in sanford, florida. the man who killed him, a neighborhood watch commander, says it was self-defense. some demonstrators think race was at the heart of the shooting. so far the shooter, george zimmerman, has not been charged. and in south beach, some of the players for the miami heat voiced their support at last night's nba game in detroit. lebron james, dwyane wade and other players wrote messages of support on their sneakers. wade also had this to say. >> all of us being fathers, all of us family men, putting yourself in that position, man, you can't sleep. it hurts.

looking live at one of the live pictures in san francisco. you can see a very gray start to the morning. and it is wet in san francisco. windy in the south bay. and everybody is going to get a taste of that today, right, rob? >> yeah, we are watching the rain really starting to push

across the coast right now. you saw san francisco and san rafael earlier, and yes, it is breeze zpi outside. so the first weekend of springs the not going to feel like it near the bay area. look at the numbers in the 40s for the north. that's a chilly rain coming down. and it is breezy. some of the hills in the east bay, fremont and pleasanton, the winds are 15 to 20 miles per hour this morning. the wind is part of the story and rain is moving in throughout the rest of the morning. in terms of the rainfall totals, this is a mainly light to moderately steady rain. so for the places on the coast, we could see maybe one to three inches of rain coming down, especially near the santa cruz mountains. the inland spots are a lot less as the rain gets hung up near the coastal rain. sure enough into marin county over to napa county, now starting to see the light to moderate rain coming on in. up and down the peninsula into parts of redwood city, you're seeing a little bit of light rain there. as you make the right over

highway 17 kind of stopping at the summit there, that's where the radar is located there up in the santa cruz mountains. you can see the rain down to santa cruz and over towards san jose. not much happening yet, but you can see how this is kind of coming in from south to north. so it is not a west to east type of system, but the upper level winds parallel to the front below, which is doing -- it is slowing things down and hitting the brakes as it hits the bay area today. we'll see the rain slowly moving through. then eventually getting towards sunday, we'll see the main low kick through southern california leading to some dryer conditions, but hour by hour today we are stuck with the rain. cool conditions, changing over to scattered showers tomorrow, maybe a chance of a thundershower with the cool air moving in. late saturday and sunday evening things dry out with the low moving to the east. heading to the high country today, it's windy but the second half of the weekend on sunday is when we'll see the snow fly. the snow level is pretty close to 5,000 feet for this weekend. the bay area temperatures today are looking cool, be in the

mid-50s near san jose. low-50s to the north. the trivalley has been windy this morning. the rain will creep in later mid-morning near san ramon. and for the coast, you have the rain that will stick around for a while. you'll see it all day long today. so breezy with rain today. scattered showers for your sunday. turning a bit dryer toward the evening, monday we catch a break. tuesday and wednesday we are stuck in this pattern, but i think it looks like more heavy rain for the north bay. just a cool start to spring this weekend. >> if you were planning spring cleaning -- >> indoors in the garage today. >> thank you, rob. wall street couldn't keep the momentum going this week closing lower every day. here's our business headline this is week. >> reporter: it was a rough week in the markets with stocks posting the biggest losses since mid-december. concerns out of weak manufacturing data out of china

and europe and fears about decline i declining amounts of oil were in the news. a realtors group says existing home sales in january and february combined were the best in five years. bank of america customers can give up the deeds to their homes but can stay in their foreclosures by giving their name to the bank. federal agency has to back track the disputing pipeline to bring this from canada to the refineries in new mexico. apple shares topped $600 a piece this week after the company announced it was $300. it is called pink slime, a filler made from fatty left-over

you may have already seen "the hunger games" on the big screen, but here's a rare behind-the-scenes look. michelle boden takes us to a rural mill town in north carolina where many of the key scenes were shot. >> reporter: this has to be the perfect place for a 12-year-old boy who needs exploration. ben beaver, the siblings and cousins are on spring break -- >> i thought, how cool would it be on the way home to stop. >> reporter: how cool to see where key scenes from "the hunger games" movie were shot.

today. thank you so much for joining us this morning. i'm kris sanchez along with meteorologist rob mayeda. your map is very blue this morning, which is cold, and it is starting to change. >> it is turning greener. it is going green this morning. >> my two favorite colors this morning. >> well, she's going to like it during the day, too. you'll be seeing the system hitting the brakes over the bay area. now that it is reaching the north bay in san francisco, south san francisco down over to san mateo, we are looking at light to moderate rain coming down as it hits the coastal hilltops coming out of the south like that. we'll see higher totals on the ocean facing size. down near the santa cruz mountains, it will be a cool day today with temperatures in the low to mid-50s. at highs in the low to mid-50s with light and steady rain, not moderate at times, but we could see a chance for a little thunter here in this first weekend of spring. we'll talk about those that i

think changes coming up in a bit. oakland police are investigating two homicides this morning. around 10:00 last night on church street officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. that man later died at the hospital. then just before 2:00 this morning a man and a woman were shot on 60th street in north oakland. the man died at the scene. the woman was taken to the hospital in serious condition. san francisco police are trying to get to the bottom of a strange case involving a family of five found dead inside a home. police have not said if this is a murder-suicide but tell us they are not looking for any spot suspects. i have more now with this story. >> reporter: a woman, believed to be a family member, came inside the home to find three of her relatives dead. one in the doorway and two others in the garage. she called police and within

minutes officers were there checking the rest of the house. >> i found two more additional adult females toe deceased. >> reporter: mary lemieux lives across the street and didn't hear gunshots but at midnight heard the angry voice of a man. >> who was just basically sounding like an angry, agitate ed older person. >> reporter: the victims include three asian women and two men. one of the victims suffered gunshot wounds, and although the others do not count as a homicide, they believe nobody else is involved. >> at this investigation, the san francisco chronicle reports

the female owner of the house works at a software engineer at the medical systems in emeryville. neighbors described her and other family members as cordial and distant. >> i have seen them working on the house for a year now. you know, my mom can see their backyard from their backyard. there's always been hello interagss. interactions. >> this is a terrible tragedy as we fairly investigate this incident. i exebb extend our support to the families and friends involved in this crime. the search for a missing morgan hill teenager is in its second week as parents continue to hope she'll come home soon. that's where lamar attended school last year before her move to morgan hill.

they were talking to the hospital. there were 300 people at the party. they are interviewing some of them but so far made no arrests. a youth soccer coach who is also a silicon valley engineer is behind bars accused of having sex with a 13-year-old. emanuele fabrizio was arrested on wednesday after complaints from a girl's father. according to his twitter and facebook pages, fabrizio is an engineer at paypal. his bail is set at $1 million. parents in daly city are fighting back trying to track down a suspicious man taking photographs of girls inside an elementary school bathroom. parents whose children go to george washington middle school are passing out flyers that include this stretch. the man entered the bathroom

and looking live at the embarcadero this morning. it is quite chilly to start this morning. it will stay that way throughout most of the day. the pope is visiting south of the border this morning. pope benedict arrived in mexico for his first trip to the world's second most catholic country. it's the beginning of the pilgrimage in which he calls on mexicans to concur the idolatry of money. he will also travel to cuba on monday. president barack obama is on his way to south korea this morning. the president's first stop will be at the demilitarized zone separating north and south korea. later he'll join 50 other leaders for the international summit on protecting nuclear materials. all is well with the international space station this

and let's take a look outside right now. you can see san jose, we are just seeing a few sprinkles, clouds, relatively dry right now. but to the north, it's a different story. that's where the moderate rain is coming down across the golden gate bridge. and it has moved over towards

the east bay near oakland right now. we are starting to see the rain come on in. today it will be a slow-moving system to keep our temperatures down, not warming up much more than we are outside, at least for the south bay. we'll see temperatures later on in the mid-50s. 51 right now in san jose with temperatures and the light rain falling. san francisco to the north way bay, really quite chilly. breezy near the north topsment and in the north bay the wind will throttle back a bit towards the afternoon. right now the rain is starting to make progression across the bay area now starting to reach parts of the east bay. 880 there earlier near oakland over to the north bay, san rafael, same thing. herer in this area you'll see light to moderate rain for san jose. they are missing out with the air pushing in from the south hitting the santa cruz mountains. the santa cruz mountains could pick up two to three inches of rain today. but into the south bay we'll see

less until the winds start to shift later this afternoon. the front will start to make its way through the bay area right around lunchtime today and then just kind of hold its position. what's happening here is the front is stalling with the upper level winds running parallel to the front that tend to put on the brakes for these types of systems. a slow-moving system. a chilly day today changing over to scattered showers with some of the unsettled air working through for sunday. we may have a chance of thunder to wrap up the weekend, but things trending dryer late sunday afternoon heading into sunday evening. so futurecast is picking up the rain pretty good except for the south bay. we are seeing a rain shadow thanks to the santa cruz mountains. during the day, periods of light to moderate rain. the heaviest tolls near the santa cruz mountains. going into the evening, rain backing off a bit and coming back in for sunday morning. notice the progression going into sunday evening. things are starting to dry out as the low finally scoots out through southern california and we dry out heading towards

monday. today's temperatures near the bay area here in the first weekend of spring, cool. we'll call for the mid-50s today, but i wouldn't be surprised that the upper 40s to low 50s are more like it with the cloud and the light rain falling. just not going to warm up a lot today. so it will be certainly jacket weather throughout the day. and you'll keep the umbrella on standby. today, breezy with the rain. tomorrow, a rainy start and then changing to scattered showers. and if the cool air higher up could see snow near mount hamilton with a chance of thunder or two. things calm down monday. tuesday into wednesday, that system looks to pack more rain, especially for the north bay midweek and another one drops in friday into saturday. so it's spring, but we keep springing back and forth with the storms. >> you are optimistic with your yellow tie bringing in a ray of sunlight. well, the giants had a rough-go last night. buster posey gave fans a square. he was back behind home plate last night after that hard hit

and this morning immigration protests continue in arizona where hundreds of students marched in protest of the state's controversial immigration policy. the high school edge college students aimed anger at maricopa sheriff joe apiro. they say he's targeting against illegal immigration. the march ended with a rally in front of the sheriff's office. the protest was peaceful with no arrests reported. people in kentucky are assessing damage caused by a massive tornado there. the national weather service says that tornado was about 50 yards wide. the picture is half a football field. the twister destroyed one home and knocked another off its foundation. several other homes lost their rooftops. the strength has not been determined but the good news is no injuries were reported. lost cell phones cost americans $30 billion a year.

our friends from pets in need are here. missy simmons is here with hope who has -- people love their dogs and love taking silly pictures of their dog. this would be a perfect dog for that kind of a person. >> absolutely. we didn't realize this when we first rescued her. she was curled up in the tightest ball, kind of like one of the garden bugs, so we carried her out like that. when we got her back to the shelter and she got more comfortable and came out of her shell, we saw she had a little bit of a deformity of her lower jaw, but she's fine.
