good morning. coming on "today on the bay" a university on high alert. a college student is killed in a dorm. police are looking for the shooters. we'll have the latest details. plus expanding the search. crews continue to scour the south bay for any sign of missing teenager sierra lamar. and a new twist in the investigation into the five people found dead in a san francisco home. why a killer may be on the loose, police say. this is sunday, march 25th, this is "today in the bay." ga good morning. looking live a the a nice start.

it could be a black and white with that instagram. >> monochromatic view around the bay at least we're not seeing too much rain right now. we had a pretty good soaking around the south bay. a little chilly, because we did get some -- that was how the night went. you probably heard the pouring rain. we're kind of catching a break right now. can you see offshore we'll have more moisture coming ashore. that's pretty chilly air aloft. as low as 3,000 to 3,500 feet, so you combine the two together, and you're starting to see showers develop during the heating of the day that may including some small hail at times. as the sun sets, the at moss sphere stabilized. i think you'll see things

calming down. we're taking mid 50s again today, so another cool day. your seven-day forecast starting to show some changes and we have some pretty surprising rain totals. we'll have the full forecast coming up. >> i can't tell you how many times i heard "i'm cold" yesterday. i guess more of it today. a southern university is on alert after a student was found shot to death. the student, a teenager, was shot last night on the mississippi state university campus. he died at the hospital. three men were last seen leaving the scene, but so far police have not announced any arrests. shortly after the shooting, the university did send out text alerts for the students. no motive is known for that attack. there's another vigil tonight for sierra lamar as the search continues. a gathering at the cross roads central .in morgan hill to pray for her safe return.

attendees are asked to bring their own candles. search and rescue crews fanned out looking for any clues. >> we've expanded our search to a 12-mile radius so this search will take us up the nor to the south end of san jose. >> sierra lamar was last seen on the morning of march 16th. investigators found her cell phone and purse earlier near her home this week, but say they have not led to any new leads. there's a special e-mail address in the hopes that anyone can help. it's on the screen and you can find it on our website, nbcbayarea.com. just search "sierra lamar." francis police say it could take several more days to figure out whether there's a killer on the loose. monte francis has an update on

what investigators are calling a complicated scene. >> i heard someone yelling in a male voice, very strong, authoritative, in clear english, get down on the ground now. >> richard, who did not want us to use his next name near the home where five people were found dead. he said he heard a boom from the house next door followed by the clear voice of someone he believes could not be a member of the slain family of chinese immigrants. >> if you expect a family to quarrel, you could expect something in their native language, right? about you it wasn't nate i have been. it was very clear. there were no accents. >> one other enabled reported hearing a man's volley, but no one heard gunshots, as experts continue to gather evidence, police have shifted their comments about what may have happened, some of whom were shot to death, at first saying all those involved in the crime were

found inside the house and now police say the body of the killer was fourchd inside the house. i cannot tell you why the experts are saying that, but they believe there's absolutely no threat to public safety. >> reporter: despite those assurances from the police, the idea that a killer could be on the loose does not sit well with neighbors here, even if the family was targeted. >> if it was a gang, there could be someone that was out there -- >> family friends who performed a chinese religious ritual outside the home friday night, along with neighbors, identified the house of a software engineer. she lived in the house with her parents and brother vincent and his wife. they also owned the house next door. richard describe her as a nice landlord. >> i can't imagine her having a confrontation with anybody. she was a very likable person. >> reporter: monte francis, "today in the bay."

a 74-year-old woman could be called to testify against joseph naso. she said that he picked her up at a bus stop in 1961 and raped her. she was a graduate student at uc berkeley at the time. she says that when police interviewed her, she said they acted as if it were her fault, even saying she had sex with him to make her boyfriend jealous. in june the office contacted her. he's accused of killing four women between 1997 and 1994. much more ahead for you. still to come, meet the iraqi woman who managed to escape the violence in her country and now trying to make a new life in the bay area with the help of a local charity. students devastated by the earthquake and tsunami in finally get to celebrate graduation day. on

looking live at oakland, where more than 9,000 runners will pound the pavement today as part of oakland's running festival. after 25 years without a marathon in the city, it returned a couple years ago, doing really well. nine years ago last week, the u.s. invaded iraq. in the time sense many iraqis worked alongside americans, trying to make their country a better place. that made mum of them a target, which is why a mother of two fled the country for santa clara, where she found a different set of challenges. >> as the final troops rolled out of the iraq, many iraqis were trying desperately to come to the united states as well, some with special reasons to fear deadly violence. >> i worked with the american forces, so i would be in danger, i mean, you know, the situation in iraq, always violent and the

militias and, you know, what's going on. so i would be a target. >> reporter: she arrived as a refugee with nothing. in a three-year sense she put her american life on hold to bring her children here. now the three are staying in a hotel room waiting for new lives to begin. >> if i want to rent an apartment, they want to be check stubs. being i'm unemployed right now, that would be, you know, this is going to be like almost impossible to find an apartment. >> al aazawi has a job lined up. >> when you're alone in a hotel room, two children, it does seem like maybe nothing is happening,

the clouds do look ominous. this morning, though, they're only going to off scattered showers today, rob says. sometimes i think it's worse if it's scattered. >> it's a little less predictable. even the ones that stall out like we saw yesterday, uniform rain, you take the umbrella, but today it may get some sun at time, which may hef destabilize the at moss fear, and some chance. let's look at the totals here so far this weekend. we got a lot last night, almost three quarters of -- we got over an inch, and as we move off to the north, we picked up close to an inch in livermore, and into the coast, the areas that saw the rain starting yesterday morning, and there you see it. almost one to two inches of a

aniright now it's chilly outside. we had just a few showers out there, chilly air, which by the way, when you get daytime heating, that will set the stage for more showers developing. we'll see the sun acting like a solar power and give us more showers. some of that may include some thunder later on. kind of a brief break, but offshore we have the next sim lining up. for the bay area, you'll see it right as we get to the afternoon. this may include some small hail, and again those mountain peaks near 3,500 feet may see some snow at times. as the sun sets, the atmosphere starts to stabilize, and that should be the trend into the morning community. monday we should catch a break, but more rain will drop in on

today. >> except for the hail. >> sorry. i'll work on that. use the eraser. a fresh start in tokyo one year after the deadly earthquake and tsunami, some university students finally got to celebrate their graduation day. last year's graduates were invited to the ceremony here. it was canceled last year because of the deadly tsunami. isn't that nice? for catholics this morning, it marks the highlight of the pope's visit to mexico. pope benedict will hope an open-air mass at christ the king monument. the vatican says the pope wanted to see and bless the statue. yesterday the pope spoke to thousands of people in juan. the wife of san francisco sheriff has left the country.

the judge 'lowed her to take the couple's children to venezuela to visit her ailing father. she is allowed to contact their son by phone or via skype. just last week he pleaded guilty to false imprisonment charges. more reports of tire slashings in the bay area, this time in pleasanton. vandals slash at least two dozen tires in a neighborhood. police say it appears to be a random act of violence. there are no suspect descriptions, but similar tire slashings were also reported earlier this month. please aren't say whether the two cases might be affected. check the label, because we have a recall this morning. clara vail farm is recalling the raw milk, and cream. code dates of march 27th or

three spaekds were seen flees in a getaway car. the university had send out text messages shortly after that shooting telling students what was going on. search and rescue crewing will be out on morgan hill this morning. the 15-year-old girl was last seen more than a week ago. never showed up at school and never came home. search and rescue crews expanded that search yesterday looking in brush and under overpasses within a 12-mile radius of the home. >> one thing that we need to remember is nobody actually saw sierra leave her home. the morgan hill community is playing for the safe return of sierra lamar at the crossroads

christian center gym in morgan hill. further north, a search continuing for a bay area man. 27-year-old joseph mchenry is a former marine. he was last seen the first week of march when he told his fame he was going on an overnight rock climbing trip. mchenry's car and backpack were found, but no one has heard from him. at least 20 marines are joining in the search, saying they live by the motto -- leave no marine behind. the group will search near sharp golf course and maury point in pacifica. the ingleside neighborhood is worried there should there could be a killer on the loose. what police thought was a murder/suicide may not be that at all. police say the body of the killer may not be among the bodies. a neighborhood said he heard a man yelling in the voice

b.a.r.t. police are hoping people will step forward to help solve a crime people refused to talk to investigators. anyone with inspection on that incident is urged to contact b.a.r.t. police. walnut creek police continue their search for a pair of purse snatchers. on friday night a woman was approached by two men, one grabbed her purse, she tried to hold on, but he eventually overpowered her. both fled in a late-model sedan. police say the woman was not injured and no weapons were used. new criticism from pge employees, a surveyor said the utility delayed repairs on leaks he discovered. he said pg & e was not keeping up with the repair schedule. in one instance, a leak was

people all over the country are honoring trayvon martin, the teenager shot and killed last month. many church services will focus on his death today. yesterday hundreds took to the rest calling for the arrest of martin's shooter george zimmerman. police say zimmerman saw martin walking in a gated community wearing a dark hoodie and thought he was suspicious. a fight broke out, and he shot and killed the teenager, who

reportedly was unarmed. last night jesse jackson spoke out about the incident. >> we know who killed trayvon. we know he was unarmed. we know they did a drug test on the murdered child, and did no drug test on the killer. there are many different tactical approaches, but i'm inclined to keep my eye on that prize. >> zimmerman says he acted inself defense, the u.s. has paid $50,000 of to the families of the people killed in an alleged shooting spree by a u.s. soldier in afghanistan. an official says the families received that money yesterday. they were told they were told the money came from president obama. the white house has not commented. investigators believe that shooting took place in two episodes. they believe that robert bales killed some of the people,

welcome back. here's a mostly clear view, actually sunol, there's fog at the bottom of the screen. you think maybe there's showers are gone. that's not the case. that's kind of setting the stage for things to turn slightly more unstable by the afternoon. let's first recap the rain. even around the south bay, this was the last spot to start to see the rain going yesterday evening and overnight. close to 0.75 of an inch, more than an inch in palo alto. now to the trivalley, from sunol you see the numbers approaching an inch of rain. then into san francisco, the coast, these locations had more than 24 hours of the steady rain, so the totals really coming up. santa cruz mountains, by the

way, cool outside right now, and i think for the afternoon, too, with most of our highs in the mid 50s. that air aloft is quite chilly. it's late march now, and we're talking about these snow levels close to 3,000 to 3,500 feet today, so some of the heavier showers, not only could they drop some small hail, but we could also see some snow again, maybe around or higher peaks, mt. diablo or maybe mt. hamilton. you can see the main rainband pushing off, but off the coast we have this next batch the clouds that will swing through. notice the energy to the south. the main event will move into san luis obispo. for the bay area, if it's chilly air aloft with the heating of the day, watch what happens here. you can see the showers bubbling up in the atmosphere. we'll see right around 3:00, 4:00 in the afternoon, if we do see thundershowers, this would be the hours we'll see them during the mid heating of the
