saying exactly what happened or why portions of that street are shut down. there are reports the scene may be the result of a hit-and-run. we do have a crew on the scene right now. we'll keep you updated as we get that information into our newsroom. part of the investigation into the disappearance of sierra lamar is headed to santa cruz county. "today in the bay" is live with the latest developments for us. good morning, bob. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura. yesterday afternoon around 4:00, someone called 911 to say they saw a teenage girl who fits sierra lamar's description hitchhiking along a road in watsonville. this person was wearing black, had more than one backpack and ended up hopping into a black pickup truck. the local sheriff's office is investigating but not been able to confirm yet whether or not that was the 15-year-old girl who has been missing from morgan hill for over a week now. yesterday, sierra lamar's parents attended prayer services

and for the first time participated in an organized search for their daughter. >> it gets harder and harder, but we're hanging in there, you know. we're hopeful. we're not giving up. >> my heart's racing, you know. i have adrenaline. i'm mentally exhausted, i'm going on adrenaline just because i want to find anything, any clue. so i can't just sit back, you know. i have to get out there and try. >> sierra was supposed to catch her school bus at this intersection down the street from her home a week ago friday morning when she disappeared. investigators have since searched several miles around her home finding her cell phone and her purse with her clothes inside. but still, no sign of sierra. reporting live here in morgan hill, bob redell, "today in the bay." a scary near abduction in the south bay to tell you about. san jose police say a man armed

with a stun gun tried to kidnap a teenage girl friday in the willow glen neighborhood. she fortunately was able to escape. the suspect was last seen driving off in a red compact car with tinted windows. he's described as a hispanic man in his 30s standing 5'7" and weighing about 200 pounds. 5:04 right now. san francisco police are investigating a deadly stabbing. officers found the victim inside a home on buchanan street in the western edition neighborhood. the man died at the scene. one arrest, but still a lot of questions this morning about the five bodies found inside of a san francisco home. what police say first appeared to be a murder/suicide is now an entirely different case. "today in the bay" is live in the engelside neighborhood where students are still shaken up. >> reporter: san francisco police officer still remains on 24 hour guard here in front of 16 house street. in fact, this entire neighborhood has yellow tape

around it, meaning this entire area remains a crime scene. someone did, however, drop off flowers in front of the victims' home some time over the weekend. the area seems peaceful now, but it still feels a little eerie after friday's mass murder here. police now say -- they have not given a motive. a family member discovered the bludgeoned bodies here on friday morning and dialed 911. at first, police said it appeared two of the victims died of gun shots. now they say they died by blunt trauma. meaning no gun may have been used. the police chief still contends the community is not in danger. and there's still a lot more investigating to take place. >> i want to continue tro reassure the public that this was specific to 16th house street. >> reporter: police won't say if they expect more arrests.

they also took in the suspect's brother in on unrelated drug charges. they say that the suspect in this case does have some gang affiliations, but they do not believe that what happened here on friday morning is gang related. we're live in san francisco, today in the bay. >> 5:06 right now. two fatal accidents being investigated in san francisco. a man was hit last night. police say he was pinned under a car and died at the scene. no word on whether charges will be filed. and a muni bus driver has been relieved of driving duties after a deadly crash. witnesses say a man stepped out into traffic between parked cars yesterday morning. he was hit by the bus and pinned underneath it. he died at the hospital. and new this morning, two more nato soldiers shot and killed in southern afghanistan. and the gunman now is dead. "today in the bay" is following the story from our newsroom joining us now with the latest overnight developments.

military officials saying this happened at the main nato base in the helmand province. a nato official confirming a man wearing an afghan army uniform opened fire on coalition troops this morning. we're now learning two british service members were killed by that gunfire. the gunman was then shot dead, but officials are not releasing details surrounding his death. army staff sergeant robert bales is being charged with murder for the death of an unborn baby. this is according to the "new york times". bales formally charged with 17 counts of murder on friday for the shooting spree he allegedly went on more than two weeks ago in afghanistan. originally, officials saying he shot and killed 16 people, well, that increased by one last week and this morning military officials explaining the 17th murder count is for an unborn baby of one of his victims. bales' wife will be on the "today" show later this morning for her first televised interview and exclusive with matt lauer. president obama is attending

an international nuclear safety summit in seoul, south korea today along with world leaders from about 60 countries. the meeting getting underway as north korea makes a bold move today. it says it has moved a long-range rocket to its launch pad. and preparation for a launch next month. now, in response, president obama urging north korea to "have the courage to pursue peace, otherwise face the consequences from the international community. laura? >> thank you very much, marla. 5:08 right now. today the supreme court begins the first of three days worth of arguments on the president's health care reform law. the landmark case will affect every person in this country for many years to come. key questions for the high court. can congress force every american to pay for health insurance? and if so, what are the government's boundaries of power? people are already lining up outside the supreme court to get a spot inside the hearing. we will have a live report from the supreme court coming up at

investigation. but there are unconfirmed reports the scene may be the result of a hit-and-run. we are still checking on this stoirg right now. and we will, of course, bring you all the details as we gather the information. it is 5:14 right now. today illegal trails will be erased. the marine municipal water district will work on the road trails today as part of an ongoing project to cut down on erosion. the water district says the trails are the result of people wandering off the beaten path or aggressively carving out new paths actually using tools. the district says it will also be redefining routes around sensitive habitats. 5:15 right now and looks like there may be more erosion happening according to christina loren as rain comes in later this week. >> but we need that rain. we are getting so much closer to summertime now and we need the rain to replenish during the summer months. now that we're starting to warm up and getting warmer systems, not looking ideal for the snow

pack, but we need that moisture for local rivers, streams, reservoirs. and we're going to stay dry every other day this week. 43 degrees in livermore, 41 in sunnyvale, 34, two degrees away from freezing in santa rosa. not much of a windchill factor yet, but the breeze will build. we're sandwiched between systems right now. and you can see here vividly, the winds are going to strengthen throughout the day today. breezy to windy from time to time. today as we head throughout the afternoon, temperatures will climb into the 60s. so comfortable conditions, 63 in san jose. if you had to keep your windows and doors shut because of that rain, you'll be able to open them up and breathe in that clean air as we head throughout this afternoon. you'll be shedding those windows and doors, 5:00 a.m. tuesday. we'll meet back here tomorrow. that's right, expect a slow commute with showers on the radar. we'll get rain steadily all the way through 2:00 p.m. up in the north bay, and that's when the heavy rain starts to push into

the south bay. we've got a little bit of moderate rainfall over the course of tuesday night into wednesday, we'll get a little bit of a break for the second half of your wednesday. and another system pushes into thursday and friday. if you're trying to make outdoor plans, it's going to be problematic. we'll time those systems out for you and let you know when you can get outdoors. mike knows what you need to know. >> that's right. we know it's going to be a lot. you gave them the note about tomorrow morning's commute. tuesday has the heaviest volume of traffic. that could be a big issue later on in the commute. this morning's commute moving smoothly. these speed sensors close to the limit. coming into san jose, 85, up towards the 101 split and also at 17, we have a smooth drive further south. we're looking over here to the lower bay shore. 101 no delays, 280 smooth drive, without any overnight construction. san mateo bridge, a similarly smooth situation here. coming off the peninsula, there you go, the headlights eastbound, westbound that's your commute direction and no problems on either side.

this week. we saw the dow rise on friday to 13,080, the nasdaq up four points to 3,067. oil prices, topping $108 a barrel last week as tensions over iran's nuclear program continue to simmer. crude is hovering around $106 today. a new survey finding gas prices rose 11 cents to $3.93 a gallon. they may have peaked for now. and a parent of american airlines will ask a bankruptcy judge this week to throw out the labor contract so it can negotiate new terms. amr's trying to cut more than $1 billion in costs that they say is crucial to the survival. it comes after american and unions fail to reach a deal during weeks of talks. american filed for chapter 11 in november. back over to you. >> thanks so much, jackie. >> how is this for a cool wedding gift? a british couple getting a monumental surprise as the term wedding crashers takes on a regal and royal flavor.

blanks on the weather. it is 5:23. late last night, yahoo appointed three new directors to the board. it pits the company against one of the biggest investors. the investment company owns about 6% of yahoo shares. the move will force him to try to gain more control of the company. yahoo is reportedly near a major reorganization which could lead to thousands of layoffs. this morning, two senators calling for a federal investigation into exactly how much access employers can have to your facebook profile. chuck schumer of new york and richard blumenthal say they're troubled by a recent report that employers are asking their job applicants for facebook passwords. they want the commission to determine if the practice is legal under federal law. >> we believe employers have no right to ask their job applicants for many things. for their house keys, for their

diaries, why should they be able to ask them to do the electronic version of the same thing? >> on friday, facebook says it may take legal action to try to prevent employers for asking for passwords. >> pinterests is causing concern about what is legal and what is not. on pinterest, people post pictures of whatever you find to be interesting. there could be a legal problem if the picture posting is one they did not take. someone could put up a picture of the best pizza ever, let's say, but if the picture comes off the restaurant's website, could they be sued for copyright infringement. >> it's very unclear, it's very gray, it's a new technology, it's a brand new social media site right now and the lawyers tend to say -- the ones i've talked to tend to say probably not. >> experts say unless people are trying to profit from pictures posted, most copyright owners won't bother with legalities. >> interesting questions,

in a mysterious mass killing in san francisco. at first they thought it was a murder/suicide, but now they have a suspect in custody. "today in the bay" is live outside the home this morning with the latest details. good morning. >> good morning, laura. this area remains a crime scene. there is yellow tape around several homes that are adjacent to 16 house street. and a police officer from san francisco stands guard 24 hours a day right now. so things are pretty unstable right now here at the scene. last night, police did announce they arrested a man they say is responsible for the murders. he's ty luke out of san francisco. he's a known gang member with past criminal history, but don't believe the murders were gang-related. investigators say the victims died of blunt trauma and not gun shots as initially theorized. police have not revealed the motives either and will not say if they are looking for more suspects at this time. but they will say the home and family were targeted so the

community at large is not in danger. >> the investigation continues, it is ongoing. i want to continue to reassure the public that this incident was specific to 16 house street. >> reporter: the arrest is a turn around from the initial theorys here at the scene on friday. the chief told us here at the scene that there were no suspects that all of the people involved in the murders were all dead inside the home. then came these arrests. police also arrested the suspect's brother on unrelated drug charges. we are live in san francisco. "today in the bay." a rave party with a deadly history is returning to the bay area, pop 2012 will be held at oakland's oracle arena this saturday. it features the pounding music always associated with a rave. lawmakers also say it tracks

drug users. that same event two years ago left two people dead and 70 people under arrest. the lawmakers say they want these types of events banned. a man is under arrest for drunk driving in the east bay. but what is unusual is what he did to his friend. they say he was drinking outside the restaurant yesterday afternoon at the san leandro marina. witnesses say his friend was hanging out the passenger's side window and he turned sharply, tossing his friend on to the pavement. he was arrested last night when he showed up at the hospital to check on his p friend's condition. reenforcements have arrived for sierra lamar search. two families have offered their support. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in morgan hill with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, john. sierra lamar's mom here in morgan hill tells us it is certainly getting harder knowing it's been over a week since her 15-year-old daughter

disappeared. but she's not giving up. yesterday, she along with sierra's father participated in their first organized search for their daughter. the lamars are finding lots of support not only from the community of morgan hill, but as you are alluding to, people who know firsthand what it's like to have a loved one go missing. mark class has offered his help with his foundation and michael lei whose sister michelle was murdered last year was here to offer his support to the family. >> no one expects the situation to happen, but it just does. that's why people who have been through it, you just feel so much for them. you just can't -- if you find anything, it just tears you up. >> this morning on the "today" show, the last known photo of sierra lamar, investigators believe the 15-year-old took that picture of herself before leaving her home a week ago

friday morning. in it she's wearing what investigators believe might be the same shirt found in her purse abandoned a couple of miles away from her home. now several miles from here, deputies in watsonville are looking into a reported sierra sighting. someone reported seeing a teenaged hitchhiker yesterday afternoon. possibly fitting her description. but so far, nothing has come of that. reporting live here in morgan hill, "today in the bay." it's 5:35 right now. b.a.r.t. is searching for anyone who has witnessed a brutal attack. a man was found on march 9th. he was unconscious and bleeding from his head. investigators are eager to find witnesses who can explain what happened. there are new allegations this morning of double-dipping by some san jose police officers. the audit of the police department's outside pay job program found some officers double billed getting paid by the city and secondary employers

penalty. the obama administration, of course, is fighting back. well, the states are arguing it's unconstitutional, the obama administration is standing its ground. >> we look forward to the supreme court later this june holding the acts unconstitutional. >> by the end of the decade we're going to be glad the republicans call this obama care. >> reporter: so this is a case that is going to be taking out -- going to be playing out over an extraordinary three days of argument. today is the first, tomorrow, and then finally, everything will wrap up on wednesday. the high court expected to make a decision. likely a landmark decision in june. back to you. >> okay, brian, thank you very much. san diego police are investigating the brutal beating death of an iraqi american woman as a possible hate crime. 32-year-old alawati was taken off of life support over the weekend. she was found unconscious in her home on wednesday. next to her was a handwritten

note warning her to go back to her country and calling her a terrorist. san diego police say the family found a similar note earlier this month but did not report it to authorities. for the very first time, we're hearing from the wife of the u.s. soldier accused of k l killing 17 afghan civilians. this is her very first tv interview since her husband was charged with murder for the march 11th massacre. karilyn bales says she cannot believe her husband would do such a thing. >> you said to me a while ago when i asked what kind of dad he was. you said he was so involved with his children. he loves children. >> he loves children. he's like a big kid himself. >> he is accused of killing nine children. innocent children. >> it's unbelievable to me. i have no idea what happened, but he would not -- he loves children, and he would not do that.

>> the entire story is hard to believe. and you can see the rest of the interview coming up on "today" starting at 7:00. well, today marks one month since 17-year-old trayvon martin was gunned down by a neighborhood watchman in a neighborhood in sanford, florida. thousands are expected to gather at a demonstration to remember his life as city leaders meet with the family and civil rights leader at the civics center. the shooter, george zimmerman has not been charged with any crime. martin was wearing a hoodie and carrying an iced tea with a bag of skittles when he was shot and killed walking home. some argue that zimmerman tracked the boy down, but zimmerman's attorneys say he shot the boy in self-defense. >> he suffered a broken nose, an injury, a gash to the back of his head. >> over the weekend, sunday's typical attire was replaced with hoodies. >> we stand in solidarity with the family of trayvon martin. >> the department of justice

right now investigating the case and could charge zimmerman with a hate crime. well, this morning, president obama in seoul, south korea to reinforce his commitment to stopping the spread of nuclear weapons, president obama taking part in a nuclear security summit. north korea has dominated tension in the region since announcing earlier this month it would send a satellite into space aboard a long-range rocket. south korea now warning it may shoot that rocket down. speaking to a crowd of students, the president urging north korea to stop its launch plans immediately. >> there will be no rewards for provocations. those days are over. today we say pyongyang have the courage to pursue peace and give a better life to the people of north korea. >> if north korea decides to launch that satellite, president obama says it could jeopardize a u.s. plan to ship food and aid to the country. 5:45 right now. the top gop candidates will be

to be your day. are you busy this morning? what's going on? >> i'm busy checking all the roadways. but i'm searching for something significant. good news is i'm not finding a lot, and that means your drive through the south bay is moving very smoothly. construction held off overnight, so sunday into monday, we don't see a lot of activity. and the roadways just warming up and the commute's a little bit lighter. good stuff through the south bay. but i want to point out this. we've been telling you about the fatal accident. right at wild wood. now, wild wood is the connector between lawrence expressway and over toward mission college. that's the connector everybody uses. that is still open. but just off of there is closed for a block because of that deadly accident. we're following for details, but we do know it is close. one city block there. again, not affecting your drive, though, to mission college. all right, here, 101 is smooth as well as 280 through the peninsula, highway 84. the dumbarton bridge shows no

delays. both of those crossing the bay, nice, easy drive. a smooth approach coming out of hayward and toward 92. and the y holding up with speeds close to the limit here. livermore, we've started the slowdown now, 15-minute drive slowing through the heart of livermore, but clearing, not much of an issue there. we do have, still, the issue of getting toward the maze. to volume of traffic starting to build. highway 24, shows a little bit of slowing into the 50s, but no big drum as you head toward the bay bridge toll plaza. and a live look for the north bay, as well, where the volume starts to build here. southbound, your commute through the direction, no major slowing through highway 37 down through san francisco and the golden gate bridge. back to you. and not long after adjusting our clock for daylight savings time out in new york, it's now tebow time. that's right, today the jets making it official, announcing tim tebow as their backup quarterback. going to do that for the upcoming season. tebow traded to the jets after

"today in the bay" the latest in overnight and developments. >> not a whole lot of information being released just yet, but we can tell you a nato official says two british service members were shot and killed on the main nato base in the helmand province in southern afghanistan. military officials saying a man wearing an afghan army uniform opened fire on international troops this morning. that gunman was then shot and killed -- shot and killed. now to the coast of italy where rescue divers are removing those five bodies that were found last week in the capsized costa concordia. so far, 2 of the 5 have been retrieved today.
