good morning. i'm bob redell. we'll take you live to morgan hill where just a couple hours out from what's supposed to be a large volunteer effort to find the missing 15-year-old girl sierra lamar. that story coming up. two very violent nights in san francisco. two people stabbed in an occupy encampment. i'm christie smith. coming up, i'll tell you what they're trying to do to stay safe. the supreme court is expected to get to the center of the debate over health care reform today. details coming up. and we give you a live look outside at the golden gate bridge, traffic flowing smoothly, but be aware, the roads will be wet, the rain is setting in on this tuesday, march 27th, "today in the bay."

good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. 6:00 right now, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm john kelly. and i call this one of those mary poppins days. >> that's right. you saw christie smith out there earlier. it's no kro joke this morning, that means you could get caught by slick conditions over our open water bridges. take it easy out there this morning and you can see, yeah, the action is ramping up, especially in the north bay where we have steady rain all along the marin county coastline. we are expecting that steady rain to move south as we head throughout the day today and intensify. so we'll let you know what that means for your city, how much we're expecting and when you get get outdoors. we've got the 70s on that seven day. stay tuned for that. 6:01. when it rains, it slows. >> and tuesday, let's look outside and see what we have right now for 880 past the coliseum. the traffic volume building, but the camera shaking is what we're concerned with.

gusty winds from time to time around the east bay hills, east bay here and we have the bay bridge with a wind advisory. the volume picks up and slick roads will be a factor, as well. highway 4 shows the slowing speeds down around 15 miles per hour, holding consistently over the last 15 minutes, but that will start to move over toward bay point and bleed over toward the maze over the next half an hour. we'll track that as this traffic tuesday rainy and windy tuesday build. >> yeah, no kidding. thank you very much. well, volunteers will gather in just a few hours to take over the search for sierra lamar. it's being organized by a man painfully familiar with a heartbreak of a missing child. "today in the bay" live where volunteer searchers will gather at 8:00 a.m. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. the foundation is coordinating the search effort and the family of sierra lamar is asking you if you have the time today to come here in a couple hours and

register and spend two to three hours to search a specific area under the guidance of law enforcement. it has now been 11 days since their 15-year-old daughter sierra disappeared. the sheriff's office has since recovered her cell phone and a purse containing her clothes, but there's no indication still of where she might be. investigators have also received more than 350 tips and sightings, nothing credible so far. sierra's father is asking if you know anything, even if it seems insignificant, call it in. >> anything at this point. you know, anything like that is worth it now because we don't have anything else. >> the foundation, which again, as i mentioned is coordinating this effort was founded by mark klaas whose own daughter polly was abducted and murdered in 1993. so here are the specifics. the burnett elementary at 85

tillton road here in morgan hill. the search is from 8:00 to 1:00. you want to be here at 8:00. you must be 18 years of age or older, you will need a photo i.d. and dress appropriately. long pants, sturdy shoes, that sort of thing. they plan on doing this search effort starting today through at least sunday. reporting live here in morgan hill, bob redell, "today in the bay." the man accused of killing five people inside a san francisco home should have been deported six years ago. immigration authorities say they tried to deport him to his native vietnam in 2006, but his native country wouldn't accept him. this all happened while he was on probation for robbing a san jose restaurant. police have still not released a motive for the killings in san francisco's engel side neighborhood, but investigators say he knew the victims. two stabbings in two days. both at san francisco's occupy encampment right in front of the federal reserve bank. smith is live with a report coming straight from one of the victims. kind of a scary past couple of days. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, john. very dangerous situation out here. two people stabbed in two nights. i spoke with one man who was stabbed last night. he went to the hospital and he's back here. he says he's not leaving. i also spoke with another man, one of the occupiers here and he says that since this has happened, they're basically staying up around the clock to try and stay safe. now this latest stabbing happened last night around midnight after an argument started is what they're telling me between a 27-year-old man who says he was just defending this small camp here about half dozen people in front of the federal reserve on market street from a guy who came up, he says, to try and make trouble. he said they fell down some stairs in a struggle he ended up being stabbed. this is similar to what happened sunday night with another occupier who is still in the hospital from his bounwounds. i spoke with an occupier who

says his name is mike and he says no someone is always up. >> all we can do is assign people to stay up at night and maintain everyone has a job to do in security. and everyone has a job to do in society to keep an eye on one another and take care of us. >> reporter: now 27-year-old jim showed us his wounds, his stab wounds to his arm and his neck. he says he got stitches at s.f. general and came back here. he says he believes there are two different suspects involved that is not the same guy coming back. and he says they are definitely not occupiers. both of them got away. so far, no arrests. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." the man charged in a three-way gun battle in the east bay will learn if he will go to trial. a preliminary hearing continues for 46-year-old byron williams of groveland. he's charged with attempted murder for a 2010 shootout with a highway patrol on interstate

580. no officers were hurt. the chp says at the time of his arrest, williams had planned to travel to san francisco where he was going to attempt to kill leaders of the aclu and the tides foundation. it is 6:06 right now. the former giants employee who admitted to embezzling more than $2 million from the team is now headed to federal prison. 42-year-old robin connor admitted to transferring money from the team to her personal accounts. o'connor has paid $960,000 to the giants, paid the money back to them. she's been ordered to pay $1.4 million more. san mateo county is wrestling with the prospect of major budget cuts. the county is facing a shortfall in next year's budget if it is not fixed, the county's deficit could balloon to $50 million by 2017. county managers says the plan to build a new jail is straining resources. he says the county is banking on

three tax measures on the june ballot and contract concessions from county workers. the push continues today for oakland to sever ties with those big banks. council members, rebecca kaplan and jane bruner will join homeowners and others at a community finance meeting set at noon. they want to move money out of the city out of the large institutions and into community banks and credit unions. the push is in response to the involvement of some of those banks in the mortgage crisis. 6:08 right now. plans to cancel spring admissions from california state universities will hit community college students hard. csu says budget troubles will force it to admit only a few hundred students next spring. it is designed to ease crowding in classes. students who are eligible at fall 2013 admission will be wait listed until they decide ballot initiatives to fund education.

today the supreme court hearing arguments on whether the government can force you to buy hrk insurance. this is the second of three days of arguments on president obama's health care reform bill. 26 states and a business group will argue the law that allows government to regulate business does not apply. >> and if the federal government can force people to buy health insurance, and can force the states to set up health care exchanges, there are no limits what they can force individuals to do. >> supporters of the law argue it is the only way to make sure everybody is covered. >> all right. everybody better get covered, at least this morning with a good umbrella. rain's hitting the bay area. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> looks like it's going to hit the bay area all the way from your morning drive to your evening commute home. and that means you want to give yourself plenty of extra time and travel cautiously. the bulk of the moisture still to the north of the bay area and the northern most portion of the state that's all going to slide south throughout this afternoon. and i believe the front will

maintain a good deal of organization. we are expecting inches of rain in some cities across the bay area. especially the higher elevations. you can see right now, getting some pretty good rainfall in marin county all the way from the beach through fairfax and mill valley, pretty good shower activity. take it easy out there as you get out that front door this morning and make your way to work, likely a slow drive for you, in addition to the rain. we're going to talk about gusty winds. not just right now, but throughout the day. let's show you what we're expecting. 6:00 a.m. the blue, the yellow, the green, it's that pink, orange, and red indicating the very, very gusty winds we'll develop throughout the evening hours, just in time for the evening commute home. we're talking about heavy rain later today and gusty winds. we'll time it out for you and let you know what's to come for the rest of the workweek, as well. 70, yeah, you've got that in my next report. first let's talk to mike and see how we're doing so far. >> if you saw that little bit of christina's map, the red and

yellow not because of the heat, that's the wind we're looking at. over to my map's green chicklets. here's the live shot and it trembles a bit, shakes at times as the winds hit us. the bridge itself, you'll get caught with those gusts mid span likely, the volume builds up here. back to the map, the lower deck does show a little bit of slowdown coming out of the city. and the upper deck approaching the fremont street exit. we should see the metering lights turned on shortly, but not just yet. they may be turned on earlier because of that wind advisory. san mateo bridge highway 92, parallel bridge getting the same wind but not quite as severe. smooth drive off of 880. moving steadily as well as 580 there. 580 out of the altamont pass, speeds are dipping, a 20-minute drive now. 6:11 right now. coming up on "today in the bay,"

welcome back, everyone, no, it is not the winning ticket of the megamillions, but a battle in the south bay over very lucky numbers. "today in the bay" joins us live from mountain view with an update on the controversy. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. here and liquor and tobacco is where you see that sign, millionaire made here, are you next? while the woman from mountain view who bought that ticket in january apparently was next. she says a ticket she bought here friday was also a big winner.

emily leach writing to us this weekend telling us that ticket hit a $260,000 prize. one of seven tickets according to the lotto purchased in the state that hit 5 out of 6 numbers. now leach says she had given that ticket to a man who recognized her in the store from her lotto fame saying, "i paid for his beers, gave him $100, and one of the quick pick tickets i had bought for the mega millions jackpot. i wished him luck and he gave me a hug." that was in an e-mail sunday night, but within 24 hours, she's quoted in the "san jose mercury news" changing her tune. "that's my ticket. he knows it's my ticket. you need to give me my ticket back." the clerk says the man returned on saturday and had the winning ticket, but so far has not claimed the money, no one has. the lotto commission is likely to take a look at the surveillance video and see if she's the one buying the ticket. a spokesman telling the mark

good looks, ladies and gentlemen, it it will get you something. get your umbrella as you get out that front door. we've got a lot of rain coming downright now and more on the way throughout the afternoon. your radar lit up like a christmas tree north of our area. at this point, we're getting the lighter showers, the prefrontal precipitation and we're still on the warm side of the front. that's why it's so mild out there this morning. temperatures are in the 50s. you may have had to turn your heater off because it is so mild out there. we'll get a cold blast later on today and that'll keep your temperatures on the cool side only rounding out in the low 60s in the warmest cities across the bay. that front will continue to slide to the south and these showers will intensify throughout your afternoon hours. in fact, we're going to go ahead and time those out for you. but if you are waking up with us right now, make sure you give yourself plenty of time along 101. 53 in san jose, 52 in san mateo. we'll see the showers develop and intensify as we head throughout the first part of the

day by 4:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., starting to get a little bit of a breakup in the north bay. you can stop the clock on your future cast. we've government heavy rain on the way to parts of the bay area. as we progress, stop that future cast at 5:00 p.m. you can see we're getting a little bit more moderate rain, heavy downpours down in the south bay. watch out for that on your way home from work. and in addition, at 5:00 p.m., we'll have gusty winds across the bay area. we are watching for downed trees. you want to take it easy over 17. we stop the clock at 10:00 a.m. wednesday. showers will lighten up. we'll see a showery pattern for the second half of wednesday and a few showers moving onshore for thursday. but overall, a warm-up thursday into friday. major temperature swings between friday and sunday. going from 70 to 59 degrees with rain over the course of the weekend. if you're trying to make those outdoor plans, get spring cleaning taken care of, sunday's your day to do so. 56, sun and clouds monday of next week when we meet back here. let's check your drive. mike's watching that like a

hawk. >> we are. that rain, we're on the front side of the storm and that rain coming in is going to affect folks later on today, actually later on in this morning's commute. so far, one incident, this is in the south bay at northbound 101 around 13th and sounds like it should move out of lanes, no major slowing approaching the scene. over here 280 at 880. we do have a camera, we're focusing on 280. see the volume of traffic coming through the area. and as you can see, these headlights coming up past us over toward the 880 17 interchange. and the roadway itself dry throughout this area. again, dramatic change coming in the next few hours. let's look back to the maps and see how things are shaping up in other spots for your bay commute. peninsula, 101 through san mateo, an easy drive. no problems over the bridge. but the high-rise, you might get those gusts or two passing the san mateo bridge. there's a wind advisory for the span, slowing now, and in the last couple of minutes, we had those metering lights turned on.

we should see slowing through the curve. send it back to you. >> thank you, mike. it's 5:19 right now. the parents of gunned down florida teen trayvon martin will be on capitol hill today. they'll take part in a congressional forum on racial profiling and hate crimes. before the hearing, martin's parents are expected to join a march to the white house to demand a federal investigation into the case. in the meantime, new claims cast martin as the aggressor. the neighborhood watch captain who shot and killed martin told police martin punched him and smashed his head on the ground. martin's father says he wants justice. >> we're not asking for an eye for an eye, we're asking for justice. arrest needs to be made for george michael zimmerman. >> martin was suspended from school for having a baggy with marijuana residue in his backpack. a strong earthquake hitting northern japan overnight. this one a 6.4 preliminary

magnitude. there are no reports of any damage and no tsunami warning was held there. the first wave of debris from last march's tsunami hitting parts of western canada. an empty fishing boat was spotted out drifting near islands of british columbia. the debris field moving ahead of schedule after it was recently tracked north of the hawaiian islands. but scientists a the this point not sure how much of it will actually make landfall. more than 1 million tons of trash have traveled all the way from japan after last march's tsunami. >> kind of amazing of the travel path. >> it's wild. 6:21 right now. coming up, a key vote that could scale down how the america's cup impacts. nd find out who he's meeting with to talk about problems.

well, no, it's not exactly what race organizers wanted, but a key vote expected today on the americas cup. a final vote on a scaled back version of the event. original plans to build the team bases on piers 30 and 32 were scrapped when the negotiations broke down. instead, teams will be housed on pier 80, that's in the neighborhood there. exhibition races start in august and the main competition will be held next year. the u.s. men's soccer team will not be playing in the

treasure island. it doesn't look like the traffic's stacked up on the lower deck. you can see the headlights moving to your screen. it does sound like one lane is blocked somewhere along that span. the upper deck moves smoothly. you might find slowing because of the metering lights at the toll plaza. and you can see again the camera shaking. 680, going to get caught with gusts, as well. >> hold on tight. >> yes, definitely. >> thank you, mike. new this morning, volunteers will start gathering in a little over an hour for right now to help out in that search for a young sierra lamar. bob redell live in morgan hill where the community's coming together right now to find the missing teenager. bob, good morning. >> good morning to you, john, in just about an hour and a half the foundation will open up what they're referring to as the find sierra center here at burnett elementary in morgan hill. this is where organizers will coordinate volunteer efforts to find sierra lamar, the 15-year-old girl that has been missing for 11 days now. what they're going to be doing

today will be on top of what law enforcement has been doing, as well. the santa clara county sheriff's office tells us they have more than 40 investigators assigned to this case, poring over more than 350 tips. nothing has panned out so far. the sheriff's office has also coordinated a search of the 12-mile area surrounding the lamar home. they found her cell phone and purse with clothes inside, but no sierra. law enforcement will be divided into groups of 12 or so to canvas specific areas. >> each one of the search assignments typically lasts between two and three hours, they'll fan out and begin doing a line search. >> if you want to help out with the search, they're going to be conducting this from 8:00 to 1:00 every day at least through sunday. so you want to be here at 8:00 at burnett elementary school, which is at 85 tilton here in

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live. >> reporter: he describes it as out of the blue. right now, one occupier is up 24 hours a day after these attacks. two people stabbed in two nights here at the occupy sf encampment. i spoke to one man who was stabbed last night. and he says he didn't even know the man who stabbed him. he's okay right now after getting stitches at sf general after this attack at midnight. they tell me that a man came to their small encampment of about a dozen people that set up here at the federal reserve bank on market street. they say he was talking about 9/11 conspiracies and starting to cause trouble. 27-year-old jim, that's what he goes by, says he was trying to defend the camp, next thing he knew, he'd been stabbed. >> well, i'm fine now, hurt my arm and stabbed me, but just got

in a scuffle with somebody. i don't even know the guy, he wasn't from occupy, i don't know. i had never seen him before. i don't know why he did it really. >> this morning, he showed us the wounds to his neck and his arm, now, this is all similar to another attack sunday night an occupier stabbed in the chest. he's still in the hospital is what they're telling me out here this morning. they also say they think these are two different attackers responsible. neither one, they say is part of the encampment that has been out here for at least a month. and they're also telling me they plan to stay put. so far no arrests. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." it'll be an extremely painful day for surviving members of a gilroy family after a tragic murder/suicide. funeral services being held tomorrow for martha, abel, and

his 11-year-old sister. abel was a 27-year-old iraqi war vet who family members say showed signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. tomorrow the funeral services will be open to the public. 6:36 right now, the battle over gay rights could soon be on the legal fast-track. the obama administration is asking a federal court to speed up the review of a case. it involves the legality of the defense of marriage act which denies federal benefits to gay couples. the obama administration wants to convene an 11-judge panel. it would allow them to set stricter standards for laws which deny equal treatment. this is also the last step before a supreme court review. turning to sports now on the basketball court. the stanford women were fighting for a spot in the final four last night and get the job done. the lady cardinals taking on duke in the elite eight. call this one all cardinals.

stanford steps up taking it 81-69, they are heading back to the final four for the fifth consecutive year. >> nice. go cardinals. all right. get that umbrella out. want to check in with christina loren with a look at our forecast. all day rain? >> all day rain, guys. looks like today a washout. and in addition to the rain, we've got gusty winds to deal with. those winds will strengthen through the second half of your day, but right now, you can see the bulk of the moisture is concentrated in the north bay. this is a developing system. it's going to take its time getting to san jose. do not fear, though, we will get that rain by about noon. starting to get that moderate rain inland. talking about maybe 55 degrees at noon and rounding out the day. at about 59 degrees. it will not be all that warm. you'll need the jacket, you'll need that umbrella all day long. as we head throughout the afternoon, take a look at what we're expecting. pretty significant up in santa

rosa, over 1 1/2 inches expected there, san jose, we're expecting maybe a little bit more. that could mean we could see localized flooding, downed trees, and mud slides over 17. we'll talk about when we get a break from the rain and hit 70 degrees in my seven-day forecast. despite the break from the ra rain right now, we are looking at an accident. no break from that. we have first a five-car accident reported north of tulye road. despite that, we have just minor injuries reported here. but injuries nonetheless. so an ambulance has to arrive on scene. and very nearby it sounds like a second accident may be involving another three vehicles. that might be a total of eight vehicles involved in the span between tully road as you're heading up toward 680. and we already see the slowing there. it's going to build past capital expressway in the next few. expect highway 87 to get slowing, as well. that will be the ripple effect. now from the south bay to the

north bay, let's get a look at the effects of the weather through san rafael. the water kicking in on the roadway, kicking up on to the windshields and that's going to affect your visibility and your traction as well as the wind watch it there and back to the maps, a slowdown approaching the merger coming over the san rafael side to the side of the bridge. 6:39 right now. mountain view woman says she did not mean to give away a mega millions ticket worth $360,000, and now she wants it back. find out how she claimed to have lost it in the first place. coming up. but first, we go live to washington where the supreme court will hear more arguments on. hea we'll havehat next.wne ♪

it is day two of the supreme court's arguments on whether the new health care law is legal. today in the bay tracie potts joins us from outside the court where justice is grappling with the issue of whether americans can be forced to buy insurance. good morning, tracie. >> reporter: good morning, and before i tell you about that central issue that's going to happen inside today, surely you are hearing the crowds out here, hundreds of people now who have gathered both for and against this health law. it is yet again on day two an emotional gathering of protesters outside the court. inside today, the justices will hear the key argument in this case. can the federal government require almost everyone in this country to buy health insurance and penalize them if they don't? that penalty was the issue, the

topic of discussion yesterday. whether it's a tax and whether it can actually be decided before that tax is in place in 2014. today, they will hear arguments both for and against whether the individual mandate to purchase insurance is constitutional. the government says yes, opponents say congress overreached the law, the commerce clause and cannot do that. we will hear from the national federation of independent business. they're a plaintiff in this case. and 26 states who oppose this health law. as you can hear, it's a huge gathering here outside the court, we'll be following it today and bringing you more information as we hear those oral arguments get underway soon. laura? >> thank you very much, tracie potts, for the update. 6:43 right now. coming up, 15 minutes of uninterrupted news, including a live report on this morning's search for missing teenager sierra lamar. we'll have that next. do some. show it some love.

a wet one across the bay area today. >> yeah, it is, we're tracking really significant showers as of right now. they just developed, take it right to the radar. you can see the clouds thickening up over the city by the bay. transamerica pier, we have light showers in this area, but moderate rain on the way to the city of san francisco. as we head through the next hour or so. so let's go ahead and time it out for you. you can see the showers streaming onshore with cells developing in the pacific. developing and on their way to the peninsula. it all works out like this. 40 minutes away from the sunset district, moderate rainfall there, that next line will hit half moon bay in about 55 minutes away from hitting san mateo.

we head through thursday in some cities. 66 by the bay, and friday, 70. oh, it's going to be comfortable even right here in san jose. another round of rain develops saturday into sunday. we'll get clearing, temperatures will cool off, we're right back to 66 degrees come monday when we kick off next week. let's talk to mike about the drive. >> that's something to look forward to. right now, we have to look at this. this accident still brewing on northbound 101 at tully road. good news, went from two accidents to one accident scene. a total of five cars reported on the northbound side as you're approaching tully road two of those cars reported as totaled meaning they can't even drive them away from the scene, they have to get a flat bed tow truck. and with all that report, well, just minor injuries. that's good news, but we're following up with the chp to make sure that is the case. just minor, we want to watch out for the welfare of our drivers, as well. and i told you with all of this, you're going to see slowing for 87 and we have seen this, it took ten minutes for that to

participating, in what would basically be the all-volunteer search for 15-year-old sierra lamar. you want to come here in a little bit over an hour at 85 tilton in morgan hill. brad guinness is with the klaas kids foundation and that's coordinating this search effort. so when people come here, what can they expect this morning? >> when they first come in, we're going to go through a registration process, and then a training process, the different type of search patterns we're going to be using, what they do if they find something in the field and how to work together as a team. >> do you have specific areas you're going to be searching? >> we have identified some areas and we are waiting for our coordination with our liaison with law enforcement to look at some additional search areas. >> so these areas aren't necessarily in places they think they found evidence, you said trying to rule them out? >> yeah, these are areas where we're trying to eliminate more of the property out here, even in the elimination of search areas that in itself is aid in

player. samantha died eight days after being rushed to the hospital. she was considered one of the country's top high school prospects for volleyball. she also played on three junior olympic teams. the exact cause of death at this point has not been determined. 6:52. still a lot of questions this morning about a deadly hit-and-run in sunnyvale. police say 29-year-old san jose woman was hit by a light-colored suv on sunday night. and investigators are not sure if the woman was a passenger inside the suv or how she ended up in the roadway. she was rushed to valley medical center where she died. her name is not been released. and police are still looking for the suv. and just when you thought it was safe to leave your bottles and other recyclables out on your curb for collection, you've got to think again. san francisco examiner reporting hundreds of people drive around san francisco stealing the recyclables to sell them at scrap yards.

the company hired by the city to pick up that garbage says the theft means the loss of up to $5 million each and every year. of course, it is illegal in san francisco for anybody to take, remove, or move recycling bins or items inside. an alleged act of kindness is quickly turning into controversy over a winning lottery ticket. "today in the bay" joins us live for an update on a big lotto battle. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: well, laura, good morning, the odds of winning a major lottery prize, pretty slim. imagine hitting good numbers twice with tickets from the same store within a couple of months. that's apparently what happened here at the liquor and tobacco. you see the sign, millionaire made here. emily leach won that $1 million prize back in january. she wrote us sunday night telling us ton friday she bought another winning ticket hitting five of six numbers in the megamillions, that's $260,000 prize. leach says she gave that ticket to a man who recognized her from

her lotto fame saying "i paid for his beers, gave him $100, and one of the quick pick tickets i bought for the mega millions jackpot. i wished him luck and he gave me a hug." she's quoted in the mercury news as saying, that's my ticket, he knowst it's my ticket, you need to give it back. a clerk tells us the man returned saturday and said he had the winning ticket but so far has not claimed that money. the lotto commission is expected to look into this. take a look at the surveillance video shot in this store and see if she bought the ticket as a starting point in this investigation. live in mountain view, "today in the bay." the future of a south bay animal shelter is in limbo this morning. palo alto considering a plan to shut down the center. the center serves mountain view, palo alto, los altos and los altos hills. it was funded by money by all

four cities, but mountain view has decided to leave that partnership and palo alto says it cannot afford to make up the difference. 6:54, the north bay is honoring the life of one of the leaders. a ceremony will take place dedicating an exhibit space at the marin civic center in memory of supervisor. he died a year ago today after suffering a heart attack while skiing. the first exhibit in the space honors frank lloyd wright and his influence in marin. bmw calling in more than 1,000 of its five and six series vehicles. the recall involving model year 2003 to 2010. now the automaker says in rare cases, a battery cable covering the trunk was incorrectly installed. the defect could prevent the car from starting. in extreme cases, the defect could lead to a fire. bmw says at this point it's unaware of any accidents or injuries surrounding the effect.
